And considering Nissan's experience with the Leaf, I'd have good expectations for the Ariya.
If you're 2-3 years away then wait 2-3 years because the battery tech changes every 5 or so, and when the old ones go out of use they become extremely expensive to replace, which you will be required to do unless you're the kind of 'environmentalist' who purchases a new car every 5 years.
It'd be nice to have an EV brand comparison once every few years, like a compilation of the EV reviews comparing how refined their UI's are, what flaws they have compared to the competition, basically what makes the different brands stand apart from each other besides just looks. Imo there's basically 3 types of EV's right now, the Tesla's, the high end sports cars that cost way too much for most people, then everything else cause they all just seem to fail at what should be simple things.
Something always loved about the catfish camero is that there was no noise or buffeting when driving with the windows down. You hair wouldn’t get blown funny or anything and it was so nice.
I enjoy car reviews on Short Circuit, but I have a small complaint today. Alex mentioned that the lane centering is not as good as in the Mercedes EQS or BMW, but what does that actually mean? Can you provide any data that would demonstrate a difference in lane centering between these cars on comparable roads? I understand it's very opinion-based, but I would like to know why one car (especially a more expensive one) would stay in its lane better than another. Are there differences in sensors? In software? What are the specific numbers? What are the key distinctions?
Gonna be honest, I absolutely love the look of this car. If EVs were like 20-25% cheaper I think I'd go for this for my next car, after my current Hyundai Accent hatchback

I'm 6'4 and own this car in the all-wheel drive limited version and yes the roof is close to my head but I don't hit. I think it just depends on how tall your actual torso is more than your height. I actually love how I fit in the car especially because it's so long I can stretch out even with my son's car seat behind the driver side.
I'm 6'4 and love mine. You just have to try it out. It really depends on the length of your torso more than your overall height. My legs are a bit longer I guess. You can drop down the seat pretty good though either way and then if you need to just tilt the back a bit like he says in this video. The amount of legroom in the car is incredible and that is a huge advantage for tall people like me or you.
Nice content as always. I'm quite interested to see the "cheap" EV, because I think it's where you see the most compromises and how well it can be addressed by the manufacturers.
I think I still prefer the Ioniq 5 as I love a good hatchback but this is a good car from the looks. I REALLY want you guys to give a look at the Maverick hybrid. It's a truck so Alex's review of it will tell me a lot.

I traded in my EV6 for this and enjoy it way more than I ever enjoyed the EV6. The handling is far more refined and I love the ride. The one big thing I do hate is the silver trim around the infotainment reflects onto the windshield as a bright stripe. Sadly it's hard to vinyl wrap because the glass on the infotainment covers the matte silver trim. That and the US model currently has a graphical bug in the birds' eye camera. It has a black box around the white stock car photo which looks crappy, furthermore the camera button being on the far right is an odd choice.
@@EileenTheCr0w sorry for the late reply. I got a solid trade deal for it and came out as if all I did was pay taxes again to start over. (Like a penalty free lease.)
Wouldn't covering the back tires and somehow shielding the front tires lower the drag coefficient even more? The rims definitely look pretty but I'm sure people would appreciate increased range even more than wheel aesthetics. I would also add an option to cover the roof and bonnet with solar panels, it would not give unlimited range but it would give some free range every day, at least enough to cover most people's daily commute to and from work, it would be great to never have to visit a charging station during a regular work week. I do appreciate that it's mostly buttons rather than putting everything in the screen so you have to look away from the road to change things, it could do with more recycled plastic though.
A 100W solar panel at an unachievable 100% efficiency for 8 hours a day would give you just over 5 miles a day in the Ioniq 6. It's just not worth it at this point. Add 20 pounds of equipment to a car, and factor in the solar panels would be locked at a flat angle AND it's not always sunny, and its even less worth it. A lot of consumers don't even park in direct sunlight to begin with. Might as well focus on efficiency improvements of the systems they have already. Covering the wheels does work but air curtain aerodynamic wizardry does most of that and people like the look more of exposed wheels. In a practical sense, having 20 inch wheels is worse than a 18-17", yet that's what people want and buy. The 1st gen Honda Insight did not sell very well, even though it was a fuel efficiency marvel.
