  • Review of the 2023 ASUS ROG Flow X13. This is one of the best thin and light gaming laptops you can buy! My unit comes packed with a Ryzen 9 7940 HS CPU and a RTX 4070. Just be careful which GPU you choose. Hopefully this review helps you out.

    if this is anything like the Zephyrus G14, then Advanced Optimus is off by default for new batches and you have to manually turn it on. There is actually a good reason for that. Both AMD and Intel integrated chipsets require ports to be routed through the iGPU to enable PCIe tunneling, so Thunderbolt 4/USB4 ports cannot be connected directly to the dGPU. ASUS standard practice for gaming laptops is to leave at least one USB-C DP alt mode port without Thunderbolt 4/USB4 as the designated direct-to-dGPU port. The HDMI port also is connected to the dGPU. That way you can get maximum performance out of an external monitor whether it is a DP or HDMI display (or both).
    While it makes a lot of sense from a performance standpoint, the trouble with that architecture is that, Advanced Optimus works by connecting the laptop display simultaneously to both the iGPU and the dGPU, once as display and once as virtual display, then suspending one driver or the other in software. When Advanced Optimus suspends the dGPU driver, external displays not routed through the iGPU stop working. Having it work that way out of the box obviously causes a whole lot of "OMFG ASUS laptops external displays glitches out all the time" outcries, so they now leave it off by default. People are less likely to pick up pitchforks over Advanced Optimus not being on by default.
    Just remember to switch your external monitor to a port connected to the iGPU (in this case, the USB4 port) before you turn on Advanced Optimus.

    watching this from the first model (r9 5900 + 1650 maxq), this thing is amazing! gaming, media consuming, even light 4k editing is a breeze. It gets noisy when the fans all get turbo'd up, but not that bad and using a non-noise canceling headphone will already take care of that problem, it looks like this model has a ever so slightly thinner chin compared to my model. so glad that Asus keep updating this model because I would like to upgrade to something similar to this thing down the line. and finger crossed they will always update the xg mobile that goes with this series of laptops. anyway, great content as always, cheers Matthew!

    I feel like they have ignored this x13 lineup after last year given how niche it is. If they had put a vapor chamber cooling system in it they could potentially run the gpu @80w which is significantly better than 60w . I wouldn't mind the other quirks that come with it if they did that, also the high price tag would seem more justifiable.

    • @Driftuner
      @Driftuner 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +26

      @@steroberry Depends on what you are talking about. On lighter tasks like ms office/chrome for example, i easily get ultra-book levels of battery performance out of it, which is about 13 to 14 hours on silent/efficiency mode and the fans wont come on for a single second during the entire time. It remais macbook levels of silent. Now if you start playing something like RDR2, you should consider yourself lucky if the battery can hold 2 hours and you will probably go deaf by the fans. The whole battery thing is very subjective, when you are buying such a small device that is this powerful, you should know what you are buying. It is obviously not as good on battery as an ultra-book, but then you also wont be playing triple-a titles on the ultra book either. Just stop being obtuse and know what you are getting yourself into and manage your expectations...

      @Driftuner I mean I just said what I know. Im not bashing at the thing for having bad battery it just is what it is. 13-14 is pretty crazy, I had the 2022 z13 and as much as I managed my expectations it just got pretty annoying to plug it in less than 3 hours most of the times (obviously not playing games, I never played games unplugged)

    I have the AMD Advantage G14 with the Radeon 6800 in it & i don't have issues with it getting too hot. The battery life is INCREDIBLE. I took it on vacation & it lasted 10 hours between charges. I also love that it has type c charging, so i don't have to take my big power brick with me. Oh & it charges fast af. Performance-wise, it's able to run almost every game at max settings at 60fps. I do get a bit more fps if I put it on a laptop cooling pad, but it's not really necessary. I thought i was also going to build a desktop as I've been using the same GTX 980m laptop for like 7 years, but using this thing made me realize how much more powerful gaming laptops have become. My iGPU set to 15 watts beats my old laptops dedicated GPU. I also love the size. It's perfect. Doesnt feel too small or too big. The only complaint I really have is that the white keys can be hard to read in a well-lit room.

  • @morten1
    @morten1 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +10

    This seems like the best compact laptop that can also be used for gaming, so far.
    But I would set limiter on its performance (fps/tdp/turbo), to be noise and heat free.
    I wish the manufacturers dgave more focus to that aspect.
    But I'm ok with having performance that matches a computer from 2-3 years ago, while keeping it cool and silent
    But it IS expensive though..

