Over the years I’ve owned a BT50 and a HILux, back in January I bought an MY19 BiTurbo Ranger Wildtrak and I have to say it the most comfortable, powerful and economical 4WD Ute I’ve owned. Yes it’s more expensive than the rest but after owning it for 9 months it’s definitely worth the extra bit of financial pain.
I ended up with the same. I was looking at a new ute this year and tested the BT-50, Hilux Conquest, Nissan Navara, and Ranger Wiltrak. Ranger was by far the most pleasurable to drive with the Hilux the absolute worst in ride quality.
Before buying my Hilux i actually did a test-drive on every ute listed here (plus the BT50) to help me decide what to buy, and i agree with alost everything that's been said. However, i still bought the Hilux because it feels the most appropriate with my profession as a Construction Contractor other than that fact, i would have bought the BT50 or the Ranger no questions asked. #NoRegrets P.S. Here in the Philippines FORD dealer service sucks.
I agree -- one has to choose such a truck based in its optimized utility & functionality. In my case, I will also definitely chose Hilux based on what I've stated above. As someone who works in the farm & uses a vehicle multi-purposely, I find the Hilux to be the most optimized esp. for my need & driving skills, too. It may not have the highest HP or what but, hey, it does deliver! Amazingly so, applying some hypermiling techniques, I was able to push fuel economy ranging from 14 to 16 km/L diesel. And I find driving with 20 cavs (about a ton) of animal feeds at the back even on a dirt road to be not hard for the vehicle to do. So yes, in choosing which ute to buy, one must always consider its optimized utility & functionality. It will definitely deliver cost efficiency esp. if used in business. Greetings from the Philippines!
@@iantaylor989 you're off target a bit there, mate. Check out our reviews on carsguide.com.au where we have plenty of positive things to say about the D-Max and its stablemate, the MU-X. There's a lot to like about these Isuzus. Thanks for watching and commenting. - Crafty
@@carsguide I stopped watching your video's after the povo pack ute review were you rated the DMAX tops in most test and then put it eight overall because you thought they hadn't changed it enough
I tested a Navara, Triton, Hilux and BT50 when I bought a new ute last year and ended up with the BT50 XT for the ride quality, diff lock, Apple car play and reverse camera and it's where my 6'4 frame fit the best. Also, the 40K and a smidge drive-away price was including the first 3 services, for me, great value. Now a year later, and firmly in the for-what-it's-worth category, I can state my only complaints are the slightly higher than expected fuel consumption and VERY slow to kick-down auto gear box that's way more meh meh than zoom zoom. On the plus side, with a set only a set of AT's as modifications, it's going great through the high country and remains very quiet on the road and handles better on rough country roads than I expected being a ute. Thanks for the video.
David Anderson , that’s why I bought a manual transmission far more enjoyable to drive , and what’s better is the fuel economy one gets from the manual ! The Bt50 is a great ute in its own right , a true all rounder, I came to the same conclusion when looking for a new ute as well .
I would go the dmax out of any of these utes.. The price is an absolute steal and seeing Graham on Australian 4WD Action tour capeyork and glasshouse mountains on 31s and a basic lift kit well it has me sold!!!
Fair call, mate, the D-Max is a good unit, but I'm pretty sure the D-Max they run in those vids is not standard - as in, I reckon it has diff locks. Thanks for watching and commenting. - Crafty
Stoked to see the triton do so well and I probably agree with the outcome overall. However, testing to see the best off road but then saying you avoided using the diff lock on cars that had one to level the playing field is a bit like saying, we raced these 3 cars to see which would be the fastest but made the Ferrari and lambo stay in 1st gear to give the corolla a chance. You've got it, you paid for it, use it!
Jack Freeman, the Triton is a bit of a quiet achiever and packs a lot of stuff for a budget-friendly price. As for not using the diff locks: it was to test how well they'd all do using just engine, traction control etc. Thanks for watching and commenting. - Crafty
@@Malc664 Fair point. But those with diff locks (when engaged) are obviously able to tackle harder terrain than those without diff locks, that's a given - hence the "level playing field" scenario in this test. Thanks again. - Crafty
Those with active brake limited slip as standard gives pretty much same result as diff lock. So can't see why not use diff lock where that is the system of choice in the vehicle
Being only automatic transmission tested, I would agree with most you said, only will say, I have driven a ford, and the ride and suspension is from 1990 too damn hard and uncomfortable. Hands down, toyota will win offroad, as the ute is built for offroad (P.S. the DPF issue is and has been fixed. Most other diesel utes have a light to show the drive to run the ute 30km up a motorway and back). Just one request. Can all you guys be real men and test drive these ute in MANUAL transmission...
Reading the comments I realized that here in south africa we have the exact same level of competitiveness between the different brands. I own a older Triton and I'm glad to see it does really well here, I'm shocked that the Toyota placed so badly because it's supposedly the best thing since sliced bread.
You said hilux was reliable a few times in the hilux segment, i'm not sure if your aware of how bad the DPF issue is. dive deeper into that issue and tell me its still reliable.
So,you delegate, the D MAX to last, these are a more reliable vechile, than most of those u tested, own 1, and will say that in 4 years , it has never let me down, apart from a fan belt never had a spanner on it apart from servicing. I cant say the same about the others .
Pretty much all the others are reliable as well though so that is nothing special. Our work fleet is 3 Hilux, 3 Rangers, a LandCruiser and a Navara, plus I have a Mitsi Pajero Sport myself and none of them have given any problems.
Cheers Crafty, seems like Isuzu has been listening and included all the things missing in the current Dmax, Apple car play/android auto, diff lock, new interior, new safety tech and a welcome increase in power. 👍
Abu7929, no diff locks used in order to test how well they'd all do using just engine, traction control etc. Thanks for watching and commenting. - Crafty