All you can do is try it. I'm 6'4 and bought one, I love the car. The roofline is pretty low but it really depends on how tall your torso is. I have longer legs and you can really stretch out in this car. I have the seat dropped all the way down and lean back just a bit and it's perfect for me, it's really an amazing car.
We are already at the spot where if you can afford a new car, you can afford a decent EV, look at the recent Tesla price cuts for example, model 3 is really good value already
2:03 Like the other E-GMP platform vehicles, max DC fast charge speed is 233kW on an appropriate 350kW fast charger. 3:19 Roughly the same size frunk as the AWD EV6 and HI5; enough for your 110V granny charger, Tesla Adapter, V2L adapter, small first aid kit, and a 12V battery booster pack. 7:25 Using Auto Regen level 3 lets you use the radar and cameras to come to a stop via regenerative braking in traffic, or you can hold the left paddle to give you max regen at any time. Still absolutely love my EV6 GT-Line after 2 months and 6000km on Vancouver Island.
Alex, (and Andy) I really like your car reviews. They're informative in a way that other car reviews aren't, especially the Audio System portion. Could you please expand the Audio System review part with more subjective and objective information? It's woefully underserved in other car reviews. I also like how you relate the acceleration in "everyday use" terms rather than using 0-to-60 numbers. Another request, could you do a series of "living with a BEV" with tips since BEVs are a completely different beast when it comes to "fueling up" compared to ICEVs? And other BEV related challenge videos, for example, a "week of charging only using "free" level 2 chargers supplied by retailers"? Keep up the great work.
All the cars! Maybe some hybrids? I appreciate the mid/cheaper cars because I might actually get one eventually. But the super fancy ones are cool too.
It really looks like a modern take on the Saab 900, I wouldn't have know about the Saab 900 but my teacher in elementary school had two and I really loved looking at it. Weird that not more people are seeing the likeness or maybe it's just me.
I've always wondered. How do you get this style of charging port door open when it gets iced in the winter? Most doors have little bump outs where you can pry them open, this has nothing. Just pound on it and hope it frees up? That puny motor certainly isn't going to bust it open. Maybe they'll install hair dryers at the charging stations...
I’ve driven my og ionic for 4 years now. If you want to decelerate on turns hit the regen paddle. I use that like a gear shifter. If I want to slow down paddle down. The less regen the more it coasts.
Really loving this from Hyundai. I went from a Hyundai Sonata to a Tesla M3P. I still love the design language that Hyundai is going with. I would be very tempted by an N variant, but would need Hyundai to fix some non-starters for me. Namely, one pedal braking not being a default setting? So one of the best things about an electric car? Super easy fix in software IMO. Then Carplay and Android Auto being required to be plugged in? Requiring plugging in on say an Elantra might be okay, but not on a car that could cost 60K USD. Everything else though is very well thought out!
What I love about Hyundai is that there's different designs for basically every car. Unlike most of the brands where their roster is just basically the same car a bit resized with different badges
And it's bad driving behavior to think about "seeing a gap and going for it". If you don't have time to safely indicate and merge slowly and carefully, you didn't have enough space. I'm a paramedic and that kind of driving mentality is absolutely the reason I get cut off constantly. I know it seems nitpickey, but these are unsafe habits and trends in vehicle design and consumer use that there's no reason we shouldn't be discouraging.
As a mechanic and overall car enthusiast I would LOVE if you guys started getting under the car and talking about the suspension and drivetrains. Like you mentioned this car is AWD but I believe said single rear motor, id like to see how that setup works. I’m sure there’s some legal/insurance stuff related to having a vehicle lift and walking under cars though.
