Thanks, Pete. I am impressed by the construction of both filters. They seem very well made and clean. Clearly, Wix is no longer making the NAPA Gold filters. I appreciate you confirming my suspicions about the similarities between these two filters. Thank you for the Website plug and for producing great videos for your subscribers.
You're Welcome Jonathan, Thank You! and
Thanks for the oil filters👍
Wix makes NAPA but Wix got bought out by Mann Hummel
West coast napa is wix east coast napa is premium guard.
Looks like the Vietnamese owners of Microguard bought some of the latest, most advanced oil filter manufacturing equipment from China. There are sales videos on TH-cam from the Chinese manufacturer. Very impressive assembly line. Mostly automated. High quality filters.
Could you post a link to the Sales video you mentioned? Very interesting
PGI makes Napa filters now. It was confirmed at their corporate award event. They look well made and I’d use them.
I am really impressed with how well each filter is made - you could not go wrong with either one.
Both high quality filters from Vietnam! I’ll take the Microgard for the price!
These PG-based filters are the current BITOG favorites. I am switching my fleet over from Champ XLs
Got to love the Microgard consistency and quality. The Napa/WIX lineup has change hands and manufacturing in the past few years. Microgard, regardless of where it's made, is one excellent filter!!👍
Napa always has marketed itself as better than the rest, and they have switched their mid tier filter to Vietnam from USA... Should say something. Both filters are amazingly clean and look very well made. I wish the MANN&Hummell and trico (champ/fram) looked that good in their upper tier consistently.
Thanks for sharing
I'd call it a tie. I would use either one since both of them are well made.
NAPA and Carquest changed suppliers over the years because both used to be made by Wix.
So nice of Jonathan! Great comparison! Thanks for sharing! Enjoy Your Day! 👍
Thanks, Ella
Have a Great Weekend👍
Hi Pete,
Nice video! Both filters look very similar and well made. No problem using either filter on my vehicles. Have a nice weekend!
Hi Kevin
Thanks! Have a nice weekend also👍
can also get the same filter as a carquest premium. look for the silicone gasket at checkout.
Nice Job, Pete. Those are two of the nicest filters I've seen you cut open in a long time. And yea, they look like they come out of the same factory. I'd use either one without a problem.
Thank Jim👍
@@WhipCityWrencher Anytime, Pete!
Hey WhipCityWrencher great video. Filter look great 👍🏽
Thank You WrenchingMafia👍
Two good looking filters!
For the past few years I’ve been using the NAPA Platinum oil filter. Your video autopsy of that filter was enough to convince me. Thanks for this one as well.
You're Welcome👍
I think this one is a straight tie. I would agree with you that I'd buy the MicroGard and save a few bucks. They are great filters.
Yep, 👔😊
Nice to see your videos again. I missed out for a few weeks. I hope you are doing well.
Thanks Drew,
Doing well, hope all is well with you also.👍
Another great share👍
Another great job Pete, keep up the great work.
Thanks 👍
Good filters and sharing today Pete, you always do good! Great job! Have a fun weekend my friend 🙂
Hi Merri
Thank You👍
Have a great weekend also😊
I just put on a microgard select last week. Feel at ease now 👍
They do look the same.
But the Microgard Select is my favorite filter. Been running them for a couple years in trucks with heavy-duty driving here in the mountains.
Another great video as usual 👌
Thanks for what you do . 😎👍👍
You're Welcome and Thank You👍
The MicroGard looks better with more inlet holes and no burs at the end of the threads. The Napa Gold looks quite jagged @ 4:19
Strange since they're both made in Vietnam.
Definitely almost the same filter. Thanks pete & have a great weekend. 🇨🇦
Thanks 404,
Have a great weekend also👍
Great info 👍
Not identical, but clearly made in the same facility. NAPA Gold gives you more media and a bigger ADBV.
Mann-Hummel dumped the contract with NAPA, so they had to go find a new manufacturer. I run the Microgard Select exclusively now because of the build quality you see. However, recently had a report of a new NAPA Gold made by PGI missing the spring, so the filter element was rattling around in the can. Another reminder to check your oil filters before installing them.
That's great advice, Thanks👍
Definitely the same filter. Happy Friday and enjoy your weekend.
Have a Great Weekend, Thanks👍
Hey friend here with full watch. Been a busy week. Time to catch up 👍
Thanks for the visit👍
Happy weekend friend 👍
Have a happy weekend also
I think I'd save the three bucks and get the Micro Guard. Pretty much identical except for a little more media.
Love your videos
Thank You😊👍
Good video Pete. I have the same for my work car. It's a NYS issued car. Same filter as my 18 impala. Go with the napa.
Thanks, John and
Thanks for Sharing.
Have a Great weekend👍

I try and make an oil filter inspection video every Friday on this TH-cam channel, Thank You!
I would definitly have to go with the MG ! Nicer baseplate and $3 less than the NAPA ! I kinda miss the tuesday videos or was there any did i miss them ? Thanks Whip !
You're Welcome Scotty,
I'm cutting out the Tuesday videos for a while, but I probably post one now and then. Summer's here and I want to play outdoors😊👍
They are not identical but similar enough that they look like they came out of the same factory. Both appear to be quality filters. I saw another video for a shop that came to the same conclusion - the Napa Gold is no longer made by Wix but is made by MicroGard.
I agree with you the similarity of both oil filters. 🤝
Very nicely made filters. Looks like Vietnam is the country have oil filters made. Nice quality on both. Thank god no cheese grater center tube to restrict oil flow. I never buy those kind.
I notice the heavier steel gauge on the Napa baseplate. Larger anti-drainback valve as well. Probably why NAPA gets more for it than O'Reilly's. Watch for sales!
