ok I'm gonna spit the coldest take ever, but it does REALLY irk me how the Switch got rid of Home Menu themes, and the fact that even when docked it's still got the same cramped menu was a SUPER weird choice
This has made me realize that, while the Switch is still my #1 favorite console, it still has its significant issues, and the next console has a lot to live up to.
I’m fine with subscriptions for game services like battle passes, but to pay more money for a feature that you need to even play a game AND for that feature that was free to become paid, that’s where I draw the line. It sucks,
It's just crazy because you're already paying your internet bill, and then have to pay a subscription for something that doesn't even pay for servers. But still, $20 a year for something that should be free is better than the $120 a year on xbox and ps.
The worst thing about the icons for me is that you can’t pair any of the elements like the background or border with a Mii or even a character from another game
The paywall is my biggest gripe personally. I like to collect icons, but when there's already so little choices because only the "RelEvAnT" games get them, you're asking me to get games I have NO interest in and, even in the cases of games I already happen to own and play, are FORCING me to play multiple sessions separate by 24h at bare minimum? Like, it's just NOT worth it, financially or in general, just for maybe a couple icons I either missed while they were free or couldn't get because you only added them AFTER the paywall (I'm looking at you especially, Mario Odyssey).
@@CR1MSONACE No, I meant that NSO got new Odyssey icons after the paywall was introduced to it. So even if I did like the new icons, they want them to be an incentive to get me to buy the game I'm otherwise not interesting in getting. It's a poor incentive, which makes it feel cashgrabby especially given Odyssey was already a massive success without it. '>_>
An issue I have with the Switch in general is how bland it feels. The 3DS and WiiU were bursting with personality and Nintendo charm, yet the Switch lacks so much of it. Like if Nintendo wanted to remove all the creativity that made there previous systems unique
As a 3DS and a Wii U owner I still play on those consoles but both of them weren't that perfect, I do remember an absolute fact that the Wii U had some horrible marketing, lackluster Wii U games that were based on 3DS games, Star Fox zero, Paper Mario color splash, Mario party 10, animal crossing amiibo festival and a whole lot more. Just a reminder, not everything was beautiful and pretty during that era.
@@AlessandroLoscueva NGL I agree with you on the hacked version, Also not all of the Wii U games were awful. I do love Super Smash Bros for Wii U and 3DS so at least there was some gold
It also annoys me how even if you have a bunch of platinum points, you need NSO to even buy new icons. Nintendo messed up a lot of the things on the switch apart from the games. I hope they fix em with the NS2
The fact that you can’t just automatically save your games data but having to trust a save data is also why the online membership sucks, and then end up losing all the progress because you had to save it again is not a great sign. Heck the 3DS, Wii, Wii U, and the DS even did a better job at saving data.
One thing though. I actually like the idea of N64 Mature, it allows Nintendo to add such games as Conker's Bad Fur Day, or that impressive port of Resident Evil 2. Maybe way too optimistic to expect that, but you know, they put Golden Eye for the service, so I can expect anything by now.
Yeah, apparently people don't get that those old games are STILL rated M, and they can't be added to the base app without it having to be re-rated M as well.
It seems like the eShop and Online apps of the Switch are just overlays of the console’s homescreen rather than a designated app. That’s why they’re not as elaborately designed like ones on previous consoles. Hopefully the Switch 2 makes the eShop its own app so that there’s no lag, it has music and is intricately designed.
1:38 Made even worse by the fact that the Switch home menu only has your most recently 12 games/applications in only the order of how recent you played them with everything else getting thrown into an "All Software" tab which gets really cluttery for people that play more than 12 games/applications including each individual NSO classic system app. The DSi, Wii, 3DS, and Wii U all let you organize your home menu in any order you'd like with everything staying in your consistent order as if you're playing a video game compilation built into the system.
The fact that you have to buy an online pass to just play games with wifi is the worst part. Even the 3DS, Wii, DS, and Wii u were generous enough to allow you to play with wifi.
Nintendo saw the unique quirks and charm that the Nintendo 3DS and Wii U had as fat that needed to be trimmed, and they conflated the unique quirks and charm with full on features that a video game system in the 2020s should have when doing so.
