    D-Max hands down. Isuzu has nailed it in every aspect on how a pickup truck should be. May not be as plush as the Ranger or too hardcore as the Hilux but in this segment, pure reliability and durability is king alongside with the right balance of everything. Can't wait to see a head to head toss up with the Triton soon.

    I’m leaning towards a D-Max SX. Gets all the good mechanicals, engine, safety, towing etc - and i don’t need leather, 9” screen, dual climate, 17” rims etc. For the $10,000 (est) saving I’ll get tyres, canopy, 2” lift, tune, snorkel, bull bar, diff breathers, canvas seat covers etc (i know this all costs more than $10k). I’ll be getting a tow bar as well.
    Will use for work & 4x4 outings.
    Just seems like a sensible deployment of my $$.
    The 3lt engine is very tuneable & pretty bullet proof.

    • @Naessey
      @Naessey 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      everist22 I’m in the same boat and looking at same set up. Just wish the price hike wasn’t so much for the new model but understand why given the major jump from the last one.

    • @JDMEVOVIGSR
      @JDMEVOVIGSR 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Likewise. I have ordered 2 of the Dmax SX single cabs in the 4x2 variant for work and weekend suburban use. Very impressed by the level of features fitted to the base model ute (shares many features that are fitted to the flagship model). SX model comes with 17" wheels (steel) as standard.

    • @everist22
      @everist22 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Brad Yes - my mistake SX has 17’s. I agree i think the base models have all the important stuff - including safety features. Enjoy them - you’ll get the upfront tax depreciation as well i think?

    • @jefffisher5021
      @jefffisher5021 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi everist22 - I've been thinking the same, but given the promotion around all new suspension, I'm wondering what the the impact/effect might have on the new suspension by giving it a lift. Same with the tune. What's your thinking around this? I'm leaning toward the LS-U, but I must admit features that come standard on the ranger (push button start, towbar, tub liner, tailgate assist, 12 volt to tub) are missing and that's what is holding me back at the moment.

    • @everist22
      @everist22 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Jeff Fisher Hi Jeff - I’d be lying if i commented on suspension but I’m sure organizations like Old Man Emu (ARB) will have all that developed and sorted. My thoughts on the engine are that the Dmax 3lt is ‘under tuned’ - by this i mean that it is capable of easily producing more power. Personally I’m not a fan of 2lt twin turbo diesels that the Ranger has - i just think they work that much harder.
      Regarding spec levels - it’s really a personal decision. I want a good platform with a solid engine, all the safety, reasonable amenities (Apple car play etc), all the 4x4 capability (rear lockers etc). I don’t need carpet, electric seat, 9” screen, 18” rims, auto start, parking sensors (SX has rear camera) etc. I’m budgeting to spend that money on stuff i ‘need’ - tyres, canopy, snorkel, bar work etc. Most of the time i will use the vehicle solo for work and weekend 4x4 (with my wife). Our family vehicle is a RR Sport so I’m not considering interior ‘comfort’ - I’m more considering value for money, fit for purpose, and capability.

    i do think the Isuzu has come a long way, The price point and package is on point. i love how you guys have picked up on volume knobs, buttons or screen, just don't work well. the ranger has a certain stigma attached to it i just cant get past, now that holden commodore is finished i feel this has taken its place and every young soft city tradie has to own one. the hilux i feel will be the most reliable for all conditions, easiest to work on purely the Toyota engineering that comes with it makes it favourable in the rural regions. but hey, if they made 79 series cruisers in auto, with a 15k less price. nobody would buy a hilux.

    All three of these look great. I'm not really bothered by some of the small things that the Hilux is lacking, and I also don't care for all the fancy safety features on the Ranger and Isuzu. If I had to go out and buy one of these three right now, it would be the Hilux. Ford has a really spotty track record when it comes to reliability, and the interior just feels too cheap for what it costs. The Isuzu made a massive leap, I honestly thought it was just going to be another massive disappointment like the last one. The interior is pretty nice, the infotainment needs at least one knob for volume control, I'm not a fan of those buttons. The reason I wouldn't buy one is the exterior. It's just too ugly for my taste. The Hilux has the best looking interior and exterior in my opinion. The extra 20kw and 50nm is a welcome boost. I won't be buying any of these though. I'm gonna go with the Hilux Legend 50 we have here in South Africa.

