    I think what Nintendo does is smart. The way I see it: All hardware becomes outdated at some point, so you might as well choose the cheapest one. Give all your games stylized, cartoony visuals so no one can tell your system is outdated. You get a jump on the competition in pricing, your games are cheaper and easier to make, and you can focus more on gameplay. It's brilliant.

      The key point is, they’re a video games company that also produces hardware.
      Sony and Microsoft are big tech companies who also happen to make video games on their own hardware.

    It's also worth mentioning how Nintendo seems to be one of the few game companies that knows how to budget a game and doesn't see firing most of their staff as a viable business strategy. Most of the folks who made the original NES games are still working at Nintendo today, employee retention is like 98% or something crazy. There a folks who joined Sony's biggest developers only a couple of years ago who have now been laid off just so the line keeps going up. It's no wonder that Nintendo keeps chugging along at their own pace when not every game they make costs half a billion dollars to make and needs to sell 20 million units to break even.

    What people tend to gloss over, or completely forget, is that Nintendo have been making toys/entertainment devices of some capacity since 1889. They look at Sony and Xbox as the new whippersnappers.
    In the beginning, they were legitimately competing. PS1/Xbox era. Now? Its Sony versus Microsoft. With Nintendo off doing their own thing.
    They dont worry about being the #1 that year, or that decade. They concern themselves with where they'll be much longer term. Being #1 is cool, but what's the point if you crash and burn? Sega, CDi, Game and Watch.. a lot of small time, and big time game companies have lived and died in Nintendo's shadow.
    Sony and Microsoft do market research to optimize sales, Nintendo optimizes for customer satisfaction... Except the Pokemon Company... That's.. different 🤷‍♂️

      @@xenobryan Yeah, I grew up later, but it remains true. Sony and Microsoft are, were and will be conglomerates with an emphasis on gaming CONSOLES. They largely outsource games.
      Nintendo is a game and game console company. Full stop. They outsource some games, sure. And they stock others on their console, but Nintendo is synonymous with Zelda, Mario, Splatoon more recently. The GAMES part. It's what the war was about in the beginning, and now it's what's made the war not worth fighting.
      PlayStation and Xbox fight in console specs now and auxiliary things. Nintendo has, is, and always will go with playability, games and enjoyment. It's not a dick measuring contest, and Nintendo already pioneered 3D graphics and a whole bunch more 🤷‍♂️😂

    He understands. Core Console Rules 101.
    *A Videogame Console is ALWAYS defined by its Exclusives.*
    Without Exclusives, Videogame Consoles no longer need to exist. Everything would just go to a PC.
    Consoles MUST distinguish themselves from PCs at all times.
    They must deliver a UNIQUE experience you simply can't get anywhere else.
    The differential factor is why Consoles have defined the gaming experience over PC for decades.
    Nintendo is the last TRUE game maker making Consoles today. That's why they know these rules so well.
    Hell, they wrote the rule book about 40 years ago!

