the grocery store i work at would rather throw away hundreds of dollars worth of food everyday versus donating it and getting a tax write off. Drives me crazy everyday being ordered to throw away so much. Also I'm not talking about produce, I'm talking about canned food and packaged goods that would be good for another year.
90 percent of my chicken food is free. my dogs often get free meat and eggs. my horses like salad which comes out of plastic sealed bags. and i get free brown eggs from my chickens
you are partially right, there main point is to boycott stores and make a statement, however this can defiantly produce what social scientists call a radical flank effect. that's when certain people in a social movement act radically in order to call attention to a movement which ultimately legitimizes the actions of moderates within the same movement. so if everyone started eating out of the garbage or finding ways to avoid markets the system would collapse or they have to purchase less food.
@aureliosjc They do say that they give some of the food that they collect to homeless people that they see along the street. There are also shelters in most large citties that give free meals to the homeless. These people do not have a monopoly on the wasted food in New York, it's free game. Obviously, there is food that no one else has claimed, which would otherwise be destroyed. They may seem weird to you, but are actually quite intelligent. They probably do more for their commmunity than you.
But think about it- if you bought something, and it went past it's sell-by date but wasn't mouldy, smelly or gone off, would you chuck it? I know i wouldn't. Plus loads of freegans give food to the homeless, or run Food Not Bombs kitchens for the underprivalaged. It's more than people being stingy.
The answer isn't to intentionally go homeless. The foodbank he mentioned at the end is the way to go. Companys should donate unused food there... not this.
humans are over-consuming, THATS A FACT! we consume so much that everything we NEED is in abundance. and we're just wasting resources and becoming profit-conscious zombies. i have respect for freegans & freeganterians!

As a vegan/freegan I wouldnt eat meat from the dumpster, just cause my body wouldnt be able to handle it physically and for health reasons, but i will still take it and give it to someone who does... but the meat is in the dumpster is fine to eat, there really shouldnt be an ethical barrier to avoid it because the animal was already killed, letting it rot would let the aniaml die in vain, if your not gonna eat it give it someone who will.
@ImCramped999 I wouldn't eat the meat, simply because I think eating meat is disgusting... but I can totally understand your logic. Granted that the meat was wasted, but not rotten, I would give it to someone who would eat it. Better than going in the garbage.

Even the stores claiming to make good use of the food they'd throw out waste a lot of it. They typically only donate bread products.
I'm glad someone is using the food others are wasting. Its not as gross as eating a half eaten sandwich, but if the food is still good, why not?

Well freegans do eat meat when they come across it, the only reason they go for veggies the most is because it's an easier food to find.
