Whoever is designing the recent Toyota trucks, tundra, Tacoma, gx, and landcruiser 250 needs a raise…. This gx is like peak suv….. from design to drivetrain to interior and features is practically perfect
Let’s hope that Toyota recall on the 3.4 V6 doesn’t slide into the GX’s life. I’m concerned as it’s the same engine .. Time will tell, for now I took my name off of the waiting list. Maybe wait for the 2025 to be introduced.
David, really enjoying the content. Keep up the great reviews. The information you provide is second to none and helps us less knowledgeable car enthusiasts.
Thank you David for the detailed review of the GX. For sure, Toyota did an amazing job on brinking the GX to market. I am waiting on your future review of the Land Cruiser 250 which is the one my Toyota dealer will be getting for me.
I've always admired Lexus interior designs. In my view, they showcase the art of Japanese craftsmanship in tactile and sensory. The materials and palette are spot on, and they pay attention to all the details!
Hi David, I’m also an engineer so I enjoy your videos. I have a 2023 GX460 V8 model myself and like it, these vehicles cost a lot of money so if you want to buy one the new V6 turbo is concerning to me since it’s quite complex and very new. I’ve heard of problems with this engine in other Toyota models over the past year so it’s going to take Toyota time to resolve these issues. Personally I would put off this new model till Toyota demonstrates that the engine is reliable otherwise it’s going to be a pain in the behind. It’s always best to give a new design a few years to work out the problems. Personally I’m very interested in how Toyota is going to address these engine problems since several of these engines had to be rebuilt after only 10,000 KM’s.
USA federal agency already put out a recall and Toyota announced their intent to announce a detailed recall by late July 2024. The issue was said to be caused by left over machining debris in the engine during manufacturing process and has said to have been fixed now. The affected models are lx/lc/tundra/sequoia from 2022 to 2023. Both announcements were publicly put out may 30 2024 already
The other reply is pretty spot on. Keep in mind that this Engine was first designed and put in the LS Sedan in 2017, the engine and turbos were tested to go a Million miles, no issues. The GX 550 is not part of the recall because the issue was caught before any 24 GX models were built. Also since the GX is built in Japan, Land Cruiser plant their were less issues with the LX that even came out in 22/23 than any where else and completely corrected to japans Land Cruiser plant and put to spec.. The GX 550 are 24 Models and have no way of having his issue. I have a GX 460 and a new Overtrail and just wow!
@blackdiamondoffthegrid. Bro ! At 26:38 he is driving right past my house in this video. I wish I had known they were going to be here. How frustrating🤣 🤣 I wanna see this thing so bad.
Hello David, I've been following you for some time now and I find your channel informative, very well done and your presentation is brilliant. I see you are also friends with AMD at The Car Care Nut, I think you two are incredible and I love watching your great videos. Thank you David.
tbh that 3rd row view is misleading, since you have the 2nd row not only down, but also pulled up all the way. showing a picture with the 2nd row down and someone of average height in the 3rd row would be more accurate. Love your videos overall though. Can't wait to see your overview of the hybrid once it's available!!
Hi David, Thanks for such a detailed and thoughtful report. I was leaning towards the luxury+ but the 22” tires give me pause due to the road noise/vibration and lack of two-tone paint options. I guess I could always replace the L+ with 20” tires. Does the L+ panoramic sunshade come with an interior blackout cover? Ugh. My ideal (future) trim would be Overtrail+ in Incognito with a third row and the panoramic sunshade. Maybe Lexus will offer this in 2025. Perhaps I just hold on to my 2020 Land Cruiser for another year. Excited to see trim levels at the Chicago Auto Show next week.
I really like the premium feel of the gx550. As a current 4ruuner owner, what worries me is the ekdss. Ive seen a lot of those leaks prematurely and people who have this deleted the whole system. I doubt you can do the same with the 550 as its electronic and throw some codes if you dedided to do so along the way, but its still early to tell so we will see. But damn it looks so good.
I didn’t think you could get the over trail with Captain seats in the second row? Also, it looks like it had a third row which in other videos mentioned you don’t get a third row in the over trail?
