the GX will be able to take an aftermarket lift ( which 100% of opel that will off road this will do ) so it will have higher ground clearance AND ride nice while at that height...unlike an air suspension system at the highest setting that rides like welded suspension from the lack of travel by being at the limit of the travel all the way up.
Nice review. I was planning on getting a Land Cruiser but the mark up has begun. I can’t see paying near Lexus price and not getting a Lexus. That said, my local deal said they won’t mark up the G X. If that’s the case then I am definitely grabbing this guy.
4 runner Limited. dual zone AC/heating, individually controlled heated/cooled front seats, roll down rear hatch window, moon roof, locking center Dif, full time 4 wheel drive, 20 inch tires, A Track, premium sound system, 6 cylinder (proven to be super reliable) engine. I think I'll stay with the Limited 4 runner. Does everything I need an SUV to do............
unlike the British competition; this one got a real locking center diff. and if you ever parked inclined near a cliff, you want a real center locking diff... in my region we have the 300 series land cruiser and the '24 70 series land cruiser and I am choosing the GX550 over both!
I dont get why Roman is bashing the vehicle for the solid rear axle. This is exactly what everyone wants to see. Smaller than full size segment SUVs with off-road ability. Solid rear allows for much cheaper and better off-roading aftermarket currently.
Dumping my 4 runner for new GX!!! 😊😊😊 great video enjoying this coverage and Roman and general conversations with the son is nice as well. camera work outside shots is great!!🎉🎉
if i had the money to replace/upgrade from my 2014 4Runner... 1. this GX Overtrail... 2. an LC200 Heritage model 3. a newer 4Runner TRD Pro... that's it...that's the list.
20:21 Tommy - I really thought you were going to see how the extra width affects the ease of parking! I was so excited because, at least where I am in CA, the vehicles keep getting wider and the parking spots keep staying the same! One of the many reasons I love my ‘22 GX.
I will stick with what I said in Ryans video from a couple days prior about this thing, it is interesting, but not worth trading in my 4R TRD OR. But if you are for some reason cross shopping between this and the new 4R, I might consider this over the new 4R. Would have to do a deeper review when the new 4R comes out.
This video shows the overt plus model, with more options, so the price is very high On the Lexus configurator, I was able to price the Overtrail with some essential options for $72,000
Yeah, that’s a serious issue and it’s just one example of Toyota screwing around with the options on this new GX - the other is the E-KDSS, as it’s available on the Overtrail line only - the old GX had KDSS standard across the lineup and that helped body roll significantly, particularly on road, as with it you can use thicker sway bars to help the ride quality. Same with the ML sound system - this was available at much lower price points on the old GX.
I have to agree with Roman.. most people aren’t taking this vehicle over landing or through difficult offroad situations. I think the new Land Cruiser is going to be a better platform for overlanding.
These reviews on all the new Toyota/Lexus vehicles have been great. Will be very excited when they are not so "directed" by Toyota themselves, which them choosing the location, trail, etc.
I like this a lot. However, I wish Toyota would put their reliability behind an old-school offroader. Body on frame, solid axles, NA V6, with a V8 option for extra $$$, locking diffs, and manual disconnecting swaybar. They might put the Wrangler out of business...
In hope your future videos preface the Defender woes you had in its/your early videos; stranded for tires, etc. I’m glad you run the production wheels, etc.
Loved seeing y'all out in my old stomping ground in the Sonoran Desert! A nice truck I'll never be able to afford (at least not in this decade). Now get that first-gen Sequoia and run it all over the desert! ;)
Curious how easy it will be to lift the vehicle for better ground clearance. Is the Lexus KDSS system an impediment to doing that? And if so, then to what extent? The KDSS system on the Toyota 4Runner limits the amount of additional lift that can be added.
Ya, my LC200 cost quite a bit more and yes it does go off road and is an amazing Overlander. Since we don’t get a real Land Cruiser here any longer I am looking at the GX550 to add to our fleet. It has its pluses and minuses, but once the aftermarket kicks in, it could be a great off roader. Looked at the Inios Granadier, that’s a complete non starter though🤷♂️. Anyhow, great video and looking forward to you getting to do a real test off road with it.
Have to disagree with Roman. I've seen a lot of 392 Wranglers and a few Bronco Raptors out on the trails. By the time those are built out they have $120K plus in them. There are definitely Lexus fans who are going to be lining up to go exploring in one of these. This is the same crowd that will drop a quarter mil on a 4X Sprinter van and take it out, bend things and scratch the crap out of it. They will pay for what they want.
