    Dumpster diving is not illegal in Canada - trespassing is. So if there are no signs that tell you "no trespassing" then you are ok.

    I think dumpster diving is fun! I don't find it that gross picking food especially if it's a dumpster especially used for dumping food all you have to do is wash it and soak them in white vinegar and water and cook them if u can:) too bad in my country there are securities in every supermarket and they catch anyone who trespasses that area :(

    I don’t understand why these grocery stores don’t give that food to their employees to take home to feed their families rather then throw in the garbage. I would totally bring that produce home to my kids.

    It's just hard to believe that all of this food is just tossed in the garbage when the prices are so high inside the store. It's just awful.

    Lots of supermarkets sell their old produce to farmers for their livestock. Thats probably the most sensible thing to do with it. Giving it to middle class hipsters in the trash can kind of disincentives them from actually buying it.

    Dumpster diving is not illegal in most states. This video gave out wrong info. Plus, stores don’t own the dumpster itself. So, once the items r in the dumpster, technically it is the dumpster companies.

      @@jcwon498 same should apply to dumpsters in Montreal. Once trash is thrown out. It’s no longer owned by anyone. Technically, it’s owned by the dumpster company, but they don’t want it, and don’t care if ppl take it.

    This is cancer. If something is thrown away it was probably thrown away for a good reason. People just don't throw things away, especially if they pay for it to be sold.

    • @TheStoneSpiral
      @TheStoneSpiral 8 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Actually, stores throw away a lot of food for no really good reason. It can be damaged, or a new shipment has come in and room needs to be made for the whole pallet. For some big box chains the less labor intensive answer is to dump the smaller older amount into the garbage even if it's still fine and fit the entire pallet into place at once. This is actually a reasonably safe way to get food in many areas and it highlights just how much food is wasted in most first world countries. Recalls over food safety are rarer than you think. Besides your senses are very good at telling you when things like produce and meat are bad. If you wash and cook the recovered food well, you're more likely to get sick from eating too much rather than from the food itself.
      Where I work they let us take home food they can't sell. A lot of the time it's not even out of date, it's just a torn or bent package and even when it is out of date, that barely means anything. Most use by and sell by dates are completely arbitrary.

    • @terminal4635
      @terminal4635 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      TheStoneSpiral it's still mixed in with the rest of the trash. it's just something i will never be comfortable with.

    • @TheStoneSpiral
      @TheStoneSpiral 8 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Terminal Cancer You don't have to do it yourself. No one will make you. But this should at least make you more aware of the massive waste of food we see in the world today.
      Before a single bit of produce makes it to a shelf, tons of it that doesn't make the cut is completely wasted. There is no method by which large companies sort the ugly produce out to use it in different ways unless someone comes in and does everything for them. Each field is raised for a purpose, if it doesn't meet the standard of that purpose it goes into a landfill. With all the wasted food we have, we could feed the entire human population and have plenty left over. There is no actual food shortage as of yet, but distribution of it is critically low.
      If you never go dumpster diving at least consider altering your shopping habits by reducing your food waste at home and buying produce that isn't perfectly shaped or colored from your local producers. The highly sanitized food you see in supermarkets is a fraction of what is actually produced.
      People who dumpster dive do so for a variety of reasons. But at the end of the day their access to so much wasted food points out a very big problem we have today of over abundance. The kind where we have no ability, and frankly no desire, to distribute it where it is most needed due to concerns about money and an almost nonsensical sense of food safety in many cases (sell by and best by dates are arbitrary, a lot of perfectly good canned food gets wasted when it is perfectly edible for up to five or more years after the Exp date).

      Terminal Cancer TL;DR We waste literal tons of food every year, most of which never even sees a store shelf.