In my experience if you can push the BASS through the doors - is better. A lot better. Its great actually. But its tricky to do - fitting 10’’ in a door is a challenge - usually there is not enought space in the door, and you need to fortify the door, the vibrations from 10’’ subs will rattle your door and panels, and you don’t want that. The reason why a bass thrue the door is better is the following: 1) you eliminate the problem of Time correction for the sub (front speakers are about 1 to 1.5 meters away from you, if you put sub in the trunk, thats more than twice the distance - so signal from front speakers will reach you faster than the low end of the sub - you have to correct for that, otherwise you will get moody sound (due to interferences between 2 sound sources) and bass coming from the rear. (In a proper stereo - nothing is coming from the rear! You should hear the stage in front of you! Spaning from right to left pillar, and voice* should be comming from the center of the windshield. Bass guitars and bass drums should also come thru the center) Thats ideal) *=unless purposely mixed NOT to be at the center, thats rare. 2) sound stage - again you want everything up front - if you put sub in the back - you won’t have that. But lets say you have processor, and can adjust the Time correction of the sub - in my experience - that never worked as i wanted - i still can hear the sub from the back. My solution was placing sub in passenger foot well. But that has its own problems. 3) bass fro(m the doors sound better - that one is MY subjective opinion - turns out that my front speakers (Dyn Audio Esotec 3 342 i think - 3 way system) are capable of pushing almost the same amount of bass vs my 10’’ front subwoofer (focal utopia). AND the doors transmit vibration more, so what happens is - when i listen to say clasic rock - not much bass there - the speakers can handle that, i don’t need the sub. But if I listed to say Die Antwoord - Rats Rule (extremely low end song) - the 10’’ sub chokes - it makes almost no sound at frequencies below 30hz. The doors CAN’T play that frequency good either - but you get the vibration transmitted to the leg. - bottom line - i get more ‘apparent’ bass thrue the speakers. ‘Try blending them you might say - Let the sub and the doors play to the lowest note they can!’’- it does not work that way 🙂 - if door speakers and the sub run together, even with TCR - i loose the bass. I have to invert the phase of sub to get back the bass. And its not perfect either - its certainly stronger at some frequencies, but worse in others. Bottom line - more speakers playing in unison - the more problems you get. The only redeeming quality for the sub, is at the end of the day it DOES sound cleaner for the most part (when playing by itself, up to 80hz) But i would trade the front sub for bigger speakers in the doors. (I had a plant of putting 10’’ in the doors, but …well maybe in the future). Problem is - DIY is expensive, and becoming more and more inconvenient, and chances that you will get a good sound are slim - you really have to know what you are doing, and read read read and read material. Then trials. Then measurements - for that at least you need a dedicated calibrated mic… Car manufacturers potentialy have all the tools to make great sound in any car - but i believe most don’t bother, and or fall for marketing (we offer you 17 speaker system! (Why??? What you do with 17 speakers??? How do you even EQ them???? Or do you turn them ON/OFF - only that can somehow make sense - ‘you preffer tweeters on the dash? - here you go” “ prefer tweeters in the pillar? We got you covered!”.). As well as - the placement - i dont belive there is much say from the audio guys where to put the speakers in a car. I think cars come as is - and audio companies have to figure out how to make it sound descent. I, if i was a car manufacturer , would do the following - biggest mid-woofers you can get in the doors, mid range speakers - also in the door, say just above the woofers, tweeters Idealy should also go somewhere next to the other speakers but thats a compromise (the driver will probably obstruct the tweeter, passenger will not hear it) so lest compromise and put them on the dash. Add middle channel (i never did, it has its own trade offs, but its better if you want all occupants to enjoy somewhat correct stage). Thats it. MAYBE add a sub sub for..well extreme low end content. But you would want 12” sub for that. And put it up front in the dash as well if possible - why not. Thats it. 6 channel class-D power amp (offcores i preffer hybrid Tube-Transistor amp like PHAZE audio Buttler amp, but thats unreasonable for most people) with processor for fine tuning .In that setup processor tuning will be minimal.
Even with cars where it isn't a talking point I often have problems not hitting the roof, so I guess it's just for the best to not start dreaming about this one!

If you're 2-3 years away then wait 2-3 years because the battery tech changes every 5 or so, and when the old ones go out of use they become extremely expensive to replace, which you will be required to do unless you're the kind of 'environmentalist' who purchases a new car every 5 years.
Hyundai killing it once again! Honestly looking to be my next car in 5 years lol
yeah theyre going to be the ones to watch i think. several of their models have already impressed
Good luck with the constant repair costs.

I actually don’t mind the sticker label. Sure, it doesn’t shine like the genuine article made of metal. But it helps with aerodynamics.
Saying it helps with aerodynamics is like saying taking a dump before getting in helps with efficiency.
@@tim3172 Remember kids, always de-badge your cars!
I was just looking up this car and then BAM ShortCircuit put up a video. LOVE IT. Thank you for your content. I love watching you guys!
