VW Amarok vs Ford Ranger vs Toyota Hilux: OFF-ROAD BATTLE!

- เผยแพร่เมื่อ 29 เม.ย. 2024
- We put three SUVs in a gruelling offroad challenge… Now it’s time to do the same with three pickup trucks! The Ford Ranger Wildtrak will be taking on the VW Amarok and the Toyota Hilux Invincible. It’s armed with a turbocharged, 2.0-litre, 4-cylinder engine, producing 213hp and 500Nm of torque! The VW Amarok seems more impressive still, thanks to its 3.0-litre, turbocharged V6 - however, it only produces 204hp. The Hilux, meanwhile, has a 2.4-litre turbo engine with 4 cylinders, 148hp and 400Nm torque. But we all know how sturdy and indestructible this pickup is! It’s anything to play for, so find out which of these is the ultimate pickup by watching Mat put them through their paces!

@@carwow plz do a compare review about pickup trucks hilux x class Triton
Epic comment.
not me
All trucks should have had the same driver for all tests for the best results
Exactly
How much you pay the same driver matters thereafter...
Yea and those are pick ups
And also the same tires
Nah, because one driver might be more suited to the strengths of a certain vehicle. run it 3 times with each driver having a go in each pickup. It would give more results to work with too. Each driver could have different results on the fastest truck.
Problem with a test like this is that a lot of the traction is due to tires, and unless they used the exact same tires on all vehicles, we will not really know which has the best 4x4 system.
as a hilux driver, it depends on the driver on how good the truck preforms. if u know your truck it and how to handle it , it would be easy
Idk why everytime I see Toyota getting a point it makes me happy😂...
Probably because you drive one...I do and I feel the same way 😁
Same 🤣

Arshaq Razeen. I understand you well ! But where the hell is the ISUZU D-MAX ??? It should definitely have been there too !!! Isuzu D-Max is a very good and beautiful pick-up ! I have D-Max myself and i love it ! It's my kid :) :) :) But the Hilux is very good too ! And without a doubt the best in build quality when it comes to these three on this test !!! :) :) :) UNDOUBTEDLY !!! :) :) :) TOYOTA HILUX IS ALSO A LEGEND ! :)

The hilux is such a beast in offroad, no wonder why it used as police/military car in a lot of countries
I mean It survived whistlindiesel
True idk why they always use Hilux?
@@lorenzoivanyoung5110 three reasons: one- the hilux is almost indestructible, u can hit a wall in 60kmh and the car would still move, two- it can carry incredible weight, pretty much more than every other toyota. Three- its pretty lightweight and a beast on offroad
You mean the base model?
Once upon a time my brother reversed his Amarok into his muddy garden with some railway sleepers, he offloaded them and tried to drive out... I had to drive 1hr in the middle of the rainy cold night to pull him out with my Toyota.
The Amarok had buried itself. The 4x4 capabilities were woeful, that version had low range, but had no diff locker or even lsd.
I've never seen an amarok really last offroad, especially in thought stuff. It is really a road and Gravel track van, it can get into a building site and maybe needs towed out again. Great for building inspectors and people with bikes.
guy in the amarok drives like captain slow
Exactly
Mnr. Weed ur right
Mr weed i agree
Amarok could've gone way quicker
I concur
The video should start with "This video is made for entertainment purposes so should not be taken seriously, especially the scores".
True words!
Why??
For you which one is the best ?
That's true, I think off road test is about capability not velocity, we have supercars for that.
This video is very pointless. Matt should leave these kind of tests for someone else
Most inaccurate testing I've ever seen smh
All were beautiful splashes but the Hilux was just majestic
Amarok Really Did Exceptional On All Important Off-roading Performance,
Bravo VW!👏👏
This video depends alot on the driver. It’s hard to do a challenge like this but it’s a nice video.
The first thing that came to my mind, when I click the video....
"That Toyota gonna last for the next 100 years"
ZiZi yeah nah dont build them like they used to, my dad still haves about good Toyotas are but they are the same as a ranger or any other of the higher end utes
no they are the best czz uo
Very ture!!!!!!
@Jason Creech bro, the toyota is always going to be the best because they will last for a long time and I mean a long TIME!
I really agree because my family is a Toyota family but why is it just Toyota why is it not Toyota built tough why is that ford and not Toyota?!? well the world seems it messed up!!!
As fun as these videos are I think I speak for everyone when I say if you're going to add scores for winners and losers based on the car, I would much prefer if the tests are actually equal and fair.
Everytime I think "I wonder which one is best?" You guys pit them against each other. Amazing.
The test with the turningcircle was so "unfair" as the driver of the Amarok creeped through there and the ranger just rushed through i mean it would be fair if one driver does the job but not 3
The driver of the Amarok was very slowly on that turningcircle that's why it got 46 sec, I thought I'm the person noticing that.
Totally agree
noticed it as well
Yep agree very slow
not just that when you know the times you are always gonna race against it so it should have been ran 3x doing a driver swap
11:05 how is that fair look how fast Matt was going compared to the others...
Matt should have driven all the vehicles to get more accurate time
@KATLEHO LITSOANE Also, how can you not use the low range of the Hilux and the Ranger just because the Amarok doesn't have it?
@KATLEHO LITSOANE This is a real off-road testing. Carwow is better for mainstream viewers. This is for real offroaders:
th-cam.com/video/Ld1bMp5Hh1I/w-d-xo.html
exactly
They did it on purpose so that it's all even at the end, it's not a proper test
I had fun watching this video
And the car that did the best splash is the hilux
Cant believe all the Suvs in another video were twice as fast as these through the loop race!!
All three trucks should be fitted with the same tires to be a fair test
Agreed. And should be driven by the same person on course based tests like the one for the turning circle (and should obviously be timed by a 3rd party not the driver).
Same engine also
No all trucks were fitted factory standard tyres which is fair
@@Altruistic00 Tires are easily changeable and if you are planning to go offroad like this you will absolutely want dedicated tires for it. There is no reason for them to not fit them all with the same tires.
Well there are 2 reasons. Either they were too lazy, or couldn't afford to.
@@william_hartman Put some bfg K02's on the amarok and watch it trounce over the other two.
Matt should’ve done all the tests himself, it isn’t fair to the cars with other drivers .

