Let's be real.. fifteen years from now.. while the Defenders will be hitting the crushers.. the GX will still be demanding at least $25k on the used car market
We'll see! Long term reliability on this power train is inconclusive
I dunno... think about this: These cars with screens that have all the features and abilities down to the most basic being tied to them being operational for use. Case in point my WRX has almost everything integrated into that screen, A/C fan, control HVAC blender doors... should that screen go out on me I'm kaput. Now think about 25 years down the line. Do you think these screens will be produced? No. So follow that out, you will be left with a brick of a car because the screens wont be supported. Think I'm joking? Trying buying a first gen screen on a first gen NAV car... go on i dare you. At least those cars had real buttons so you can use them if the screen goes out. Now your hosed man. These cars are a joke.
You mean with inflation it will be the same price they bought it for 😂
Land Rovers are soft roaders, this GX is a proper 4x4......and a Lexus best reliability and LR are considered, at least over here in Europe, worst reliability. You cann't compare both cars.
As long as they are being built in Japan, I would agree with your statement.
I love how TH-cam channels go from “Here’s how this SUV performs on the trail” to “Here’s how this SUV performs for my family of five in this Costco parking lot.” Haha, car reviews!
Wow! A TH-cam professional that is being completely honest! I can't tell you how refreshing that is. Viewers base some of their purchases off the information we get from select channels. Thank you for keeping it real. 😉😇
Kids bring out the highlights and lowlights of cars quite effectively lol
Yes! This 100% please keep this core value Kirk and co! So many channels now clearly suffer from influence.
lol 😂 in 15 years I am guessing that the GX will be very costly 💲💲💲💲💲💲💲💲💲to have still on the road in costly repairs.
Thanks for the honest review I have 4 children and there is no room for a stroller and bearly groceries from sams or Costco. Just saved me money and time going to the dealership.
Dropping two cylinders, adding gears, and keeping mpg the same? I know it’s government mandates but at the expense of reliability is beyond frustrating
Far better car than the Defender.....
In reliability, almost certainly. For space, ride quality, and power, Defender is better.
@@KirkKreifels only reliability counts..... Land Rover, according to almost all UK surveys and disappointed costumers, worst brand and car around.... .
LR Defender is the better lease car...assuming it can be had for less payment than GX finance.
@@KirkKreifels that's the difference these days, cars are developed for a lifespan of 5 or 6 years......businesslease term. Very few brands develop cars with a lifespan in mind of 15, 20 more years. Lexus does Land Rover does not.
My youngtimer, Volvo 760 gle, build to last 30 years. New Volvo's, Chinese build and components, 5 years, according to our local Volvo dealer, not an official Volvo dealer though.
@@KirkKreifelsa piece of shit with great space, ride quality, and power, is still a piece of shit.
honestly dont think too many people will cross shop the defender and GX. i feel like the people who buy each are totally different.
This GX looks amazing. I look forward to buying one off lease in a few years.
New GX is a home run for Lexus from all levels. 👑👑.Excellent rival for the defender and better than the discovery as well. Obviously there will be some haters who will complain .🙄
Just when I had lost hope in my oil stocks, they came out with these monster SUVs.
Thank you. My kids' university funds are now in safe hands. Thank you!
Kirk keeping the fanny pack alive.🤣
Thanks for the review.
Kirk, I Like it when You bring Your Wife along during the Review(s). You sound More like you are having a Discussion with Her, Cassy, Than the Audience 😊😎🇺🇲.
Lexus's relliability is far better than the Defender, meanwhile their interior is for sure great.
reliability over everything. love the new gx550.
Especially for a SUV.
how do you know its reliable? that engine is already having problems
@@juanshaftpatel7488 I have the same motor. Haven't had any issues.
@@blazecarr you are only one person 😂😂
@@blazecarr the old one is bulletproof, I will never trade that for this new one
Bulletproof. Will last forever. Looking forward to the hybrid. Hopefully PHEV soon.
Love the look of this GX and like you said, as an off-road capable option. But for family with 2+ kids, the TX is the one. I spent some time with friends who are having their second kid and got the TX. So spacious and comfortable. I was very impressed.