I am gonna be real here, I did the nintendo survey for feedback quite a few times back in 2019 to 2020 (still do them today for more ideas) which involved me basically copy and pasting the same idea that involved the icons and plat points and the my nintendo physical rewards. I thought it was a good idea, much better usage than spending them on digital backgrounds or prints. it might not be everyones favorite thing but I felt something like this was needed since they barely added Icons prior to them being implemented as a feature in the app. Not everyone may like them and not everyone has a big amount of plat points but to those who have kinda invested themselves in the program, I felt it would be a better usage of the points rather than them rotting and expiring.
One thing that bothers me is that you need a NSO subscription to downloads those icons! Like, why? Is that to "incentivize" you to buy a NSO subscription?
They can totally spice up how everything looks, but considering the Switch Online app and eShop lags while looking bare bones I believe the reasons I've seen why UI doesn't look as neat as it did on older consoles.
While I agree with almost every point in the video, the N64 MATURE 17+ app is necessary unfortunately as otherwise the whole N64 app will become 17+ locked due to age rating. Yes these games are 30 years old but their age ratings are still valid up to this day and Nintendo has to treat these like current games as long these games won't get a new check up for a probably new rating. Seperating these games out into an own app makes sure all the other N64 games can stay open to everyone without any age restriction. In Europe, the MATURE app is even 18+ due to USK and PEGI regulations. In Japan the app is called the "Nintendo 64 18+" App as also Golden Eye 007 has a 18+ rating in japan unlike f.e. europe with a rating of 16+ or the US with 15+ or something like that.
There's no personality to it either. The old eshops had unique music that made it fun and memorable. Everything about the Switch eshop is very corporate and dull.
I felt betrayed when they released Kirby's Return to Dreamland Deluxe and never gave you icons for Halcandra and the FINAL BATTLE BATTLEFIELD, WHICH WAS PROBABLY THE BEST THING THEY DIDN'T GIVE ME!
I don’t deny the integration here was sloppy, and we have the right to complain, but on the other hand, they didn’t HAVE to add the icons, they’re just extras for the diehard fans.. everything else about the NSO app is being unforgivable tho, gg NB
All icons should have just been unlock-able by completing certain requirements. For example I want the majoras mask link with tatl above his one hand, make that one unlockable by having the subscription and beating the game.
7:50 I remember at one point, Donkey Kong on NES had icons, and one of them is literally just the oil barrel from the game. It doesn’t even have a background like the palm tree. It’s such a stupid icon to have and I love it so much that it’s just my icon now and I refuse to change it.
4:42 this was so annoying because I had over 1k plat points and when the switch icons came out I had no plat coins anymore so I missed out on so many icons and I never have any coins for the icons I want
I think they were just lazy with the integration because the Nintendo switch online section came out well after the eShop. Hopefully whenever the next console comes around, it'll have better integration with all this stuff
I already knew just from the title that this vid would be inspired by Beat em Ups' one, but to straight up say it at the start is very cool of you, Nathaniel.
I think the Platinum Points should be utilised to hand out in game rewards. They don’t need to hand out much but giving something like a sum of bells in ACNH or a sum of rupees in any of the Zelda games would be nice. Or hand out outfits in games like Echoes of Wisdom which would be harmless. Right now they’re just pointless
Would this then be considered in game purchases by the ESRB? I mean, not like any game with NSO available isn't already getting that label slapped on, but still.
@@LG555 i dunno, honestly. did games that integrated Play Coins on 3DS (Pokemon Rumble Blast off the top of my head, probably a few others?) get slapped with that too? it seems fairly comparable, because you can't buy either of them with real money it's not _technically_ a _'purchase'_ per se
How about instead of the dumb Online Missions. Make them like achievements/trophies. Have certain Missions you have to complete in each game and if you complete all of them get a Badge. There are 3 types of Missions: Normal, Rare and Super Rare and you can get platinum points for NSO for completing them. If you get a Badge, you get gold points. Like PS Trophies you can also display your mission completions and badges on your account. The sound for Missions would be a Coin sound effect from Mario and the sound for a Badge would be the Moon collect sound effect from Mario Odyssey. (Also change NSO's name back to Nintendo Network)
Nah, you see, this would be an extrinsic reward, and Nintendo resently really doesn't like that. You should only play games for the sake of playing the game and having fun.
