I live in Japan, and some of the body kits and ideas that people are having for this new generation prius are INSANE. It actually looks cool, and gives me early 2000s tuner vibes
I also live in Japan, and when I see these all I can think is "complete rip-off of Ferrari headlights" with some other body stylings blatently stolen from other cars.

I worked for Toyota for a short time (two and half years) and I can say I use to hate the prius line up at the start. But as they came out with different models. I slowly started to like them and honestly I wouldn't mind picking up a new Prime model.
As someone who has never worked for Toyota, I completely agree.
But really, the Prius's used to look like slow, round pieces of crap that I wouldn't touch with a 3 inch (massive btw) pole, but man do I like this car, looks aside, the features included in this car is a cut above the rest, and the price (at least here in Australia) I'm sure will be very competitive with other vehicles aiming for the same market. Definitely considering this as the family "quick run to the shops, or drive to the city where we don't need much space for luggage/shopping etc" not that it doesn't have plenty of space, but that's what an oversized SUV is for.

I hated them too but with this model it looks great so either I'm getting old or the new one just looks that much better.
I have the 2023 non prime Prius and it’s amazing. I consistently get around 56 mpg and have only had to fuel up once in 900 miles so far. This thing is awesome!

I disagree with Alex, the two completely separate displays are a godsend. Two main reasons: 1. entertainment options don't affect the dash options as they're not integrated and 2. 10 years down the line when that touch screen bs is made redundant a third party replacement won't affect any other features of the car. It's something Japan does well in their regular cars, keeping climate, entertainment and dash SEPARATE
Respectfully disagree - 👎 - Japan does NOT do this on most of their cars - Toyota or Lexus. It's being phased out.

@@Mario12342010 Yeah that guy doesn't know what he's talking about. Especially Toyotas. The whole point of buying a Toyota is keeping it for as long as possible. I had my Corolla for 10 years exactly. And my Mom had her Toyota Pickup from the 90's for 20 years.
@ewatfred, I think you missed Alex's point. They can be separate, but the implementation in this case is horrible. The abbreviations and ugly af layout make the other screen almost worse than removing all those controls altogether. 😂

I've been seeing them everywhere in Japan. The first time I saw one, I knew immediately it was a Prius. It's funny how they managed to make it look substantially different, but also recognizable. Not gonna lie, it looks badass haha

That wasn't the issue, it's that it wasn't even in the Toyota settings on the main display there. Had to be done on the dash/HUD screen behind the wheel with way less convenient controls

I am fairly certant that the safety controlls not being in the infotainment is kinda a safety thing so passengers don't mess with the safety settings for example, and also the fact that 10 - 15 years down the line someone might deside to swap their head unit, so if safety settings were in there, gg, you can't swap head unit. Also just having them right in front of you is very nice as you don't get as distracted while driving if you need to change something.
Nice to see some more affordable cars featured on the menu. I'd like to see some more of that sprinkled in between all the more premium cars.
$30,000 for yet another computerized piece of plastic crap. I would say it’ll be a good time to be a mechanic, but it won’t, because the schematics are all proprietary so without overlord Toyota’s blessing we won’t be allowed to touch this thing…
Edit: I found the words, it’ll be a good time to be a Toyota dealership’s senior mechanic. I mean you’ll hate your life, but you’ll probably make a lot of overtime…

The prior toyota prius were taxi cab reliable, don't see why this wouldn't be. The electronics seem to hold up fine. Everything is going to break on a long enough time line.
@@richr161 Being one of the most reliable vehicles today is basically a participation trophy. The electronics do hold up fine… just long enough for the warrant to expire, then they start magically breaking.
I have nothing against electric vehicles, I don’t care what makes the car go. What I don’t like is planned obsolescence, which is worse than ever before with EVs. Beyond planned obsolescence, you can’t even get the parts to repair these vehicles and even beyond that it won’t matter if you can get the parts because you can’t make them work without the manufacturer’s software.
The day someone makes an EV which is almost entirely mechanical, I’ll be happy to buy it. But that’s not gonna happen because reliable and user-serviceable vehicles don’t make the manufacturers as much money as their rolling computers with proprietary software.