@@muaazmth2696 I don't think any sponsor like VW and Ford would like to see their cars in pieces. (Despite that claim I heard a lot of complains about this generation of hilux not being the most reliable car)
Im in my 3rd ford ranger in a row (2 2016 models and a 2019 now), one of my relatives have the Hilux and had the l200 before that and what I can say is, yes the Hilux is more reliable, my 2'17 rangers had issues eventually (first one, 17 XLT trim had an engine/turbo issue i dont remember the name and the 17 Limited trim was plagued with electronic issues all around). However, the Ranger is by far the superior vehicle if you are actually planning to use it as an everyday car and all that. Thats why I am in my 3rd one after having the last-gen l200 and hilux before.
one thing to ad aswell, the traction and offroad capabilities of the ranger is just in another level
Mat you should do all the initial tests as other drivers are more hesitant to be as aggressive as you are and then this is grossly unfair...you must do all tests yourself.
I think he knows that but they just can’t be bothered
You're right! There is a difference on how all the drivers manage the car. So it's a bit unfair.
Ummm guy ar
Yeah coca coola has a point
These tests are just for fun. When it comes to offroad its all about driver. 3 of them vehicles are the best in class really very few ups and downs between them
i would be interested to see the 4.0l v6 hilux against the amrok, i think its fairere then the bottom range engine against teh top of the range, put the too v6s together pls
That Amarok V6 Extreme didn’t come with the rear diff lock? I don’t believe that Matt. Also you didn’t use the off road mode that change all the aspects of the Amarok.
8:08 he went way faster uphill than with the other vehicles..

@@MartijndeRondeDesigner i don't think so for the vw
Agreed
"Amarok doesn't have low range mode so let's set everything in high range mode". That's the same as launching the Amarok 2seconds late in drag races as it had more power. This is ridiculous!
The Pilot Someone completely missed the point of the comment then...
That literally made no difference at all to the test. Low or high range has nothing to do with that test.
Actually it has a low gearing to act as low range.
It's true. The others do no need that much Hill descend
They used the hilux with a 2.4 powertrain, I'm not sure about UK, but here in south africa, we get a 2.8 diesel and a 4.0 v6 petrol for the hilux
Pls you must put a video of an Isuzu d max the latest vs the gd6 legend

That 3rd test wasn't valid because Mat drove over the hill with momentum while the other two stopped deliberately.
Agreed

mrnicktoyou even first test is questionable, because of shorter timing by human, its impossible to be precise in those short situation

@@choose6174 that too, but I know its not scientific test and so on, but I dunno, I don't like it personally
Matt tends to carry more speed through the obstacles than the other two drivers. Making it easier for his vehicle to climb. Thus making all these tests not only useless but also erroneous. Still entertaining though lol

This video is so good I want to watch it with my friends
Australians - Gunshot creek “Easy as mate”
Matt - Wet Quarry- “whoooooooooooo wowwwww, Big splash”
The main take away on this video is that the VW Amarok is capable offroad, even though it doesn't have a locking differential.
In the end, all these trucks can get the job done, so the choice is up to personal preference / brand loyalty and how much TRUCK you can afford.
Danilo Munhequete my Amarok Canyon has a locking differential
Outdoor Layne Umm no it couldn’t. A car would wouldn’t make the first metre on any of these tests.
Outdoor Layne it’s a pretty relevant test for most customers. People aren’t buying these utes to go rock-crawling up some mountain. Also these channels can’t just borrow a press car and risk serious damage from hard-core off roading.
My Amarok has rear diff lock. I think it would have been good if they had used the Amarok with rear diff for better comparison 😊
We don't get Vw amarok or Ford ranger in Pakistan. So our only choice is Toyota Hilux
If my life depends on it in Africa or the Outback: Hilux all day long. The "rebel group" choice also all over the world.
mac stone but you live in a big city, never go offroad, go to mall on fridays and eat in pizza hut on saturdays. You better choose te most confortable one.
@@EngMecanica-wd9ed I do NONE of those things you mention, but maybe I am the leader of a rebel group, who knows... :-D
There's a good reason why UN have been using Toyota trucks for many decades across the world.
The toyota is the "rebel choice" simply because of availability....it's not like they are out cross shopping between brands. lol It's literally because the UN used them for years and left them behind for local govs and the rebels stole them. Not trying to say its a bad truck by and means, but definitely not the strongest contender in this competition. The Amarok is the clear winner seeing how it's keeping up/beating them both on every test with street tires.
What happened to the Amarok being 250hp+? Have the new models been detuned in Europe?

As a 4x4 fanatic in the heart of South Africa and owning a farm with the highest level of 4x4ing and a registered course. I've come across that the Toyota Hilux and land cruiser 79 beat any other truck there is. VW do normally struggle in more intense off roading as well as the Ford. The Toyota do last a lot longer in harsher conditions
But real off-roading isn't about speed but more about how easily it can climb up mountain roads and how well it sits on the road while going over obstacles or up mountains
