We're breaking the beloved Nintendo 64 3D platformer up into three sections/discussions, with this one covering everything up through the first Bowser fight. So in this discussion we talk about Mario's move-set, the camera, the castle, Bob-omb Battlefield, Whomp's Fortress, Jolly Roger Bay, Cool, Cool Mountain, and Big Boo's Haunt. Even though we're all playing Super Mario 64 on the Nintendo Switch with the Super Mario 3D All-Stars edition, you're welcome to play along on the Nintendo DS, virtual console, or the original Nintendo 64. The line spoken when Bowser is being thrown while fighting him was changed back in 1997 with the re-release of Super Mario 64 known as "Super Mario 64: Shindou pack taiou version" (or SM64 Rumble Pack Compatible version). This version added rumble support and added all the additional changes from the US version of SM64, and was Japan exclusive until this collection.
It's inferred that the line change to "Buh-bye!" was made due to Bowser being known as Koopa in Japan.

I think maybe some people who got eerie vibes from SM64 were creeped out by the emptiness of the castle, with the echo-y sounds of Mario's steps/voice permeating as he is all but alone in an abandoned castle cursed by Bowser. Toad is kinda there but I often forgot about him.
I've searched multiple sources across the internet on how to pronounce Epona and they all agree with Hanson
I also heard this is based on a re-release version that came out in Japan called the Shindou edition that included rumble support and a few glitch fixes and also accounts for some of the dialogue changes like the absence of the iconic "so long king bowser" line
47:28: The award for best sleeping character in a video game goes to: the narcoleptic cavemen from Artdink's caveman sim: "Tail of the Sun"(PS1) with their seemingly random, intermittent face plants and subsequent slides down a giant mountain or off a steep cliff into an icy ocean grave, if not the mouth of a local predator. (i love this game! The running mechanic was taken from their earlier game: "A-Train" and is quite interesting when used in the context of a caveman speeding about his primitive world. The sleeping mechanic was actually different in the Japanese version, where you weren't able to force your character to wake up by spamming a button.)

Yeah, 'Through the Looking Glass' would be a similar example. I'd imagine the fantasy of being transported into another world via a photograph, painting, or reflection is something that's existed since the stone age.

Some corrections/comments:
The "so long gay/king Bowser" line change is due to this being a port of a rereleased version in Japan (hence the 1996 AND 1997 copyright at the bottom on the pre-title screen). This version got rid of glitches such as the backwards long jump, so I'm sure speedrunners hate this version. The line itself was changed supposedly because no one knew what a "Bowser" was in Japan, since he's known as King Koopa.
Hanson, in Cool Cool Mountain, there is a ski lift to get to the little island you were talking about with the bob-bomb and red coin. You just have to go to the bottom area where the big penguin is at and take the ski lift up. However, the jump is STILL awkward and I died just trying to jump from the ski lift because of the rope in the way. Some things in this game really have aged terribly.
The line with the typo that Ana is referring to is a line spoken after collecting all 120 stars, and it is indeed still typo'd.
*SPOILERS* FOR A SUPER OLD GAME: The line is from Yoshi. "Mario, IT that really you!?" I have no idea why they still didn't fix it in either this original 97 rerelease or in this port of that release, but it is pretty iconic at this point.

I've been playing 3d all stars since it came out..been jumping around. First time playing sunshine and galaxy.. sunshine is frustrating but i like it and galaxy is just like everyone says... amazing
By default Likitu is filming you but if you absolutely need the camera to follow Mario you can push L and the camera will be locked to directly behind Mario.
As far as Mario's movement, they haven't changed it, it's just that while Mario is running he has big sweeping turns, and when he's moving slowly he turns on a dime, but when you try to run in a quick 180 if you do so while Mario is accelerating he will move in a wide semicircle, but if you are light on the stick he will 180 on a dime.
And on sunshine in the rare occasion where the camera gets stuck on a wall you can push ZL and it will shift the camera into the wall and you will regain controll of it.
The stupid thing I do all the time to jump in a painting is a backflip... I’m not entering a painting in Mario 64 without a backflip :)
Sure a full remake would be great, but still got so into this again, brought back great memories, but it holds up and is a ton of fun today. The camera issues mostly effected me in the later stages, and going for all 120 stars. I wasn't stopping after the first Bowser fight. 😆
If you're feeling cheeky, you can kill whomps and the king whomp by doing a butt stomp as they attempt to crash down on you. While you're doing the midair spin, you have no hitbox, so they will slam through you and you will land immediately on their back with the stomp. Very satisfying and pretty easy to pull off.
Ana brought up a good point. My playthrough I did was 70 stars and I only did the levels I love and avoided the ones I dont like the plague. It really holds up in playability and fun for me

@30:00 glad others pointed this out, the version of Mario 64 on 3D Allstars seems to be more "loose" with controls, than OG Mario 64.
I think Bullet Bills were also in the Tiny Giant world or whatever that stage was called.

I never beat Mario 64 or got close to 120 stars but I remember playing the first few stages a lot. My sister probably beat it multiple times. She was a master at N64 and PS1 era platformers.

I totally get what that guy is saying about the 180 move. Trying to turn around in a delicate situation most of the time has a turn radius like a car. Very frustrating haha.

Just an FYI. Watching the video at the 20:00 mark where you're going up the hill, if you go into the cave/alcove on the way up the hill, walk to the back and just stand there for like 3 seconds and you will be teleported to the top.

Regarding the music: Bob-omb battlefield, Slide, and Cool Cool Mountain all share the same musical motif/melody. Unsure if it's the same key, but major differences are the arrangement and timing. Only figured this out in the last year.
Hey Hanson, just so you know, you CAN put the camera behind Mario on the 64 version. If you’re playing the switch version, you press right bumper to zoom the camera right behind Mario’s head. Then to zoom it back out press down on the right analog stick.
The camera will now follow behind Mario instead of the Lakitu camera. It’s useful for parts like where you need to walk along a long and narrow plank that’s at an angle. To go back to the regular camera hit right bumper again
That's still an incredibly clunky solution.
Andrew Burnes It’s 100% clunky. I just remember hearing about it a couple years back and I never knew as a child. It’s only useful in a couple of situations
Didn't the DS version like completely fix the camera?

I'm at 33, but I am not getting all stars. Now we about to start all basement I'm just doing maybe get half of the stars of each world if not just enough to get to next part of the castle.
I already did my yearly Mario64 run this year. By that I mean every year I play my N64 still where I try to work through the "main story" of Mario64, Paper Mario, Zelda OOT/MM, Banjo1&2, and PokemonSnap.

While I will continue to watch this deepest dive series I am not going to continue playing Mario 64. Never had any history with it and I just cant enjoy the game. The camera is pure shit lol. Moving onto sunshine now.
People keep saying how "important" (impactful/influential?) Mario64 was, but that always seems to be asserted without further debate. Was it important to the genre of 3D platformers? Sure, but that genre was largely irrelevant to gaming outside the context of Mario and Nintendo. Was it important to the N64 and its launch? Of course, but that console also wasn't very successful and basically marked Nintendo's departure from their position of leadership in the industry and overall cultural mindshare/zeitgeist. I honestly think if you erased Mario64 from history that the general trajectory and evolution of game design wouldn't have changed very much.
i think it's easy to look it up and find a decent discussion about it. maybe try looking up interviews with game devs about mario64. although if you were trying to take a jab at how they always say that the deepest dive is the most thorough discussion about games on the internet then you should know we're only here for BEST FRIEND RONNIE
