How Many Turns Does it Take to Beat Thousand Year Door?

- In my recent challenges for Paper Mario The Thousand Year Door I've found myself skipping a lot of regular enemy encounters either because they get tedious or because I'm too weak to fight them so this got me thinking... what is the bare minimum amount of turns you can spend in battle in this game to beat it from start to finish?

I love how most gaming communities with challenge runs always devolve into “I love this game! How do I play it the least?”
lmao real
And that implies playing the game more
Playing the game more to play it less
Speedruns: Least Time
Min%: Least stuff
No X: Not interact with whole mechanics
I think you get the point
Gotta figure out how to play less of the game so you can do it more times.
Respect when It comes to the rules, no need to make It "as pure as possible" if It only means wasting time and nothing else
Yeah, challenge runs come in 2 flavours, that can be boiled down to "You" or "I".
"Can I beat Dark Souls without taking damage?" Is a showcase of personal skill and technique when playing the game, with possible allowances for unavoidable damage.
"Can You beat Dark Souls without taking damage?" Is a discussion of forced damage sections like the lava floors after getting the orange ring, or the first room with Seath.
And in the second type, you can go "OK, so I couldn't do this glitch, but here's footage of a speed runner who did." Or "If you're Lucky, yes, so while I didn't, someone Could."

@@calemr Your comment feels really peculiar to me because I thoroughly agree with what I assume you actually mean but the way you phrased it slightly bothers me. I was going to explain what I mean exactly but I'm currently drunk and also lazy as fuck in general. Anyways have a nice day
@@Armin_Akoyim "I'm drunk and lazy but anyway have a nice day" is a sentiment that deeply resonates with me. I hope you have a nice day too stranger~
@@Armin_Akoyimyou real as hell for that one dude
Have a great day internet stranger
Shadow Queen phase 1 can be cut down a turn using Bomb Squad. You only need to hit the Shadow Queen on three separate turns, and internally the bombs go off between two regular attacks. Thank speedrunners for that one.
This is the first thing I thought of when I saw three turns be added. I’m glad someone else thought of it too.
What about a Boo in the audience triggering it? I've seen that in a TAS
not gonna lie the fact that mario can just deal 30+ damage in one bop and all of the bosses just being like "I'm really powerful watch out!!" when mario can tap them to death is really funny to me idk why
One Jumpman
You don't f%&$ with-a Mario!
Mario's canonical power level
yeah. Despite what we saw, this adventure is actually pretty casual for Mario 😭 he had a tougher time against Bowser and the star rod 😭
@@kingfree4109 you'd think he could use the ultimate power of struggling to live with 10 badges pinned all over to just bonk the star rod out of Bowser's hand, but apparently not
Good stuff. Note: For the cannons, you can squeeze past them in paper mode going through the middle of them taking down a few turns of the run.
Plus using Bomb Squad on Shadow Queen can remove another turn on top of that
Yeah, was looking for this comment. Weirdly enough paper mode makes your whole hitbox smaller or something.
in the original paper mario i know that you can skip the cannons by running away from the bills. so that could reduce the total if i works in this game.
@@gbyt034 He counted them if they were "unavoidable"
Knowing speedrun tricks about this game when I played it casually many years ago makes a lot of these comment sound very familiar to me
I'm almost certain that the spiky crown you're thinking of is Queen Bean's in Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga. That's the only similar thing I can recall.
I know that this is 13 years later but also in Paper Jam with King Boo and King Bob-omb
i never played Superstar Saga until much later and i had the same misconception. the game just conditions you to not wanna jump on people with spiked objects on their head so its a reasonable assumption to make.
Since you asked about glitches, the main glitch you could do to save turns is the early ultra hammer glitch, which if you add onto a ground pound glitch, you can literally skip all of Chapter 3 and skip straight to Grubba. From there you're without Yoshi, so you need to do 2 extra turns doing a Koops first strike glitch to get over the gap to Twilight Town's pipe without Yoshi. From there, beating Chapter 4 gives you a Yoshi partner that you've never had lol.
Teleporter room early would skip to chapter 8 and save more no?
@@SPZ-gv2on Teleporter room early takes you to chapter 7, not 8, but you don't get partners out of it so it's impossible.
You guys are missing the biggest glitch of all, ACE can be done in petalburg remember?
Also goomba trio and blooper can both be skipped
@@sythrus What's ACE?
@@chwaftka9775 Arbitrary code execution. With the correct inputs, you can make the game do whatever you want, such as play the ending cutscene.
