  • Did you know? In 2016, 679, 900 tonnes of food waste was disposed in Singapore. With the help of Daniel Tay, a member of the freegan community in Singapore, we take a look at how freeganism can help to reduce food waste in our short documentary. The film also dives into the various activities that the freegan community engage in which aims to reduce consumerism and save the environment by repurposing discarded items and food.

    Hi Daniel, my hat off to you as it takes a lot of conviction, drive and humility to practise freeganism. This is more so in a materialistic like Singapore. I don't know whether I can do that. The closet I have come to is not to waste anything, be it be food, water, paper and power. And for anyone to judge or make opinion, I think they need to take heed of a First Nation American saying which goes: "Never judge a man until you have walked many miles in his moccasins" . You and your fellow practitioners are a very rare commodity. All the best for your practice.

Mostly people especially SOME singaporeans don't want to be label as BEH PAISEH! But for daniel i don't think he gives any damn shit about what people may think about him.

    The amount of food wasted in the world is absolutely astonishing and sad. There’s enough food for everyone and no one should ever go hungry but so much good food is simply thrown away or not distributed to others instead of thrown away. Some bigger cities have started free fridges where there’s a refrigerator available to everyone to either put food in or take what they need. Even restaurants nearby started putting things in there that otherwise would be thrown out. It’s a wonderful thing, should exist everywhere.

    I am also a waste collector but i have my own opinions about getting food leftovers. Please do not hate me for this but i am just stating my own opinions. About foods, if you intend to give it to someone else, like charity kitchens or someone you know, and know that they are to consume it, please ensure you do not collect from trash waste or even people who left them open in the environment for even a few minutes Who knows what manner of pests have threaded on them and due to contaminants in the air. I encourage people (as mentioned in this video) to collect direct from the wet or super markets. And also do inform the hawkers that you will be collecting from them after the end of the day and let them know before collection to store them properly and not just leave them on the floor. Other than food other things i am not so worried except to clean them or check for pests and cockoraches that may be very small or hiding in gaps and cracks, like in carton corrugated boxes. Happy hunting, do it for waste reduction, upcycling, recycling, re-using and the environment!

      Agree. I would like to add: bacteria, fungus, and viruses cannot be seen by the naked eye. By the time you see it, it's already too dangerous to even touch it, some are airborne. Viruses and bacterial infection can be life-threatening, or cause long-term health problems, leading to heavy financial burden to you and your loved ones. You should always use gloves, be it a washable rubber glove or latex gloves (and tongs) because bacteria/virus can enter your body through your skin/fingernails or any cuts or abrasions on your skin (eg. HFMD). You have to go back to your family end of the day/night...wife, children and elderly. The latter two are the most vulnerable, with a weaker immune system. Freeganism yes, but please be mindful of hygiene too. Too many people in the world die on a daily basis due to unhygienic conditions.

    • @davidtan7469
      @davidtan7469 6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      actually.. if you go to super markets.. and wet markets.. do you think the food is clean with no pest? this is why we need to wash our vege anyway.. i have seen cockroach in supermarkets also man..

    • @emptyangel
      @emptyangel 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yes... this is why we cook the food we eat. Cooking kills the bacteria.

    • @TheBugsification
      @TheBugsification 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I agree with you 100%. Though i know Daniel means good and the concept of "freeganism" is a great idea. But the way they handle to process of "freeganising"doesn't seem to be too hygienic, the fact that dumpster diving is such an accepted idea is really mind-boggling. Who know what kinds of pests has threaded along the food or what bacteria thrives in environments like that. I strongly feel that they should take the direct from the markets themselves as it is much hygienic and much safer; Even if someone cooks food laying out in the trash there is no guarantee that cooking food will make it safe. I'm probably overthinking it, but there are also the case with "spores' as spores are notoriously difficult to eliminate; Well, if one wants to really "clean" their food, overcooking is the way to go and it means the destruction of the nutritional values of food as well as the taste.
      Again, I really like the idea of freeganism but if they ignore the risks of basic hygiene in which they value "helping the earth" more; it's just a poorly executed idea isn't it? Though giving away expired food is actually ok given the fact that expired food is consumable given the right environment and/or temperature. Well, a small problem can lead to a bigger one and a small change can lead to a bigger one.

      A homeless will still eat that. You see the human body is simple. If your stuck in an Island, automatically you will start eating what you can find such as grass, tree twigs, leaves etc. That applies here as well, the body pays no heed to sanitary issues. An empty stomach is very powerful. Try starving yourself for 3 days your natural instinct will take over and you'll end up eating god knows what. Its all in the human mind

    Expiring products doesnt mean that its bad immediately, its the law that tells companies to put on a date go ckncern of customers, usually most of the products can still be used within 2 weeks after expiring date, depending on how u store it and what kind of product it is, dry ware like pasta and rice can be kept for a long time, fruits and veggies, just check from the looks of it, i have worked for a charity in the passed that did this when i was homeless to help, and i wasnt ur typically homeless person, i was always clean, refreshed, take showers every day etc....people couldnt tell i was homeless

      It is interesting that they just show young people down there doing the work, but lots of mobile older people standing in line waiting to get a free meal. My point is a lot of these retired people could be helping him out. Our "food bank" has lots of elderly retired people working there as volunteers. We have a church nearby that gives food away and most of the volunteers are elderly. Maybe he has enough help, as I don't know, but he sure could make use of older people.

    Yes, this will help to save the environment and reduce/ delay the number of waste (in any form and types and categories) going to the incinerators and thus landfill. We don't reject consumerism. We just hope there is a limit and people will consider wisely before they throw something away or buy new things. I am not saying we should not buy things, this can be difficult to achieve for everyone. Just give a little thought before you throw something away - maybe you can resell it, donate it or give it away to someone who might need it more than you?

    in my country freeganism is not work because everything dirt cheap like the food and the ingredients.you can find lot of food under 1sgd.(from fresh ingredients not from wasted sources lol)and you can save lot of money if you buy the ingredients in the markets and cook at home.but i like the ideas and support this positive action.save the earth

    It’s ironic because excessive expired food is one of many perks being a wealthy city problem. I like the efficiency work being done here but can’t help but think there is a reason freeganism could never build or become the source for great cities or great countries

    Most communities doesn't really give out free food to anyone who needs the food. They reserved free foods and food rations for low income family, disabilities person and old folks . But as for those individual who really need free foods. You must apply through CDC or MSF. But I can't promised you that you will get 100% assistance.
    Tak e me for example, temporarily I can't work due to my health issues. I did applied free foods and rations, but was rejected a few times. I was either told that they don't serve my area or they don't entertains individual. So I gave up hopes. I start drinking soya sauce, coffee to fil my stomach. Or if I have some money, I would buy some instant noodles. I have been eating instant noodles everyday. And I only eat 1 or 2 meals daily.
    And sad to share about my friends condition, my friend comes from a low income family. she and her mum were both staying in a 4 rooms flat. She had tried to seek help but was also rejected. So she give up and seek friends for help instead. We did help her.