Its even more spacious than the "full size" (and much more pricy) LX600.
Great video 💯
The frost effects has been out for over 25 years/ electronic window tinting. It only uses mili-voltage electricity to make it clear. Love it 😍
The best TH-camr that creates so good, reliable and practical content about Toyota/Lexus, thanks Kirk!
My pleasure!
Practicality TX, Cool factor GX.
For me, the GX (and Land Cruiser) just needs one thing to knock it out of the park, and it's nothing to do with powertrain. Give us a split tail-gate. I'll take all the other shortcomings.
Yep. I have the 200. I’m god for bid looking at a Range Rover just because they decided to give it attention with the back rest..
Yes at least keep the "clam shell" tailgate or split tailgate. Especially if you know something will fall out upon opening. It's a real truck.
I didn't mind the "refrigerator door" or aka the 5th door on the 460. That could be a pro for the Defender though.
Totally agree!
I just bought an Overtrail plus. As first I couldn’t see the HUD, but I was able to adjust it higher up.
Or maybe you’re just that much taller.
Great review
I believe the Defender is not body-on-frame while this GX is. This GX does look narrow in this video.
A neighbor of mine just got the new tacoma and the valve body just went out. I hope people have better luck with there new Toyotas 🙏🏼.
Beautiful vehicle! I'd be interested if they had an XL version. I really wish Lexus and Toyota made direct competitors to the Suburban and Expedition. The sequoia is still too small in the back. Big families need big cargo spaces. Toyota is leaving money on the table in the segment, as well as with the 250/350 size diesel trucks.
Beyond the super-sized SUV and pickup category, Toyota has many types of vehicles they don't bring to our market.
Exactly! The Suburban is very nice and the higher end trim is comparable to Lexus but Suburban needs a high end competitor in the space category
Buy a bus if you have an entire herd of children
@@JStryker7 It’s obvious you’re trolling, but a nice 3-axle motorhome is an eventual goal, with a more practical 8-seater in the stacker trailer. I’d love that spacious 8-seater to be a Toyota.
@@jdavies hahahaha fair enough
Kirk- making fanny pack great again . I now want one again. I had a ninja turtle one back in the day . Lol
My niece just gave me a Grumpy one for my birthday. Not sure why?
I have a fanny pack. Just got one last year.👍
I'll take a GX over a Defender everyday. The reliability of the Defender doesn't have the best track record.
Superb presentation.
Thank you! Cheers!
I have a '22 Sienna and with kids I think I may stay with the Sienna. Thanks for the family review!
GX is fine for older kids who can buckle themselves. Under 5 years old....it is harder than it needs to be. Sienna is great for families even though it's a tad smaller than previous generation.
Any minivan will have more space than that suv😂😂😂
The only thing the new Sienna needs is a Pano Roof and it would be perfect
Minivans aren't overland trendy yet
@@trdrav4 Get a Mitsubishi Delica?
Put some 17” wheels with some 33” AT’s on it and it will be set. But maybe that’s on the OverTrail model.
I appreciate the running board demo and discussion 👍
I like the Defender interior, but I wan't to buy and I just can't get beyond the difference in reliability and dealership experience between the two.
Great review, I went to see one for myself and its such a great car, almost perfect besides the few issues you've mentioned. One thing though you could review is the ambient light during overcast days or nighttime.
Good review based on family practicality. Thanks!
Keep the reviews coming! It's definitely making the time fly until my order is in. 👍🏾
Love the family review. Been there with the baby. Thanks for the honest opinion
Nice you could open the window before opening the back door. We just cringe and open slowly as a waterfall of groceries pour out.😅
My man with them ORGANICS!
the overtrail should have come with 17" wheels instead of 18"
Had some similar complaints to you, but playing around in one earlier this week I found some nice features you may not have known about.
1. You can adjust the heads up display within a pretty large area on the windshield. It was in a very poor spot by default but I was able to adjust it to an area that felt much better / more natural.
2. If you hit that "button" on the display that looks like 6 squares, it brings up "commonly used features" and I believe you can actual save a few to always be on there / pin them. Massaging seats would be the first thing I would pin because these are the best massaging seats I've experienced in a car.
But still, great review. Thanks for all the info.