What if they had the system linked to achievements? For example, getting the "After Alterna" achievement in Splatoon 3 would give you some extra icons and themes linked to the game. Plus, Platinum Points could essentially become Gamerscore and your total Platinum count could be shown off on your account, or you can use the points to get even m o r e icons not linked to achievements, but to the software that you have played. Have you played Skylanders Superchargers and want to get an icon of Spitfire? Cough up some Platinum Points and you can. By performing well in the games, you can customize your console however you want. Maybe they could introduce the Mii Plaza again, but some of the minigames ONLY unlock if you have enough Platinums in your score, and anyone who you Streetpass or play with online comes to your plaza and is available to play minigames like Feed Mii or Battleground Z. Heck, they could even use this to reintroduce Nintendo Land.
since beatemups made the eshop sucks video now i miss 3ds and wiiu and wii eshop anyway me personally i only used nintendo online system 1-3 years and it was the beginning years of online then i got bored and played pokemon leaf green and emerald
Vouchers are the only way I got to TOTK and Splatoon 3, saved 30 dollars. Also, vouchers and gift cards that aren't spent can be a nightmare for trying to keep up with so having it expire gives a set time you can be sure money spent years ago won't suddenly take away from current sales.
God help anyone genuinely playing bedrock on Switch. I think it's a bad enough experience that it should be legally classified as an extreme torture method. It's barely above being completely unplayable most of the time. The craziest part is modding your Switch to run linux then playing the Java edition with sodium and controlify gets you a good experience that doesn't take 10 years to load a chunk 💀. It actually runs really well at a decent render distance and feels much better to control and play as well.
Another annoying thing about the Switch UI is the News app. You can't delete messages at all. You will end up having old news items dating back to when you set up your Switch for the first time, just sitting there and take up space on the internal memory. The 3DS also had this silly limitation too with it's news/messages tab. They should have included an option to delete the message after reading it, and I hope they do this for the new Switch or whatever it's going to be called. And for the various Virtual Console apps, they show a quite intrusive banner when you begin using a specific console app for the first few plays. It shows how to use the menu features like the Rewind feature or what the Start and Select buttons are. In a platform game, this banner can cover up the bottom of the screen, such as the first levels of Super Mario Bros. There is unused space on the left and right hand sides, so they could have just displayed these messages there so you can still learn the menus while not having the messages interfere with the game screen.
Nintendo treats customers badly because they know they can get away with it. It’s insane what Nintendo fans put up with and still keep shoving money down Nintendos throat.
Little story about just how bad nintendo's online is: So i've 100% a lot of my switch games (Botw, MK8d, SMO,SM3DL...) and thought it'd be smart to yk, save the data to a cloud if the worst where to arrive. I bought NSO subscription's 3 month pack (using the NSO 3 month card), saved my data and felt safe. Shortly after my nintendo switch broke. While that hurt i was kinda glad i still kept my coordinates to my Nintendo account so when i'd get the data from th ecloud back. A year later, long after my NSO subscription was over, i bought a new switch and with it an NSO 3 month subscription pack to recover my data. I connected my account, set NSO up, and went in game data to try to download the data from the cloud. It turns out, since i hadn't been paying through out the whole year for an NSO subscription, my data had been deleted and there is now no way for me to recover all the data i saved to the cloud. Worst part is, i geniuenly don't know if it's because nintendo is just incapable of making adequate online services or if it's out of pure greed.
If only we could exchange platinum points for themes for the switch's home menu. Like c'mon Nintendo why can we still not have themes for the home menu?!
Nintendo just became a follower of the other companies. I don’t understand why these gaming companies started to charge for online it makes no sense but hey MONEY MONEY MONEY
@@AnotherWarioWareFan They make millions of dollars on the console and game sales in just one month alone. Steam for example has no problem providing free online service.
11:14 I don't buy that excuse because plenty of other websites let you use your own icons with no problem. Even if there is a problem, have a report system in place to report inappropriate pictures.
If Nintendo still wants to hide icons behind challenges, it should be challenges like the following: 1. Beat World 1-4 without collecting any coins. (You get a icon with a coin with an X through it). 2. Make opponents crash 5 times during a race in Mario Kart (you get a red shell icon) 3. Win all sports in a row in Nintendo Switch Sports 2: Milan 2026 (you get an Olympic Rings icon) 4. Get over 10 Stars in Mario Party (you get a Star icon)

