  • MinnMax's Ben Hanson, Suriel Vazquez, Leo Vader, and Jeff Marchiafava kick off their multi-part game club discussion of Cyberpunk 2077. In this discussion, which goes well beyond the average spoilercast or review, we unpack everything interesting in Act 1 of CD Projekt RED's new open-world RPG along with the MinnMax community on Patreon. Yes, we talk about the bugs and the unforgivable state this game was released in for Xbox One and PlayStation 4, but we also talk about the story, Jackie Welles as a character, and the gameplay systems so far. We'll be back in two weeks for the next discussion, covering side quests in Act 2. Submit a comment for us to read on The Deepest Dive and unlock the podcast version by supporting MinnMax on Patreon! / minnmax

    One funny thing if you play on a controller is also, that crouch and skip dialogue is the same button. So if you "crouch" into a cutscene you cannot stand up because it would skip the dialogue, so you have to sit on the floor watching the thing. lol XD

      This was really annoying but you could uncrouch by holding that button (B on Xbox, dunnow what it is on others)!

    Fun fact: the montage in the beginning is done 'in real time' in-engine, because it looks WAY better on my PC than on my console, but that sequence is a feat in itself when you consider how many 'cuts' occur in it.
    I def. wouldn't call this a "Bethesda style" open world, the game is very narrative focused, with a clear beginning middle and end, that takes place in an open world, it feels different, more like an open world Deus Ex game.

    • @MomoDojo
      @MomoDojo 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Yes this is evident by the fact that your character is shown in this montage and the model shown is the model you created. Crazy how they did this from a technical perspective.

      @@RANDHAWA117 Well maybe I and more people would be more forgiving if CDPR didn't engage in BLATANT misrepresentation of their product by not allowing reviewers access to the console versions or even allowed to show their own footage until after the game launched. That is part of the reason why CDPR I now being sued. I probably won't even pick up the proper PS5 version now because I don't even want to support CDPR after this fiasco.

      @@michaelp.3485 Well I for one will still support them cause I have not seen any gaming company till date with more consumer friendly practices such as free dlc, lower than normal prices as compared to other triple AAA games, etc. Have followed them since original Witcher days where they have just offered free enhanced editions to existing owners rather than milking them for Remastered editions. Not about to throw a tamtrum for one misstep. They are still an awesome developer in my book whose games maintain high bar for single player story telling despite being hundreds of hour long which is rarely the case with its contemporaries who pad content with filler missions.

    E3 2019 was the trailer where they said “this is just one way your story can play out” (paraphrasing). It was CG, V goes back to the no tell motel to meet dex and Tbug. V goes to clean himself up in the mirror and they show the flashback to Jackie dying in the delamaine cab. Then Dex orders his bodyguard to kill V, but V kills the bodyguard kills tbug and then kills dex. Just after that they show you waking up in the landfill to reveal Keanu, which is probably why you all forgot about it haha.
    It was still an awesome linear mission but it is a shame that none of those choices remained in the final game

    2:07:00 - TakeMURA, uses Dex to find V, Dex was visibly scared of Takemura before getting killed. You can hear Takemura talking to Yorinobu, basically saying: "Yes, I've found your fathers murderer, they appear to be alive". You pass out and wake up on the highway, with Arasaka commandos (not Maelstrom!) in pursuit of Takemua. Safe to assume, Yorinobu wanted to eliminate the only lving witness to his patricide, and get rid of Takemura who would likely find out the truth after interrogating V.

Short circuit is very good for this since it executes so quickly. I've also had amazing hacker duels, where me and the enemy kept hacking cameras and each other back and forth.

    I'm playing on a 3070 at home and a 970(2014 budget card) when I stay at my boyfriends and haven't had any major problems with the game breaking bugs, outside of the normal open world/witcher bugs where roach/your car will come to you through anything, cars floating off the ground etc.
    So far my main gripe with the game is that it's just not what I expected a big open world RPG by cdpr to be, I stayed out of trailers and promotion but I was still expecting something akin to Fallout: New Vegas, where 5+ playthroughs could be different in a noteworthy way, the origins might as well not be there after an hour, I can't imagine my second and third playthroughs will be more than a few decisions different.
    Also totally agree with whomever said hacking feels kinda just like magic more than hacking

      I think they did a good job of adapting the big Johnny Silverhand story in 2020. Basically in the original, Arasaka steal his girlfriend because she made the Soulkiller, the program that destroys people's brains, he goes to get her using the Rockstar classes special ability... rocking so hard that a giant crowd appears and does whatever he says. He puts on a concert right outside Arasaka, the mob destroys everything for him to get in, he finds the body of his girlfriend dead, but turns out her soul is still in the AI and he doesn't know, and she digitally screams as he walks away.