I drive a Colorado and I don't understand how you get 12.9 klms p/l and I have an average of 10.9 over 87000 klms and that's towing a 2.8 ton van for 20000 klms of that.
You shouldn't bemoan people asking about the Amarok. What's the point of comparing only the most popular models?.. They're already being sold. Why not compare the less purchased (less known or understood) models? Throw in the Amarok (which is known the be one of the better performers) or an LDV (which is $20k cheaper than most of these models) or something.
SO you spend all your time off road in a brand new car scratching the hell out if, sounds a bit off the mark when you apply logic, if you want off road get an older land cruiser.
If the utes range from 50k - 57k and you can use a 3.2 ranger costing 56ish or a 2L costing 59, would make more sense to use the 3.2 you’d think, but then Ford might not win and they can’t have their sponsor money go to waste like that 😂😂

I'm really surprised that the Triton, even though being the cheapest, has 90% of the safety features as standard, is the cheapest to run and is the only one with 7 years limited guarantee + its off-road capabilities... The best imho
No perfect pick up Trucks for a wise and wide-minded client. For me, what matters most is less price but with more Features and with good interiors and can be used both in proper Cities and on offroads. Toyota: has durable and tough engine but with less features on its middle variants, poor exteriors especially the paint. (Easily fades) Ranger: more features and price is affordable but the PMS is expensive and availability of its spare parts is poor and expensive. Navara: has the best ride-comfort because of its 5-multi link rear suspension plus its 360 Camera availability on its middle variants but poor also on high loads and offroads. Others: high price but less Safety and features on its middle variants. As long as you have bought any of these units and served properly its purpose then i'm sure you won't be disappointed. ✌🏾.. By the way: i'm talking about those above-mentioned pick up trucks in the Philippines.😊
Absolutely brilliant review thank you - For ONCE someone has done a comparison with similar spec utes and not thrown in a V6....! Great stuff guys, cant argue with the result, the Ranger is a worldwide success for a reason and that was reflected here; Hilux is outdated older tech living on past loyalty but cant match the newer utes. The Triton coming second was not surprising either because its a great all round package - again great review very enjoyable
Mazda Service is great here in NZ with $200 capped servicing on 2 and 4wd utes. Over 3 years only cost $1200 and no vehicle issues in that time , great ute and very capable on and off road even though was not in this lineup.
Which is the best king pickups truck you have to put it on the test comparison competition in rally off-road championship the winner is the best the best handling stability manuvering cornering is the best and comfortable so Mitsubishi triton the best seller less maintenance costs affordable heavy duty, Ford ranger also good but expensive maintenance,if test in rally racing championship mitsubishi is the best king winner small engine but faster and long lasting heavy duty never broke down or burning like Toyota Hilux in rally Dakar race, cross country off-road rally Thailand to Laos and Cambodia winner Mitsubishi Triton 2.4liters
It will always be a HiLux for me. But is there a series of test for the cheaper utes? For the likes of Great Wall, Foton Tunland, LDV, Ssangyong and the Mahindra. They are cheaper and costs half the price of the above utes, but does its job as a work ute.
How can you say reliable when the sentence before you make mention of the dpf and no mention of the airbox. There are plenty of videos on TH-cam that show the airbox short comings.
I can't believe how so many viewers don't watch properly and complain about the reliability comment about the Hilux. He's obviously talking about how you can RELY on the off road capability and it is said in context of the video as he drives off road. Geez.
I've been saying it for years. Navara is the best of the bunch. The testers are starting to realise that these days. Best looking, best driving, has the least (to none) complaints, recalls or failures, best fuel economy (in the real world) and is reasonably priced. Only thing that's let's Nissan down is the service centres. Atrocious customer service.