Thanks. The HUD was adjusted properly. If I moved it higher it got blurry and more dim.
I don't believe the massage seats can be moved to the frequently used area.
As always, great review!
Love the color and the 22" wheels fit perfectly. My dream car, but will not reach Europe and it will be crazy expensive if it arrives here...
22” wheels are ridiculous and uncomfortable, my opinion. Why buy a comfortable ride and make it uncomfortable to look silly?
How much does AVS truly improve comfort and handling in highway and city driving? and the GX550H will come soon? Thank you.
This looks to be the better buy than QX80? Or are they not direct competitor?
Qx80 is bigger more expensive and more powerful but I bet you'll have some cross shopping . LX is the main rival to qx80
@@KirkKreifels Got it. Thanks. So this is kinda in its own class, below Qx80. What about vs X7?
Five kids? Wow! In all of your experience, what model vehicle (anything sold in US) would best accommodate your whole crew? Thanks!
Any minivan 🚐
No jelly was abused in the making of this video
Great review Kirk!
Third row delete on the OT was smart. Not very useful third row.
It's an occasional third row still
Agreed. It’s to appease those who feel they need it but in reality it works best as a two row. It’s not a huge vehicle by any means.
Defender?😂😂😂this guy is blind😂😂😂
Does this GX or TX (on 20 inch wheels) have a smoother/more comfortable ride quality?
Other GX 550 reviewers have said yes. Don’t get 22” uncomfortable
TX is unibody and will have a smoother ride. Avoid the 22" wheels on both vehicles if you prioritize ride quality.
I can't wait to see the full review too on the TX. Coming from a family of 4 little ones. Previously has a GX460 then traded it up to a LX570. Really wanted to go back to the GX550 however some of the specs didn't knock it out of the park for me...
Where are you filming this? Looks lovely. Some where in Florida?
Great to see your practical review on this Kirk! We need to go to Tahara factory together soon!
Interesting you say you’d have a TX over a GX. My dad would said, forget the family and get a GX. 😅 I would prefer RX. They’re all great cars though.
Rx is the worst of the bunch. I'd take NX TX and gx over it.
@@KirkKreifelsNX isn’t as premium feeling as RX though.
Why is the RX worst of the bunch?
If you can do a video of various gx trims to get an better Idea of what different trims have to offer, am looking to get an entry level gx-550 I believe the premium model.
Rocking the fanny pack, ❤ it dude!
格好良い🎉✨✨
I say you need to drive it to Miami so Cass can see her cousin rob and I can see this for myself lol.
i dont like too much tech
Can the Lexus assist turn on massaging seats with voice command.?
I think they eliminated KDSS option on the new 4Runner too… was great engineering
Only wish for me is physical buttons for most used things (like seat heating/cooling) and a larger fuel tank. This new prado looks sweet as hell.
Can you get the overtrail trims at 3 rows? I kinda dig that colorway, that's my gripe with the 4runner that I can't get the trailhunter on 3 rows cause of the batteries. The next battery innovation cant get here sooner.
The GX with its industrial paint scheme and very black plastic interior looks like a Toyota built for a mission rather than a Lexus comfort or luxury.
Imagine that you have closed sweet deal at Costco in rebel controlled territory and are headed to the border, but being chased by a warlord in a Hilux about 2 clicks away. The GX will get you there, the Defender might break down. 😂
Exactly on point. Did no one notice they watered down the Lexus and turned it into a Toyota now….
Kinda disappointed in Toyota. Yea it’s a pretty cool design. Just saw one in person here in Hawaii. Yet it’s quite blah for the price tag inside. Looks like a little bit nicer Toyota. Gone are the wood steering wheels apparently 😂
@@ssing7113 new GX and Lexus interiors are better than ever while been up to date. So you singular opinion is wrong and that's ok. People like you will always say something nonsense like this comment
Defender already looks dated. This thing will look good for a long time.
In France we don’t have the LX GX, IS and TX. I wish we could get those one day.
Because to us, those cars looks ultra luxuary.
If you want a GX outgoing model of this new one for family usage specially with kids, Minivan is your best bet. This SUV can be a off-roading toy at best. Nice color on the your GX
The new Nissan Armada will mop the floor with the Defender just like the Land Cruiser 300 is doing currently.
