    I actually see nothing wrong with this. I work in the bakery section of my grocery store, and the other day we had to throw out some boxed cookies that were "expired" by a few days. They literally just threw them in the trash. I think they should actually make it easier for people to claim these items, by maybe putting the food into brightly colored bags and setting them on the outside of the dumpster. People are starving everywhere, and someone could have eaten those cookies with no harm to their health. I've also seen them throw out an entire package of perfectly good eggs because ONE broke.

      What about if an employee wants to take home some grocery items that were going to be tossed in the bin regardless?? Would the employee get in trouble?? They shouldn't. My Mother used to say it was a sin to waste food, and I do believe that. I have seen such abject poverty in other countries-literally starving babies-so when I see this kind of waste I feel ill!! I am going to start dumpster diving at the supermarket near me when the weather is warmer. I am going to try & convince my teenage son to go with me-wish me luck!! It is pretty high tech over there-I am sure they have cameras. If they come out & yell at us, there are some smaller grocery stores around. I wish there was a place I could go diving for mortgage payments-LOL!!

      +Geny R. I'd say 99% of employees would be fired if they took anything home. Most grocery stores (especially Costco) will check employees bags and purses at the end of the shift and heaven help you if you took anything home. This is absolutely ridiculous considering most employees make minimum wage and would be helped considerably. It's gotten so out of hand in North America that it's absolutely ridiculous. Expired food doesn't surprise me it's when you see a huge dumpster full of food that's good until the end of the year or 2017 that blows my mind.

      @catfeatherss 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Carol Bei I know my local Costco does donate food to food banks. There are frequently full carts and even racks full of food left out back for the food bank to pick up. I have only ever seen bakery items though...rolls, bread, even pies at times. I wonder if it is because these are made in house and there is no supplier to answer to. No employee freebies though.

      comes down to liability my friends. Obviously people such as yourselves and I understand that there might be a small risk when ingesting the food we scavenge from the dumpster. Where on the one side, there absolutely no harm in giving this food away; the other side of the coin leaves companies in direct liability to be sued if someone were looking to purposely Sue said food store because they ingested a bad apple.
      If anyone is to blame it's your typical coffee too hot to drink soccer mom's who purposely ignore the warning on the cup, proceed to drink the overly hot coffee, and receive oral burns even with all the warning signs, then proceed to sue the place she got the coffee from.
      The lazy and stupid ruin it for the rest of us.

    • @clink76
      @clink76 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      there is just as much liability when food is sold to the public. The difference is money. In most cases they can't be bothered to take the time to have it picked up.

    This is crazy ! I'm spending like $150 / week on food when I live alone and I could just be taking this stuff for free ? . Are you kidding me ?!!!? I do martial arts and I eat a lot of food and the amount of money I spend on food in the recovery - phase of training is insane. I'm going to have to try this !

    The funny thing is that the more black spots bananas have, the sweeter they are! They're the best for smoothies!! The light yellow and the green ones are not good, as they are not ripe enough.

    !! Graham Jackson got me into dumpster diving about a year ago when he visited me in California with a mutual friend. Since then I have been getting about 95% of the food I eat from dumpsters, and I eat better than I ever have before. If you've never been, go do it now!

      PurpleGlobe sadly they lock up at lot of the dumpsters where i live and have security cameras ...one thing that really gets me is that they lock the dumpsters and there are several homeless people near the grocery store and dollar store.

    • @PurpleGlobe
      @PurpleGlobe 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      To everbody: yeah, especially in Toronto I found dumpster diving to be VERY difficult because almost all of them were sealed trash compactors. I live in California now and I am lucky to have a few local, small grocery stores that don't lock up their dumspters, and that's what I'd suggest looking for in Canada or anywhere.
      Smaller, independent grocers typically can't afford the investment of a trash compactor or a lot of security. I also wouldn't be too deterred by video cameras, they're not going to look at them unless there is a crime committed. And if you're not 'breaking' anything to get in, you're not committing a crime.

    I like how you explain things.. I am baffled that so much food is thrown away.. Just to share a little story a few years ago I had lost my job and I was struggling very much I did not care if I did not have food for me to eat but it broke my heart when I had to split slices of bread for my kids to eat and now knowing how these stores throw so much good food away had I known this back then I would have had not thought of it twice to go rescue some of this perfectly fine food that we could of so very much been thankful to have and eat. I am thankful now that I have learned to coupon and now I am even able to help others with my smart shopping I wish I could start Rescuing food to donate to people who really need it instead of it going to a landfill.. i live in the Usa.

