  • Hilary Doyle and I did this story one cool fall evening as part of Hilary's 'Good Idea' segment. Good fun, running around at night in Kesington going through dumpsters then going to their place to make dinner.
Co-Produced and shot by Ben Aylsworth with help from Jimmy Johnny with his light on a stick magic.

Dude I used to dumpster dive all the time at Dollar General. They threw out so much good shit. Me, my friend Kurt, and his family ate like kings for months

    (1) Its frustrating how some people insist on being negative about this and can't see past their own prejudice. Freegan in NOT about being a freeloader etc.Its a counter-reaction to a long period of consumerism and how resources are abused.

@usaf317 it's not disgusting, you can dumpster only packed things, you can check the expiry date (althoug most food can still be eaten after it passed) and you can trust your own senses, telling you what's still edible and what's not

Food markets waste so much food, why can't they just give to the homeless ?

The homeless have sued companies fkr getting sick on their donated food. So now it became law in most places or at the least policy so the company is not liable.

    (2) No the world is not saved by scavenging a few tomatoes but it highlights the issue that a LOT of food is thrown away for no reason and that in a world where so many are starving. Is the food gross? Its all a matter of geography. A few hours ago that food was on a shelve in a store. Now it's moved a few feet out of the store and is no longer useable?

I prefer the idea of "sharing" to eliminate waste. Give what you don't need. Waste management: before food goes bad, make a soup out of it or a casserole. But protect your health. Don't eat out of a garbage can where they are pouring rat poison. Rats and mice themselves leave a trail of urine and fecal matter everywhere they go because they can't hold their bowels. Flies and roaches carry horrible viruses and diseases, some of which are heat resistant. Just something to consider.

Actually I understand about not wasting food but why don't we just have restaurants and grocery stores give food to homeless shelters an organizations that serve the homeless. Then it doesn't have to end up in the garbage.

Depending on where you live, that can come with strict laws against it. There are ways around it, but in most cases the law is against you when it comes to reducing food waste through donations.

Well now I know who's beating me to all that furniture on craigslist.
Personally I'd prefer to start a garden or hunt sewer rat, but I respect this much more than people leaching off of the government(people that don't NEED it of course)

@usaf317 You just feel bad because you can't handle someone getting stuff free when you don't. It's kinda greedy not to mention selfish.
More people get foodpoisoning from restaurants than from eating like this.

You think that ancient greeks were eating from the garbage?

I love the idea of not wasting food and things.. but one question I have from watching several videos like this ... Why do all these people seriously need a shave and have rags for clothes ? Is it written somewhere that you have to look like a hippie to enjoy that lifestyle ? Is there a book of rules they all go by ?

this is cool but I am so grossed out picking food from dumbster... i don't think I would that even if I didn't have food. How about food poisoning? this is not sanitary and should never be fed to kids. EW

    • @TigerTT
      @TigerTT 8 ปีที่แล้ว

Its gross to think about where the food came from, however food poisoning doesn't happen if the food is cooked at 500 degrees from what I remember because then all the bacteria is killed.

What about the rodents and other creatures crawling about? I respect you guys, but still think it's gross.
