And I used to drive my old 71 Plymouth on rough fire roads to go camping 🏕 and just carried a shovel....and the other 95 percent of the time drove it to work
the only think I don’t like is that your choice of replacement tires may be extremely limited for the first few years and getting suitable winter tires may be a problem too.
Who designed/makes the 3.4TT engine? Someone said that Yamaha supplies this engine to Toyota and I was quite skeptical (even though apparently Yamaha *has* in fact designed and built some Toyota engines, including the V10 in the LFA.)
@Niles-Guy I don't think it was an ignorant statement. Yes 15 MPG is not good, not really any different than other vehicles in its class. It has the aerodynamics of a brick and full time 4 WD is a waste of gas. This vehicle in Canada starts just below $100k and quickly goes up from there. If you can afford that, then how efficient it is doesn't really matter. Maybe next time state your case instead of calling someone ignorant.
@@TheCJUN No my feeling is it will get a similar or possibly the same Hybrid powertrain that is in the Land Cruiser. The i-Force Max Hybrid, a 2.4L turbocharged 4-cylinder engine with a 48 horsepower electric motor. It has an 8-speed automatic transmission and a combined 326 horsepower and 465 lb-ft of torque
Terrific and fun review as usual! I would really appreciate your comments on comfort. My wife and I are in our 70s, and we currently have a 2022 RX450hl. As you know, the 3rd row is a joke and completely useless. It is just the 2 of us, so we were appreciative of the extra cargo space. The car is very comfortable, smooth and quiet. My biggest issue is that, the sloping sleekness that makes it so beautiful, limits my ability to easily enter the passenger side (when my wife drives) without scrunching down to avoid hitting my head. This is uncomfortable to do, and I am only 5' 9". I see the GX as a much easier vehicle to enter, but comfort is most important. My wife has numerous back issues and arthritis, so it is extremely important that the ride and seats be soft and comfortable. With all that being said ( sorry for being so wordy), will we be disappointed in the comfort as opposed to our RX? Thanks as always! Bill
This was a fantastic review. Love watching your reviews. We owned a 2008 Lexus GX and it was a tank. The fuel economy was abysmal - which is why we ultimately let it go. This new GX looks amazing and could get us back in a Lexus.
Thanks so much for another great review! Any idea if the upcoming hybrid will include a 3 row option? And, any idea why Land Cruiser doesn’t have a 3 row option?
Just wonder if the interior without wood and classier looks will turn off long time Lexus buyers. My Ex had 3 in a row due to classy highbrow interior and reliability! This looks like they are changing their target market but when you do if you miss you will lose big!
One would want to wait the first year to avoid dealer markups. The Land Cruiser first edition is being marked up by Toyota dealers in my area by 10K to 15K USD. Which brings the price close to a GX550 Luxury.
I think Zach is right, Lexus should sell tons of these. Several trims to choose from, so if you just want a nice mall crawler or a capable off roader, there's a version for you. The Overtrail trim also has electric sway bar disconnect and I believe all models have locking diff options as well so certainly options for the person who wanted something trail capable. A couple of things regarding the engine. While some may miss the 4.6L V8, this new engine is the essentially the same with 2 cylinders chopped off to make a 3.4L V6 and the twin turbochargers will add a mountain of torque down low and a bit of top end. While the engine is shared with the Tundra, the turbochargers are slightly different. They are slightly smaller and tuned for more immediate torque response. The fuel economy isn't amazing, but it's never really about the size of the engine, it's about the power. If you are requesting 350HP from your engine (by flooring it), you are going to burn an amount of fuel required to produce 350HP, whether you have a 2.0L Turbo 4 cylinder, 3.4L turbo V6 or a regular V8 engine. For example, our previous Sorento with the 2.0L Turbo 4 cylinder used about 13l/100 kms in the city. Our current Forester Wilderness with a 2.5L 4 cylinder (non-turbo) uses about 10l/100 kms in the city. The engine in the Subaru is 25% larger, but it uses almost 25% less fuel. The difference being the power, the Subaru has about 180HP and the Kia had 240HP. You are burning a lot more fuel to get the extra power. Turbocharged small displacement engines will rarely (if ever) actually give you "better fuel economy" (at least the way we are given them). It's marketing hype. If they were smaller displacement, lower powered engines, then yes. But then people complain about the "lack of power" (like they often do since Subaru dropped the turbo engine option in the Forester). A future hybrid option will likely improve the fuel economy numbers if that is something important to you.
@@foxlake6750 I think you mean "8 cylinder it replaced". And yes, it may be. It's also more powerful, meaning it needs more fuel to generate the increased power. To generate more power, you need to burn more fuel. You can either do that with displacement (larger engine) or forced induction. In either case, the increased power increased fuel consumption.
Excellent reviews… you guys make it so much fun to watch you all the time. Keep it up please. I’ve been waiting on this SUV for quite sometime. Why did you compare it to X5 vs X7? Although Luxury + starts at $81k US, I am comparing up X7. Should I look at it differently?
That 2.4" wheelbase bump got wasted, could have been used to reduce the front bumper to axle overhang, big styling miss. It would have helped the offroad angle of attack too. But attractive otherwise. Mpg needs fixing with a PHEV drivetrain, surely in the wings.
My 3 cents (adjusted for inflation)...THANK YOU Lexus for deleting the 3rd row in the Overtrail. That vehicle is meant for overlanding and offroad trails. Probably should up the tire size a notch, but that's what it is. Gear. Not a family bus. If you need a family bus with some offroad capability, you get it in other models. An upper-level trimmed serious overlander is a legit niche. Nice to drive around, but legit. On days it isn't a commuter for a business person, that model is meant for a couple of people, maybe 3-4, to get in and road trip, overland, offroad, camp, etc. Gear without the seats in the way--even if folded. Get 'em out. It would be worth an aftermarket removal. The Overtrail accomplishes that for us...along with a few other things. If I still want a bit more tire, I can deal with that. It probably handles 1" more of radius with 35's. That's good. Wrong trim if you need that third row. This is a scenario where Toyota matched the trim to the correct consumer.
Unlike our American neighbour, GX (and LX) didn't sell exactly well in Canada. Perhaps its because most customers lease their Mercedes, BMW and Audi equivalents. Luxury segment is usually generate from emotion, GX and LX are possibly too sensible for luxury buyers.
