  • BMW i4 is an electric BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe. If you were to put the ICE version next to the electric one, you’d have to look hard to spot any major difference, maybe except for the fact that one of them doesn’t have a tailpipe. The only other real difference is the ground clearance. The ordinary 4 Series has 14 cm, and the i4 12.5. And due to its mostly closed grille the i4 has slightly lower drag coefficient.
    The BMW i4 M50 has 544 hp, and 795 Nm of torque. The electric coupe should accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.9 seconds in Sport Boost mode. This is when the Launch Control feature is activated. If you were to decelerate from around 200 km.h, the car will recuperate at almost 200 kW.

      Thanks. I started on another channel (Marek Drives), which was both in English and in Polish. That one has 240k subscribers. I managed to separate my English videos to this new channel, because having two language versions one one channel didn't do well with the YT algorithm these days.
      So slowly, but I'll get this channel to grow as well, hopefully.

    These new electric cars are reminiscent from old times Luna Park electric bumper cars. Those worked if you inserted a token :).

    It seems like a nice car, Marek, but will it have the usual BMW reliability problems? The indicators on most BMWs fail early on and the owners never get them fixed. The speedometers are notoriously pessimistic so many owners drive them (unintentionally, I am sure) over the speed limit, even in busy traffic. The fog lights are legendary for not working in fog. This seems to affect silver/gray BMWs in particular. This can add an exciting element of Russian roulette to motorway driving in the UK and other countries too perhaps. The company should really fix these problems.

    Bravo Marek, you definitely delivered! That comment vs X6 about driving fun is unusually daring, as usual from you. I think the car is a good leap fwd, but still a more advanced stage 1 EV era than the beginning of Stage 2. When 400km range with 80% of the charge will be reliably on offer any day in the year, then it will be the choice. This w/o mentions on charging infrastructure. Still 3 years to wait am afraid.

    I just test drove this car 2 weeks ago. Neck breaking acceleration but honestly, it's not needed. I think the i4 40 would be a much better choice and you will get more range and save 12k or more on the price.
    The rear seats are kind of tight, but if you are looking at either a Model 3 or this, I'd take this everyday of the week. Thanks for the review Marek!

    Great review, Marek! I do have a bit of an argument though - in the beginning you showed the EU table with energy percentages from different sources, which was a nice touch, but it's lacking context. There is an ongoing myth that an EV is only as clean as the energy you're charging it with. I say a myth, because it's not entirely true and this is the context I think is missing here. I've written an article about it in DriveTribe (which is now gone), explaining the exact science and quoting a credible, long-term study, which may provide you with that context for your future EV videos. Hit me up if you're interested, my socials are listed in my profile, I'd send you the PDF 😊

    I agree with your conclusion. What a confusing proposal. I would add that the energy consumption is quite high. It seems BMW is still searching for the right EV format. Unfortunately, they are only focusing on the car, while leaving it to the driver to figure out how to get anywhere. Tesla is helping them by opening up its charging network to other brands.

  • @davesax11
    @davesax11 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Rather than focus on 0 to 60 times, we should compare times through a wet slalom or wet skidpad. On all season tires. EVs today are like personal computers in the 80's. Early adopters should plan on frequent upgrades. The next i4 generation should drop a few hundred kilos in weight. And BMW should offer smaller wheels to improve range.

  • @alliejr
    @alliejr 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The antiquated form factor kills this vehicle. The back seat is cramped because the front of the car is large enough to fit a straight six motor, which is not there. I give Mercedes more credit for something like EQS with wheels pushed to the corners and short dash to axle ratio to maximize human-usable space and utility.

    Interior is good (but let's face it even Peugeots look like this these days, with a slighlty slower infotainment), but the outside is horrendous. Looks like an old 3 series that has been pimped up.

  • @astroplutonium
    @astroplutonium 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    If your main argument is the Tesla network you probably missed the info that Tesla is opening slowly the Tesla network for everyone. Already UK, Holland and Norway have 15% or more of the chargers opened for everyone and within the summer probably all (a glitch in the system showed the plan for that coming soon). BMW M50 is far superior to the Tesla Model 3 or even Model Y. Now that we have an option for a proper car i would not look at Tesla again in Europe... And in those climate conditions you mentioned Tesla works at around 200+ wh/km so i do not see the huge save in consumption either. I think for BMWs first proper family EV it is a great step but it seems to me that you were just nagging on the whole video.

    • @Commentator541
      @Commentator541 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That is actually true. One thing is that BMW went in reverse, and instead of making EVs look more special like i3 and i8, it is making them duller. Why? I do not know.

    • @MarekDrivesENG
      @MarekDrivesENG  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @CosmicMicron yes, I know Tesla is gradually opening its network to other users. However from the point of view of a BMW client I don't give a rat's ass, which network I'm using, as long as my BMW OS8 sat nav plans the trip so I get where I'm going on time.
      As I said in the video, as soon as I find out, why the trip planning process failed, I will address this issue.

    Im just wondering why even make electric cars that are aimed towards the street car segment?
    Make a bmw thats more towards a family or just a average guy like me.
    This car could have been something if they just prioritized the range instead of Motorsport badge..........
    Because in the end its all about the range (for many of us).

    • @MarekDrivesENG
      @MarekDrivesENG  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I don't mind EVs, as long as I can charge them, whenever/wherever I want. I understand the concept of a wallbox at home, but a 544 hp sort-of-GT wants to be driven further. And in Poland there's not enough fast chargers, which makes living with EVs fairly difficult. I've seen what it can be like in Germany, and over there it was a matter of stopping a bit more often, than in a petrol car, but I can live with that.

      It is just hype. Sit in one, then sit in a proper car and the difference will be immediately apparent. It will be even more apparent when autonomous driving comes along, and you have the time to see how horrible your car's interior fit and finish is.