Good vid! There's definitely some optimizations you can make here; the current record is 63 turns glitchless (64 if you don't skip Shadow Sirens + Doopliss, which they did, but it's 1 turn and I'm not really knowledgeable on what the speedrunning community considers a glitch/not a glitch so I won't really go into it LOL). I won't spoil the solutions, but the video is on TH-cam by a creator called "Artur U"!
I went through it and listed the turns saved:
- 1 turn on Blooper
- 1 turn on Gold Fuzzy
- 1 turn on Hooktail
- [-2 turns because Bringle didn’t count running away from Doopliss]
- 2 turns due to ruleset difference in Chapter 5 (first striking Embers)
- 2 turns from skipping cannons in Chapter 5
- 1 turn on Crump [mentioned in the video as a possible save]
- 3 turns from skipping cannons in Chapter 8
- 3 turns due to ruleset difference in Chapter 8 (first striking bones enemies)
- 1 turn due to ruleset difference(?) by skipping Shadow Sirens + Doopliss
- 1 turns on Shadow Queen by using Bomb Squad
Total: 14 (but really 16 after accounting for Bringle's error)
Breakdown:
- 6 turns caused by a ruleset difference
- 5 turns for cannons
- 5 others
@@comexkwhat’s the video called? I couldn’t find it
The 1 turn blooper is peak crackhead energy lol. Thanks! Don't think I'd have found this vid otherwise.
Thanks for the shoutout GOAT!
@@cammac6243th-cam.com/video/H_JpQoNQxWI/w-d-xo.html
I'm so happy we're in an age where challenge runs like these are booming. Watching people torture themselves with overcomplicated rulesets just hits different. Keep up the good work boss.
Nice video! One place a turn could be saved: I remember hearing in another video about a weird interaction between bobbery's bomb squad and the shadow queen's invincible phase. I forget the exact details, but a turn one bomb squad before the first power bounce should speed up the invincible phase and could save a turn or two, depending how you count.
This interaction also is weird and can also save a turn during the Cortez fight, as the bomb squad goes off after Cortez transforms
@@sandwiches42 That can't save any turns, as Bomb Squad goes off at the start of turn 3 if used on turn 1, and you can already beat his phases in one turn apiece.
@@jdaster64 Well Dang it. Oh well, I thought I had something, I forgot it took 3 turns.
I remember a TAS manipulating an Audience Boo into attacking Shadow Queen, which somehow _counts_ as one of the three "turns of invincibility", bringing it down to two _real_ turns you have to wait...
for the shadow queen fight if you use bobberys move that shoots out bombs that explode a turn later you can cut down the turns you have to wait. I dont remember how it works exactly, i just saw it in a speed run
It works by bomb squad being weird.
Funnily if a stage hazard hits the Shadow Queen during her Invincible Phase that would also count, needing only two turns to finish that phase.
Your definition of a turn, is what most RPGs consider a 'Round' of combat, but yeah, makes sense on your ruling.
I mean, this game considers it a turn, the glitz pit requirement says
"Beat the enemy within 5 turns" and they mean five whole rounds
The game just calls it turns
I could be totally lying, but I remember hearing if you're perfectly in the middle of the Bullet Bill blasters that you can walk right through
You are not lying
I think you have to be in paper mode right? It has a smaller hitbox i think
Yessssss I was thinking about that 😭 it was bothering me so I checked the comments. I used to walk between the bullets and just slowly walk between the bill Blasters
In paper mode, yes
I could be misremembering, but I'm almost certain I've done it without being in paper mode
Merlee could also save an extra turn in chapter 8, and likely fairly easily too. Considering you were only one level from red bones giving 0 star points, you'd just need to get the extra star points spell a couple times to get an extra level to first attack the red bones, saving a turn.
Really cool video! Chapter 2 seems like torture lol
Edit: oh yeah someone else mentioned the bill blasters are all skippable with paper mode, so maybe that'd get in the way of this? I'm unsure. Also I think the second Crump turn would be skippable by using double dip in the cortez fight with 5 fp, dropping your fp to 1, and then using a point swap on goombella. Goombella can then use a regular headbonk with the right amount of power to kill cortez in the normal amount of turns, and would then be set up to kill crump in one turn. Hooktail seems like it would actually need a merlee manip to be done in two turns though.
Merlee will never trigger in the entire run if it is played optimally (technically it will trigger during the Shadow Queen fight at best, but it is not useful there). At best, it trades two extra turns somewhere to save this turn. Her first curse takes 5 to 10 turns to go off, but the counter doesn't decrement until starting on the second turn of battle. The counter and type of curse are also not set until the first time the second turn of battle occurs after talking with her, meaning you effectively need a sixth turn that isn't turn 1. That means you have to get a curse before Hooktail. You then go through Hooktail (optimally 2 turns, very much possible but absolutely miserable RNG required unless you rank up FP first), Iron Clefts (2 turns), and Cortez (3 turns). At this point, you have taken 4 turns after the first turn of battle and never have another battle last past turn 1 until the Shadow Queen. Maybe one more turn for Crump 2 if no answer is found for him, but we are still a turn short.
