  • The all-new BMW i4 M50 provides incredible performance on a dual-motor EV platform. With 536 horsepower and 270 miles of range, it is a compelling vehicle for performance-oriented buyers. We go head-to-head with one of the best all-around EVs - The Tesla Model 3 Performance. At 5,018 lbs the BMW is a hefty sedan that has to overcome weight by packing in a lot of power. Is it enough to beat the Model 3 Performance to 60mph and through the 1/4 mile? In this video I break down specifications, physics behind launches, and finally provide simulated 0-60 and 1/4 mile times. Find resources and timestamps below:

Thanks for watching! Race the i4 and Model 3 here: www.motormatchup.com/simulation?id=61d872a20190a600091f58b1
In the video I calculated wheel torque/force as a combined value, but it would have been more accurate to calculate the front and rear axle individually. I wanted to keep it simple and the final values will not differ enough to change the final acceleration calculations.

Great work! You should send this video to the guy at Carwow, so he’ll stop rigging the races with M3P vs. the M50. Lol

Haha thanks. Yeah I saw that video.. It's unclear what the mods are on the M3P as well as the SOC. Both are huge variables.

@@MotorMatchup Some say the body kit on the Tesla as well as he didn’t disclose the SOC on eac car battery. Both very plausible and potentially stacked in the M50’s favor.

@@MotorMatchup The BMW only had about 57% SOC in the CarWow video.

@@Clayspeed bmw had 56% charge only has peak power at 90% SOC for 10 seconds.. more than enough for a drag race yet wasn't able to deploy its full power. 19inch wheel m50 will be quicker still, I've had to sit through car wow videos of the M3p vs my911 where somehow the 911 can't do sub 11.5 (tesla 11.8) yet in other videos 11.1 all day long.. sometimes real world match ups don't go your way but you can see by the way the BMW reels in the Tesla which is the quicker car in the long run and rolling from 50... or is it the usual tesla pull out of a race at 60? happens a lot in the 911 but there is shock seeing me side by side with 3.1 seconds HA

@@ChristopherBennett81 I’m not discounting the BMW is tuned for more top end, but it’s hp advantage would have to be significantly greater (over 600hp) to pull hard above 100mph. This isn’t the case. The 19” do also give it an advantage, so thank you for adding that. He also tests the M50 independently and the best he got 0-60 was 3.7 seconds. And the M3P will still do 11.4 - 11.5 with ~80% SOC. See this video… th-cam.com/video/VfsDzfLH_Eo/w-d-xo.html

The BMW i4 M50 is 4883lbs DIN. 5018lbs is EURO which is DIN + 75kg added of luggage and standard drivers weight. If you modify the weight to DIN to match the Tesla's DIN weight that was used, the M50 runs 11.46@120.2 mph. Great video's, love your channel and it's pretty incredible how well it simulates things almost accurately.

I’ve read that the m50 limits max power to 10 second bursts which might change things a bit. The Mach E GT is much worse with just 5 seconds of full power. Also, you didn’t mention aerodynamic drag which is a big factor at higher speeds.

Sorry, no chance Tesla is pulling more power than they stated.. WHP should be lower than engine/motor HP always will be.. also the weight for the BMW is EURO weight so 75kg driver and oils need to be removed.. th-cam.com/video/pbdiQ9FjBwc/w-d-xo.html, as you can see from carwow real-world drag its neck and neck after initial jump gained by the Tesla- overtake, is closer to 100mph not 130mph.. real world always wins as I can bet a large sum BMW underrate the power in their electric cars just like they do in their ICE.

    • @thang1742

the car wow was a biased drag race.. tesla had inferior tires, wheels and a retarded aero kit who knows what % of battery go look at drag races and all show the m3 having better times. bmw electric is showing its power in burst stages not consistent power.