Sales figures don’t lie. All the prius models tanked in sales post 2012. It would’ve been dumb to keep making them only for them to not sell. It’s the reason most car models get discontinued.
Clearly something was broken if people weren’t buying them. New one seems to have fixed things by actually making it desirable.

@@alanmay7929 automaker don’t fix whats not broken and will sell the same model for years if not decades as long as it sells. The most recent example is think of dodge challengers and chargers. Virtually unchanged for well over a decade. There’s many other models sold virtually unchanged for a decade or more at time.
I agree, I feel the V is slightly better for that reason, but still not enough, it would be nice if they made a larger Hybrid Van.
They could use the drag to give it some stability that is lacking with the narrow tires of the Prius. Although crosswinds with a van may call for wider tires, or as I advocate, fins.🎉
Disagree on the segment about the safety settings. I'm glad that a) it's hard to change things and b) it's NOT on the infotainment screen. Infotainment should ALWAYS be kept separate from driver assistance features, and I'm glad that Toyota realizes this. Sure, it's a lot of menus and submenus to dig through, but it also educates you better on how those safety features actually work (and ensures you won't accidentally turn things on or off).

@@Kurial94 I wasn't even thinking about that. I was more thinking about the fact that changing things related to driver safety should not require you to use a screen or button/knob/dial in a way that makes you LESS safe as a driver.
The controls are ON the steering wheel, and the menu is on the left hand side but INSIDE the circumference of the steering wheel. So your eyes are naturally drawn to where you are on the road, and more importantly, inline with your steering wheel - instead of to the right of the steering wheel when you look back up from the infotainment. When your eyes drift your hands drift too.
It's called target fixation and it leads to crashes even with trained racing drivers.

@@Yay295 I'm not. But some people will. Making it quite difficult might even slowly goad them into not changing settings while driving, which is a sneaky, underhanded way of making "bad" UI that forces you to be a safer driver. No matter what, I like it.
Utilizing both screens doesn't mean that you're opening it up to the passenger. As long as the controls stay in the driver's hands, there's no reason why it can't better utilize the screens to simplify management of the car settings.
Though I will say, the small screen size isn't the fundamental problem here. Toyota's interface is. I have a 2014 Camaro with a much smaller dash screen, and yet somehow the settings are a billion times easier to manage.
One of the nice things from going to an '04 to a '23 (Toyota Rav4 to a Subaru Outback) like I had to do recently ("had" to) is that everything feels like a space-age upgrade. He mentions being surprised that dual-climate isn't an option and to me, that's so new and exciting I didn't know it was a pedestrian inclusion.
Still though, it's cool to see what's going on in cars. I don't know that I'm the target audience for a Prime, but it sure is neat to look at.
A larger Prius V with this powertrain, design, and awd would be AMAZING

One more merit to the smaller rims is the bigger tire sidewalls will make your ride more comfortable.
We've got an older Prius, and wanted to love the 2023 Prius Prime, but it's just soooo much smaller. Now we're stuck looking at the Toyota Rav-4 Prime. I'd love it if you could review that, too.
Go for it. I love my RAV4 Prime. The very hard to get XSE Premium Package has everything do-dad you might want, but the more available and affordable regular XSE has the modern essentials. And that EV range of 50 to 55 miles in the spring, summer and fall and 42 to 48 in the winter handles 80 to 90 percent of my normal weekly driving. With a level 2 charger, the car is fully replenished in 2 to 4 hours depending on which charger your model has (pre 23 models have a 3.3 charger except for the XSEPP and all Canadian cars; all 23 cars have the faster 6.6 charger). And when your destination is farther away? Then the RAV4 Prime is a solidly efficient and reliable Toyota hybrid.