    • @johnlucas1543
      @johnlucas1543 3 วันที่ผ่านมา +8

      @@red_rose.s_ Nope. Not at all. That's PC propaganda.
      Spoken so much online because that's what the PC World wants.
      The PC game market was crushed by the NES Console in the 1980s & there's a giant ongoing grudge seeking to undermine Nintendo's place in this industry, a place they gained through the Videogame Console.
      I call it the War of PC vs. FC. The Personal Computer vs. The Family Computer.
      All Nintendo Consoles are extensions of their original Family Computer or Famicom.
      Many times 'Famicom' is the working title of their consoles before getting their final name.
      When the Crash of 1983 happened, Videogame Consoles were supposed to die with it.
      And they WOULD have & SHOULD have...if not for Nintendo reestablishing the Console in 1985 with NES.
      Nintendo's games & the rules/guidelines they set on how to run an industry made it virtually impossible for the PC gamemakers to compete & make a living selling games on PCs.
      The PC gamemakers were forced to come to the Console to make money & sell games.
      And many of them resented this reality caused by Nintendo & reinforced by Nintendo's competitors like Sega.
      So the PC guys decided on the next best course of action now that they were stuck in this reality.
      Shape the Console world in the way of the PC. Mold Consoles to submit to the PC way of doing things.
      So they propped up key Nintendo competitors using them as puppets for their will.
      Feed games to Nintendo competitors & starve Nintendo out so that Consoles collapse & PC takes its place.
      Use media outlets to broadcast various levels of Anti-Nintendo propaganda to weaken Nintendo's position.
      Use Nintendo's strengths against them & do the opposite of what they tend to do to make it "The Norm".
      They at first tried to do this with Sega which is why PC games like John Madden Football rooted itself on Sega creating the Sports Sim Gamer category. This category would always offset Nintendo's ways.
      But Sega was a talented natural gamemaker itself seeking to be another Nintendo of their own.
      You couldn't cause as much chaos with them so the PC guys soon propped up non-gamemakers.
      Sony was the perfect choice to set up shop since their expertise is in audio/video/multimedia.
      They would ALWAYS be dependent on outside gamemakers to supply their platform.
      With Sega & especially Nintendo, the Dog Wags the Tail. But with Sony, the Tail Wags the Dog.
      If 1st Party-centric platforms are the norm, turn everything into 3rd Party-centric platforms.
      There's always gonna be more 3rd Parties than 1st Parties so you can create the illusion of importance.
      This is how Sega was sabotaged with Dreamcast vs. Sony PlayStation 2 & incoming Microsoft XBox.
      Sega lost the Sports Games, right? And even Sony was being setup themselves by Microsoft.
      Sony was an unwitting patsy not knowing XBox WAS the PC specifically designed TO kill Consoles.
      The PC guys would use both Sony & Microsoft to push things towards PC. The Mulitplat Market.
      XBox was always the decoy to de-console-ize the PlayStation over time.
      Can't risk having Sony become another Nintendo themselves when that's what PC's trying to stop.
      That's where the tug-of-war of 3rd Party exclusives & ever-growing expensive horsepower hype came from.
      Each generation XBox competed, PlayStation became more & more PC-like over Console-like.
      What the PC guys failed to understand though is how airtight Nintendo's Model for the industry was.
      It could be shaken & rocked a bit but it could never be broken.
      Even corrupting the Japanese Arcade 3rd Parties against Nintendo was limited because no Japanese company wants to be a non-factor in their homeland.
      They would have to deal with the bedrock of the Japanese Videogame Industry, Nintendo the King.
      Horsepower worship ensured they would overlook lower-tech devices like Handheld Consoles.
      The PC Contigent had no answer to the phenomenon of Pokémon & the Game Boy.
      And they had no answer when Nintendo readjusted its release cadence to never have to depend on 3rd Party gamemakers either. They used to make space for the 3rd Parties but now just pushed 1st/2nd Parties most.
      All of this came to a head when Sony tried to 'Sega' Nintendo out of the business with the PSP.
      Nintendo went into the 7th Generation with both things the PC guys had no answer for.
      And the result was the Gaming Revolution of DS & Wii undermining ALL of their efforts.
      Scared, shook, & terrified the PC guys went into another evolution, the Tablet PC market.
      Enter Apple & the iPhone with Google & the Androids. Now Nintendo has to fight on another front.
      Fighting in the Console realm against Sony & Microsoft with their PC-like Consoles...
      Fighting the PC itself through Valve's Steam which rallied the once-destroyed PC market...
      Fighting the Tablet PC AKA Mobile against Apple & Google with their Smartphones with Freemium.
      Took a little while for Nintendo to adjust to this new disruption (the 3DS/Wii U days) but they would eventually figure it out just like they did in the 1990s PlayStation disruption (the current Switch days).
      The 7th Generation of DS & Wii returned things to Nintendo's form but they still had resistance.
      The early 8th Generation of 3DS & Wii U had to deal with Mobile distractions buying the PC guys time.
      The late 8th Generation of Switch showed the PC guys that time was up. The Gaming Revolution is ongoing.
      Nintendo wanted to end the Console Wars which is really the War of PC vs. FC in the 7th Generation.
      They knew that the PC 3rd Parties could only go so far before they reached the end of the road.
      And now we're here with 8th Gen Switch making 9th Gen PS5 & XBox Series bow to them. The war is over.
      It doesn't matter what the PC guys want. They do not run this business. Nintendo's Consoles do.
      Exclusives will CONTINUE to matter as long as Nintendo exists in this business.
      And since Nintendo beat the biggest companies in the world, there's no one left to make them do different.