    I've seen many a time, where people decide they don't want something and put it back on one of the random shelves. It could sit there like 12 hours or more before someone notices it and then gets thrown out. Then it sits there in the dumpster until you find it which could be days later (talking about meat and milk and other fresh items).

    I am on $726 per month social security check. I go dumpster diving cause of this fact and don't mind people knowing that is why I dumpster dive. I dumpster dive for my dogs, me and sometimes even my family, even though they do NOT like my diving cause of that 1 instance where the police stopped him just to harass my uncle, they did NOT even bring up dumpster diving. I keep dumpster diving and some days may find a good amount and some days don't find anything. I could ever live closer to the dumpsters, I would check them quite a few times throughout the day. They for awhile gave extra food stamps, even though the food stamps totaled the state minimum I am suppose to be getting in the 1st place $234, at the time I was getting $33, now I believe $68 is what I get until they go back down again and when I run out of food stamps and have no-more cash to use, I dumpster dive and when I need food again my uncle doesn't like going to town with me cause he knows I WILL check ever single dumpster I can when I am close to running out or have run out of food cause he did NOT want me to go to town, so I am Hoping to find food, I even find I rely on my own mother when I run out of food, she sometimes gives me cash when my dogs or me have nothing or very little, I know if something were to ever happen to her, I don't know and my uncles would move back to Illinois, I would have it very hard, much much harder than now, which I have done this before, I biked a total of 30 miles to and from, 15 miles to and 15 miles back, its gotten alot rougher cause of the heat. I could ever move to a town that had plenty of stores I would go dumpster diving alot. I wish mother would leave this town with me and hopefully live closer to transportation and businesses where it would be easier to go somewhere you needed to. THANK YOU! and GOD BLESS!

    My boyfriend worked at Panera Bread, years ago. I was happy to see that a few nights a week, a local homeless shelter would pick up bags and bags of wonderful food and bakery. Still perfectly fine for days. The nights the people didn't pick up product, they would give it to employees. A new manager came to the store. Stopped the employees from getting the food. I made a comment that they publicly tell people how great they are, giving to the poor. Yet you'll throw shit away instead of giving to your own employees? They don't pay anything, they give people minimal hours. There were nights my boyfriend didn't eat. Couldn't afford his insulin, until he got a better job. I guess they thought about their hypocrisy. They changed their policy back. We were getting loaves of fresh bread. Baked goods, etc. Wtf. You're going to throw it away. At least let your employees EAT for fucks sake, if you're not going to pay them. BTW, Panera got a nice tax break for these donations to the shelters too. There's ALWAYS an incentive for the businesses. Always.

    In the U.S. 30% or more of our food is thrown out a year. Just think about the people that dont have a home or people who dont have lots of money could be doing a lot better if these were donated to a charity like churches or food pantries. And for the products that are not food like WORKING electronics or holiday decorations or anything like that could be donated to goodwill or the salvation army. Some people are wasteful. If people want to end world hunger then maybe do so e of these things. Might solve
    1.) Make more jobs because the U.S. would save money on food and other products.
    2.) Feed mpre of the population.
    Anyone ever think of that?!?

    I don't see anything wrong doing dumpster diving, for me anything thrown inside a dumpster is free stuff for everybody who wants it recovered. I'm still alive today luckily!

    I have an issue with frozen stuff being thrown out so quickly after a fridge stops working, but I have gone to small stores where they literally refreeze stuff that is frozen and spoiled. It drives me nuts because this happens with some of the small Indian grocers I go to just to get a small taste of home and I have heard others complain about their bodegas and ethnic grocery stores doing the same.

    If you make a grocery list & stick to it, there won't be any waste, unless you change your eating habits.

    What are the best stores to dumpster dive at for food? I notice that places like Wal Mart and Winn Dixie have the giant dumpsters that have the shoot that leads to inside the store so you can't access them really...

    Mr do what you need to do in order to get corporate office owners look bad so that they can do better than that. You doing right and I will start back writing letters to corporate office staff and owners about what they do with food that can be given to hungry and needy people.

    When I shop I look for the perfect fruit or veg not because it is perfect but because it is more likely to last longer at home so I have less waste
