Unique indeed. Let's cripple a model 3 performance with more drag on : front bumper, spoiler, diffuser, side skirts, side mirrors and less optimal rimms. Then state this represents the performance of the Model 3 performance towards its 2 years newer direct comparison and state that the BMW is faster. While knowing every M3P does a 11.8 seconds quarter mile.... This is rubbish. The only reason why this optical 'tuned' car is used is because of AMT getting some exposure (which they had to pay for no doubt). @Yvon Q. not sure if i'd consider them overpriced, especially since i really dont factor in the self-driving packages into price or value. i think the model 3 is pretty competitive in price, espeically when compared to the base and long-range models, but i'd rather go with a more reputable car maker instead of one that will remove basic features and replace them with much worse solutions.

I still remember that factory specs Model 3 performance completed 1/4 mile in 11.7s in previous carwow drag races. I am not sure that this 12s score was caused by the environment or the modification, so it is hard to say that i4 can beat tesla in drag race. Anyway, I think the weight difference can definitely show the gap between the two makers.
Totally agree. So the show is just a show. They can actually setup whatever result they want. Even Carwow themselves drove Model 3 Performance for 11.7s with 1/4 mile in their own previous test. Now it became 12s in this race. Well….

As a Tesla S owner and an ex-BMW owner, I found that the BMW certainly has better car body built. I never had acoustical problems when I drove my my old BMW. I’m already on the waitlist of the i4.
BMWs are nice when new, but get a lot crappier as they get older. Repairs are ridiculously expensive and common. As they say, if you can't afford a new BMW, you definitely can't afford a used BMW. Teslas go forever.
Tesla is not much better. Tesla fanboys be like ooheenn ooheenn... Just for fucks sake. The ealier model 3 runs were done in British summers (perfect temp range for electric cars). The BMW, inline with other german brands, did better than their claim unlike American cars which always underperform compared to the claims. As for aero, the BMW i4 is 400KG (almost 900lbs) heavier for gods sake. Could it be possible that battery thermal management on BMW better than Tesla? Could it be that Tesla had a battery degradation issue? This is the first test but its surely not going to be the last. And whats up with the childish claims of BMW paying money to car wow? You tesla guys are immature imbeciles.
What happened with this model 3? Every other test I’ve seen from you guys had it at like 11.6-11.7s but this was all the way at 12s. Did the mods the owner put in end up slowing it down?
This channel has never run an 11.5. the fastest they have ever done is 11.7. Outside of this channel, there are a lot of M3P running 11.5 and even 11.4. Carwow is shady with the times they get for the Tesla.
Tesla P3D looks like I was thinking of other channels, but yes most I’ve seen from here were around the 11.7s mark. This one was pretty significantly slower than any I’ve ever seen from them, and it’s wasn’t even raining or bad weather like it’s been in previous tests
It will be even slower soon, in Europe anyway, new rules stating any new car sold from 2022 will have to be fitted with a speed limiter! Thin end of the wedge, enjoy cars while they are still enjoyable lol
I guess it would have been a boring video if Tesla won all the races again knowing what we all know which is that the Model 3P does the 1/4 mile reliably in 11.5-11.6s all day unless your state of charge is really low. Probably ran the SOC down low so the BMW could win some of the matchups. This is clearly an entertainment channel and not a scientific comparison.
I keep saying in the comments that electric car drag races are useless without showing the SOC. Carwow refuses to listen and it’s an obvious bias. Hoping they start to read comments like yours and start doing the right thing for these vids.
They implemented a soundtrack which doesn't really try to copy that of an I6 engine, but basically captures the essence if what makes the I6 sound so good. It's hard to describe, but it sounds really nice while still different than an ICE.

