- MinnMax's Ben Hanson and Ana Diaz are joined by Twitch star Dan Ryckert and best friend Ronnie in this gigantic community-fueled game club discussion of Super Mario 64! We're breaking the beloved Nintendo 64 3D platformer up into three sections/discussions, with this one covering everything from the first Bowser boss fight through the second called Bowser in the Fire Sea. So in this discussion we talk about the ramping difficulty, Hazy Maze Cave, Lethal Lava Land, Shifting Sand Land, Dire, Dire Docks, and of course the metal cap. Even though we're all playing Super Mario 64 on the Nintendo Switch with the Super Mario 3D All-Stars edition, you're welcome to play along on the Nintendo DS, virtual console, or the original Nintendo 64. I think Jolly Rogers Bay is often mistaken for "Dire Dire Docks" because the water music track is called "Dire Dire Docks" in most playback sources, while the general nostalgia for most kids is the first level with the Eel and sunken ship.

Just finished the 120 on this version of SM64. The last stretch is awesome... but very frustrating. Enjoy!
The rabbit in this isn't Nabbit. Nabbit's the purple thief rabbit that first appeared in New Super Mario Bros. U. This rabbit is named Mips, after the microprocessor architecture used in the N64 (MIPS - Microprocessor without Interlocked Pipelined Stages.)

Now that I think about it, that theory that all the paintings are portals actually makes a ton of sense in retrospect, because that's exactly how they function in Super Mario Odyssey.

72 is the star count for this section, as you can't get the last 2 stars from Dire, Dire, Docks until after you beat Bowser, which is the cutoff!
Mine sounded so angry lol I am happy I beat it and happy to play along with everyone but I was playing completely blind and on a time limit so it was very frustrating. I didnt even know shell surfing existed or that there was a flight cap. I had to finesse my way to the 4 pillars.

It's incredible how I've been playing this game for the first time in my life and all these takes are so accurate with my experiences! Don't know if I missed it in these Deep Dive videos, but am I the only one going in and out of the first level in this game grinding those three Life Mushrooms just to be on the safe side when I'm taking on new levels?

@@howarda1000 Yup, apparently Snufits and Snifits are 2 different enemies. Snufits are the floating ghostly ones, and they're only in 64 and Mario Party 2

I have always thought Banjo-Kazooie was a better game because it built on Mario 64 and improved virtually every aspect of it. Nintendo could have done that but chose not to.

played and beat Mario 64 for the first time this year, i thought the bowsers sub thing was pretty clear, since you needed the board the sub star to unlock the second bowser level (in the fire sea) , the level took place inside the sub in my head canon.
Ronnie is hilarious
These are some of my favorite stages in the game, besides Dire Dire Docks. That level sucks.
Shifting Sand and Lava Land (that was fun to say) are two of my favorites. And then Dire Dire Docks and Hazy Maze Cave are two of my least favorite in the game. Balances out to a happy medium.

I'm not watching this yet but in response to part of the newest podcast, I've heard so far. I apologize to Ana Diaz because she actually seems like a great addition. She's mitigating her use of that word. In fairness, I wasn't a fan of when Suriel would do it in the past either. Okay, I will be quiet.

@@bblovely7788 I watch MinnMax for the Personalities and how they remind me of my own friends except with insight into the Game Industry.
I have friends who overuse Like, I still think Ana was just as good of an addition to the team as Leo or any of the others.

I am in complete agreement that its a great thing that she stopped saying "like" every other word. It's good practice to pace your thoughts.