Unfortunately the reliability argument only makes sense if you are purchasing or financing. When you lease a car that argument doesn’t hold up as well. Lease prices for new gx will be significantly higher than the outgoing model.
I agree on the dash. I would go for the Lexus quality but here in Europe all rich people go for the Defender and use it as a city car. So they'll go for the 20+ inch wheels.
Looks good but there's a lot of front and rear overhang. No way the approach/departure angles will be better than a Defender. At least it will likely be more reliable.
To Tommy’s point, the capabilities of the vehicle are what is important. Not whether buyers will take it off road. And can we get over the fact that everything is more expensive now? State the price, maybe make a comparison or two, and move on. No sense in speaking to us like we’re poor. Lastly, the mileage complaint - it’s got more HP and a ton more torque, and still managed better MPG than the V8. Take things in context, and if MPG is a big concern, there’s always the TX.
I’m 6”4” and fit real comfortably in the Captains Chair of the Defender, especially with a 1.5 suspension lift and BFG 33’s. The rear seats fold flat and have rear locking differentials, it’s a Beast and very comfortable offroad. Me thinks a bit more rugged than the Lexus, especially with the approach and departure angles coupled with a Strong Turbo 7 speed 6 cylinder engine. I bought the 2023 model, waited to get the kinks out .
In terms of competition, Tommy is square on. Despite the Brit appeal of the Defender, total cost of ownership is so much better with the Toyota product. Resale alone makes the Lexus worth it. Would like to see a bit tougher off-roading.
I'd still rather have a Defender 110. You get better approach, departure and breakover angles along with better ground clearance and wading depth. The D110 also has superior ride and handling and puts the spare tire in the right place unlike the GX (which really underlines who Lexus thinks is buying the GX). Cloth sunroof also available on the Defender but not the GX.There's a long list...The GX looks the part mostly and has some off-road chops, but for this kind of money I'm going Defender 110 all day.
@@M1911jln Do you have the data to back that up? People love saying it, but this is a new and very different model than other Land Rovers. Also, our 2007 LR3 that we purchased new has 227,000 trouble free miles on it and has never required a major repair or left us stranded. Of course, we do the maintenance. Many people pick them up second hand, skip the expensive maintenance, and then complain they're unreliable. Anyway, I'll wait on that data.
@@afellowinnewengland6142I wouldn’t bother trying to prove anything to these ppl their only argument is reliability and the fact it’s a unibody and they hyper focus on those 2 things and blast them ridiculously out of proportion, I have a Land Rover myself and I’ve worked on them and I love them, I’d also go for a new defender over the GX, you laid out all the reasons in your previous comment on why it’s a better all round vehicle. A lot of ppl here are still clinging onto the poor experience TFL had with their defenders even though it was new production vehicle and the dealer made some mistakes themselves while fitting things like a winch.
Roman, you are über right. I remember 1st model of Lexus RX on the cover of German car magazine and they were calling it ÜBER AUTO in capital letters. Tommy, it’s called "Licencia Poetica"
Hope Lexus offers dealer installed off road upgrades like a 2” suspension lift, 17” off road rims, 35” tires, steel front and rear bumpers, winch, off road lights, etc.
I think Roman fundamentally misunderstands the last gen GX. It wasn’t a “luxury vehicle” with off road capability tacked on. It was an off-road vehicle with luxury accoutrements tacked on. Kind of like a Land Cruiser, G-Wagen, etc.
$70k - 80k+ is crazy for any car, but comparing apples to apples with Land Rover, Lexus is a way better proposition. As a Lexus owner, my RX450HL has been perfect as far as reliability goes. Land Rover spends more time being repaired than on the road. I want to see how the hybrid performs. I want something that will get at least 25+mpg.
We've really got to move on from using MPG, though I suppose at this point with the mostly electric future, perhaps that ship has sailed. Going from 19 to 21 mpg is a 10.5% increase in mileage. Calculated as gallons per 100 miles it's more apparent as to the improvement: 4.76 g/100 miles vs the V8's 5.26 gallons to go the same distance. That said, this probably more about CAFE standards and fleet averages than something most consumers care about.
I think the GX has the detuned 3.5l TTV6 that is in the Tundra SR (Work truck). The specs sound identical. Hopefully translates into the grade of reliability expected from outgoing 4.6V8 in the 460.