    • @johnlucas1543
      @johnlucas1543 3 วันที่ผ่านมา +3

      @@jwil4286 Because the simple truth of it is Sony is not a True Gamemaker.
      Sony started with Media & Media Players. They started in Sound AKA Audio.
      And this naturally extended into Picture AKA Video. They became Multimedia.
      That's what they do. That's what they know. That's their DNA & companies always follow their DNA.
      It's no surprise that all the CD-addons we saw from Consoles in the 1990s failed.
      Nintendo's CD-addon for the Super Famicom/SNES AKA the Nintendo PlayStation.
      Sega's CD-addon for the Sega Mega Drive/Sega Genesis AKA the Sega CD.
      NEC's CD-addon for the PC Engine/TurboGrafx-16 AKA PC Engine CD-ROM/TurboGrafx CD.
      Atari's CD-addon for the Atari Jaguar AKA Atari Jaguar CD.
      None of them were multimedia companies trained extensively in audio/video.
      Sony was & they had the best success with a CD-based game system in the Sony PlayStation.
      Why they were the very co-creator of the Compact Disc (CD) themselves (with Phillips).
      3DO & Phillips CD-i knew to make an inherent CD-based system but Sony knew it best & succeeded.
      Sony enters in an age of FMV or Full Motion Video so they focus on the Video of Videogames.
      While Nintendo focuses on the Games of the Videogames.
      Sony is the one who brought multimedia features to the gaming experience & made them stick.
      It's what they know. It was so easy to move right into DVD with PlayStation 2 for these same reasons.
      However, this is the Videogame Industry & eventually you have to know about Games to win long-term.
      At the end of the day, Multimedia are side features. The main media is Games in a Game Machine.
      This is why PSP got eclipsed by the Nintendo DS, ruler of the Handheld Gaming Ghetto.
      The buzz about multimedia wore off & games were the focus again.
      Nintendo's DNA is Cards, Toys, Games so it's natural why they won when people focused on games again.
      Sony's Multimedia buzz had people thinking CDs/DVDs (Music/Movies) were superior to Cartridges (Games).
      Nintendo's Gaming fundamentals restored faith in Cards (Games) over UMDs (Music/Movies).
      Cartridges are Card-tridges. The Game Cards & SD Cards in Nintendo's handhelds are just small Cartridges.
      Sony was humbled & forced to adapt to Card-tridges in PlayStation Vita against Nintendo 3DS just like Nintendo was forced to adapt to CDs/DVDs in Gamecube against Sony PlayStation 2.
      But Sony doesn't inherently know Games (Cards/Cartridges) so they folded against the 3DS.
      Secret was Nintendo never fully left Cards/Cartridges behind on their Home Consoles.
      Can't save anything without a Memory CARD on Gamecube.
      Can't store decent data without an SD CARD on Wii.
      Wii U's downfall came partially because there was no significant CARD part in the console.
      The SD Card slot was only for Wii Mode. Wii U wanted you to use this clunky external hard drive for storage.
      A CARD Company like Nintendo must sell you CARDS so you see the correction in the Switch.
      Return to CARD-tridge or CARD in Games with micro SD CARDS for proper storage. And you got a hit.
      Companies can't leave their DNA. Nintendo knows Cards, Toys, & Games. Sony knows Multimedia.
      Everything that plays out is Destiny.

    My way of thinking (and this could be completely wrong) is that Xbox and PlayStation have games that try to justify the new hardware’s existence. You constantly hear in marketing about how the game takes advantage of so-and-so
    Nintendo makes new hardware to facilitate their games. They’re not interested in the most advanced flashy stuff, they just make systems that can handle what they have planned for their games. Once the system gets old and/or their ideas get ambitious, they start work on a new system that can facilitate those games.

      @Sacred_Sword 4 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@superavel Well no it depends if you're talking sales wise or power wise in which in both they've definitely lost a few generations.
      Sales wise Nintendo first started lacking with the Nintendo 64. They made a lot of hiccups during the rest of the 90s like not having a disk drive due to Nintendo's fear of piracy that made them slip up when Sony entered the ring. It's the same story for the GameCube. It wasn't that powerful and Nintendo and the rest of the competition just couldn't keep up with the PS2s sales. Wii wiped the floor with Microsoft and Sony but as you mentioned Nintendo fell flat on their face with the Wii U.
      Power wise it's a similar situation. The N64 wasn't as powerful as the PlayStation, GameCube wasn't as powerful as the rest of the competition, the Wii was just a slightly more powerful GameCube, the Wii U goes without saying, and the Switch is obviously less powerful than the competition. Although Nintendo has never really focused on making a powerful console to compete so the console wars for them is all about sales I guess.

    • @superavel
      @superavel 4 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@Sacred_Sword As I said it counts by how you consider a generation. People forget the DS is a N64 in power and the Game Boy Advance was basically the same generation as the N64 so counting either one of them still means Nintendo beats the PlayStation. The easiest way to look at it is if you combine sales during pretty much any period, Nintendo comes out on top. For example during the PS2 years, Sony sold a total of 363.77 million consoles. Nintendo in that same time period sold 444 million. the rest is just branding.

    • @superavel
      @superavel 4 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@Sacred_Sword Power is a stupid metric because the ones who launch later win. The ones with the more money can just delay their console launches to beat the market leader. That's how it works. The GBA is the best example of this. The Game Boy had a shelf life of 9 years, 12 if you include the Color. GBA basically had a 3 year run before the DS. Sony waited till the GBA launched then power leapt the console by launching three years later in 2004 which gave it a generational advantage. Nintendo could have responded by rolling out an even more powerful console the year later or something similar in power the same year but then what you're giving the competition is ports which is exactly what Sony would have wanted. So instead they just upped the GBA graphics a little and added a second screen and called it a "generation" when it technically never ended. The Switch is now in the same boat. The PS5 Slim, the just announced Xbox Series X and rumours of a PS5 Pro is basically there to delay till Nintendo Switch runs out of Steam and needs a sequel which they have now announced. Then in 2027, we'll suddenly have Xbox enter the ring with a portable Xbox that will be about the power of a PS5 and everyone is wowed. Meanwhile Sony will consolidate the home console market with the PS6. Lol. Predictable reactionary bullshit from competitors who hate real innovation.