Ot and ot+ do not get a third row option at all they are completely removed and their mounting rails, but the interior wheel well bumps keep their cup holders as if the third row was there. It’s odd but makes sense in a business model to make things faster and cheaper for them at the factory
From the hour long test drive I did in the overtrail model, it is quieter than most cars but not silent you can still hear the wind and all season tires a tiny bit which is what you want. But it is light years away from any truck or suv in its class that is body on frame design like this. Especially with this windshield design angle, you are going to hear the wing and tires more than you would in any other suv, but it is quiet enough to take a nap in with out being disturbed at all
David, could I trouble you to convince people the premium or premium plus will be more than adequate for all of their needs? I don’t want to have to fight people for my overtrail! 😅
David, why doesn't the 2nd row on all TGNA PLATFORMS slide for and aft? Also, wasn't there any way to package the battery better? I believe 2nd row room on LX, gx, and LC is the same
I've watched alot of videos on the new GX550 but no one has mentioned whether or not it has an in built trailer brake controller like the Land cruiser 250, did you see one during your test drives?
David, many thanks as always for your detailed, informative and technical engineering based reviews. I currently own a 2022 LX600S, as soon as they release the new GX in Australia. I have my name down for the Overlander, trade or sell it privately. Do you have any information are they planning to release them with V6 and hybrid version combined? Best regards Clive.
Great review. I just wish I could find the Overtrail without a huge mark up. I called my dealer, and they ask $35k above the MSRP price… nuts. I need to look outside of CA.
Lexus announced that there will be a hybrid model, but it will not be plug in. More than likely it will be the same twin turbo inline 4cylnder hybrid that’s in the Toyota Land Cruiser
Would be interested in braking dynamics of over trail with KDSS. I had a 2010 4Runner with the KDSS and the nose dive on heavy braking was kinda scary and comical.
It no longer has kdss it is now ekdss and it is entirely different from what it used to be and only available on the overtrail trims and you can not choose when it activates/connects/disconnects the sway bars it is entirely automatic and driver mode based. Even the way it work and is engineered is entirely different now.
I've been thinking of making the electric jump with the next purchase, but this truck may be the last ICE for me. I could buy and keep it for life. Give the EV's another year or two to mature.
Let's let this video be ANOTHER reminder that we all need to calm down then a company changes a vehicle. Anyone else remember the outrage of going to a V6?😂😂😂
I’m always behind the trends when it comes to what’s new. I am sure it is more improved than the current model but I don’t think I like the styling as much as the current model.
Pretty sure this one will grow on you... the vehicle is far more purposeful, less tied to Lexus traditional Lexus styling cues. I have a GX460, and I would think.of.them differently...but still full of precision build quality.
@@eg4449 I think planned obsolescence is partially true due to business economics. Once the reputation of reliable product has been established the business has to cash in. The build quality for these Lexus will still be Japanese but the increased number of parts(turbo) and reduced quality if materials (polyurethane) will reduce reliability.
Nori Green Pearl is THE color for the 2024 GX I'd get the premium for $64k, and swap out the base wheels for nicer 20s Save you over $15k from the Luxury+ I expect the hybrid to be the TC Hybrid Plug-in, with 404 HP, based on the 3.4 TT V6
Thanks for the review - do you think this would make a good replacement for a Land Rover Discovery 4? I love my Disco 4 and enjoy the similarly chunky, utilitarian looks of the GX - particularly the Overtrail.
If you don’t need the third row this is far superior to the disco in pretty much every way I have both and off road both and both are stock configuration. The gx out does the disco in every way other than forging depth ability from my personal experience. And the disco has a bit more luxury leather compare to the Lexus engineered leather.
@@samuelgatton thanks for sharing your experience, I appreciate it! How does the legroom situation compare? I’ve noticed in a few “body on frame” designs that the legroom - particularly the depth of the footwells in the rear - seems to be very shallow and restricted compared to the Disco 4? How is the GX? We’re in Australia and the drive times are often quite long, so legroom is important to us.
@@joelsmith9311 disco wins hands down in rear leg room but I would say the rear seats in the gx are more comfortable overall. Unlike previous gx models, the second row does not slide backward, so it’s not as good as it could have been sadly, but I’m a 6 foot tall (182.88 cm) 255lbs (115.66kg) an even with the driver seat moved all the way back fit and can move and seat comfortably, but can’t stretch out and have to readjust every so often to stay comfortable much like you would in a ford escape or ford explorer vehicle. The disco I feel I can stretch out a little bit more being my height and weight. (though it is still restricted in both disco and gx compare to say captains chairs in the lx or minivan leg room size). Hope this helps with some comparison
The one big thing I did forget to mention when it comes to disco vs gx550 is the fact that in and off road the rover suspension is superior because it is air ride suspension equipped. That being said it is fully adjustable for high clearance when off roading vs lower for driver and passenger entry and road/highway driving too so that it is better for aero gas mileage and higher speeds. However, the Toyota did an absolutely amazing job with their dynamic suspension coils in the new gx550, but they will never be as efficient at adjusting the entire body and frame height like an air suspension is
Usually Lexus are built in a more precise tolerance than a Toyota and they usually use more sound deadening and in some instances thicker sheet metal. Also better and usually a bit thicker paint. I was working at quality control in Lexus manufacturing
David, my salesperson told me the vehicle was going to start being built February 1, 2024. Now this has changed and cannot provide a date nor a reason for the delay. I put a deposit down in June. Do you know why there is a delay. Also - is the Overtrail the only two row vehicle? What is happening with toyota parts in Japan - is that causing delay? Thanks.