The entire party is fully healed after getting a Crystal Star in all versions of the game except the Japanese one, so setting up during Cortez does not work for Crump unless we are willing to play the Japanese version.
When that Yoshi grows up they're gonna shorten their name to Min T., and lie to everyone about it being a pun on "Minty" to spare themselves some of the embarassment.
Rally Wink wasn't mentioned as a possible solution to Chapter 5 Crump, but you can't get Ultra Rank until after that battle so that's a no-go. Only mentioning here in hopes that others like me who were wondering about it don't waste time researching it!
Thanks for the info! I was wondering the same thing lol. It's because there is no way back to Rogueport with Bobbery until after the fight right?
During Fatman703's damageless run, he shows that each bomb squad little bombs counts as a separate attacks for the shadow queen invincibility phase, making it possible to do that phase in one turn, I wonder if you could save 1 maybe even 2 turns with that
The shade thrown on Dream at the very end was a great reference.
It’s less shade and more a meme at this point, even among the Dream Team.
@@eroraf8637 only the dream fanbase would be deluded enough to think cheating is a meme
@@the1whoplayz At that point, you're just fishing for reasons to hate on him. They don't think that his cheating is a meme, rather they're memeing about his cheating. (Ooh! That rhymes.)
I wanna see you do a challenge where you can only use terrible options for things like partners and badges. Flurrie will finally have her time to shine!
Flurrie solo is one of the easiest partner solos. She can attack everything you have to fight except flame enemies, which she can deal with using items or Gale Force, and she is absolutely impossible to kill. The hard partner solos are Bobbery and Mowz.
@celestialspark5697 well what if it was a duo or trio with Bobbery and/or Mowz? Always switching to whoever is least optimal for the given fight?
The final fight advances by checking for the queen being attacked on 3 seperate turns. By using Bobbery's Bomb Squad you can essentially deal damage in 2 of your turns and before the start of your 3rd turn. It skips straight to the dialogue/cutscene before your turn starts so I think that would count under your rule set as eliminating a turn.
26:10 paper mode reduces Mario hitbox, which means if you’re on the midpoint of the bridge you should be able to *slide* right past those blasters.
Actually such a criminally underated channel. Been watching a good bit of these Paper Mario TTYD Challenges and they're very entertaining and very well constructed. Didn't realize i wasn't subscribed (and that's when i realized how offensively low that count is). Also as much as I love the Paper Mario content, id love to see you expand your roster with various game challenges as well (I know you've done a few others lol). So yeah, Keep up the good work dude! I'll definitely be waiting for the next video!
I love finding that this game I grew up on still has such a thriving community
So I don't think it qualifies as a glitch, but you can in fact avoid the bill blasters in the Palace of Shadows! You can barely fit using Marios Paper Mode hitbox, this might be true for Keelhaul as well
Speedrunning tricks are usually great for these challenges
So low HP in Danger/Peril range with Power Rush + Mega Rush equipped is such an insane strategy. Wiping out any of the tough event boss fights in a flash. Excellent work with the minimal amount of turns required, Bringle. 😎👍
I'm loving seeing these challenge runs man! It's amazing to see just how many different ways TTYD can be played. Keep up the awesome work.
Oh, I was just binging your TTYD videos (again), I'm excited to add another one to the list! I love your content so much
easily one of my favorite games, excited to find your channel!
I was actually really curious to see Dupliss beaten before he transforms into Mario.
Super cool video!! Keep up the good work, these challenge runs are awesome!
This generation remembered their childhood nostalgia and spun it into gold with these types of videos.
I love how HD your game is it’s so satisfying to watch. This was another great video
EDIT: Did you try turning into paper mode and then walking between the bullet cannons? Not sure if it’s TAS only but i think you can bypass them like that
Great challenge run. Can’t wait for more of your content 😊
Great video! I cannot imagine you savestating to get that insane luck to get down the pit of 100 trials without any fights
AWESOME concept for a video, I hope other people try similar challenges!
Taking a page from the TAS, shadow queen can save a turn if a boo triggers in the audience and hits her, that counts as one of the required hits needed to end the invincible phase
Love your videos bro, keep up the great work.
You can actually skip the bullet blasters I'm pretty sure with a precis movement with papermode and walking between them.