    Why should we as consumers have to pay $3-500 minimum to play one or a few games?
    And to answer your question of where to buy something like Sonic X Shadow Generations, while I can't answer for you, I can pose a few questions to ask yourself: What framerate do I want? Will I use mods? Should I wait for a sale? Will I need it to be portable?
    Questions like those are to give an idea of what to ask yourself if you own multiple platforms
    This is when companies need to make their hardware appealing. Free online, good BWC, graphic settings, more often sales, just to name a few, and even the Switch has a mass casual appeal of being portable. Something to sell itself on outside of exclusives. Yep, I have two consoles, a Nintendo Switch, and a PC. Because my PC can play any game (that I'm interested in anyway) that comes out on XBOX or Playstation, except for Bloodborn. So there's not really any point in me buying either of those consoles when I can just open up Steam and find most of the same offerings. The Nintendo Switch however, has plenty of First Party titles that I can't get on my PC, so it's really the only other console that I need.
    Plus, the Switch and the PC satisfy different niches. My PC is for going into my office and playing, while my Switch is for taking with me to other rooms in the house, or sitting in bed, etc. This way, they don't have to compete for my attention the same way a PC and a PlayStation would since they're both 'sit down and play' kind of consoles.

    Once upon a time I really wanted a PS5, partly because I never really treated myself to the latest console. When trying to get one with missed opportunities, a family member got a Nintendo Switch Oled and sent it to me because another family member due for the present obtained one. While the desire may still be there, it is so slight that it is negligible for the reasons you mentioned. Plus, with as many titles that I purchased on the Switch (mostly on sale), I could have bought a PS5. But similar to the PS2 back then, I am interested in the greater volume of the console's catalog. New Switch 2 or none, I can keep playing my Oled for as long as it works. So, besides the fact that I may have to upgrade my (I think) 7-year-old gaming laptop, I do not know what other game consoles are doing outside of the Switch. I used to buy games on Steam 10 years ago. But after they started discontinuing their client for older operating systems without giving a "limited" offline variant for games released for these operating systems, I realized that I would need to keep upgrading my pc in order to keep access to my games. I'm an adult with kids now and I may not have the disposable income to keep upgrading my gaming pc every x years. Another problem is that companies can revoke access to games at any time or do things like change the music because a license has expired. I have personally been burned by the Assassin's Creed III DLC on pc.
    Gaming consoles right now still offer physical games. So even when the server goes down, I will still be able to play the games I bought. I also try to jailbreak every console I own in order to backup my games in case of bit rot later and am looking for buying a few spares for the consoles I really like. At least then I remain in control over the content I purchased with my hard-earned money. So yeah, for me consoles right now symbolize ownership for me, and I suppose for a lot of people. So that's why the $500 price tag could still be worth it.
    Things change once physical games are phased out though. At that point, I wouldn't spend a dime on these closed platforms any more. At that point it's probably better to go for a pc and make sure to also download a pirated copy for every game you purchased. Companies like Ubisoft want to take out the concept of "ownership" out of the equation entirely. (at which point I feel they should no longer be allowed to use terms like "buy/purchase" on their stores. But rather "rent", but that's another story). But I won't accept that.

      And allowing you to run games on linux is a pretty fair deal, like you shouldn't be using a 10 year old OS connected to the internet
      Windows 7 is like 17 years old now
      Also you could switch to linux if you want to keep using old hardware

    14:05 I know Splatoon 3 didn't change that much (especially at launch), but comparing it to Overwatch 1 and 2 is pretty insulting. Splatoon 3 was a genuine improvement in almost every way, it didn't remove features or add in monetization no one asked for like Overwatch 2 did. It didn't launch missing the flagship feature that was meant to sell the game only to cancel said feature later, and most importantly it didn't replace the previous game, you can still play Splatoon 2 if you wanted. Hell, you were even able to play Splatoon 1 for years after Overwatch 1 was gone.