Awesome
Do the wheels look as bad in person as it does online? The only wheels that look OK are the base trim ones (ironically). The rest look terrible.
I was thinking the same thing. The wheels on the base Premium trim looks the best.
They don't bother me too much but ironically I'd take the 18" or 20" instead
"Nice! Which part of Florida do you live in? The weather there is always so beautiful."
Love the color. I think it’s nicer than the previous one.
While I only had my 23 GX for seven months, I know that squishy brake pedal feeling all too well! I was honestly going to take it back the first week until I looked it up and found out it is how they all are. I skipped around a little bit in the video. Did you by chance how it drives on the highway at 70 miles an hour? My 23 drove like a drunk while it was on the highway. I know it was not the grooves in the highway no other vehicle I’ve ever had did this, it would have this weird swaying back n fourth motion a few inches when you were driving on the highway 70+.
I would consider the new GX if this version of the engine and transmission show zero manufacture failures. The new Tundra with the 3.5L is off to a VERY rough start, with someone posting almost daily that their engine failed.
My only gripe about this vehicle is the screen. We fought so hard to have the climate controls separated from the screen and we got lucky for two years and they decided to put it back. These damn screens, and people thinking it makes the car more technologically advanced. It’s actually a technological downfall considering if that screen fails not only is it expensive but you’re locked out of anything important you need. Otherwise I love it! For the price of a new TRD PRO or Trailhunter Tacoma, you might as well get this!
This drives great on the highway in comparison to the old gx. Also new safety features are night and day better
The GX 460 all have the KDSS system, because of it, it can afford to have a larger sway bar than say the 4Runner without it, and thus more rigid in cornering. It also links the front and back. So, my guess is that your car had an issue with that system, a leak perhaps and it basically acted like the sway bar was disconnected for off-roading while driving on flat road. Not normal.
Is this the same engine that’s in the new tundra?
Yes, but with smaller turbo to kick in sooner.
How does it compare to the Defender in fit and finish and driving dynamics? Which one would you pick?
Make no mistake, the Defender won't get you back from the grocery store, while that Lexus will be your son's college vehicle. I will be waiting for the 2025 Overland + after the kinks are worked out from the first model year.
elbow out the window width, easy coffee pickup.
@kirk now that you’ve driven both of them, would you choose the Overtrail version of this over the Land Cruiser? Single guy, so third row or space for kids isn’t necessary.
It's the same except the Lexus gets eKDSS. And the LC gets the hybrid for now. Get the one you think looks best 😊
So you don’t think one drives significantly better than the other? (Acceleration, road noise, suspension, seat comfort, etc?)
Also get adaptive suspension in the GX that automatically adjusts depending on mode (and conditions?).
Can tow 9096 lbs GX vs 6000 lbs.
better service with Lexus. Toyota dealers are such crooks when it comes to service.
Better interior in GX.
As a shortcut to the massage feature you can ptobably use the voice control "hey lexus, turn on massage". Havent tested it, but i know lexus has been expanding the voice control a bit in previous software updates
It doesn't work
@@KirkKreifels shame, but thanks for testng it out.
Did you try turning on massage seats by voice „Hey Lexus”?
It doesn't work. I tried in Arizona on the media drive
Kirk, If I had this kind of money to spend on a TNGA-F 4X4, I would select a Land Cruiser with two-tone paint . 🤩
I love all these polarized opinions here. It is very interesting to me having owned Toyota, Jeep and Land Rover it is about what you desire and everyone is entitled for that. If you gave me the previous Lexus GX for free, of course every Lexus/Toyota head will jump to it. But for me, If I wanted a Luxury vehicle to sit on and drive, yes Land Rover Defender did it for me. Jeep is a different story, but I'm here about Kreifels comparison with the Defender. No need to lecture me about Reliability, Long term value, If I can reach the destination and go home safely. I'm so tired of that, I'm on your side Toyota/Lexus because I lived it.. oh what a polarized universe we live in so done with comparison. That is why live in our shoes before biased opinions, and that is why I just try them all. Just in case you wonder what would I hand over my when he graduates high school? Well you know the answer, my Toyota lol
GX or MDX for short daily commuter and weekend family hauler ?