Looks like this is the only plug-in hybrid alternative to my Chevy Volt right now. With my 42 mile round trip to work right now this is tighter than I'd like but otherwise I'm relying on gas more or going full electric.
Just go full electric. Get rid of all the maintenance associated with gas engines.
Yeah, I was looking at the Volt right before used car prices went nuts. Toyota really knocked it out of the park with this new Prius. I NEVER thought I'd even consider buying one.
I actually DRIVE my car so a hybrid is the only way to go.

Its almost a good thing to use your gas engine a little bit each day. Mechanical things last longer when they are used, sitting is not healthy to them. I had a friend park his running car when the transmission broke, it wouldnt move, but the engine was perfectly fine. After 10 months when he finally got a transmission, he went to put it in and realized his motor was having issues now. Moisture had set in, among other things. If your engine is run every day long enough to get warmed up, it should last a lot longer than if you are driving around with it off at all times. I bought my Subaru when it was 6 years old with 180k miles. It ran and still runs great at 230k because it was well maintained and driven a lot of highway miles, which kept it lubricated and moving without too much stress. I had a friend who didnt take care of his car, beat on it, let it sit for weeks at a time, and he blew the engine on his arguably more reliable Honda at 175k.

We ended up with a 2021 Prius Prime for a rental now for over a month (Actual car is waiting for a warranty part). Before I got in the car at the rental place, I laughed like "Oh GREAT a Prius (Facepalm here)" ....BUT I feel like Alex does here, I was shocked. The model we have at the moment has 3 driving modes, Eco, Normal and Power. Let me tell ya, when you flip to power and hit the gas, DAMN JACKIE SHE GOES. I haven't charged it at all, but can confirm that gas milage isn't bad at all compared to our actual car (2018 Nissan Kicks). Love the review Alex!!!

Sadly if you take a golf or anything this size and add all the add ons from ac, seats, gps and so on you far exceed 40k. Unless you stick with just a wheel and the minimum specs.

2:05 Even the regular non-V Prius had decent cargo room before this new design. Between the changes in height and other things they kinda nerfed some of the Prius' versatility. It's ridiculous what I can manage to squeeze into mine, seats up or seats down.
Edit: The height in the rear seats was much better in the older one too. Just saw the signature Prius shifter is also gone. Kind of wish they would've left the Prius to be the quirky functional car and made a decent lower, cooler EV instead of making this the Prius.

I call mine a cargo prius. Had a 2010, and now a 2017. Awesome cargo room. Camping is awesome. Woodworking is awesome. You can almost fit a full piece of plywood, hahahahaha

The Prius being a lift back I expect significantly larger cargo capacity than what is on display, my Ford Mondeo was utterly cavernous compared to this.
as an owner of a 2023 prius awd limited (not a prime), i love this car. I have an old 2012 prius that i still use daily and drive the new one when i am not covered in junk from work. this car is a blast to drive over the older one. coming from the 2012 model i know you had complaints about tire and engine noise from it but man it is leaps and bounds over the old car, the setting when you have a real profile that doesnt make it default the safeties back to stock works that you do not need to reset the FCTA every time. glad this car is getting some press on many different channels hell even ludwig got to talk about how nice it was.
I am upgrading from a 2012 to 2023 also. Glad to see the positive feedback. Can't wait for mine to deliver, and see what I can get hyper-miling it.
@@Mac2099 you can probably get in the 65 to 70 MPG range if you're hypermiling. I have a non-prime as well and I get 60-65 in city driving just driving it normally
@Mac2099 I get a constant 50 mpg, but I really do not try to hyper mile it at all. I just drive how I want to. 50 mpg is the rated, but I like to over take more on the interstate, and on ramps are really fun in it. The handling on the car is great. Another thing mine came with toyo tires not the Michelins
I actually got the base prius this year. Will agree there's basically zero wind noise even hitting 85mph. The main noise you hear is the tire noise as there doesn't seem to really be any insulation from the wheels. I can tell the car would be nearly silent with that one change. Though I will say the air vent is either nearly worthless or obnoxiously loud. One thing you guys also didn't note is you can't use adaptive cruise control in B mode.
I only have the base prius though as the prime wasn't out and didn't want low profile tires. Main losses to me is the over head 360 camera view when parking and vented seating. It's a shame they weren't possible on the base model, but that's just how the car industry works.
But I can say economy is great drove a straight shot from my home state to Georgia at 75mph nearly the full way and got around 53mpg.
How does it look so much better than the EQS costing like 1/4 of it ....
I have a 2020 prime and while I'm very satisfied with it, and there's no one big thing in this new model that I need...theres a lot of small thing. A lotta lot of small thing.
Same and the price tag on this just makes no sense. The 2020 was 3K cheaper and they had a deal going at the time where they reduced the price by another 2-4K in some areas and that was before any of the incentive programs.