Obviously it could be using the exact same rotors and pads as Tesla and we would see the result shown in this video. In that case, the brake hardware would be identical but the actual implementation for BMW would be worse.
I love the fact that braking was done at 100mph (instead of 70!), but it's a bit of flaw since you need less than 0.1s difference in the reaction time for that type of distance. You should measure the braking distance electronically (not just white line on the ground). Do it 3 times at different Locations on the track to account for variations on the GPS as well. After 100,mph the BMW is just destroying the Tesla even with the weight which is impressive . Guessing typical bmw and the stated power numbers are probably lesser than the actual power output.
In the context of cars of similar size, weight not a big issue as speed climbs. Drag and rolling resistance become dominant where peak power matters. Tesla peak power of 490hp is delivered around 50/60mph I think where its power starts dropping thereafter with field weakening. No idea what power curve against speed is like in BMW but wouldn't be surprised if they've gone for more sustained power at higher autotobahn speeds like Matt said rather than BMW necessarily being conservative about its peak power.
Great video, I think it captures well how the BMW has a nice top-end acceleration and regardless of 1/4 mile times in the video and appears that under the same test environment, the BMW will eventually pull ahead. So if a Tesla ran quicker a seperate video, that would tell me that under the same environment side-by-side, the i4 would still be the quicker of the two. Did anyone notice a quick shot of the BMW's gauge? It showed 56% SoC, and if you zoom in on a few shots, showed 134miles of range remaining. at "100%' SoC, looks like the range would have been 240miles, or higher considering they were basically accelerating a few times and this particular test wasn't to maximize range.
That Tesla has some rather crappy body kit, that creates significant drag at high speed. In all other videos (including Carwow) standard M3P runs 11.7s, sometimes 11.5s Never 12s. This video is just not representative of true performance which is a shame by Carwow. It's like Mat somehow forgot about that Tesla's body kit when he commented BMW is better at high speed. It's just not.
@@Tom_Mroz What data do you have to support the BMW not being quicker at higher speeds? Additionally, let's say you raise the Model 3's .cd of drag to .30 because of the body kit, it only raises the 1/4 mile time by .04 of a second in simulators, which are 99% accurate given how well they predict a vehicles real-world 1/4 mile times. The BMW is also handicapped with it being the 20" wheel model with wider wheels/tires too and not the skinner tired 19" wheel version, so if we want to split hairs.
@@theRappinSpree agreed, the splitting hairs is pointless because the BMW is also handicapped with its wider 20" wheel/tire package which according to BMW's press release raises the .cd of drag from .25 to .32, which likely makes more of an impact than the Tesla's aftermarket body kit in terms of .cd of drag.

@@DjNikGnashers 0.2s is actually a pretty big difference. The Model 3 is very consistent; I wouldn't chalk this up to different conditions. More likely the bodykit and changed tires/wheels is making the car slower.
@@a.banana LOL 0.2 seconds is NOTHING, how long have you been driving ? I'm 52 mate, and have been driving since I was 17, and owned many performance cars. 0.5 seconds is nothing, over a 1/4 mile, you can lose that by simply spinning a wheel by 10% more than you need to over the first metre (science states 15% wheel slip is optimum for launching). There are probably over a dozen different things which have made the 0.2 second difference from driver reaction to temperature to weather to tarmac quality to the tyre condition, etc etc etc. Do you even drive a car bro ?
@@DjNikGnashers For a car like the Model 3, a difference of 0.2s is pretty large. Usually that kind of variance is seen when Model 3 have different tire/wheel setups. The larger rim sizes tend to hurt the quarter mile times slightly, as well as grippier tires (the traction control doesn't adjust itself to take advantage of the extra grip). In this case, not only does this car have custom rims and tires, it also has a bodykit very likely adding unnecessary drag. I'd say it's more likely that the modifications made it slower.

Also Teslas turned the power off the front motor after 5 seconds. If they continue to use it for more than five seconds, they'd burn up. The front motor is of the induction type where 10-15% of the power delivered is converted to heat. You present your "claim" as a fact by referring to an acceleration video of Bjorn. In that video you see the power of the front engine going to zero as soon as acceleration is stopped. But this is actually very normal behavior. Its more efficient to drive on one engine so as soon as accelleration stops and there is only the need to keep the speed constant so one motor will not get any power. The beauty of it is that the front induction engine does not create drag when not powered (where all other PM do when not powered) Please tell me you did not fabricate this overheating story because (and only because) you saw the Fpower go to zero and simply did not understand the reason behind it? Last thing; You mentioned that the BMW (last sentence) has two PM motors, but thats not true, they don't have permanent magnets at all. Thats the whole reason they use brushes in their motors, these are wear parts and need service where PM motors do not. Motortrend wrote an article about them, some quotes: "BMW is betting that modern materials and sealing technology will allow modern-day brushes and commutators to last for a reasonable service interval in the life of a modern EV." "And like your brake pads, the brushes and commutator generate dust and wear out, requiring periodic replacement, which are some of the reasons these are not currently used in any modern EVs or hybrids." "The biggest takeaway from this is that brushless motors are preferred over brushed because they do away with the maintenance and dust that come with brushes rubbing a wearing surface (the commutator), both of which increase the lifespan of the motor. Disadvantages are higher initial cost and more complicated motor speed controllers that typically require three Hall-effect sensors to properly measure the positioning of the stator and rotor (although some modern controllers have found clever ways to do without these sensors)."