    D-max no doubt, good run for the money, loaded with safety tech including a first centre airbag and very tough looking truck unlike the outdated facelift hilux which really hasn't changed much since it's release model and is so expensive with very basic eqipment/features not to mention the dpf issues that toyota has been having.

      Believe it or not alot of people buy the Hilux simply because it's cheaper to service in my country than the Dmax and parts too are cheaper, also simplicity isn't the issue here since most of those gadgets and stuff usually get replaced anyway. The Dmax looks like the deal here but it's already more expensive than the Hilux in my country and the ranger is only bought by the government since it's the only entity rich enough to meet the cost of purchase and maintenance.

    Planning to buy a brand new ute this year, I really value reliability, longevity and ease/cost of service/repair and dealer network in Australia, D Max is looking better and better the more I do my homework. Isuzu have always been a truck builder, workhorse stuff, lasts year after year to earn a living with, I'm hoping that DNA remains with the new D Max.

      My mechanic who is a car genius said to me last week he is starting to see a lot of 3-5 year old rangers with major engine failures. Apparently ford are happy to sell a car to their customers with a very highly strung engine.
      The 2.8 Toyota may not have the best power numbers out of these cars, however Toyota buyers can sleep easy knowing that their 60k investment hasn’t rolled off the factory floor tuned to within an inch of its life.
      It’s also probably why old Hilux utes for sale today have 300000ks on the clock and still sell for big money. People trust Toyota to build a car that will keep going and will be worth something in 15 years time.

    Not a bad review at all.
    Always liked the Ford. Grew up being a Ford man. But unfortunately I had too many problems with my XLT bi-turbo. It was such a nice car. However let me down too many times. I'll stick to my basic '20 Hilux SR. Hopefully one day either Ford get their act together with build quality or the Hilux gains signicant comfort. IaI'mnot that fazed about the small luxury add ons. I mean I'll have them buy they aren't make or break. Just want the drive quality of the Ford with the reliability of the Toyota.
    Maybe the D'max is the go 🤔

    Hey CarAdvice, though DMax lower Kw/Nw, did you feel that it was more relaxed in accelerating? The specs of all three appear to show the DMax achieves 300Nm at lower revs compared to the others. I may be wrong, but does this mean more linear acceleration and less gear changes. I drove a Ranger recently with boat in tow and while no issues, it shifted through the gears - a lot. Would welcome thoughts as everyone raves about Nm but may not be that straightforward in this test. Personally, being the fastest of the lights is not a key in my decision on next Ute.

    • @Drivecomau
      @Drivecomau  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That 450Nm output is available from 1600rpm to 2600rpm, where the engine spends most of its time and the main reason why this engine feels so flexible. Digging deeper, 400Nm (still a healthy number) is on tap between 1400rpm and 3250rpm - virtually your entire operating rev range.

    Having driven all of them, and being a mechanic, working on all of them, I do not rate the hilux for the money you pay, and the persistent problems I am fixing, its ridiculous. The ranger 2 litre is amazing, and the new Dmax is worlds apart, however, I spent my 72k on the new manual Amarok. The new Manual Amarok is incredible. If I liked autos, I would have bought the wildtrack 2 litre. But the new manual Amarok is so much fun to drive, and comes with all the conventional 4x4 high/low range, as said the braking, wet wheather control is superb, and i can drive a 300km round trip on $30 worth of diesel.
    And with 165kw(180kw on overboost) and 500nm(dynoing has show thats actually wheel torque) my 0-100 is around 7.5 seconds and it tows like a freight train. I am looking forward to the new Ranger/Amarok built vehicle next year!

I took a 2 L twin turbo that went beautiful too I don’t know which I want, I’m a bit lost and they drive so beautiful and it turns on a pin just everything about it is so good . It’s so light and feels better than a car to drive. I’m going to go to Toyota tomorrow morning and take a Toyota Ute for a drive and see how it goes . This will be interesting