    I'm admittedly a lapsed Nintendo fanboy. I'm PC-only right now, but I grew up with the N64 & always rooted for Nintendo.
    So my opinion on the matter is definitely biased, but I'm glad to see someone talking about how underwhelming PS exclusives feel these days. They have the high production values & cool stories, but they're all so formulaic at this point. Sometimes it seems like they're made to "wow" the critics & get the fanboys beefing online, but the gameplay lacks the complexity of the narratives.
    I used to just ignore Xbox, but since getting Game Pass on PC, I'm finding myself more & more engaged in their games now. I think it's the variety that I'm enjoying most, or maybe it's that it's all new to me. I never thought two of my most anticipated games would be a first person Indiana Jones & a freaking 4x strategy game like ARA, but here we are.
    But I know I'm in the minority, and fans want more 3rd person, narrative-driven, flashy visual games. To an extent, I do too. I REALLY want to try Ghosts of Tsushima when it comes to PC. That game has always looked cool to me. Aside from that, I mostly look forward to Switch 2 & future Nintendo titles, though.
    I'll be there day 1 for Metroid Prime 4. I'll buy 18 copies of a new F-Zero. Throw me a Majora's Mask HD remake & I'd die of happiness. So I'm just as guilty of being a closet fanboy too, even if PC is my preferred way to play these days.

    The switch proved that Nintendo can stay relevant in the post wii/smartphone era. Not only can it go toe toe with Playstation and xbox, but it can be one of the best-selling systems of all time despite coming off their worst selling system (minus the virtual boy). The switch was smart releasing in the middle of the 8th generation cycle so it was able to bulid a fanbase from the ground up and bring back those gamers who left Nintendo in the 90s and 00s plus being a handheld made it more appealing.

  • @ShadwSonic
    @ShadwSonic 5 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

    The principle I always used when deciding on if I should be looking into a console was this: can I note ten different games that I would gain access to if I got this system, including future releases?
    The only Nintendo home console I ever thought had failed that metric was Gamecube, and its library was opened up to me with the Wii anyway. Even the Wii U succeeded by that metric at the time (mostly the games that got remade later), and even then the Switch definitely met that mark.
    In contrast, the only Microsoft console to do the same was the 360, riding off of games like Meat Boy or Unleashed. PC gaming wasn't exactly "easy to research" just yet, so even the cases that were on Steam counted... and even then, Banjo was a contributor too.
    As for Sony, it kept its own quality from PS2 (even without PS1 compatibility, which was a great bonus for a kid that could only get a console per generation) into the PS3 and PS4 days, but PS5? I only saw two games I was interested in at the start. One was the pack-in game, and the other was the new Ratchet.
    Which is now on Steam.

    I really like my Switch Lite, but I have not actually picked it up in weeks. I have lately been grabbing my phone or even my Razer Edge over the Switch and playing games off the Play Store. To be honest, this may just be because I work nights and mobile games lately are the easiest things to pick up and fit into my schedule. Beyond that mobile has really started to pick up the pace in technology to where games are getting to be comparable to what I could be playing on a Switch, Wuthering Waves just released and that's a full open world game. Ubisoft is working on a full Division release for mobile etc.
    Maybe I'll come back around to my Switch sooner or later but for now I've been happy to play AFK Journey or even squeeze a few quick games of Mech Arena or LoL Wild Rift or even some dailies in Raid in between going about my daily routine.