You hair wouldn’t get blown funny or anything and it was so nice.
love how the IONIQ 5 looks more, but if this had a fastback I'd consider it too
I love that you guys don't give 2 craps about it raining. Gives the video so much more character!
The surrounding environment is so beautiful in this vid. Rain, nature, fog/mist. Nice setting.
In Europe, you can chose between the mirror cameras or normal mirrors
Gonna be honest, I absolutely love the look of this car. If EVs were like 20-25% cheaper I think I'd go for this for my next car, after my current Hyundai Accent hatchback
I know you are still a bit new to reviewing electric cars.
Peak DC charging power is around 230 kW, not 350 kW 😉
yeah it's misleading, you need the 350kW charger to reach peak speed. I have seen someone post 241 kW charge speed in the Ioniq 6.
Shout out to the camera person and the color graders. This miserable day, and you made it look good. Gorgeous background helped, but even so, great job.
The Ionic 5 looked great, too, but this is like they completely redesigned it for coupe size. Hope they keep this streak up!
Coupe?
from what I understand they will do something completely different with every new Ionic
@@WhatisaLee Hyundai's website states "electric sedan featuring coupe styling"
@@maxm611 Marketing aside, it's definitely not a coupe size... Nothing against the Ioniq 6; it actually hides its size better than most cars and handsomely at that, but in general, cars are too big these days. It's ironic given the industry's movement toward sustainable platforms. I'd like cars to go back to sub 3000lb weights but alas.
@@WhatisaLee Coupe doesn't really mean anything, it's mostly a marketing term based around the general design language. There's no legal definition for it
Alex is the reason I started digging into the connection between Ireland and Newfoundland. When he says "arse" he could be a born and bred Irish man.
I'd love to see a big review of hybrid cars as I am thinking of the latest Toyota Camry for myself. I'm a big boy at 6'4" so it's hard to know what works lol, but I always appreciate Alex getting into the comfort for taller people
Hi EV Fan Girls..
Because a EV wieghs more than a ICE car..
Car Transporters can carry less cars.. so you need More Co2 Blurting Trucks to transport them around the Country..
And the Same with this car.. As all, ship, car shipping transporters have a weight limit, to be efficient..
Guess what you idiots..you need more Ships..
EV Is the biggest lie on Earth..
As a person who is 6’3” or more I appreciate you letting me know I won’t fit.
Keep up the great reviews Alex
I'm 6'4 and love mine. You just have to try it out. It really depends on the length of your torso more than your overall height. My legs are a bit longer I guess. You can drop down the seat pretty good though either way and then if you need to just tilt the back a bit like he says in this video. The amount of legroom in the car is incredible and that is a huge advantage for tall people like me or you.
As an irish person everytime Alex says arse it catches me of guard.. not in a bad way at all. just catches me.
2:09 Has anyone noticed, that for battery capacity it said:
"77 kW Battery Per Hour" - got a bit confused there
yeah. should be "77kWh Battery Capacity" or something
Also tire thickness.
When the laptop your watching on gets a random shout out in the middle of an EV review!
It's been a pretty good laptop so far too!
If I had the money, I'd be getting this one. The design of the 6 is so nice!
Truly one of the most ugly cars available right now
Nice content as always.
The Ioniq 5 is way too close to a crossover SUV for my liking
Such great stuff! Are we sure this isn’t a car channel? Seems beyond comfortable
At 1:40 there's no miles conversion. I'd like to see both kilometers and miles represented more consistently please. Some times I see both and other times I only see one of them. I just want to make sure everyone gets their units haha
Just count them bro

I've been so excited for this to be reviewed by the team. Woo!
That's a wild trade
@@EileenTheCr0w sorry for the late reply. I got a solid trade deal for it and came out as if all I did was pay taxes again to start over. (Like a penalty free lease.)
Watching Alex review cars is just a nice spot to be.
We've got an Ioniq 6 on backorder, arriving within the next month! Super happy about this video 👌
The aesthetics of this car has made me follow it very close even tho im broke af to get it
EDIT: i'm 6'3 so fuck me
All you can do is try it. I'm 6'4 and bought one, I love the car. The roofline is pretty low but it really depends on how tall your torso is. I have longer legs and you can really stretch out in this car. I have the seat dropped all the way down and lean back just a bit and it's perfect for me, it's really an amazing car.