    Did you turn on Dolby Atmos Dynamic Option? It made a huge difference for mine like 50% extra volume.
    I love mine with a 4050 but wish it was available with 32GB or RAM was upgradeable. Thought about returning but ultimately ended up keeping it. The screen is really impressive considering it's not an OLED the viewing angles and colors are amazing.
    Also wish there was a bit more power but I figure I'll just buy an eGPU if I ever really need it. For 95%+ of my use cases the portability of this thing makes sense.
    And with G-Helper instead of Armoury Crate, I get zero fan noise when on Silent. The fans can be pretty controlled in that App.

    I have last year model and i did not really understand when Mat said that temperature is controlled better. My laptop on silent stays around 24 Db and you can barely hear it, though i only use silent mode while surfing web, like youtube and what not. On the other hand on performance while playing a game (older game, like kingdoms of amalur 2 - its 3050ti afterall) the noise does go up to like 40, maybe 50 Db, though it is measured through armoury crate, so might be not as accurate. The keyboard temperature does get hot, not very intrusive though, especially since you don't really have controls in middle top really either.
    At the end of the day - by no means i am saying buy last year model, unless the price is really that much more lower. I bought the laptop for the design, size and weight - al of these stayed the same/similar. Used to have old 17inch which was massive. This one - beautiful.

      well don't think this would completely answer your question but i have the 2020 model of this laptop, and other than gaming and video rendering, you could not even hear the fans armory crate software do a good job on managing the processing power adapting to your usage and when you do basic tasks it won't even turn the Nvidia graphics on. So basically, for basic tasks the laptop will act as if it is a Chromebook or something (and use battery like one too, which means a safe 4-5hr browsing session without charging). because every year the chip usually got less and less hot and power hungry, i think a safe bet is that this one is also do similar to mine.

    ROG Flow X13 is the best laptop I have ever owned. It does everything.
    If the heating problem is resolved in this version, the only issue is that the XG Mobile slot is wasted for most people. If Asus can release a budget-priced XG Mobile device, smaller, without GPU but with the usual collection of extra ports, perhaps with an extra nvme slot or two, it will be great.

    I agree with almost everything you mention. The laptop looks awesome, if this is the size you're after, but who wants to pay for those expensive, high-end components only to see them intentionally stunted by the OEM? It feels more like marketing or getting people who don't watch Matt Moniz videos to buy this thinking you are getting the actual performance of a 7940hs and 4070 when, in fact, that is not quite the case. But, on the other hand, the lid is ribbed for your pleasure, and perhaps that is more important than anything else :)

    idk man it could get upto 32 gigs of ram but on the 4070 model only, while optimally geting a 4060 model only end up with 16 gigs of memory maxed and soledered

    I'm loving the HP style glass screen they incorporated into the Rog Flow X13 but the design is ugh! Not so attractive with those lines going all over the computer. I AlthoughI just purchased the 20222 model Zypherus G14 and am not thinking about purchasing another laptop for a year, I'm good with this one but I do love the design of the X13 (Sounds like a DELL laptop), Just not the gray lines. They shouldbe made it all black. I also love the fact it's a 2-1. I don't see too many 2-1 gaming laptops. Anyone? I'm sure there are plenty. Guess I just never paid attention.

    The rtx 4070 uses around 100w max, regardless of the rated TGP (voltage limitation...). At 60w, the RTX 4070 scores a timespy score of +-10000, while at 100w it tops out at 12500. So a noticable difference, sure, but that's still +-80% of the max achievable score at 100w. (a 4060 running at 100w scores about 10500). So it makes sense to use a 4070 as it will have more RT cores than say a 4060.

    • @zerocal76
      @zerocal76 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      You make a good point but whats even more important is sustained performance. Scores don't matter if the CPU & GPU can only hit them and go back to their idle temps. I don't know about the 4000 Series NGreedia mobile GPUs but manufacturers weren't doing well w the 3000 series in laptops (in this area) and these really thin laptops were especially disappointing.

      I had a x13 2021 5950 (or was it 80?) with 32gb and it had an unpleasant high pitch fanprofile until you used ghelper to silence it under moderate loads. I loved the XG mobile dock 3080 with its generous 16gb VRAM. (this combined with a X16 would have been a better purchase in hindsight...) My current zenbook pro 14 fares much better and is overall a better laptop price performance and feature wise. But if you want a really portable real 2in1 the X13 is hard to beat. Just use a noise cancelling headset under load I guess.@@zerocal76

    Great review, but based on what you're saying, this laptop does not have Advanced Optimus. If it did, switching the MUX switch wouldn't require a reboot.
    But I have the 2021 RTX 3050 Ti version of this laptop, and apart from missing the MUX switch, I am happy with my laptop. (Although it did brick on me, Asus did send me over a complimentary replacement and it has been rock solid on both Windows 10 (the Ryzen 5000 version comes with Windows 10, as Windows 11 wasn't out at the time this laptop was released), and even Linux. And yes, the tablet mode is killer; if you put it in tent mode, the thermals get REALLY good.