It’s also fair to note that due to the efficiency of the small motor and less energy being used to gather large amounts of materials for a large battery pack this is one of the most green cars on the market. Even more green than full EV

This is verifiably false. Depending on your driving profile you're still burning a lot of CO2 while also carrying around a battery + engine which also cause CO2 when produced. If you look at any study focusing on hybrid vs. BEV you'll see the BEV wins after around 50-80.000km even in the oldest studies.
On some of the newer Lexus/Toyota models with this new infotainment system, the safety settings are actually all in the infotainment screen and others with this same infotainment are still in the gauge cluster screen. I think it just has to do with what kind of electrical/wiring system the car has

For anyone curious, a CVT is a continuously variable transmission and is the type of transmission that usually comes in a hybrid type vehicle.
Specifically this has an ECVT.
Of which, toyota has had pretty good luck with as far as im aware, nissans... not nearly as much.
A CVT is what most compact and mid-sized vehicles are using these days for automatic transmissions, even if they sometimes call it something else. I'm not a huge fan, but I believe Toyota's CVT's are quite reliable. It's mostly Nissan CVTs you want to avoid like the plague. They've been using them for many, many years now, but they're still pretty terrible.
yeah the problems with those Transmission if you live in country that have uphills are pretty bad because sometimes goes blank without torque to move (Toyota have a Recall for update ECU to help) also Toyota don't Repair it only replace it since those e-CVT don't have a TIS repair overhaul only replace for refurbished e-CVT assembly. which is ok when you have warranty 60 months/60,000 miles but without warranty those transmission aren't cheap. We're talking like $4k ++
Toyota eCVT is "just" two electric motors and planetary gears. More reliable than most of normal transmissions. 😎

12:12 Sadly they would likely never add sound deadening to a car like the Prius because it would add so much weight which would lower the gas mileage and somewhat fight the original “green” angle which the Prius goes for
Instead of weight, the real reason might be that they want to keep Lexus as the one with lower noise.

@@zippydastrange Japan has a whole class of cars which are 660cc and often turbocharged which can achieve 4.5L/100km or 52mpg, on top of that if you were to say, service your car annually, it won't start burning oil in a decade!
That being said, there are Prius models in Australia like, 1st and 2nd gen models, which still have under 4000 engine hours clocked on their motors. One of the oldest, lowest mile ones I've seen is a 2001, which has done ~430,000kms but sub 3000 engine hours.
Prius’s have traditionally been very quite for their class and size.
@@zippydastrange 1. I'm from South Australia 2. I drive a kei car myself, gets 450kms to a 25L tank. Best little car, doing the melbourne trip soon. 3. Mate of mine has a 2nd Gen Prius now about to crack 400,000 kms, 2nd battery pack, same engine and trans, drives out to the mines and back in it cos it can go around 1,000kms on a single tank.