    I'm really happy with the game's performance so far. I only have a GTX 1080, but am able to run the game at a stable framerate on ultra settings in standard HD. No access to the DLSS or fancy ray tracing stuff, but I think those would tank my frame rate anyway on my older card. No crashes yet, and so far all the bugs have been funny rather than disruptive, with only a couple requiring a quicksave/quickload to clear. Really wish everyone was having a similar smooth experience.

  • @popblender
    @popblender 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Like Jeff, I am playing on the Xbox One X. I have had the game crash on me probably 15 to 20 times since launch day. I purchased a copy from Gamestop. I have a pretty fast internet connection, so getting the game downloaded was no issue. I haven't experienced many frame-rate problems, nor have I experienced bad load in textures. No T-posing or crazy car mechanics either. The game tends to crash exclusively if I'm driving fast during a heavily populated area of the city. If I take it slow, it's not a problem.
    Immediately after the initial cut-scenes and once I got into Night City, the game reminded me of Fallout New Vegas or Fallout 4's jankiness of character movement. The way you have to not quite line up items to loot them reminded me of the creation engine so much. Also, just the way the game operates, even the shooting mechanics, reminded me of Fallout 4. Overall, the character movement and driving didn't turn me off enough to not enjoy the prologue and game. I'm not a fan of the cursor on console UI though. It got a little old having to move my stick every time I paused to get what I needed sometimes. Of course, using the left and right shoulder buttons works, but it's not always the first thing I think about. I decided to spec my character towards hacking and reflexes, so I could use my mantis blades and monowire, as well as putting points into smart tech (I love smart guns!) and stamina, so I could become a lean, mean, be-heading machine!!
    As far as the story is concerned: I absolutely love it. Cut-scenes were rendered fine. I did encounter a bug where my character's arms phased through my body and in front of Dexter while we were sitting in his car having a conversation.That was about it for cut-scene problems. In open world, I did encounter issues with enemies not fighting me back after I initiated combat three or four times. I lucked out overall with the game from a bug perspective, other than the game crashes. Those didn't bother me much, as the game did load up pretty quick afterward. I did not enjoy getting so many notifications and phone calls while I was in the middle of a fight or finishing a quest, however.
    My biggest complaints with the game are the lack of description of mods and where they fit; the lack of ability to view weapons up close; no transmog for armor items, as many of the outfits I was forced to use (because of needing highest armor available) made me look like an absolute idiot in a game where style is so important; and not fully explaining many of the systems the game throws at you. I had many more problems with overall explanation than any gameplay or bug issues.
    The amount of dildos in the game was weird. It didn't bother me, really. It also didn't bother me that there was a lot of sexual content, either. The world is involving, interesting, and I thought was dressed up pretty damn cool IMO. Taking in the sights and sounds of Night City was super cool too. Driving around rather than fast traveling was my preferred option of seeing the map. Once you get outside the city, it is fun to ride a motorcycle and move the camera around and take in the landscape.The character creator was underwhelming, but the game is in first person, so it didn't matter to me. I am a man. Therefore, most of the time, I play as a man. And my outfits were silly when i did have to view them. But to have the best armor, sometimes you gotta wear a dress!!
    Dialogue choices were fine; nothing groundbreaking as far as open world games go. I don't understand why people think a developer is going to completely change the way choice and consequence plays out in video games. To me, Bethesda has been king of choice and consequence when it comes to game changing dialogue or character decisions. But, there is only so much a game can do considering just how many factors are involved in human thought, and the result of our choices in life. I did enjoy CDPR's approach to the game and what the overall scope of what they were trying to accomplish. Johnny Silverhand is a cool character, and I liked Keanu's performance. At least as far as the first act is concerned. We'll see how act 2 goes!
    As a whole, I am really enjoying the game, regardless of the hard crashes I have experienced. I understand the issues with the game most have had, and I have had some too. But, it hasn't diminished my excitement to play through and finish the entire game. Or, as much as I can until I get bored, or just plow through it. I enjoyed Witcher 3 more, but I feel as if Cyberpunk 2077 is a worthy follow-up. I just hate that CDPR has been so shady about console quality, and of course now, with the pulling of Devotion from the GOG store. It's been a bad week for them, but I am going to continue playing the game and blocking all of that stuff out of my mind. I could go on and on about the game here, but this is too long as it is! Thanks for the deep dive gents!! I'll keep on watching!!!