Nice I always love to watch challenge runs for older games and see what strategy people use to finish them
Iirc for the invincible phase of the Shadow Queen, the game considers it complete if the Shadow Queen is attacked three times. Partners don't count, but the audience does. If you get an audience member to attack her, you can technically complete that phase in just 2 turns. I think the TAS does something similar.
Good shit, i love your content, super well executed and presented
37:05 Actually if I remember correctly, the bombshell blasters are so separated that if you use paper mode you can squeeze inbetween them and skip the fights.
Also, if you use Bomb Squad when the Shadow Queen is in her invincible state, each of the bombs will count as an individual hit, so you can essentially skip the invincible phase in a single turn. Neat Speedrunning trick.
Your work is like that of a channel with millions of subs, you're super underrated. Your editing and the way you pace and script out your videos is incredible. Love the work, keep it up!
GOSH! You used my favorite calamity mod track for chapter 2 start and im so happy you did, Outcast of the sulphurous seas is seriously amazing
Love the Ttyd content! Please keep it up 🤩
Haven’t watched this yet but it’s an interesting challenge.
If I recall correctly, the minimum number of battles you need to enter by the end of Chapter 1 is 10; 1, Crump; 2, Goomba Trio; 3, Blooper; 4, Shwonk Gatehouse #1; 5, Shwonk Gatehouse #2; 6, Sun Key Fuzzy; 7, Moon Key Fuzzy; 8, Gold Fuzzy; 9, Red Bones; 10, Hooktail.
Then in Chapter Two, obviously you have the bosses with the Shadow Sirens and Magnus, but at this point I know there are forced X-Naut encounters and Piders that need to be beaten so that the Punie hoard can pass through the room without running off, but I can’t remember exactly how many of those there are.
Great video dude 👍
I subscribed at 3:00 because of how freaking honest you are about it. Good job! :D
"a surprise Mouseketool that will help us later"
Hoo boy, it's been years since I've heard _that_ reference...
Great video, definitely subbing 👏
This video was professionally made for someone who can easily understand what the tips and tricks are, and I am proud this came up on my recommendations.
Idk if it's been said already, but there are RNG manipulations that can skip a few shadow queen turns
If a boo from the audience tries to give her a boo sheet, it takes 1 turn. I'm not sure, but maybe a stage hazard can as well
Awesome video! This is my favorite game of all time and I love seeing new content on it!
I’ve been watching all your videos as you release them and still can’t believe you only started 4ish months ago. Love the quality of every video and know it’s only a matter of time until your sub count reflects that quality.
Liked and subscribed. i cannot wait to play this when it comes out on the switch. i missed out because i never got a game cube but the original paper mario was my favorite game on the n64.
Good stuff. Commenting for the analytics boost.
The goombas in chapter 6 were supposed to be some other enemy that wasn't fully coded in.
First video I've seen from ya. I love how ya don't dawdle on unnecessary things and are up front with the rules and whatnot. You deserve the subscribe.
Strange idea and more entertaining than anticipated.
Keep up the good work.
Having watched the "partners only" run and now stumbling on this (thanks YT algorithm) I figured I may as well subscribe since I like the TTYD content. However its a shock that you have less than 10K subscribers with the quality of your content
Loving this pokemon music! Great vid!
I believe that in the JP version, you don't get full healed when you finish a chapter. Thus, I imagine you could skip that Lord Crump turn by having Goombella or Yoshi eat a trial stew during the Cortez fight. It didn't look like you leveled up after Cortez, and since regular jumps are sufficient for him, you don't have to worry about FP until you have a chance to restore it outside of battle anyway. Come to think of it, in the NA version, do all the partners get healed, or just the active one? If it's the latter, you could have one of them eat the stew, and then switch them out before the end of the fight.
Meanwhile, if I'm not mistaken, I think you can save a turn or two during the Shadow Queen invincibility phase with Bobbery's Bomb Squad move. With proper positioning, I think each explosion will count as a separate attack for the purposes of advancing.
Very fun video, subscribed.
Edit: So I just watched this video: th-cam.com/video/H_JpQoNQxWI/w-d-xo.html which some others had mentioned. It seems the end of chapter ceremony doesn't even happen after the Cortez fight, so getting a partner in peril is even simpler (they also used point swap shenanigans instead of trial stew). But on the other hand, it unfortunately seems Bomb Squad's explosions technically happen at the beginning of the following turn, so alas. It also has some alternate strats and a bunch of other tricks to save some sneaky additional turns, also worth checking out.
Great video.
