Mercedes' new EQE 500 seems to be a great little brother to the EQS on paper with some excellent range, an "improved" design, and a smooth ride, will Alex be impressed by this newest EV entry or is its price tag too much to overcome

The "underestimated" range is due to different range testing (EPA vs WLTP) regulations in north america. Here in Germany the range of the EQE500 you have there is listed with 608km (WLTP), not 418 as in Canada.

Actually it's a little bit complicated. Except of Audi and Tesla... they don't manage to get their EPA ranges and are underperforming

what we really need in all these over hyped car reviews is a detailed inspection of all the user level maintenance items like having to change the batteries, lights, ac filters, tires, fluids, or reprograming the key fobs or just getting access to an error code and see just how badly each model is screwing its potential buyers over bs practices meant to push owners back to the dealerships.

    • @rustler08

Reprogramming FOBs has never been a user level maintenance item. Also, what lights are you talking about? It's 2023, these lights are all LED (both interior and exterior). And wtf did you mention tires? You're not replacing your tires, a shop is (I know this because you wouldn't have asked it if you knew). Your question makes non sense, this isn't a Bugatti Veyron.
Error codes are all accessed via OBDII, and they showed you how to replace the wiper fluid.

Hey Alex, can you describe the brake pedal problem you seem to have a bit more? I drove the EQS myself for over 1300 miles and cant really follow you on this topic.
The brake gets harder to push (kinda like preloaded) under different conditions i.e. driving very close to cars in front of you, oncoming stop signs, red traffic lights etc. Wich is a good thing for safety reasons. I also find it really enjoyable and easy to use as it is very predictable and saves your foot a lot of work (your foot doesn’t have to travel that far down). For me it’s one step closer to self driving, especially combined with the excellent distronic and lane centering.
Maybe you have to get used to it before you love it?

i second the ID4. good friend of mine's parents have one. he's retired USAF and they drive all over the US now. car does great, charges quick, they have absolutely zero complaints, and have never owned an EV prior. they went from stuff like big Tahoes and sedans to this. i just checked a couple of them out at my local vw shop. 41k for an entry level model, about 50k for one with some nice trim options. that's pretty cheap compared to a lot of its competition. also RUMOR the EV1 is in crash and safety testing for the US market. if it passes, it should be launching with a base of 27k, making it the cheapest 4 passenger EV in the states for the upcoming model years

ID4 is so boring to drive. I am generally traveling alone and that too office commutes or shopping but spending 50k on a car and i still wouldn't get the fun to drive element then what's the point in ownership.

@@chadultrapromax1735 It's exactly as much fun to drive as any other EV-SUV in that size bracket and since it's an EV it's still a lot more fun than any similar ICE-SUV. So I don't really get your point after having driven loads of different EVs in the last year.

Great review, Alex, but would you please try to remember to stop calling it the "Gas Pedal" in an electric car. Please use the generic terms, "Throttle", or "Accelerator", since these cars don't use gas, or as we say in Australia, "Petrol".

Honestly capacitive buttons on the steering wheel are almost a dealbreaker - if they work well and are thought through, it's not great, but I could get used to them. But if you can't even perform basic functions like next song or play/pause, it's extremely annoying.
Or like in the VW iD.4, where next/previous are the wrong way around imho. Up is next and down is previous song, while volume is on left and right....why VW???

The second time he yelled at the car to shut up ... is the moment I bought a different car. The assumption that manufacturers make, that I want the car to listen and respond to me, without offering the option to completely shut the feature off.
Its a car ... not Siri ... and at least I can turn her off.

I just went from a 2020 e-series wagon to the 2022. The newer interiors are a notable downgrade from the older ones. The capacitatve buttons just suck. Require way too much precision. It's super frustrating to feel the click, but not activate the function you're clicking. The steering wheel on my old wagon kicked ass. The new one, which is the same that this review shows, is just bad.

Does the winter tire affect range in any way?

    • @Gift0r

Winter tires are usually slimmer than summer tires because they shall sink into dense snow. This gives a better range because they have less friction on asphalt.