    Nintendo has the most sustainable business model. Going lower-tech and lower-spec was the smart play. Nintendo is one of the only companies that realizes they make video games... not "technology". GAMES. Sony has completely lost this perspective, and I'm not sure that Microsoft ever had this perspective.
    Nintendo is the last REAL game maker around that happens to also make consoles.
    I think Nintendo has seen this coming for a long time. With age comes experience, and this company has seen many adversaries rise and fall. Nintendo saw their competitors promising better and better production to the point where there is no return on investment and only their frail fundamental IP to justify hardware. Now the third parties are fleeing and afraid of partnering.
    Nintendo have been playing the long game and it has paid off in spades.
    Nintendo thrives in limitations it allows for more creativity
    Sometimes too much freedom means no direction
    But within a limitation you can challenge yourself how to be flexible within it like a fun puzzle you experiment with
    PEOPLE NEED TO STOP GIVING A DAMN ABOUT GRAPHICS
    IF YOU WANT GOOD GRAPHICS WITH REALISTIC TEXTURES GO OUTSIDE AND HUG A TREE
    NINTENDO WAS SMART AND REALIZED WHAT EVERYONE ELSE
    IS TOO SLOW TO
    Nintendo realised long ago that competing in graphics is pointless. No matter how powerful your console is, in a couple of years it is going to be obsolete, and anybody who really cares about graphics is going to buy a PC, because that is where the best graphics are.
    Instead, Nintendo focuses on their strengths:
    * Nintendo likes hardware gimmicks, because it makes their console stand out. Nobody bought a Wii because it had the prettiest graphics, they bought a Wii because they wanted to play with the motion controls (An idea so good both the “superior” PS3 and Xbox 360 tried to copy it). The same thing is happening with the Switch: people are buying it because they can play their games anywhere, and can move between a handheld and a home console. They like to focus on giving customers something that they cannot get anywhere else.
    * When Nintendo did try to compete on power, they didn’t do very well. The N64 and Gamecube were the most powerful consoles of their generations, but were both massively outsold by the “inferior” PS1 and PS2. The Wii was the weakest of its generation, but outsold the PS3 and Xbox 360. This proves Nintendo’s approach to console design clearly has something going for it.
    * Performance is expensive. Performance is even more expensive when you are using it in niche applications. If Nintendo wanted to have something as powerful as an Xbox One or PS4, while still being portable, then it would probably cost twice as much. This means that Nintendo would have to charge more for the console (probably not something the market could sustain) and/or eat a hefty loss on each console sold. Instead, by not focusing on performance, Nintendo make a profit on each console, and keep it at a price point where more people can afford it.
    * One of Nintendo’s biggest strengths is their first party titles, all of which rely on stylised graphics and strong art-style. It doesn’t matter that the console is not very powerful when Pokémon, Zelda, Mario (and its millions of spin offs), Smash Bros, Metroid and Donkey Kong are incredibly popular and all don’t care about high end graphics. Why make your console more expensive to make and develop for when you don’t even need it?
    * The companies that tend to focus on graphics are third party developers, such as EA, Activision, and Rockstar. If the console sells well (like the Switch currently is), then those developers will find a way to bring their games to it or, failing that, make unique games that work best on the hardware.
    * By not competing with the other consoles, or PCs, in terms of power, while offering unique gaming experiences, Nintendo has comfortably found a niche as an optional second system. If you have a PC, PS4 or Xbox One you have very little reason to buy one of the others, because they are all basically the same. Nintendo’s consoles offer things that none of the others offer, and thus can easily tempt people with another gaming device into purchasing it.
    * Nintendo has also found a strong market in all ages These people don’t care about graphics, so why waste money on giving them something that they don’t want? An families don’t care that the Switch doesn’t have the best looking games, they’re just happy that they can have fun
    Ever since the Wii era Nintendo has. Been trying to train us that power doesn’t matter
    Whimsy and imagination and creativity and memorable experiences are more important to them
    And y’all still aren’t getting it
    Move on from Power
    it don’t matter
    Nintendo doesn’t want it
    They think it’s boring
    They don’t care
    Official quote from iwata: "Even when we were going to launch the Wii system, there were a lot of voice saying 'Nintendo should stop making hardware'," Iwata recalled, talking to Gamasutra.
    "The reasoning behind that was Nintendo would not have any chance against Microsoft and Sony. The fact of the matter was: I did not think Nintendo should compete against these companies with the same message and same entertainment options for people.
    "We have not changed our strategy," he added. "In other words, we just do not care what kind of 'more beef' console Microsoft and Sony might produce in 2013. Our focus is on how we can make our new console different than [others]."
    The switch is faithful to iwata’s legacy
    .

    I haven't seen the video yet, but here are my thoughts before watching it:
    Nintendo was always more consistently strong in the handheld market whereas they were up and down in the console market ever since N64. In fact, they've actually been more down than up and aside from the Wii it was really the GBA, DS, and 3DS that kept Nintendo going strong until Switch (N64, Gamecube, and Wii U were all effectively flops). But by combining the portable and console markets, they managed to corner both and kill two birds with one stone.
    Meanwhile, Playstation and Xbox keep losing their uniqueness with all of the multiplatform titles and timed exclusives. If you own a PC, it hardly seems worth it to own a Playstation or Xbox aside from moving over your digital titles from the previous console generation. Switch on the other hand has a lot of unique titles to offer that will never be on PC outside of unofficial means.
    The sad thing is that Nintendo hasn't really gotten better so much as Playstation and Xbox have gotten much worse. I don't think the Switch library, in terms of original or exclusive titles, is anywhere near Nintendo's best ever. Freaking half of them are just Wii U ports that Nintendo added some tiny upgrade to and then resold at full price. But since PS5's library for example is mostly just remasters, remakes, and some good games that you can also get on PC or Xbox (or PS4, ha), there's no real competition.
    That's also why Nintendo has been able to greedily get away with not having any player's choice or selects line for a 7 year old console. I think that maybe when Switch 2 comes out is when they'll finally drop games like Super Mario Odyssey to a msrp of 20 or 30 bucks, the weasels. Though who knows, because when the Wii U online shop was about to close, Nintendo still didn't put a discount on almost any of their games. Without serious competition, there's no pressure to.
    Edit: Now that I've seen the vid, I don't think we'd disagree on much regarding this topic. If I'm harder on the Switch than you are it's because I experienced the heyday of NES and SNES, so I've seen Nintendo have more memorable first party offerings (and better third party exclusives) on their consoles that weren't repackaged past gen titles like Mario Kart 8 "Deluxe" and Zelda BOTW are (and I really enjoyed BOTW, but that is an original Wii U title designed for Wii U hardware; it's not an original Switch title).
    Where Switch introduced ARMs and apparently a few other IPs I'm not aware of, the SNES introduced Mario Kart, F-Zero, Starfox, Pilotwings, Donkey Kong Country, the first Mario RPG and so forth. NES introduced Mario, Zelda, Metroid, Fire Emblem, Mother (Earthbound Zero), and so forth. It's a tough legacy to live up to, but that's what I judge the Switch against historically, not just against the pitiful PS5 and Xbox series X.