He had mentioned in his review that he was following Roman and Tommy 😂 I'm a little surprised TFL didn't have this video out as soon as the embargo lifted.
I disagree with you about the old V8 on the GX 460. It actually didn't have much low-end torque and as a result the GX 460 was relatively slow off the line. That old V8 was quite smooth, but just wasn't that powerful at the low end. The torque delivery on the 460 is dramatically different from that on the old Gx 470 or from the 5.7 in the 200 Series Land Cruiser. I'm not saying that the 4.6l V8 is a bad engine, just that it isn't the be-all, end-all that some folks seem to be claiming.
Shouldn’t this trim have recovery hooks, rock rail instead of running boards, front bumper that accepts a winch? For the money i would think the people buying this trim would rather have those than the sunroof, high end stereo system etc…
Lexus is targeting this at the mall-crawl crowd that want to be able to do some weekend camping. While 33's are nice, the running boards will keep this thing off trails where a more serious 4WD vehicle is necessary. The aftermarket will tailor to those looking to do a "build" and get more serious around off roading.
Possible to insert dividers in this video and insert a index, organized by your talking points (i.e. off road capabilities, interior, exterior, final thoughts, etc.) and time stamps?

Nice review. I was planning on getting a Land Cruiser but the mark up has begun. I can’t see paying near Lexus price and not getting a Lexus. That said, my local deal said they won’t mark up the G X. If that’s the case then I am definitely grabbing this guy.
4 runner Limited. dual zone AC/heating, individually controlled heated/cooled front seats, roll down rear hatch window, moon roof, locking center Dif,
full time 4 wheel drive, 20 inch tires, A Track, premium sound system, 6 cylinder (proven to be super reliable) engine. I think I'll stay with the Limited
4 runner.
Same
Ryan from Driving Sports was behind you guys 😂. He gave you a shout out.
😊😊😊 great video enjoying this coverage and Roman and general conversations with the son is nice as well. camera work outside shots is great!!🎉🎉
This is the review ive been waiting on.
if i had the money to replace/upgrade from my 2014 4Runner...
1. this GX Overtrail...
2. an LC200 Heritage model
3. a newer 4Runner TRD Pro...
that's it...that's the list.
Tommy and Roman's bickering!😂lol
*excllent review Lexus GX is always the answer ❤*
20:21
Tommy - I really thought you were going to see how the extra width affects the ease of parking! I was so excited because, at least where I am in CA, the vehicles keep getting wider and the parking spots keep staying the same! One of the many reasons I love my ‘22 GX.
I love this truck !!!
The lack of third row is a HUGE miss in my opinion. This would've been my next tow/off roader if it had it.
Base Overtrail well equipped $70.5K .. nice value .. finally a Lexus that has my attention. Woohoo !
This video shows the overt plus model, with more options, so the price is very high
On the Lexus configurator, I was able to price the Overtrail with some essential options for $72,000
Is the Mark Levinson, only available in the Overtrail + and Luxury Trim, worth the 11 grand jump over the base system on the standard Overtrail?
Yeah, that’s a serious issue and it’s just one example of Toyota screwing around with the options on this new GX - the other is the E-KDSS, as it’s available on the Overtrail line only - the old GX had KDSS standard across the lineup and that helped body roll significantly, particularly on road, as with it you can use thicker sway bars to help the ride quality. Same with the ML sound system - this was available at much lower price points on the old GX.
Although quite tame that seemed like a beautiful trail to be driving on for the day.
Great video! I love that this version does not have the third row seat, an arrangement I would never use.
I like this a lot. However, I wish Toyota would put their reliability behind an old-school offroader. Body on frame, solid axles, NA V6, with a V8 option for extra $$$, locking diffs, and manual disconnecting swaybar. They might put the Wrangler out of business...
We need a bobble head version of Roman. His head is REALLY good a showing how rough a trail is. 😂
My question too.
I am more excited for the Land Cruiser 250, even though this is more luxurious and has more power.
I will take the GX over the Defender any day! For heavy off roading will look at the Grenadier.
I can’t wait for the off-road aftermarket!
Unfortunately the reliability argument only makes sense if you are purchasing or financing. When you lease a car that argument doesn’t hold up as well. Lease prices for new gx will be significantly higher than the outgoing model.