    I can’t believe the comment about the lack of “cyberpunk” lol This game is PURE (Pondsmith) Cyberpunk is the very best way. CDPR have done an amazing job at bringing Pondsmiths World to life.

      I played a lot of Cyberpunk 2020, and the fact that there's cyberpsychos in the game, but at no point does the player have to worry about it or humanity points and can just tech out as much as they want is a bummer and a big moral departure from the original.

    Some choices definitely matter. Early on in the quest where you retrieve the spider robot, if you do not kill the Mailstrome boss, he will show up in a later mission.

    Here's how I see it:
    CD PR talked it up as a Godfather
    People are describing it as a Carlito's Way
    We got a Scarface
    Fortunately for me I like all these movies, and this game.
    Manage your expectations (especially on consoles) and you'll never feel betrayed by a game that could never meet them.

    I like this game but having put in 20-30 hours its in pretttty rough shape even on my solid PC. The audio bugs in particular are pretty common and can really ruin a moment. i think they messed up releasing this early, on any platform. they worked soooo long and hard and its a shame that it turns there biggest moments into memes.

    So I played it on ps5. Finished it. The story and world is a 9 or 10/10. I adored it. Had me really hooked. The rest of the game should of been labeled Early Access performance wise. Had to fight the game to play and enjoy it.

    Sounds like you guys missed the hacking tutorial. I was Street Kid but during the combat tutorial in the BD starter before your first mission there’s 4 sections but they only require you to do 2 if I’m remembering correctly.

    As a big fan of Cyberpunk they really have done an incredible job of depicting this amazing universe that Pondsmith created. It’s so think with lore and detail and stays very true to the source material. I’d hate changes to this world based on certain 2020 world views.

    I think the hooks are finally in me, but the performance is so bad (PS5). The story seems good, but it also feels disjointed and oddly stitched together, all of which I can’t tell is intentional or not.

    I think consoles are in a weird place where they launch in 2013, run poorer than equivilent cost PC's at the time then for the next 7 years they have to pretend those machines can run games made in 2020 designed for modern PC's and 'next gen' consoles.
    This is all the while spitting out a playstation 4.5 just to continue playing games at 30fps.
    I get it, people with those consoles got fxcked over, but console makers should just stop pretending your crappy laptop from a decade ago will be able to run the latest greatest prettiest game.

    • @danielbishop2480
      @danielbishop2480 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don’t think that’s a good excuse. The base ps4 runs games like GOT, TLOU2 and RDR2 beautifully

    • @ChichiNaka
      @ChichiNaka 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@danielbishop2480 I'd probably argue that GoT/TLOU2/RDR2 are all doing vastly different things to cyberpunk, even first person riding through cities in RDR2 didn't get as hectic with lights and effects and cars and people as I'm seeing cyberpunk try pull off GoT/TLOU are like barren empty worlds on purpose, GOT could essentially be Flower for the few hours I've played around with it
      I'm not here to shit on the consoles but the first thing that comes up when I search ps4 rdr2 performance is
      Non-pro PS4 runs RDR2 around 25 fps in Saint Denis and some other towns. Other than that, full 30 fps everywhere. It's probably CPU-bound so PS4 Pro doesn't necessarily fix this.

    It's so refreshing to hear a discussion that, while addresses the many problems, is overall very positive. I've been enjoying the hell out of the game and it's kind of a bummer to be surrounded by negativity surrounding the game itself. There are definitely things with the world, game and performance that deserve criticism, but it's just been bordering on harassment towards the devs. In some cases, full on harassment. It's especially frustrating knowing how disconnected the devs are to the corporate side of things surrounding the release disaster. There's clearly a ton of effort put into the game, and I think with CDPR's flexibility with changing and fixing their games for the better will only improve the game in the long run. I believe people feel betrayed, but I think the best case for everyone is to remember is that corporations aren't your friend and they take advantage of people all the time. But there are hundreds of people working to the bone to give you something fun. Support that at the very least.

    This game is so good, so it's heartbreaking how so many people are jumping on the hatetrain and enjoy tearing this game apart. Sure, there are bugs, and I guess it doesn't run well on consoles from 2013 (I play on PC), but the core game is so good. Not perfect, but so many aspects of it are fantastic. The characters, the world and the story. I'm loving it.