Wow, ako rin hilux ako
Hilux💪
This bodes really well for Mitsubishi. The company really needs loyalty down under and the Triton should retain a lot of owners.
Isuzu is soooo underated

@@restuwibowo5905 I have never ever seen these idiots say anything good about a Dmax. I wonder how much they are paid to bag them?
Ian Taylor maybe because it’s not a very good ute?

How can the two most reliable double cab off roaders in the world namely the hilux & Isuzu be last on your list. Shocking
Hilux? Reliable? Try saying that to any owner who has had DPF problem with their Hilux
Jeff Green owned hilux for 11 years now. Still no issues. If that’s not reliable, then i don’t know what is

Fair call, mate, the D-Max is a good unit, but I'm pretty sure the D-Max they run in those vids is not standard - as in, I reckon it has diff locks. Thanks for watching and commenting. - Crafty
Ranger is overpriced for what ya get
Stoked to see the triton do so well and I probably agree with the outcome overall.
- Crafty
@@carsguide Yes it's good to know how they fair without the diff locks as well as it's good to know how well they perform with them.
I agree with you regarding manual transmission review of the utes. All of them only test using automatic transmission. Which is rather odd 🤔
Reading the comments I realized that here in south africa we have the exact same level of competitiveness between the different brands. I own a older Triton and I'm glad to see it does really well here, I'm shocked that the Toyota placed so badly because it's supposedly the best thing since sliced bread.
Im Navara user.. No 3...not bad.. Thank for the video
Wait how much psi is that 2L ranger running? How reliable are they really
Exactly, longevity may be an issue...
You said hilux was reliable a few times in the hilux segment, i'm not sure if your aware of how bad the DPF issue is. dive deeper into that issue and tell me its still reliable.

I was thinking the same thing my Colorado does much better
You shouldn't bemoan people asking about the Amarok.
What's the point of comparing only the most popular models?.. They're already being sold. Why not compare the less purchased (less known or understood) models? Throw in the Amarok (which is known the be one of the better performers) or an LDV (which is $20k cheaper than most of these models) or something.
The only off road vehicles are hilux and isuzu,
SO you spend all your time off road in a brand new car scratching the hell out if, sounds a bit off the mark when you apply logic, if you want off road get an older land cruiser.
If the utes range from 50k - 57k and you can use a 3.2 ranger costing 56ish or a 2L costing 59, would make more sense to use the 3.2 you’d think, but then Ford might not win and they can’t have their sponsor money go to waste like that 😂😂

No perfect pick up Trucks for a wise and wide-minded client. For me, what matters most is less price but with more Features and with good interiors and can be used both in proper Cities and on offroads.
Toyota: has durable and tough engine but with less features on its middle variants, poor exteriors especially the paint. (Easily fades)
Ranger: more features and price is affordable but the PMS is expensive and availability of its spare parts is poor and expensive.