"no head bob" 20 seconds in lots of head bob
I’m still on the fence with the long term durability of a TV6 vs the NA V8. I don’t see these getting to 200, 300k with the factory turbo.
I agree on the dash. I would go for the Lexus quality but here in Europe all rich people go for the Defender and use it as a city car. So they'll go for the 20+ inch wheels.
Awesome video as always. Your son is great love the father and son review 👍👍👍do you gentlemen kno if gx 550 will have an hybrid??? Thank you 🙏
Looks good but there's a lot of front and rear overhang. No way the approach/departure angles will be better than a Defender. At least it will likely be more reliable.
From what I’ve seen online it has worse stats all around, you also have to keep in mind the defender has around 3in more ground clearance
Take things in context, and if MPG is a big concern, there’s always the TX.
sooo... if im not planning on offloading this thing, and I just want the plushest ride possible, the overtrail/overtrail+ is still the one to buy?
I’m 6”4” and fit real comfortably in the Captains Chair of the Defender, especially with a 1.5 suspension lift and BFG 33’s. The rear seats fold flat and have rear locking differentials, it’s a Beast and very comfortable offroad. Me thinks a bit more rugged than the Lexus, especially with the approach and departure angles coupled with a Strong Turbo 7 speed 6 cylinder engine. I bought the 2023 model, waited to get the kinks out .
Defender has less articulation than the new GX, even more so with a lift added to the Defender
In terms of competition, Tommy is square on. Despite the Brit appeal of the Defender, total cost of ownership is so much better with the Toyota product. Resale alone makes the Lexus worth it. Would like to see a bit tougher off-roading.
The OVERTRAIL, is perfect for me, sort of glad it doesn’t have 3 rows, they can seat on the floor
The Defender, like every Land Rover vehicle, is horribly unreliable.
YUUUUP!! I’ll take the Lexus reliability over Land Rover by a long shot..
Roman, you are über right. I remember 1st model of Lexus RX on the cover of German car magazine and they were calling it ÜBER AUTO in capital letters. Tommy, it’s called "Licencia Poetica"
I just built mine I'm going to go test drive it ended up being about 72 over trail.
You had me till 80K. Nice review, thanks
21:39, the first time Tommy has ever driven faster than his Dad would have…
Hope Lexus offers dealer installed off road upgrades like a 2” suspension lift, 17” off road rims, 35” tires, steel front and rear bumpers, winch, off road lights, etc.
It's funny watching Ryan following behind you doing his own review...
He had mentioned in his review that he was following Roman and Tommy 😂
I'm a little surprised TFL didn't have this video out as soon as the embargo lifted.
You guys are bummed about the rain we had, but at least you weren’t here during monsoon season. 😅
This vehicle might be my next rig. Really want to see the New 4 runner vs Land Cruiser.
Your dad cracks me up.
thank you thank you thank you for the payload shot!!!
I hope you do a comparison of the Overtrail 550 versus a Land Cruiser 250 series. Right now I consider the Overtrail the new real Land Cruiser.
Can you describe any more details on the massaging seats or your opinion on them? I don’t think I want them but I want the upgraded sound system lol
Do 17" wheels clear the calipers? That is the size people will want to run for wheeling.
How was the road noise in comparison to a Defender ?
I hate 3rd row so glad it's not there ... Give me better storage
Ha. I almost said the same thing. 3rd rows are dumb and typically useless.
Depends on the vehicle. Your comment is dumb.
^This, for sure. I have a third row in my GX and it stays tucked away 100% of the time. I’d love for it…to just not be there.
The legend is back in a way more expensive starting price than we thought. Then again it’s 2024🤣
The embargo ended on February 1! What took so long?
Enjoyed the banter.
Glad you enjoyed it
Shouldn’t this trim have recovery hooks, rock rail instead of running boards, front bumper that accepts a winch? For the money i would think the people buying this trim would rather have those than the sunroof, high end stereo system etc…
Lexus is targeting this at the mall-crawl crowd that want to be able to do some weekend camping. While 33's are nice, the running boards will keep this thing off trails where a more serious 4WD vehicle is necessary. The aftermarket will tailor to those looking to do a "build" and get more serious around off roading.
There are recovery points under the front bumper, rock sliders are an option and you delete the sun roof you save $1100.
Possible to insert dividers in this video and insert a index, organized by your talking points (i.e. off road capabilities, interior, exterior, final thoughts, etc.) and time stamps?