I'm very interested in the 550 GX Overtrail, but I'm concerned that it needs premium fuel. On my ranch we have regular gas and we're a long way from town. Will the engine be damaged by using regular gas?
No you can use regular fuel. The vehicle will produce less power and will be a bit less efficient, but there is no damage to the engine using regular fuel.
Thank you for your response, David. I recall in the past with cars that required premium where we were using regular that we'd hear "pinging" or pre-ignition from the engine. I'd always assumed that this would have caused damage to the engine. Is this assumption incorrect?@@AutomotivePress
David: Thanks so much for this educated response! I'm a strong Toyota fan and now drive my 4th 4Runner and my wife drives her 2nd LS 430. Their reliability is unbeatable! My wife's LS 430 is 23 years old with 180K miles and purrs like a kitten, and my 4Runner is 10 years old and going strong. I don't need a new ride to replace the 4Runner, but darn, this 550 GX is really nice!!@@AutomotivePress
Yes and it will void any warranty too. It requires premium gas because it is considered a high compression ratio engine. Without it you will get engine knock
You now David.... I really love how in depth your discussions are and how much detail you cover but good lord I also hate you because I can't afford$106k CAD for the Overtrail haha crying :(
Yes it's more modern and up to date but from the videos and pictures so far it seems like the older gx 460 may feel from premium from inside. That wood trim steering wheel, premium knobs and plush seats with better color options inside.
Hi David. Watched your review here and the live event with Kirk. There’s a reason that your viewers overlap. You both come across smart, knowledgeable, genuine and non gimmicky. Love that. It seems like you both are not that overly impressed with the new GX. Sounded like the turbo lag and overall driving experience was not exciting for either of you. The limited interior options colours and functionality is disappointing. Flipping but not sliding second row seats, mildly useful third row, lack of shortcut buttons for frequently used functions like massaging seats and other settings, are some of the under designed elements that standout. I think after so much wait and anticipation, you and all of us expected to be blown away. Perhaps the capability of this vehicle is yet to be documented. Maybe reliability numbers years from now will be lifting this car’s value. However, the launch appears to have fallen short? Do you feel underwhelmed? This vehicle seems like a first generation of the new movement. Do you feel like Lexus will be making significant changes over the next few years to catch up to our expectations? Is it worth the price? Seems like the LC250 may be the one to buy but harder to get.

@@Pilotsf Modern engines have sensors that allow for automatic adjustments and therefore there will be no pings or damages to the engine
Given it uses turbo, will this last as long as a gx460?
Highly doubtful. It will be reliable but not as reliable as the v8 over the long haul.
any wood trim interior?
There are some black wood trims but only tiny bit...
What about Land Cruiser?
That’s a hit
only car i would ever want
Overtrail drives better bc Lexus omitted the KDSS out of the non overtrail trims which are standard on all trims of the outgoing model.
I would prefer 18 or 19 inch tires
You now David.... I really love how in depth your discussions are and how much detail you cover but good lord I also hate you because I can't afford$106k CAD for the Overtrail haha crying :(
Yes it's more modern and up to date but from the videos and pictures so far it seems like the older gx 460 may feel from premium from inside. That wood trim steering wheel, premium knobs and plush seats with better color options inside.
Did they get rid of the rear hvac ceiling vents? Looks like the 2nd row seats no longer fold flat.
In the overtrail trims, yes, otherwise in all luxury and premium models the overhead hvac is roof mounted across all back seats

Hows compare to lx600?
It's surprisingly similar in feel.
35k to 40k less than LX
I think, they need to refresh the LX ASAP.
This GX is too close or even better than the current version of the LX and much better value.
I loved you in the movie rush hour.