Microguard has more holes.napa is nice too.
Just a word of caution. I have a very great condition 1994 Thunderbird. AutoZone has an STP version of this filter in extended guard. It was identical as well to the microgard. I use the filter with full synthetic citgo 5W-30 motor oil. On engine start was anything from a light ping to a short knocking. I switched it to a motorcraft filter in the noise went away. From what you showed here, I'm wondering if the filtration paper can be too thick causing restriction.
Hate to see Wix no longer making Napa filters, so between the two, I'd pick whichever's on sale.
Two of the best filters I’ve seen. Super clean and great quality. However, the threads look cleaner on the MicroGard, whereas the Wix looks to have a lot of flash on the end. It’s a shame I can’t use them on my Mazda CX-5, because the bypass valve settings are too high.
I don't see why you couldn't still use them. It just wouldn't go into bypass as much.
The high bypass shouldn't hurt anything and some would say it's actually a good thing. You don't actually want your filter going into bypass. That's unfiltered oil cycling through your engine.
I bought microgard filter finally get to use in my 09 Tacoma. I can't remove an OEM oil filter when first try to change oil.
Nice video as always. Could you make a video for the Microguard MGL57356? The reason I'm asking is because I saw one today from O'Reilly and they are now made in China. I remember from your previous videos they were made in USA or Mexico. Hope the quality is still the same.
Thanks, I'll put it on my to do list
My Wife says you need a coil spring checker for tension.
Looks like either would get the job done.
I wonder if the difference in filter media length is cost-cutting by micro guard, or just normal variation within tolerance for this size filter?
Good question.
I'll try to remember that if I compare another Gold and MicroGard of a different size.
Recently came across a new oil filter I haven't seen before. JEGS has their own brand. It's very competitively priced at 3-4 dollars and looking at the one picture they provide it seems decent. Have you seen these before?
I've never opened one, but I just checked their website, and the image they show of the inside of the filter looks very similar to the filters in this video, except for no silicone gasket. They claim high flow with a micron rating of 99% at 23 microns. I'll try and open one of these up soon.
@WhipCityWrencher I was considering getting one for my chevy and dodge (they use the same filter). At $4 it's kinda hard to beat if the quality is there. I order from jegs sometimes so shipping costs wouldn't be a huge deal.
Every car has four main filters: the cabin filter, oil filter, fuel filter and air filter. The function of all these filters is to enable flows and catch impurities: the dust and contaminants in the air, the impurities in the fuel or the dirt in the motor oil. Could this be true? I had no idea
Yep, exactly😊👍
MicroGuard is manufactured by Purolator/WIX. They're actually really good filters.
MicroGard is actually made by Premium Guard/PGi and yes they're amazing filters. Mann-Hummel now owns Wix/Purolator and the quality has suffered.
Great!
For your devoted german / europeen viewers could you press the inch / cm - button for translation!?!
This would be perfect!
I am here dude!
No your not, you're over there.
Are you sure? 😁
Lol love this preview channel. My used 0range can was 1/8 off center of center tube leaking by. Love the WHIP OBSERVATORY!!!!!!!
Its a shame they are not made in the USA, hardly anything is anymore. I try to buy American made when I can,
I Agree👍
Thanks for the feedback😊
Many made in America products are worse than comparable ones made in Asia. America needs to step it up.
Too many good American-made filters like Wix, Purolator, Amsoil, VP Racing etc available at competitive pricing to be messing around with Vietnamese or Chinese products.
I wish they were made in the USA also.
Wix/Purolator are mostly made in Mexico and made in China now since they were purchased by Mann-Hummel and the quality has been poor. Vietnam has been producing the best oil/air filters on the market for a few years now.
Holding a Purolator One filter in my my ATM, and it says "Made in USA." Are you saying that's a misrepresentation??
@@kimmillard9445 Purolator is now owned by Mann-Hummel and many of their filters are made in Mexico and China. Some filters are still made in America. Purolator filters have also been shown to have poor quality control as people cut them open and show torn media and closed louvers.
Ozark Automotive appears to be a distribution and importation network owned by or part of O’Reilly auto parts. Mann and Hummel has a factory in Vietnam . These are foreign made Wix and Purolator filters. That Purolator baseplate is unmistakable for anything else. I will say they look perfect and most likely made with close to zero touch labor and the plastic dust cap looks very sterile. Why can’t we build factories like that here?
Nope. Napa Gold now made by Premium Guard. M&H now history.
@@faxmen09 Yep! I missed the mark on that one. Wow, it’s built perfectly, looks like a Purolator on the outside and sells for maybe 6 bucks? Damn…..
Because your oil filter would cost twice as much and the stock holders and CEOS would have to take a pay cut.
@@millionmilegarage9587 The Napa base plate is definitely not the standard Premium Guard base plate.
I would never buy a filter that doesn't contain the micron rating on the box.
The original gold 😂now not so original?
pool pump repair guy longwood fl 32750 approved. thank WCW
Thanks, Jay
At first glance they both look like Mann and Hummel products. The filter on the right has a Purolator baseplate and the one on the left looks like a Wix. So they may be Vietnam built German filters. How Global of them to export more American jobs. I love me some Purolator but I like mine to speak English.
they’re premium guards. if M+H had their hands in it they wouldn’t loook this good.
I like the Purolator Boss, still made in the USA
@@WhipCityWrencher if you like efficiency you wouldn’t
@@WhipCityWrencher Amen Brother!
@@brendan747 99% at 25 microns is not that bad.
Should I switch to these from Fram Ultra? Fram has better specs but sloppy build.
If you want a full synthetic media with a slightly better micron rating then I would go with the Fram Endurance oil filter.
