@@galactic-hamster7043 Im not very knowledgeable about tumblr or 4chan, but they both seem like 2 sides of the same coin, because 1- they pretty much don't have any crossplatforming, 2- they appear dead to the outside world, and 3- in distancing themselves from the judgement of the rest of the internet, they have achieved a higher degree of freedom. The major difference is that 4chan users fought to keep people out while tumblr users fought to stay alive.

The main takeaways are that tumblr tried to attack 4chan and failed because they didn’t understand how the boards worked, 4chan tried to retaliate and failed because they didn’t understand how tumblr worked. Then 4chan was successfully attacked only for it to turn out that it was because they were accidentally attacking themselves (the only thing that can take down 4chan is 4chan), and then the whole thing was resolved and a truce was reached when tumblr users started shipping humanised versions of tumblr and 4chan and then both groups started drawing porn of it.

ESSENTIALLY destiel is the ship name for the characters castiel and dean from the show supernatural, which i believe (if some people are to be believed) had hinted at them maybe being A Thing a few times, but never really committed to it. regardless of whatever in the show pointed to it, they were a very long-running ship in the fandom with a very minimal hope of actually being A Thing.
anyways at some point in the show’s long run, castiel had made a deal with some entity that he could never have true happiness. go watch sarah z’s videos on the subject if you want more specific details on that, because i don’t really recall. this will be important later.
then suddenly, like two episodes (?) before the SERIES FINALE, the show runners did a very unexpected move and has castiel confess his love to dean. and because of that deal castiel had made, he immediately got zipped away because being able to express his love was like, his true happiness i guess? but that sudden moment (because iirc that deal hadn’t been relevant in SEASONS) combined with the disproportionate lack of effort dean’s actor put into the scene + dean not really explicitly reciprocating (to some even seeming disgusted) gave it a very homophobic twinge to people, hence the joke “he got sent to super hell” tying into this vibe. this was then combined with reappropriating a cgi sequence from a completely different episode more befitting the “super hell” to create the meme we all know and love. i don’t 100% know, anyways, that’s just what i recall. go watch sarah z’s videos on it, like i said.
ANYWAYS, obviously the sudden canon status of a very popular ship in a once deeply popular on tumblr fandom set the whole site on fire, with the super hell memes being the main focus. this was combined with rumors (which turned out false) of putin retiring and the state of georgia flipping blue during the 2020 american presidential election to create beautiful chaos. the phrase “putin was so sad about the state of his favorite ship destiel that he’s retiring” and “destiel made georgia turn blue” were uttered. truly a night to never forget.
there were some secondary waves with the final two episodes of supernatural, which got memed on for completely ignoring the whole destiel being canon and just being a really terrible ending to a series as a whole, but they weren’t on the level of super hell. also a conspiracy about the dubs of the finale which seemed to show dean reciprocating more explicitly and what that meant, that’s a whole other thing though. go watch Sarah z’s videos. idk just generally go consult other sources on this. i only remember so much.

As a Tumblr outsider; it's very interesting to see glimpses into their weird culture. It's like a whole other dialect with a rich history/mythos which contributes to the strange things in their language.

i swear as someone who's been on tumblr since the early days... tumblr is just a potent bag of chaotic energies, some crazy, some hilarious. Tumblr's a lot more calmer nowadays than what it used to be, at least from what I can see. A lot of the crazier people have moved to twitter. The memes these days however, are still godtier.

ALL of these posts are from fake/parody accounts. Tramp Stamps did briefly have a tumblr but the pro map/terf one is not them and they did not come back under another account. Also the twitter thing that people point to as them being behind their own stan accounts is a fake, this is also the account that tweeted the stonewall picture

I’ve been on tumblr since 2016 and have not left two specific fandoms, and it truly feels like living amongst a small community of people im a little village after a war, occasionally hearing word from the big city and venturing to visit other places to see what’s up while avoiding the most toxic of waste dumps

Revisiting this almost 2 years later is surreal. At this point, I had been off tumblr for several years, but I was on tik tok. I remember the other side to this, the side of tik tok investigating these people.
I remember people finding all 3's storied times on the internet. Every day, a new piece of lore would be found out.
Because people didn't initially know they were industry plants. It wasn't until a duet of one of their tik tok went viral that it all popped off.
This was the rare time in internet history where most people agreed on something, and it was entirely the fault of the band. They marketed themselves to the alt crowd, the only crowd that doesn't tolerate industry plants and posers.
If they had decided to brand themselves the way MGK did, as this mainstream pop punk band, they would've likely gotten decently popular. Yes, their music sucked, but it was passable enough to sell to Disney pre teens. They didn't play it safe, like Icarus, they flew too close to tumblr.
They did have some musical talent... they could play their instruments and the singer could sing. They also had a large marketing agency behind them. They failed like comic villains fail. They were too full of hubris and destroyed themselves on their own machinations. Everything about the band was "hello fellow kids" made reality. It was a boardroom trying to cosplay as a punk band.
Anyways, I got back on Tumblr recently and I'm honestly having a blast.
I feel like Tumblr is like the Wild West and my blog is my little farm where there no one is around for miles, but every once in a while I'll hear news from town.