One thing I want to add is that you can avoid the golden canons with paper mode. Don’t know if that can also be done with the two normal canons on the island but if would cut down the amount of turns by at least 3.
I'd love to see the same challenge, but without badges (or at the very least without ones like Peril that trivialize a majority of the game lol). Great stuff though man.
Man really love seeing you grow and continue to put out high quality content!! You should try to branch out by doing other Paper Mario games (64 maybe super).
I've been binge watching your TTYD challenge videos; hands down one of my favorite games and the interesting twists make it even more enjoyable! Side note: For the end-game bullet bills (and maybe the grotto ones as well I'm not sure) I remember in an any% TAS they were able to use paper mode to barely squeeze between their hitboxes. Not sure if this would count as a glitch or not but especially with save states it might save a couple of turns! Keep up the great work!
You can save turns on the Shadow Queen boss fight’s invincible phase, actually. Using Bomb Squad on the hands speeds it up, as each individual bomb counts towards the attacks needed to go to phase 2.
Just when you thought Bringles couldn’t, he showed us all that Bringle can
Great work!

Hi Bringle!
I hope this challenge becomes as intricate as Super Mario 64's ABC.
I thought I was subbed to you, thanks for the reminder cause I love your content
Honestly, this is a really solid showing of how diverse this game was
Sooo good and thorough! It's almost unthinkable to beat an entire RPG in 77 turns. I wonder what an average number of turns would be for a casual playthrough without meta strats.
10:56 this joke took a second to understand but when i did it gave me memories of the show when my little sister used to watch it often.
wrt the chapter 5 crump fight, and partner peril in general- the glitzville souvenir shop sells "point swaps" for 5 coins, swaps mario/a partner's HP with your FP- so if you have mario in peril, you can use a point swap to swap his HP to FP, setting FP to 1, and then use another on the partner to swap their HP with that one FP, setting the partner in peril, meaning for 10 coins, as long as you can set mario in peril, you can set any partner in peril
I don't know for certain if point swaps are usable outside of battle, but i see no reason that they wouldn't be. if thats the reason they were overlooked than that's understandable lol
Are you certain you can use Point Swaps out of combat? I do not remember that being possible.
7:11 this is a known mechanic in the speedrunning community. It's a hardcoded limit, I think it's usually just called the Power Bounce Limit, there's not really a way around it as far as I recall. The limit is pretty much just in place to prevent highly-skilled players from one-shotting bosses.
I do want to point out that as soon as you get Yoshi you can actually get spike sheild since with extremely tight control and luck you can use yoshi to run past the spikes to get the badge.
Never thought id see a paper mario ltc but happy to see it
Genuinely cant wait for the remaster of this game, its the only paper mario ive never played, ironically is the best one lmao
TH-cam! This guy is doing a good job! Show his videos to more people!
Well to reduce your partners HP you can always opt for point swap. just get your FP low and point swap your partner point swap should be available from chapter 3 onward, with that crump should be easily become a 1 turn fight.
when i saw the title, i assumed it was talking about mario flipping over when he switches directions. minimum flips could also be a cool challenge run idea though!
Your content is always amazing i cant believe how much commitment you have towards the game. I cant wait to see what comes next. Btw have you thought about doing a challenge run in the first Paper Mario? I recently played it and had a lot of fun so i was wondering what kind of challenges you could come up with.
Nice! bro actually made the video I suggested, its like tailored content woo
If anyone is interested, the mishap in chapter 3 with the extra fight causes a difference of 3 star points gained over defeating Bowser. (I went to check because I was curious)
You've become my new night time routine 😊❤
For any game really, checking out a glitchless speedrun can always be a good source of information. iirc, there's a way to get by the bill launchers using paper mode in ch5 (looking at the speedrun you can get past the ones in ch8 too with a highjump to some odd collision and jump over them). Very nice vid tho
You weren't alone in thinking the Shadow Peach's crown was spikey. I also incorrectly remembered that.
I believe you can shave one or two turns off the Shadow Queen fight using Bobbery's Bomb Squad - Throw them out before Mario initiates the invincible phase, then on the second turn of that phase, the squad will explode. IIRC there's something weird with how Bomb Squad acts on their own "turn", which causes each explosion to count towards a turn spent fruitlessly attacking her, so it should then immediately progress to the next phase.
I just finished watching the partner only run when this dropped, awesome
yeah new bringle video that’s what we like
cleft chad graphic goes hard. you, sir, have earned a sub
thank you for this
Mom Bringle just uploaded another video
This video reminded me of an idea i had once, dnd speedrunning, if a campaign of a premade module with the max reccomended players all minmaxed, what would be the minimum rounds of combat needed to beat the module
