Ya know Bruce, I have run across this exact same issue a number of times only on blade brake clutch equipped mowers. Several were Quantums and I think two were Honda engines, all with blade clutch setups. There was so much play in the upper crank bearing that they would shake all over and leak oil from the upper seal, a couple would even strike the magneto coil. I have never run across this problem with standard mower engines or large blade brake engines, only small block blade brake equipped models. I don’t know if the smaller engines with a blade brake clutch need more upper bearing support or maybe they need an actual roller bearing on the upper or what it is, but to me it seems to be a common failure point with the blade brake models. Just my observation FWIW, thanks for the great video and I can’t wait for the autopsy (though I’ve done a few for the same reason). BTW, I just converted those mowers to standard operation without the blade brake using a standard mower engine and pulleys / blade adapter.
Damn Bruce, that looks worse than I thought. At first thought it was gonna be a flywheel key or something simple but no. Bad crankshaft wobble could be caused by bad connecting rod bearings due to low on oil. I agree with this. People really need to maintain there stuff and learn from there.
Bruce. It started up on the first pull. It can't be the flywheel key. Plus, if the flywheel key was sheared or even partially sheared ithe pull rope would kick back and rip right out your hands
Sorry Bruce the bushing is gone - such a shame - a 2 min oil check and yearly oil change would have avoided this - but good parts will come of it 🙂Thanks for sharing
I have a honda Izy 416 and need to replace the crankshaft. Do you have any videos of stripping down a Honda to replace the crankshaft and reassembling it? No formal training with engines though if I'm shown how to do it I can successfully ❤
How's she goin'? That was a death knock sound coming from that mower. Especially when it was stopping. And then when you showed the play in the crank. Wow!! No wonder it was knocking eh. It did well to run as good as it did!! Take care!!
I maybe wrong but I think that mowers with cast iron flywheels do better in thick and tall grass rather than aluminum because aluminum only uses the blade so once you slow it down it makes it easier to kill it than a cast iron flywheel. Is that a fair statement?
I've found it to be true on thick, southern turf grasses. I've got one lie in the video that makes it easy and I've got a Troy-bilt with a GCV160 (W/aluminum flywheel) that doesn't stand a chance in some of the thicker patches.
I put a GCV160 on the HRX217 deck (had a blown GCV190). It was an engine I took off a Honda HRB216 with a busted deck . My bolt holes and mounting bolts lined up perfectly but there are a lot of 160 models & others may not. Been mowing with it for 3 seasons & all is good. The gross torque on the 160 is 6.9 vs 8.3 for the 190; about 20% more. What would the HP be? Not entirely sure but back in the day when mowers were rated by HP, a Honda engine roughly equivalent to the 160 boasted 5.0 HP. So if that is a benchmark, a 190 would be 20% more, or 6.0. Anyway, my smaller 160 is plenty powerful enough to move the heavy HRX217. Wanted to make you aware of this option since you are far more likely to run across a 160 some day,
I have to use mine almost as much as the 8 and 10mm, on vehicles and bicycle brakes and derailleurs. I keep three on my roll around, and one of those is 10 inches long, one is normal length, and one is ratcheting. I don't know which one I lose the most, the 9 or the 10.
I heard that too but I think it's just a rumor - their website still has 12 different 21" walk behind models for sale. There's is however a recall out for GCV200 engines that have a defect on the camshaft exhaust decompression valve. People have been getting hand injuries from the engine ripping the start cord out of people's hand while attempting to pull the recoil.

I replaced the top seal on one of these because oil was everywhere. The Honda part wasn't too costly. There's a bearing underneath the seal.

@BrucePender Yeah I guess sometimes knowing when to stop. And with machines of this caliber, repairs get pricey with regards to parts.