How things have changed. I used to load my infant son into the back of my Honda Prelude. Never thought it was an issue. lol
I’m so glad I’m not the only dad who rocks a fanny pack. No joke. I’ve got two.
Where did you film this? The area by the water in the first minute.
Is this a nice area to come visit for a quiet weekend with the wife?
2:25 the way you did this section with the trims on the left screen is perfect to explain the trims. Loved that.
4:00 my wife is trying to get me to have a fifth kid. Our youngest is a teenager now. 😅😅😅
People visit Naples, FL from all over the world. It's great.
@@KirkKreifels ok. Ty.
Love it .
Kirk when your wife is your assistant . Thank you
She's incredible
Kirk, love your reviews as always!! We’ve got 3 kids and that behind 3rd row space absolutely wouldn’t work for us with sports, scouts, band and dance activities! It’s a great vehicle but I’m with @richardmr2, I’m sticking with my Sienna for all our functions. Plus I can’t afford anything in this price range in this lifetime….
Is there something physically different with the GX V6 Turbo engine? Just wondering why it takes premium fuel. If you could get a different tune on the engine, then maybe it'll take regular fuel.
Turbos are smaller specifically on the GX compared to the Tundra, LX, LC300 etc
Which makes sense why it's so punchy early in the rev range and fizzles at the top
I hope they come out with an F Sport version b/c that will be the one I purchase.
What city is that? Looks nice!
Does the Land Cruiser have double laminated windows for just as good of NVH as the Lexus GX?
Defender isn't quite as quiet as this nor is the land cruiser.
I bought the new design Land Rover discovery when it came out In 2017.
It was a very good ride until it crosses the 5 yr mark when issues started to pop up every now and then
I was going to replace it with the Defender until I saw the GX 550, I put my down payment without hesitation.
Lexus reliability can’t be beaten by LandRover.
I would get overtrail plus than the luxury plus, it has ekdss and I like the two tone exterior color.
Comparing Lexus with Defender …. You sure what you’re talking bout?
He is Lexus salesman 🎉

The HUD should be adjustable... at least I hope it's adjustable like the LX570. But my opinion HUD is redundant anyways.
When's the Land Cruiser review coming? Would love to hear your comments comparing the GX and Land Cruiser, especially their engines, power and fuel economy!
I've driven the taco hybrid and this ttv6 is better. Still need more time with that smaller iforcemax
Do you think that there's any chance the coming GX Hybrid will come with the same engine as the Lexus TX550H+ PHEV?? Or do you think it'll be the same as the LC?
The best or nothing, this is what Mercedes Benz was referring to in their slogan. Lexus appears to be the only reliable brand out there, even parent company Toyota is struggling
@@naveenthemachine You are reaching bro lol. Which MB and BMW comes close to this, both in looks, reliability, price and off-road abilities. What you are looking at right here is 2024/25 Best Luxury/Adventure/Off-road SUV
@@naveenthemachine every brand has some issues even Lexus, however, Lexus appears to be able to fix their issues. My best friend's MB has been in the shop for weeks and they couldn't figure out the problem until he decided to return it and get a newer one. With Lexus, they fix the problem most of the times and it never happens again
Days of ultra reliability is gone my friend. Sorry to be the one to break the news
Just look how things have shifted at Lexus.
@@ssing7113 days of ultra reliability is not gone and once again your singular opinion doesn't matter
@@ssing7113 exactly but Lexus is still miles better than anything else out there. It has gotten much worse for the rest of the industry it seems
What's with the Fanny pack?? 😅😅
No sun/moon roof! Need more hard control buttons vice a touch screen for the vibrating seats!
The narrowness comments within the interior is also surprising given it’s the same width as a LX… does the LX have the same issues? If it doesn’t then where is all the width going?
"wide shoulders....so..."
It's because our daily is a 3rd Gen sienna which feels enormous compared to this
😍
It's funny how Defender owners never think about Lexus but that's all you Toyota customers do is think about Land Rover. They're not in the same class
I’ve heard the engine is de-tuned. Might be able to get more out of it with some third party mods.