I have no interest in setting up a PC on my TV not do I want to play most games at a desk. I like being on my couch. So Xbox gives me options and allows me to continue games on my PC, console, or portable gaming system (I have an ROG Ally). Xbox does have an advantage due to that versatility and that at least sets it apart from Sony. Nintendo also adds a different kind of portability.
    But I agree 100% that Nintendo is the one that gets it. They know why we game. Graphics are good enough on Switch. It’s the gameplay and the experience.

    This, this is exactly what I’ve been saying for years. If all your 1st party games aren’t exclusive to your system and coming to PC, which will also have your main competition’s 1st party games, then why not just get a PC? There is absolutely no incentive to own a PS or Xbox (I kinda wish this specific question was asked to CEOs “If all your 1st party games go to PC, and you can play other games there you can’t with your console, what’s the point of buying your console?”
    Imo, 1st party games should be exclusives, give people a reason to buy your console. 3rd party games should reach as wide an audience as possible and should be multiplat (unless using a 1st party IP, think Mario & Rabbids as an example of that). I think maybe offer console exclusive content is fine to differentiate versions, nothing that breaks games but things fans of that console ecosystem would appreciate. (Think Soul Calibur II) If you’re insistent on bringing your big budget 1st party games to other platforms, then you gotta give people who own your console’s version a better version; either exclusive DLC or something

    I think another thing that is important to mention is that the Switch is the ONLY portable console other than phones. It is the most accessible console, the most versatile, the one you can literally play anywhere. It really is only limited by power and whatever games it's releasing (which so far this year, isn't a lot.) My guess is XBox, if they do something BIG, will fizzle out within the next decade. Game Pass is their best weapon but as you mentioned, it's also on PC. Thee is very little reason to get an XBox. PlayStation I think will still be in the market for a while because of their legacy but they also need to change things up and focus on something that evolves gaming and take a risk. See, Nintendo stands out from the rest because Nintendo is willing to be ballsy, sometimes to a fault. But, they also know they can't sell the same thing forever. PlayStation's haptic feedback is cool, but it's more like a gimmick (or so it seems, I don't own a PS5) and is just 'cool'. But that's it. Otherwise, it's just a more powerful PS4. I don't think people bought the PS5 because of a little extra immersion. Mainly, it was the games, and the power. That's it. I guess that's obvious but it's still worth pointing out. I'm very curious as to what Nintendo's next move is as it sounds like the next console is coming out quite soon and I wonder how they'll innovate this time. Personally, and ironically, I want their next console to be at least as powerful as the PS4/XBox One because that way, other developers don't have to downscale their games nearly as much or just fell they can't release their games on switch (2) at all. Imagine playing ELDEN RING on switch. Okay maybe that's not super revolutionary, but if they were able to improve the power as well as their internet services, AND it's a portable console, they'd fucking DUMPSTER the other consoles. Personally, I don't think they'll go that far as that's not the company they are, but it would be IMO, awesome. Obviously I'd also want (and expect) some new revolutionary mechanics that add to the console, but I think, with all the money they've made from the switch, becoming the BIGGEST company in Japan, if they put lots of tech into making the next console much more powerful as well as innovative, they will have not only won the console wars, but they will utterly annihilate the competition. Ik, dramatic, yada yada. But honestly, they are in the best position right now. With them investing not only in games, but movies and theme parks, they are dominating the competition. Anyways, that was a long ass rant. Hope ya'll are having a nice day!

      What about steam deck?

    • @lightningquiz7924

      @@razorblade413 True I forgot about Steam Deck, but comparatively to the Switch has only sold a couple million compared to the 140 million that the Switch has sold. The Steam Deck tends to learn more on the hardcore gaming aspect and it technically more niche since it's about having the ability to play games portable rather than being able to play them at all. It seems that a lot of people are happy to play Steam games on PC. Steam isn't going to rock the boat super hard with the Steam Deck, it's more like a side gig. I don't know what Steam's plan is for the future but I don't think their entering the console wars but they are more so just working in the background quietly to make a little extra profit. Since they don't make games as much compared to Nintendo, they can't really use their hardware to also promote their games except for raw power. They can't introduce motion controls for example because that wouldn't make sense if these games are to also be played on PC. This doesn't mean I'm not curious or support the idea of the Steam Deck. I just think that they aren't trying to win or compete, they are just trying to find a new way to make money. Personally I am interested in getting one but they are expensive and I'm in college, so probably won't for a while. ANyways, have a nice day!

