    The MicroGard appears to be a much better buy than the PPE. As a side note, having worked as a Customs officer, all imported merchandise is required by law to be marked with the country of origin. If a Customs inspector had uncovered this shipment during an inspection, he would have blocked its entry into the country until each individual filter was marked with a country of origin label.

    I emailed PPE asking where their filters are made. This is what they emailed back.
    "That is a complicated question, since the materials are source and made in different country varying on the filter, They are made overseas but most of the media is from Europe while most of the body of the filters are made in Asia"

    The PPE filter has one unique feature - the internal magnet. Other than that, it isn't worth $19 more than the MicroGard. It is good to see coil springs (my preference) on both filters. Of the two, I'd take the MicroGard.

    Hi Pete! Great video as always. An interesting note is the fact that all the silicone gasketed filters seem to come from Vietnam 🤔 We received a shipment of NAPA golds the other day at work...Only one box made in Vietnam and they all had silicone gaskets with no mention on the packaging. The made in Mexicos all had nitrile rubber. Just an interesting finding I wanted to share.

    The PPE isn't bad, but that price is killer. I've exclusively switched to Microgard Select after seeing the trash we've been getting from anything owned by Mann-Hummel or Champ. Between your vids and my own analysis they are very well built and very consistent. They tick all of the boxes except the base-end bypass. I've even gone as far as finding filter numbers close to what fits on my quad, diesel tractor, Generac, and zero-turn after seeing what the Wix filters for them look like inside. Thanks for the vid.

    You're spot on Whip about the PPE 10um statement. Without a % meaningless. The throw away magnet in the dome, kinda gimmicky. And no coo, though a guess says China. Decently made filter but not for $30. O'R MSL a much better value and the clear choice between the two. But I'm with you on looking for a made in USA filter first. Fram Endurance or Purolator Boss, Napa Platinum, even a Purolator P1 ok too imo. Thanks for video.

    on filter brands with the bypass on the end opposite the opening, i usually put a "donut magnet on the end to catch any metal that may be washed off the media during bypass.believe it or not, there is a visual amount of magnetic powder attached to the magnet that wouldve went thru engine on bypass, such as cold starts.even at 3500 intervals.you can learn alot from a cut open used filter.

    Not a huge fan of the PPE but it is a nice filter and if i was going to spend that i would opt for a Donaldson or Cat Filter . It drives me nuts on these diesel forums with the Amsoil and PPE filters that have a cult like following. And it seems like PPE goes out of their way to hide who makes their filters . I am really glad to see you shared this since its whats on the inside as to what makes it work

    On the subject of just putting a neodymium cheap magnet on the outside (1 to 3 small ones) of an oil filter, it's not a bad idea. Dome end is probably better since flow is much slower there. Harbor Freight will sell you 6 for $3, so cheap. ... or Amazon, Hobby Lobby, they seem easy to get.

    • @softwaresignals
      @softwaresignals 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@TonicofSonic Magnets are on the dirty side of the oil filter anyway. Oil filter will catch any bigger chunks over 25 microns in size if the external magnet dropped off, which it probably won't. Strong neodymium magnets stay put.

    • @MarkSmith-cz3by
      @MarkSmith-cz3by 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      You can’t just use any neodynium magnet because the normal oil temperatures will cause a cheap neodymium magnet to lose its magnetism and release all the particles back to the oil so you must use a high temperature 300° plus rated magnet, and those are expensive

    • @softwaresignals
      @softwaresignals 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@MarkSmith-cz3by The magnet's coercivity is not so bad when it's attached to iron (filter housing, outside). Most losses in physics experiments are for a magnet in free air. .... And the temperature doesn't get too high with all that air and metal conductivity around it either. You'd be OK with the cheapie neodymiums here, but, you're right, temperature can matter!
      Test: If they fall off, or simply don't stick to the outside of the oil filter anymore with good force, then that is a sign they have taken too many hot trips. I'll check to see if the one small disc neodymium I have on the dome end of the oil filter is still "got it goin' on" with force. Good points. Can't know til we try it out, and the results will be obvious. (People have reported they stay on and don't get weak, as far as I've heard.)

    Looking at the filter medium under a microscope is meaningless.You need to test the filters filtration capabilities.
    Using a magnet that isn’t designed to withstand the temperatures of the oil is worthless.Standard magnets degrade significantly when they are exposed to heat.
    Also using a magnet to magnetize the filter canister makes the magnet less effective.Using a silicon gasket at the sealing surface doesn’t provide as robust a seal and could fail during high oil pressures.

      I don't think the microscope picture is meaningless. I can look at two microscope pics. and tell you which one will filter better and which one will allow a better flow.