The only problem that would stop me buying an Ev beside tesla is the unavailable supercharger like network and it would be somewhat problematic when it comes time for a road trip
I'm pretty sure the network will be available for non-teslas eventually. They are testing it in Netherlands already and have said the network will open for everyone in Norway this year. Well, without the pressure from EVs, and let's say it, Tesla, they'd still drag their feet. BMW had a glimmer genius with the i3, really interesting concept, but then continued dragging their feet. If they ever come up with a good petrol based gas replacement, they better do it in the next few years. Kudos to Tesla, Nissan, Chevy, Renault for pioneering, to the Koreans, Ford and VAG for the second wave.
The weather (wind) could be the reason. It is hard to have the same weather condition all the time ai think. When Model 3 Performance will get 11.7, BMW should 11.6.
I am surprised at how nice the Beemer looks in that color. Not really a contest though, if you think how much better the quality in the i4 M50 is. Especially interior. 4k difference only, that's a bargain for the I4. Now put a Taycan 4S with pb+ there, should be a very close race. The Taycan has mostly done 11.7 or 11.8. And the e-tron GT, too. Though I suspect that is making more like 12.1.
My M3P does 11.7 every time not sure what’s up with this one. Carwow never ever mentions the SOC of the cars which can make a difference unfortunately 🤷🏻♂️

Ummm *NOT* to be a Tesla fanboy but something’s going on here. M3 Performance does a 1/4 mile in 11.6 seconds. Even on other carwow drag races it did 11.7 sec. Was the body kit M3 chosen specifically to make the BMW look good/better?
The crash pads for the high-voltage battery may not have been assembled. This can cause damage to the high-voltage battery in the event of a serious side crash and may cause a short-circuit increasing the risk of a fire. The BMW i4 vehicles affected by this recall were manufactured between 15 September and 30 November 2021. BMW recall code: 61430600 Affected models: i4.
You need to re-run this with a normal M3 Performance - I doubt that body kit reduces drag, I suspect that it adds rather a lot hence the BMW pulling away at higher speeds. The 1/4 mile is very slow for a M3P as others have stated. Lets see it run with two stock cars then we can see which accelerates fastest.
A standard Tesla Model 3 Performance should do the Race in 11.8 sec, they always do this time. Mat already proofed it too in his races. So its as fast as the Bmw , but still good Job Bmw on the acceleration on this car , because it pulled very good in the rolling race

Its races like these that make Carwow so good. Nobody really knows the outcome of a unique matchup like this and were all impressed nonetheless
This is not journalism (it's entertainment) and some viewers will now wrongly think they will beat any model 3 (including the P) if they buy this BMW 🤣

I never had acoustical problems when I drove my my old BMW. I’m already on the waitlist of the i4.

my screaming v8 does a fantastic job at noise cancellation.
@@dark1tdr Oh I totally agree that "complete silence" is horrible. I have spent time in high security government data centres with walls specifically designed to absorb all sounds and it was very jarring. So much so that we were encouraged to only spend limited amounts of time in the room without a break, but sound cancellation technology could be implemented to remove all "UNWELCOME" noise like tyre rumble and wind noise and complimentary technology utilised to enhance driver notifications for useful stimulus like tyre squeal (when the tyres are operating at their limit) etc. The system could also translate the sound of emergency vehicles approaching from front or rear and convert that to a warning sound AND more importantly a visual indicator for when it is dark, raining and you have your sound system cranked up. How many times have we seen oblivious drivers obstructing a fire engine or Ambulance because they simply hadn't noticed them for various reasons.
I only want distractions that are important and useful. I'm sure there is some middle ground and with a little R&D i'm sure it would be possible to soundproof a car more effectively with technology than by just stuffing 150KG of wadding into the voids and the bulkheads

What were the battery percentages? It matters more than how much fuel weight is in the tank.
Battery temperature is more important even

Thanks heaps Mat! Be keen to get M50 over Tesla 3 haha, for speed & fine German interior
@@Tom_Mroz until someone else does a video with both cars under the same conditions (like this one) this is what we have to go on. So it is quicker :)

