While I’m not a true Freegan, I am heavily into thrifting and taking castoff items from family and friends. I grew up in a wealthy household and I can afford things I want but my preference is to buy used or get free and save the difference. Most people do not understand my mind set but it works for me.

When my parents lived in Maine in 1956, the 🥔 farmers let you come in after they got the potatoes. You could pick up all the left over potatoes for Free. And that was years ago and a blessing to my family.

Tessie - Something that you forgot to mention is that along with you getting free stuff, you are always ready to give things to those in need. You will be rewarded for the kindness you bestow upon others if it’s done with love in your heart. We do need to donate when possible instead of throwing useable items in the trash bin. The free cycle organization is awesome!

It's unbelievable what rich folks just toss so as not to be bothered giving away or selling. It's a shame but it pays off for him n family tho.

I used to have a friend that worked for the Red Cross. They would clean out all the stuff every August. I was raising 9 kids who got most of their school clothes along with the neighbors kids. They also got bikes and lots of toys. The friend would drive a truck for of stuff and unload into my yard. What I could not find homes for we would give to goodwill. Most were new. Worked for my friend, my family and lots of my neighbors.

I remember as a kid I was soooo embarrassed that I slid down in the seat of the truck 😂😂 Fast forward 25 years and now I keep my local goodwill in business lol!! I just found an antique armoire in nearly excellent condition for only $15!! And you better believe I’ll stop on a dime to grab something that’s caught my eye. I recently found an antique fireplace mantle tossed out! I couldn’t believe my eyes..... it went atop my rav4 along with a few oriental rugs I found for el cheapo at a yard sale 😀

My dad lived in a Senior Community, then a loved one passed or had to move for whatever the reason, the families just threw most of the stuff away. Either none of the family wanted it or didn't have space for it or they just didn't want to deal with it.
My dad's now in a rest home and I mentioned to my neighbor how cold dad is all the time, she gave me a heavy, queen-sized comforter that she intended to donate to a re-sale shop.
What a blessing that was ❤️.

Great video! I’ve been collecting building materials for awhile now and am redoing a farm shed into a cabin for a rental to start some passive or semi-passive income. It is going to be very cheap to finish it because of the salvaging I’m done. Same thing when I had to redo rot in my camper. All the wood and paneling was free. I try to do as much as I can to keep good food or items/materials out of the landfill. We are such a wasteful society so I don’t want to contribute too negatively to it if I can help it. I also get free organic produce from the farm I work at.

I never thought a lot about it but I have a LOT of free things too. Most of my canning jars, 50% of my kitchen utensils, my bath robe. My bed, 80% of my blankets, all of my furniture... i needed a small blender (because I live in a travel trailer, which was also given to me) and my friend found me one off a neighborhood group on Facebook where you post requests for things you need. I love repurposeing items also. Today I was given a couple of beautifully done bouquets of artificial flowers in baskets. I kept one and gave one to my neighbor. I love giving as much as getting. Good morning Tessie from New Hampshire. Great video. You make an excellent point. I believe in striving to strike a balance. Just when I was in my glory, two summers ago, frequenting yards sales, I had to shelter on the farm. Took it in stride, thinking I would be able to get out more this summer. Still a challenge...
So our farm cottage is peppered with a mix of new and old. I inherited so many wonderful, useful items. Folks gave me canning jars and I bought what sizes I needed, especially 1/2 gallon. Its all good. I did buy a small bread machine with the money I made selling my larger one. Did splurge on a new free standing ice maker, which I love!
So nice to have ice on hand for blanching vegetables and for ice tea in this hot weather.
Yes, we also have Free Cycle. Folks are really good about offering gently used, helpful items. ~ Diane

I have been a freegan all my life. Even if I didn't want a free item I would take it and pass it on. Like you, I buy at yard sales and thrift stores. I have bought two new pieces of furniture in my life. One was a recliner for my disabled husband as well as the electric bed he needed. I'm 68 years old. That's a long time of participating in the second hand economy. I have cut the bottom (root part) off onions, carrots, and celery and re-grew. It works great!

I think the same way you do . 1/2 of everything I have was free or bought rummages or goodwill. Like my canning jars over 1/2 free from friends & families watching out for me gifting at least 20-28 cases of jars from jelly too gallon pickle jars. Witch is great for storing your flour sugar pastas& beans. And the older lidded jars for seeds. God bless you for sharing with us all. I'm hopeing the younger folks take the warnings and saving and us them to secure theirselves for future shortages we all will go throughout few decades. I'm 63 and have had a garden scence I was 21 and just married. I've always worked my families garden as a child. And learned so much more after becoming and adkisson member. My in laws taught me so much more about the growth of huge harvests . They used good old cow manure and 10- 10 fertilizer. The last time I grew tomatoes in their garden area I grew a 9lb.& 7lb. Ox heart tomato. And after years have gone by I find out they were biggest world record. I still have pictures of both the tomatoes.