I think all the problems stem from the app being designed as an advertisement or something that benefits Nintendo rather than a service that benefits the consumers. All of the icons are advertisements for newly released games. All the platinum coin missions reinforce what the service has to offer.
The one thing that pisses me off about the icons is that there was a specific icon that I wanted but I never got the chance to get... BECAUSE I NEVER HAD A SWITCH WHILE IT WAS AVAILABLE
@@repoversemedium They're probably using that money to develop high budget games cuz usually nowadays it cost money to develop video games. I've heard breath of the wild cost $120,000,000 to develop.

At the very least for the Icons, make it so that I can see the Icons I own the games for. I don't mind paying with platinum points, but rewarding those who purchase specific games can always have access to purchase the Icons of that game. They don't want kids playing good games
Maybe because conker bad fur day
I think this is more of an ESRB problem than a Nintendo problem.
Mario Odyssey was available before the play 3 times thing. If that's what you mean.
@@M64bros And the 3ds had some mediocre games as well

They probably won't be adding much to that lol. Maybe one or two updates
Because they are overlays. This makes them open way faster. Heck, on the Wii U the loading was so slow they had to add a minigame
Groups exist in the tab at the end. You have to press L (or R. I forget).
@@batmanbud2 They do help though it's still less convenient than the 3DS and Wii U
the entire Switch menu has less to show then the quick start menu on the Wii U gamepad, even when docked, and I find that super weird
The fact that you have to buy an online pass to just play games with wifi is the worst part. Even the 3DS, Wii, DS, and Wii u were generous enough to allow you to play with wifi.
now that I think about it, I don't think I've EVER used the Online App! Just played the games LOL!...
Nintendo saw the unique quirks and charm that the Nintendo 3DS and Wii U had as fat that needed to be trimmed, and they conflated the unique quirks and charm with full on features that a video game system in the 2020s should have when doing so.
The bad marketing reception from tbe wii u days has really prevnted them from trying "kiddy" things like this.
Not everyone may like them and not everyone has a big amount of plat points but to those who have kinda invested themselves in the program, I felt it would be a better usage of the points rather than them rotting and expiring.
the fact they made a seperate app for the adult n64 games but let dating games be on eshop even on the parental controls is crazy

They can totally spice up how everything looks, but considering the Switch Online app and eShop lags while looking bare bones I believe the reasons I've seen why UI doesn't look as neat as it did on older consoles.
7:17 A few months ago when the Earthbound icons came out, I downloaded switch online JUST for the Mother icons... and I was a day late...
The fact that we got an icon of a damn coconut tree over King Dedede or Meta Knight is crazy
The thing with the new Switch icons is that they require membership and I'm not paying for a membership because Amazon no longer offers gift cards.
If it's laggy without music, you know it'd perform worse with music.
@@rjd-kh8etok. It's better to have music to listen to while lagging then no music and lag.
I felt betrayed when they released Kirby's Return to Dreamland Deluxe and never gave you icons for Halcandra and the FINAL BATTLE BATTLEFIELD, WHICH WAS PROBABLY THE BEST THING THEY DIDN'T GIVE ME!
I wish Nintendo’s online was handled better. They should just take out the online part and have you pay the subscription for everything else.
The BASE subscription at that. The Expansion Pack is not worth its cost.

I don’t deny the integration here was sloppy, and we have the right to complain, but on the other hand, they didn’t HAVE to add the icons, they’re just extras for the diehard fans.. everything else about the NSO app is being unforgivable tho, gg NB
Yeah they didn't no body wanted that or asked for that lmao
The "Icons" are literally just screenshots in the game I can take for free😂

Icons sound like they're just a few steps away from becoming NFTs.
At thus point, I honestly feel like Nintendo just pulls these moves to be different

@@noodleman4555see this is why I bought java on my steam deck, because playing anything but bugrock on switch automatically feels like an upgrade
Little story about just how bad nintendo's online is:
So i've 100% a lot of my switch games (Botw, MK8d, SMO,SM3DL...) and thought it'd be smart to yk, save the data to a cloud if the worst where to arrive.

I think all the problems stem from the app being designed as an advertisement or something that benefits Nintendo rather than a service that benefits the consumers. All of the icons are advertisements for newly released games. All the platinum coin missions reinforce what the service has to offer.
