Great discussion! Very thorough and covered almost all of my favorites. (Shoutout to Suriel for repping Advance Wars). Only game I would want to add is Banjo Tooie for 2000.
Also I'm in the 2007 club for best year. Just Halo 3 and Orange Box alone beats most other years.

This episode made me so happy it felt so much like the old gi days with replay/gi podcast.
My favorite games of the 2000s. Champions of Norrath, Gran Turismo 4, Bioshock, F.E.A.R., Saboteur, the Darkness, Fallout 3, Far Cry 2, Wolfenstein 09, Tiger Woods 2005, Test Drive Unlimited. Was Midnight Club L.A. in 09? That would be in there too. There may be more but i am not in front of my collection right now.
One hundred percent agree with Kyle on the ending of MGS2. Completely mind blowing for me at the time.

I was taught that e.g. meant "for example," I've always heard people read it aloud as such. I'm from California and have never heard of a "golden birthday." It was cool to see Dan on the show, such a unique dude.

Hey JeffM, I'm a Morrowind man myself, and just in case you have a Xbox One X setup, its an enhanced title. The Xbox one X enhanced versions of original Xbox games look incredible, its no gimmick. There's only so much that can be done for Morrowind, but its the ultimate console version (Faster loading, better gfx etc).
It's fascinating to me that not a single one of the MinnMax crew knew about the Bon Appetit youtube channel, given how it (to me) seems like it's been one of the biggest things on the internet for the last year or so. I guess it's a pretty bracing example of how atomised the landscape has become, that four people whose job it is to observe the culture have no clue about this phenomenon. Not a slight on the MinnMax lads, it's just really interesting. The episode overall was dingdang amazing; I had an absolute blast watching y'all hang out with Dan. One of my favourite eps so far!
@MinnMaxShow I also thought it was neat that Cam Clarke voiced Kratos in Tales of Symphonia! He has such a cool and distinctive voice. He wasn't doing a lot of video game stuff for awhile, but did you know he's the voice of Corrin in Smash Bros? (and I guess all the Fire Emblems he's in)

It'll be exciting to see what happens in this discussion. I've been replaying some of my PS2 greats that I never beat at the time, having a lot of fun with that. Just finally beat the original God of War for the first time the other day :)
Its good to hear Dan talk about games without people having a go at him all the time like on giant bomb, The giantbeast cast was good but I feel like all the other hosts apart from Dan were super jaded about games and would always make fun of Dan for nerding out about games...on a games podcast. So this is refreshing.
I never watched any of his (or at all) Giant Bomb stuff. I have no idea what being jaded means (sorry i am dumb) but i like Ryckert's enthusiasm towards games.
Is Dan Confusing MK Deadly Alliance with Soul Calibur 2? Because every reference he made was Soul Calibur I.e. Yoshimitsu’s pogo stick stance and Voldo’s crab walk stance. Also Hanson you were right, Reptile had the Crab stance is DA and it completely cleaned up shop once you figured out some combos.

Hell yea, GTA4 all the way! I think Niko is the strongest protagonist they've created. I recently went back to capture footage for my show (Ep 2, Question 9) and ended up playing through the entire game again, was just too fun.
I just recently played through it, and it's my favorite GTA. We probably will never see a GTA like it ever again.

I feel like World at War was kinda glossed over but for me the zombie mode was a college staple like Guitar Hero for Ben or Halo 2 for Kyle. Were none of y'all big zombie mode fans at the time?
The game itself is glossed over that people forget that’s where Zombie mode started. Basically everyone only bought the game just to unlock that game
Morrowind was amazing. Skyrim was my first TES game so I couldn’t put Morrowind for 02 but TES really showed me how amazing gaming can get.
Metroid Prime. Best game of the decade and still the best game I have ever played (though Dark Souls came close to dethroning it).
I really hope they bring the trilogy to Switch. Metroid Prime is so consistently good every time I go back to it. That game nailed the concept of atmosphere and is one of, if not the most, successful transitions from 2D to 3D for a franchise. It's a shame Prime was followed up by Other M, a game so bad it literally sent me into a depressive episode while playing it.
It's a shame it hasn't aged well.
Any thoughts on creating an official MinnMax forum/message board to supplement the official Discord? There's many topics that work better on a message board than Discord. Creating and sharing our top lists with other community members is a good example.
Shadow of the Colossus is easily my top game of all time. That game is a masterpiece.
The original sucked. The remake is great.
Bayonetta came out January 2010. I know because it's one of my favorite months in gaming as Bayonetta, Darksiders, which were both unexpectedly good, were then followed by one of the great games of all time, in Mass Effect 2. I was working at Gamestop then and was over the moon the whole month.
2005 incredibly hard choice for me between RE4 and SotC. There’s also DMC3 as well, but as much as I love it, there are other character action games that I prefer over it.