Very much enjoyed this video and I never heard the word freegan before now. Only thing I worry about picking up certain things because of bed bugs. But I'm sure you can let it sit out in the sun or repaint or wash it. It's so good to see you healthy and happy again. Love you Tessie take care God bless.⭕💗❌

Thanks for sharing this Tessie. I am one who has always loved handme downs from friends and I do like free things too. I am one that likes to recycle things. A lot of my clothes I have bought used, or I have one friend who gives me clothes. I do not mind buying food past date. Or mark down food and freezing it. I remember when we lived in PA our church had a night they handed out food but what was left they asked us to take at times. We did and gave some as you do to people in our neighborhood. I think it is awesome that you paid off that much debt in 7 years. That is why you can have no debt and live off less because you do not waste money that you do not have to. I think it is sad when so many people will not buy used or be willing to take things for free. I know you are one that does it in the right way though. There are people who drive big Suv's and go to food banks to get food. The problem with that is sometimes we as humans feel we need certain items we go into debt for those but then later find out oh I can not afford that payment and eat. So then they have to get free food. So that is why we need to be wise with our money and be good stewards with it. I mean so much in our world is thrown out. We are very wasteful in America. So I think it is awesome you shared this. I mean we can have cute homes and look nice and it all be free. It is just in our world people worry to much about what others think or wanting this certain image but I think you are so blessed. You have a beautiful home you are debt free, You have a loving family who comes and helps you with things around your home. I am so glad my husband and I in life have learned to live on less and then when we have more that is great too. We both came from poor families and so when we got married we had to buy our own furniture and we got some free pieces too.

I have lived in "early relative" my whole married life. Just about every piece of furniture was something my mother or sister or one of my grandparents owned. This Spring and fall I repainted most all the furniture and finally said goodbye to my grandmother's kitchen set which was our dining room set and had parts gnawed down by multiple family dogs. We got a new dining room set and I love it. I definitely see the benefit of detachment from goods and reusing and recycling, but I also know sometimes it time for new and with no regrets. You have some beautiful free pieces Tessie!

Free is Free-dom from debt ! Last year I had soooo many volunteer tomato plants , I could not possibly plant them all, so I potted them up, babied them a while then set them out @ the end of our driveway with a sign saying they were free . In no time a lady stopped by & said, " Are these really free ? My teenage daughter is with me . She is starting a garden this year in our back yard - can we take them all ? " I said , " Yes, please take them all . Her daughter was so excited ! We have made it a habit to propagate fruit trees like figs, etc. & give as many away through the neighborhood as possible . I am not ashamed to take anything that's free !

Do much of what we have is either secondhand, and I’m always on the lookout for freebies. I’ve traded baked goods for beautiful curio, a gardening bench, and produce. Love this video, and your shirt is my all time favorite summer color!

I'm working on that kind of lifestyle, or at least trying to find things second hand or clearance. I have a goodwill next to the grocery store I work at. I went in looking for toys for my daycare and walked out with a food massager kind of like the one your reviewed, a stereo to play my old ipod on again (haven't used that in years!), a breadmaker, calculator, panini maker and huge cooler for $43. I estimate the retail value around $290. I feel like that was a decent haul. They're all things I was really wanting but didn't want to foot the bill for brand new. Tried them all and they work beautifully. Too bad it wasn't 50% off day!

I have picked up a few good roadside finds plus in my apartment laundry room people used to leave unwanted items (before the full building reno began) and I would take anything that was reusable. I have repurposed a metal shoe rack as a drying rack I'd set in my tub for hanging hand washed items to dry

People stopped posting on our Free Cycle because there were certain ones who took everything and resold it at flea markets. Most of what I own has been given to me. People that know me know if I can't use it I will find someone who can and keep things out of the dump.

Like you, the majority of what I have has been handed down to me or was given to me - and, of course, there are a few items I purchased. Our Freecycle isn't very active unfortunately. I'm not in the market for anything these days, but FB Marketplace is the best option in our area - or Craigslist.

I have always loved dumpster diving even as a kid. We used to live in a big townhouse complex and we got so much for free just by checking out what people threw away. This was back in the early 70’s thrifty has always been a big part of who I am and I really enjoy it. Something else that goes with it is spending money you need to do it intentionally with the biggest impact. When you buy it think about who you are buying from and the uses of the product. Single use products are a waste of money and space that will fill up landfills quickly many feegans are also walking the path of zero waste to help the planet so it is a better place for our children and grandchildren. I have a worm composting bin in my kitchen that I feed many of my kitchen scraps and now am raising chickens to feed the rest of the scraps to. This will turn waste like kitchen scraps and junk mail and cardboard boxes into some of the best fertilizer you can get with the worms. The chickens will also compost the scraps and give you eggs!