Uhh if you watch the car enthusiast end of youtube you’re pretty dead wrong. Every middle aged dad and their brother wants one. I get a lot of longing looks of I want one when I’m next to other older prius’s. The 6 month plus waiting list for one doesn’t lie.

I still don't understand why people like infotainment systems. I get the need for them (too many features for everything to be on buttons) but they're inefficient and a pain to use.
If anybody likes these systems, it's because of the novelty. Flashing lights and cool animations. But novelty wears thin.
All automakers need to do is create an interface for Carplay/AA, but they insist on folding all other functions into their screens. Why? Because it's cheaper to implement a screen and update software than design and manufacture a proper, usable interface with buttons and knobs from the get-go. And it's all at the expense of user experience.
Granted, Toyota isn't the worst offender. For example, current Mercs are awash with screens with little consideration for the driver that actually uses the thing.
The one in my new corolla is pretty good. It handles the radio or other audio well, with an interface that's intuitive for me to use, and also gives me access to the navigation pretty easily. And if I plug in my phone, it gets out of the way and lets android auto take over. Basically, it's there when I need it, and not intrusive when I don't.
I love the normal aspects of that car, good to see.
On another note, do you think you guys might consider doing more environmentally friendly content? Stuff like high-tech bikes, or the tech in public transit, that kind of thing. I'd love to see you guys do some sort of collaboration with Translink, especially now that the Skytrain is coming to Langley!
it looks like they took design cues from the modern corolla sedans, which are a very nice looking car. theyve done a great job on the looks of this, and the quality of the vehicle is probably going to be traditional toyota, really solid
Maybe I'm jaded, but I just really hate the direction modern cars have moved into visually. I don't think it'll age well like a lot of designs from the early 2000s.

i think they really thought of the average user of one of these things... uber and taxi drivers! The door handles, the power lift gate and a lot of the other features makes it ideal for them and tbh it sounds like a really good car for anyone! If you're not driving chances are you're going to be in the back of one of these at some point.
One bit of feedback id like to offer is that i really do like the labs data analysis, im glad you're putting that money and data to good use but all the audio graphs felt a little bit out of place and went on for a bit too long, perhaps there is a way to either shorten them and let those who really want to see the fine details pause the video or find a way to integrate them in a more stylised way that doesnt look like it was taken straight out of some scientific instrument. They interrupt the flow of an otherwise beautifully and concisely shot video. Honestly these reviews give top gear a run for their money! Great work!

I suppose the Prius I have has changed me a little bit because I do really like it now, from my previous ford focus, which had a sporty feel on the interior. When I first got the Prius I remember thinking that the Focus was much more comfortable for long drives because the steering wheel’s axis was more horizontal and therefore it was easy to keep the steering “fixed” with just a single hand resting at the bottom of the wheel, and the seats were more reclined and the whole position felt lower and less upright than the Prius.
The Focus was I think a little too confidence inspiring for a first car, particularly with the brakes. Many people as passengers I think would probably have described my braking as reckless, but the brakes were so good it gave a very large margin of forgiveness. I didn’t have a lot of people in and out of my car but the braking habits did scare a friend I had as a passenger that he even spoke up and said “woah man, pump the brakes!” 😂
Yes, the Prius is the perfect first car for a person. It inspires responsible driving.
It seems however that Toyota has moved away from this concept for the Prius, here with the new model, but that’s okay. It’s so recognized as a safe boring option, it says a lot about the people who drive them, and I suppose Toyota wants to honor these people with an improved image for the vehicle, which is perfectly understandable.

@@tinncana valid consideration for a buyer, not for the maker. I would love to see the drivetrain and accesories in many vehicles, but it might not be viable to manufacture them
Love my 2020 Corolla hatchback but this looks pretty damn cool.
The important stuff is there. I just upgraded from a 2020 to a 2023 corolla touring sport (the stationcar version), and a lot of it is there. The dashboard is way better than it looks like in the Prius, and the screen is smaller but similar in quality and software. The engine also got upgraded from 122 to 140 horsepower in the 1.8 liter version, so it's faster, but also more quiet while driving.