If a game has a a realease in different years how would you put it in a best of decade? For example i bought Car Mechanic Simulator on its release in 2019 for console but on PC for 2018. Then Terminator Resistance came out on PC everywhere and console europe in 2019 but i got it when it relased on console in usa in 2020.
Bully is really an amazing game. Would love to see it remastered. I remember playing that as a kid and having my mom appalled by the violence because I was kicking a student that was lying on the ground repeatedly to unlock something. Glad she never saw Mortal Kombat, which I played almost exclusively in arcades haha.
Now this episode is pod racing. Glad to hear some of my favorites getting shoutouts.
I've never played any Metal Gear game except a few minutes of 5 on a friend's PlayStation, but I just finished installing MGS 1 on my PS3 as your discussion on the games of the decade concluded. IN I GO.

I've been thinking about this for a few hours now and I want to change my statement a bit. Judging Game of the Decade from the perspective of looking at gaming in 2000, and gaming again in 2009 asking how has gaming changed? I think the contenders should be Halo 3 for my previous reasons of it being the game that brought online play to the masses, it playing incredibly well and this may not be the most important point but it was the biggest entertainment launch of all time in 2007. And the other contender should be Wii Sports, for being the start of the revolution of games designed for people who aren't gamers.

I think it's telling that Ben, Kyle, Dan and Suriel debate for 10 minutes giving game of the decade to MGS 2 or MGS 3, and no one at any point mentions gameplay, only talking about story and story twists. For me gameplay and the game being fun trumps all other factors, and therefore I would give Resident Evil 4 the game of the decade. With Mario Galaxy or one of the Halos being runner up. Personally I would lean towards Halo 3 over the other two because that was my first introduction to online games and I think that was the case for a lot of people. Xbox live did exist for the original xbox but not until it's tail end, and PC gaming obviously had online play for many years but those had vey niche followings. The Xbox 360 brought online games to the masses, at a time where home internet was commonplace enough and fast enough to actually support it.
I have to go with Code Veronica over Majora's Mask for 2000, both very different from what was right before them. Hope there is a RE:CV remake like Resident Evil 2 and 3 the last couple of years. No one even talks about RE 3 remake anymore and it should have never been a $60 product.
Demon’s Souls missing from 2009. Hands down, the most influential game for the following decade.
Disagree and the way I present evidence is people always compare things to Dark Souls, not Demon. Demon was the little seed to everything. But nothing caught on till Dark Souls, and even then Dark Souls was a slow burn.
Can't deny the fact that Dark Souls was marketed and pushed the way it was solely due to the unexpected success of Demon's though
sincerly, Eric don’t disagree that Dark Souls is the one everybody compares to and is also my favorite of the Soulsborne games, but you can not deny that many of the core concepts from its challenging gameplay, level design, combat and asynchronous MP still came from Demon’s. The only exception would be the Dark’s interconnected world which no other game has yet to mimic. I’d say the only reason why people always compare things to Dark is because Demon’s was not widely played back then and Dark was most people’s first experience with the Soulsborne games.
Without Demon’s there would be no Dark.
Gross. Souls games are for losers.

I'm totally with Suriel on TWEWY being best on DS. I just can't get anyone to actually play it on there, lol.
Now this is a good decade. Probably the one I played the most games in, though there's still a lot of early stuff to go back to. As you'll see I've never touched a MGS game.

But it'll have to be Borderlands in the end!

I went back to FFXV after finishing FFVIIR and I think I enjoy FFXV more. I liked the world of XV more. The character banter is pretty good, VIIR made improvements on it. It just makes me sad that development was cut short and the much welcomed and needed character DLC was cancelled.
Something is wrong when it takes this long for them to mention Halo in 2001.

I would like to say although I've only played the original Majoras Mask, I watched a video by the youtuber Nerrel where he shows the many differences in the 3DS version, including mechanics and boss fights.
@Suriel’s GALOT: if you look at literally any tweet that Ed Boon Or the MK account posted one the past year, the replies are an incessant spam of people demanding Mileena like entitled babies. It was probably driving them insane. I’m sure this was a way to get back at those annoying fans who are never satisfied with any new additions Bc the character they like isn’t in it.
I'd never heard of a golden birthday until a few years ago. From hearing about it from other folks, I've come to the conclusion that golden birthdays are a rich kid thing. (Or at least a solidly middle-class family thing.) That would explain why knowledge of it defies regional definitions.

Game journos do it all the time. Some places (like game informer) do articles and videos titles "What we want from [Insert unannounced game sequel here]." I too, hate it when people who write about games and do videos about games try and tell developers what to do as if implementing their feedback is a small switch to be turned on and not the time and work of dozens of people. It paints a picture like they don't know how games are produced when in fact they should be the most knowledgeable outside of actual developers. I wish the folks at MinnMax would take their own advice on this.