@@philipmccambridge7003 an m3 beats a model 3 performance any day anyways so
Nope that’s what they do
Very interesting drag race. Just goes to show how far the progress of the modern EV has come. The BMW is certainly set up differently too the Tesla. Would be great to see a drag race between Aud BMW Mercedes and Tesla.
Very surprised well done BMW I did want to order one for my next car but I was told 12 months wait for factory so sacked it off, I’ll revisit next year maybe this or IX
12 sec for the model 3. I never seen a 1/4 on a 3 performace that slow.
Sure.. but in rolling race u need trap speed. Looks like BMW will be slower w higher trap speed. Tesla needs to give the M YP power to the M3p now to keep up.
@@relaxingtravel-LosAngeles
BMW claims a very flat powerband for the i4. If Tesla wants to beat them, they'll likely have to implement new motors which can keep peak power like the Plaid.
@@a.banana Tesla can do that with the 3 now, they just choose not to do it.
@@PerformanceRaven
That's hard to believe. What reason would they have for not unlocking the powerband? The Long Range and Plaid S are so much faster now that they run basically no risk of cannibalizing sales.
Haha.. you cant expect optimal runs every time...... conditions change. Only thing that is important is that the conditions are the same for both cars. As here.
I thought Carwow tested the M3P through and through and it always do 11.8s? But for this test only, it has to be 12.0s.. Hmm..
Wow, who would have thought that on a different day with different tarmac different temperatures in a different car, the 1/4 mile could be 0.2 seconds different !! INCREDIBLE !!!!!!!!
@@DjNikGnashers
0.2s is actually a pretty big difference.
@@DjNikGnashers You sound childish
@@DjNikGnashers
For a car like the Model 3, a difference of 0.2s is pretty large.
Prices are a bit off here. The way you're stating it, it looks like the BMW is just a tad bit more expensive. I just went into their configurator and if I put everything in that the M3 Performance has at your stated price tag, I am 20k higher for the BMW at $81,975...
Also looks like that M3 is modified.
@1:47 Matt's F1 car sound effect was genuinely impressive! 😂🤣😂
M3P's usually hit 11.6-11.8 in a 1/4 mile, even in the rain... Oddly slow here but cool none the less. BMW looks better imo
I get 12.0 to 12.3 in my long range on a poor road which is odd that it's the same speed as a perf. The bmw does look nice though, once the electric infrastructure improves tesla are really going to have to up their game
I honestly hate how the new bmws look. That grill just ruins it imo
I blame it on the body kit
Slow time for the Tesla normally it’s 11.8 and I have seen an 11.7 so 12 is poor probably the body kit has added drag
Look up dragy. A M3P can easily do 11.5s. Problem with carwow is they let the cars sit and get a cold battery

Woah I'm shocked the BMW beat the model 3 performance, however that model 3 clearly wasn't running at its best time, these cars are capable of running 11.7 and would've been able to beat the BMW. My guess is that the kit may have been screwing with the aero, but nonetheless, great vid mat! Unique match up!
Maybe the BMW is capable of an 11.5 then? Here today the BMW is faster

@@number1Schumacherfan Again the key word here is maybe, but we for sure know that tesla is capable of a 11.7 in its stock form

I can only imagine the engineers at BMW spent good money making sure it was programmed to be just a smidge faster than the Model 3..
The weight difference...
The power difference is quite obvious. But Tesla are the ones to beat, wouldn't have thought BMW would release a car that was slower than the biggest e-competitor.
But it is not. The M3P was in this show several times and always 11.8 seconds at the quarter mile. Don't know why this model is slower, could be because of the optical 'tuning' or low SOC?
@@Maarten_vd
Yes maybe this mods affect the quarter mile time but they shouldn’t affect the 0-100.
Just Tesla overestating their numbers as always and BMW underestimating as always
@Maarten van Soest I wouldn't be surprised if it is drag. They have changed the aerodynamics and that rear wing looks like it will add quite a bit of drag over the standard spoiler.
To quote Yianni, M3P is 11.8secs all day every day to the 1/4 mile.
It's just ridiculous how heavy the i4 is.
yeah, and the M3P is 4-5 years old now. German engineering sucks.
I think it's because the i4 sits on a modified ICE platform, as opposed a dedicated electric platform - like the Model 3 - which would make it substantially lighter.