9:56 ah the Tesla Model 3! MSRP of Prius Prime around $8k below the Model 3. Pretty compelling if one can get at that price except dealership markups.
Not enough to tempt me away from my 2017 Volt... I have more EV range, more powerful motors that never require the gas engine in EV mode, and similar adaptive cruise functionality. I'm waiting for a PHEV with the features my Volt has, but with a heat pump, 60+ miles of range, and AWD.
I got a 23 Outlander PHEV to complement my Volt. Try one out you’ll like it.

The complaint about andriod auto is also quite present in my 2017 fusion sport which uses ford's sync 3 system.
One of my friends has the previous gen Prime. She comes from a family of petrol heads (SAABs and Mazda RX7) and says it is a great car running on battery and just an OK car on petrol. Here in the states, the dealers are adding up to $8K added dealer markup for a new Prime, plus mandatary options. I bought a Tesla.

@@avalagum7957 I live in central PA. Neither of the local dealers could give me a delivery date or final price on a Prius Prime or RAV4 Prime. Everyone I know who has a Prime bought their's at Koons Westminster Toyota in MD. It looks like they still have dealer markup, but not as much as when I was looking back this spring.
There's a lot of features that seem more sporty than necessary, and I love it. I know Toyota would never put a manual in one of these things, but we can dream, right?
A manual in a hybrid car is adding loads of complexity for absolutely no reason

I also disagree with alex about having the safety features in the drivers display. I don't think that a young child would understand what safety features they are enabling or disabling. And if the parent wasnt in the car like they're pumping fuel that could lead to a bad scenario. I do agree that having to change the settings for the front cross sensors is annoying. Maybe they can patch it in software where the pre set drivers settings like the drivers phone when paired the car recognizes it and sets the drivers preferred settings and saves it locally.

(I'd say towing capacity on modern .*EV-cars are like 3.5mm jacks on smartphones; if you don't use it you wonder why people care, but if you use it then it's absence is a deal-breaker)

While this new Prius looks nice, I think the package is absolutely stupid for its market. This is targeted at families and as an Uber/Taxi, but for both it has massive problems:
1. The headroom in the back is way too little to accommodate tall teenagers or grown ups.
2. The door handles might be cool, but strangers won't understand them. That's a huge problems for Ubers picking up passengers at a busy road.
3. The boot space is tiny compared to its predecessor. It won't even fit a checked suitcase plus a carry-on.
I honestly think this has been one of those form over function mistakes. They wanted to get rid of the boring Prius vibe, but in the process created something that doesn't fit its customers.
Problem they had was that suiting those customer's needs was by definition not cool, so by making it flashier and dashier they gave up those customers, but you still won't buy it because you don't want to be the guy with a prius, and 1 generation won't change that.
BMW had 1 generation of cars a decade ago that had terribly designed and hard to use turn signals to the point of most people choosing not to use them, but the "BMW no turn signal" stigma is still there to this day many years and generations later.
Toyota isn’t really going after that market anymore because Prius sales have been in decline. I think the change in styling and performance increase is to target a new audience of people that probably wouldn’t have considered a Prius in the past.

The size he talks about is the size of the rim, not the wheel. The wheel is the same size, the difference is the tire is smaller when the rim gets bigger.
@@xp8969 No, the wheel is the metal part. The rim is the part of the wheel that the tire attaches to via the flange.
Go to a shop and ask about buying wheels. They won't ask you what tire you want as tires are not included.

In the states if you use it for short commutes (work, kid's school and friends, grocery and bar) you can get 133 mpg. just don't crack the windshield. That is the same size glass that is in minivans!!!
To my knowledge, the bar on the middle of the roof is part of their "roll cage" so if you flip, it wont cave in. From what u remember it is a "feature" of the XSE toyota models, or at least they highlight it lol