Even though I'll probably never be able to afford an EV, I really like watching these videos and learning about the new tech in the industry. Thanks!
One day bud
We are already at the spot where if you can afford a new car, you can afford a decent EV, look at the recent Tesla price cuts for example, model 3 is really good value already
@@frameshade Yeah, but then you have to drive a Model 3. At that point buy a half decent hybrid and have a car that doesn't make you suicidal.
Both the EQS and Lucid Air have a drag coefficient of 0.2
Yeah i was also really confused about that.
1:28 you can tell LMG is still new to car content "20 inches tyre thickness"
I'll take hard matte plastic center console over piano black ANY DAY, ANY TIME!! Thank goodness piano black is on its way out!!!
I get the Saab look too, though unlike Saab, this doesn't quite look right in my opinion.
I do not think that "20 inches" describes the "tire thickness".
I’ve driven my og ionic for 4 years now. If you want to decelerate on turns hit the regen paddle. I use that like a gear shifter. If I want to slow down paddle down. The less regen the more it coasts.
2:03 "77kW Battery Per Hour"
At what point are the editors going to learn that it's kWh?
Really loving this from Hyundai. I went from a Hyundai Sonata to a Tesla M3P. I still love the design language that Hyundai is going with. I would be very tempted by an N variant, but would need Hyundai to fix some non-starters for me. Namely, one pedal braking not being a default setting? So one of the best things about an electric car? Super easy fix in software IMO. Then Carplay and Android Auto being required to be plugged in? Requiring plugging in on say an Elantra might be okay, but not on a car that could cost 60K USD. Everything else though is very well thought out!
my 2022 forte has wireless andriod auto... i wonder if it has something to do with the larger screens?
Graphic says 77 kW per hour battery 🤔
What I love about Hyundai is that there's different designs for basically every car. Unlike most of the brands where their roster is just basically the same car a bit resized with different badges
The back of it kinda looks like a Porsche
And it's bad driving behavior to think about "seeing a gap and going for it". If you don't have time to safely indicate and merge slowly and carefully, you didn't have enough space. I'm a paramedic and that kind of driving mentality is absolutely the reason I get cut off constantly. I know it seems nitpickey, but these are unsafe habits and trends in vehicle design and consumer use that there's no reason we shouldn't be discouraging.
FIRST!
Thank you mum and dad for an internet connection.
Thsi looks so sick in and outside and the fact that in the EU we get cameras instead of mirrors is so cool

AWD means one motor in the front and one in the back.
I would really love if you would take your time to explore the options of the board system and generally a bit more software view on those new cars
Love that it's absolutely pissing rain in this video haha

In my experience if you can push the BASS through the doors - is better. A lot better. Its great actually. But its tricky to do - fitting 10’’ in a door is a challenge - usually there is not enought space in the door, and you need to fortify the door, the vibrations from 10’’ subs will rattle your door and panels, and you don’t want that.
The reason why a bass thrue the door is better is the following:
1) you eliminate the problem of Time correction for the sub (front speakers are about 1 to 1.5 meters away from you, if you put sub in the trunk, thats more than twice the distance - so signal from front speakers will reach you faster than the low end of the sub - you have to correct for that, otherwise you will get moody sound (due to interferences between 2 sound sources) and bass coming from the rear.
Then measurements - for that at least you need a dedicated calibrated mic…
Car manufacturers potentialy have all the tools to make great sound in any car - but i believe most don’t bother, and or fall for marketing (we offer you 17 speaker system!

Hyundai is basically in to capture as much of the EV market as possible. No nonsense, just what you actually want in a long distance cruiser. Very fast charging, great range, buttons for the essentials and looks cool without completely breaking the bank.
"buttons for the essentials" thats just a standard kia/hyundai steering wheel, pretty much the same in all there cars, and its great!
I just picked up my Model Y Performance a few weeks ago. I had been looking at the Kia EV6 GT, but after Tesla dropped the price on top of qualifying for the tax credits, there was no contest. The EV6 had a much nicer interior, but it also got 100 miles less per charge and cost almost 25k more after rebate.
Though, if someone were absolutely dead set on not buying a Tesla, Hyundain/Kia would certainly be my first suggestion.