Tbh the standard 4 series x drive weighs around 1750kg as it is. Also remember the added weight of things like sound deadening material over a model 3. Then you Chuck 2 electric motors and the batteries in the place of the normal ICE drive train. To get that power and range you need a lot of batteries. I honestly think it was due to the body kit. In previous videos even in damp conditions the Tesla has done like a 11.8 or a 11.7
Eh
Yeah. I am not sure about that body kit either. On the other hand we know the Model 3 stops delivering power as speed increases.
Still suprised how everyone has glossed over the curved infotainment and instrument cluster of the BMW i cars. ITts by far the best looking of any other cars out there.
I think its ugly so "it's by far" not. At least to me.
True, like a Curved OLED colorful screen. Very stylish !
Hi Mat, I do remember the Tesla could do 11.8 so could have won in the right "original" setup? It seems all the modifications done have been worsening the car?🙂
It can also just be that the track is a bit damper on this filming day and thus you loose some speed at the start.
Yeah it seem fishy there is a ton of evidence in videos all over people getting lower numbers
@@makabelion Tesla got a SW "upgrade" to add stability control at the end of 2021. This test may be the result of the cars now being legal!! Also Teslas turned the power off the front motor after 5 seconds. If they continue to use it for more than five seconds, they'd burn up. The front motor is of the induction type where 10-15% of the power delivered is converted to heat. If you watch the Bjorn video of him launch testing you'll see the F power parameter on the scan tool go to zero at 5 seconds after launch. The BMW has two PM motors that burn all the time.
th-cam.com/video/LEWxBGYz-rA/w-d-xo.html
@@twotone3871 I could not find anything about an upgrade for the stability control? Could therefore also not find any evidence that this was needed to make them legal OR that it hurted performance in any way. Would appreciate if you could give us a source?
Then your claim that Tesla is turning off the front motor because they will "burn out", again was not able to find anything about that? I mean, all motors have watercooling, you know that right? You present your "claim" as a fact by referring to an acceleration video of Bjorn. In that video you see the power of the front engine going to zero as soon as acceleration is stopped. But this is actually very normal behavior. Its more efficient to drive on one engine so as soon as accelleration stops and there is only the need to keep the speed constant so one motor will not get any power. The beauty of it is that the front induction engine does not create drag when not powered (where all other PM do when not powered)
Please tell me you did not fabricate this overheating story because (and only because) you saw the Fpower go to zero and simply did not understand the reason behind it?
Last thing; You mentioned that the BMW (last sentence) has two PM motors, but thats not true, they don't have permanent magnets at all. Thats the whole reason they use brushes in their motors, these are wear parts and need service where PM motors do not.
Motortrend wrote an article about them, some quotes:
"BMW is betting that modern materials and sealing technology will allow modern-day brushes and commutators to last for a reasonable service interval in the life of a modern EV."
"And like your brake pads, the brushes and commutator generate dust and wear out, requiring periodic replacement, which are some of the reasons these are not currently used in any modern EVs or hybrids."
"The biggest takeaway from this is that brushless motors are preferred over brushed because they do away with the maintenance and dust that come with brushes rubbing a wearing surface (the commutator), both of which increase the lifespan of the motor. Disadvantages are higher initial cost and more complicated motor speed controllers that typically require three Hall-effect sensors to properly measure the positioning of the stator and rotor (although some modern controllers have found clever ways to do without these sensors)."

Induction motors are10-14% less efficient than PM motors are that 10-15% is burned as heat - watch the F stator temp go up.
BMWs I4s do have PM motors. Brushless motors have been around a very long time and pre-dates EVs.
The reason why Tesla Model 3s lose in longer races is that the front motor drops out. This is why the 60mph race came in. Teslas burn the front motors for 5 secs then turn off the front motor.
Similar planning is going on in Germany as well.
"It’s always been our ambition to open the Supercharger network to Non-Tesla EVs, and by doing so, encourage more drivers to go electric. This move directly supports our mission to accelerate the world’s transition to sustainable energy."

Depends on where you are. In Germany (and most of Europe?), there is enough infrastructure available to everybody.
That doesn't really make a difference tho, if you can charge at home.
I have an EV for 1 year now, and I never used a public charger.
You managed to find the slowest Tesla M3P to date. It’s consistent 11.7-11.8 1/4 mile

Happy new year to all my car wow peeps. Hoping for more splendid videos this year.
Electric is cleaner, yes, but I hope they can continue making ICEs and find an alternative cleaner fuel source and let people choose what car they want rather than 'forcing' us all to drive electric.
Interesting you got 12s when you usually get 11.7s on the Model 3 performance.
its all that extra drag.
The weather (wind) could be the reason. It is hard to have the same weather condition all the time ai think. When Model 3 Performance will get 11.7, BMW should 11.6.
Body kit didn't look that good, I thought.