    I have just now realised, that nintendo has a weird console cycle:
    Release new and innovative console with lacking hardware -> people like that console. Make a newer more optimizer version of that console -> repeat
    It has been like that for ages now! eg:
    Game boy, game boy colour, game boy advanved
    NES -> SNES
    DS -> 2DS -> 3DS
    Wii -> WiiU
    Switch -> Switch 2
    Probably the more interesting system

    Honestly, up until recently the only reason i was still interesting in eventually owning a ps5 is because i am a Kingdom hearts/final fantasy fan, and for kingdom hearts especially, i want to be able to play the next game day 1. However, with Square ending their exclusivity deal with sony, there will probably be no reason for me to get a ps5/6.
    As much as i love owning physical games, there's just no justification for me to drop $600+ CAD on a console that i will maybe use for 2-3 games that i could just get on pc without spending the extra few hundred

    Daily reminder that people see the Wii U as a failure and that was a console with unique features and a stacked library of games. Meanwhile XBomberguy and StayPlaytion are trying to convince people to buy their 4K graphics machine for all 2 new games it runs.

    • @zadock6370
      @zadock6370 17 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

      actually, the wii U hardly had any real interesting games. the types of games people buy a console for are just not there for the wii U. what they got? mario 3d world, breath of the wild, pikman 3? bayonetta 2? that's really about it. no kirby games. no metroid games. even the mario game for that console wasn't a super heavy hitter like galaxy or odessy was. an breath of the wild? that came out at the end of the wii U's life, by that point it is too late.
      oh, forgot they had mario maker, too. and donkey kong country tropical freeze. point still stands tho. lackluster library of games compared to the wii and switch.

      @@zadock6370 You're forgetting one crucial thing: backward compatibility. While yes, it's not really a feature to convince Wii users to purchase a Wii U, it greatly extends the library of games on the Wii U, making it practically a Wii with way more games and HD.
      And how could you forget about the Wii U launch title Nintendo Land? That was literally the best party game Nintendo EPD 4 has ever created.

    • @zadock6370
      @zadock6370 8 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา +1

      @@TicTacToeCraft with as many wii's that nintendo sold, if someone is even thinking about buying a wii U, they likely already have a wii. so backwards compatibility wouldn't be much of a selling point there unless someone doeasn't already have a wii, which would be the minority of the target audience. not saying that backwards compatibility is bad, but in that case it plays less of a role due to the amount of wii's sold.
      while nintendo land was probably really great, I wouldn't see that so much as the "I gotta buy the console so I can play nintendo land". and while I probably forgot a few "must have" games for the wii U, the list would still be significantly smaller and less "IIII NNEEEEDDD IIITTTT" than that of the wii and switch.
      my personal library of games for the wii U is much smaller than what I have for the wii, switch, and ds. in fact, the only games that really made me buy a wii U is mario maker and sonic lost world (I'm a big sonic fan). nothing else really stood out to me as exclusives for the wii U.
      the console is neat and fun, don't get me wrong, but compared to the wii and switch, it's lackluster

    Honestly you forgot the most important thing about switch: you can take it anywhere!
    I can get a switch emulator and play on my PC, but i can’t play it anywhere. I definitely can’t do the same with Xbox or PS5 (though they’re trying to but not the same imo). That being said I’m a PC gamer and other than a few select games on switch, there’s not enough for me to want to spend money on the console (Metroid dread, Mario wonder, Mario oddysey, smash, Mario rpg remake, and that’s probably it). I don’t play games too often either much less Nintendo games. It can’t justify the cost of a console for me.

    You can't sell game boxes without banger exclusives. Sony and Microsoft are leaving the game box business and are more or less going 3rd party. Sony is gonna have a problem but Microsoft is set up well with all their newly acquired IPs to thrive as a 3rd party publisher.

    I will say if you’re buying exclusively for games, a PS5 or an xbox series S/X are much cheaper than a computer with their level of power, and they have the advantage(especially PlayStation) of selling physical games so you can look for discounts on every store, new or used, compared to just the one digital store which is not as reliable either, and xbox has the gamepass which is just an insanely good deal, plus the fact they come with a controller compared to buying a keyboard, mouse and possibly a controller separately on PC, or the fact they are just so much simpler and more intuitive, that I think the big two consoles are a much better deal for gaming than a pc, unless you are someone who likes moding stuff both software and hardware, or need a high end pc for other stuff besides gaming

    And that's why I enjoy Nintendo. I enjoy the gimmicks and their exclusivity is the reason to justify the money. But im also a guy who enjoys when things work out of the box and enjoys experimenting. I own a PS5 for the sole reason to play Gran Turismo 7 with my rig as it plays out of the box with VR support. But I also own a PC to have a sandbox environment for coding and reverse engineering games.
