22:00 There's a reason you've never seen that attack before. Whenever you whack Cortez's bone pile, he shrinks, and when shrunk, he can only use his charged attack.
The idea of Mario being a dirty coward and making everyone in his company do the dirty work reminds me of a Flash RPG duology called _Crystal Story_ (the first game of which has been remade in Unity to...mixed reception, and there may or may not be a sequel remake on the way). [SPOILERS BELOW, if you even care] In the first game, an evil witch steals a crystal of power and uses it to resurrect a terrifying ancient beast. A man by the name of Hiro hires a startup company called Mercenary Inc. to take on the task of tracking down the witch and slaying this beast. Four adventurers accomplish this task...and Hiro is recorded as having single-handedly slain the beast himself, when in reality he never participated in combat nor dealt a lick of damage (and is fact is KO'd be a weak attack in-cutscene and carried around in this unconscious state for most of the adventure). The intro to the second game even summarizes the first as if Hiro was the one who slew the beast and restored peace (but it does give Mercenary Inc. an honorable mention).

Mario supergaurding is like that calebsity skit where the guy is cowering but then parries the attack out of nowhere and then goes back to cowering. "When loan sharks turn into regular businessmen" was the title, i think
I like to imagine that Mario got cursed on the way to rougeport, removing his ability to fight other than first striking. This forces him to strategize, while he normally just attacks until the job is done. His partners recognize this and choose him as the leader, realizing that while he’s not actually able to fight, but is a great strategist.
I feel like you sleep on Flurrie too much. Gale Force is just an early game Showstopper AND Lip Lock is a Defense Piercing Life Steal move. That's so good, dude!
The problem with Flurrie is she's completely missing a strong damaging move. Goombella has Multibonk, Koops has Power Shell, Yoshi's moves are all strong, Vivian has Fiery Jinx, and Bobbery has Bobombast. Mowz kind of stinks for the same reason. Gale Force is definitely great but as with Showstopper, it won't work in boss fights and you shouldn't rely on it because it's pure luck. Lip Lock makes Flurrie into a great tank but considering there's no way to "draw aggro" in this game and most tough bosses have area attacks anyways, there's no real place for that in the game because Mario will just die instead. She's definitely not *as* awful as people seem to say but she is a straight downgrade from every other partner in the game from a damage perspective, and damage is the key to victory in TTYD.
@@gerbiluwu Dodgy Fog can be a nice niche move at least, having a 50% chance to avoid attacks for 4 turns for the cost of a mere 4 FP is REALLY nice, but again, a 50% chance isn't really 100%, so you might end up wasting 4 FP for nothing. Still, when it does work, it's great
@@gerbiluwu While those are indeed problems with Flurrie, the same applies to any partner that's not Goombella or Yoshi, multihit moves are just really good, especially under danger/peril. And Koops cheaper spread utility for grounded foes makes him a necessity, and while Gale Force is RNG, it is also broken and can even totally save you in many runs. Even when it doesn't blow every enemy away and you at least get one out of how many there are that is still huge. And sure, Flurrie lacks power, but so does Vivian, Bobbery and Mowz too. Flurrie is better for bosses than those three and Fiery Jinx is outclassed by Stampede and Gale Force because any situation where you'd wanna FJ you'd just Gale Force them. She isn't any less damage heavy than Vivian, Bobbery or Mowz. Mowz is just the worst at everything, Bobbery has damage issues that get worse when defense comes into play, and while Fiery Jinx does give Vivian spread damage, there are also a lot of situation where it just won't work, and Gale Force will. And any weakness GF has would apply to FJ, only GF covers FJ downsides. Flurrie is also more useful against dragons, Cortez and Magnus more than Vivian. Even though neither are great partners. I also fail to see how she's a downgrade from every partner, when Mowz has the worst damage in the game and everyone outside of Goom and Yoshi have the same problem non multihit moves do.
This, the Flurrie hate is unfair. She isn't bad just the game doesn't favor her skill set as much over how easy it is to break damage wise with some of the other partners. As far as the more defensive type partners go though I feel she is the only one w/o a very big weakness at least. Koops can get flipped and has low hp to make up for his extra def, bomb is fp costly, both of them can't restore their own hp while attacking or attack certain foes in various areas of the battle as easily as her. There is no way to "draw aggro" but putting her in front makes her take the bulk of attacks anyway cause like Final Fantasy 1 the ones in front are more likely to be attacked. Gale Force is luck to a point but knowing what foes are weak to it really helps it power wise. Sure that requires a bit of extra knowledge/experimentation but once you get that it is sort of like blue magic in Final fantasy again where it shows its power better. Really though yeah damage dealing partners break the game but I blame badges being a bit more broken and how you can have so many of them for that for favoring offense and not giving enough defense ones.
This challenge kinda solidified this opinion, but you remind me of myself back when I started challenge running this game LOL I think that's why I've been really enjoying your content. Keep it up! (do the pit LOL)
I'd say Quick-Change should be allowed but damaging via Mario's Superguarding shouldn't- save for the opening Krump fight where you'd have no other choice. Anyway, I'm guessing the partner badges don't work for the Vivian in the Dupliss fight because they trigger at the start of the battle- which Vivian is absent for. I think another good challenge would be if you can only use each partner for 1 fight per chapter (at least until you've cycled through all of them within the chapter) and you can never have more than one boss fight across the whole game per partner (at least until you've cycled through all of them).
7:10 You have been tricked, you have been backstabbed, and you have been, quite possibly, bamboozled. The game has coding to cut off your powerbounce streak whenever it feels like it, especially against bosses. That was you getting capped, it wasn't you missing the action command.

The Grodus fight is honestly easy in my opinion using Vivian as she can take out his shield fuckheads and using Fiery Jinx over and over again Grodus will never have a full shield.
Fiery Jinx is super useful against Grodus under normal conditions, but in this challenge with the rules I set it doesn't really work. Vivian has to spend 6FP to delete all the Grodus X's, and then her normal attack doesn't do that much to Grodus. I'd quickly run out of FP and have to heal because the fight would get dragged out longer. She can't swap to Goombella or Yoshi since that takes up the one turn that Grodus is open before getting his shield back.

@ 17:27 Years ago, Emile, aka Chuggaaconroy, did a playthrough of this game and thanks to Luck Badges, he managed to do a no damage to Mario run with Grubba. The episode was nicknamed: Luck of the Highest Caliber. For your run, I shall dub it: SKILL of the Highest Caliber!!
Technically during chapter 4 couldn’t you attack enemies with “Mario” because technically he isn’t Mario during that time since his identity got stolen
40:52 “I don’t think that it’s ever going to be possible to beat the whole game over world and all without him unless people find a way to execute arbitrary code by jizzing on the game disc or something”
It’s pretty hard to pick and choose which characters superguard and don’t because most of the timings are feel-based rather than reaction-based. I think with how hard a lot of boss superguards are, strategy still plays a big part in not spending hours on each boss.
@@BringlesCanTrue, but from a theoretical standpoint, you can easily beat the game using superguard as only a few attacks are unsuperguardable. From a strategic point of view it's more interesting to rely on defensive badges and maintaining limited health to get trough the tougher fights or find the point in the game where no matter the set up, it is mathematically impossible to survive the fight. It's the same reason most challenges ban lucky dodge badges as in theory you could reset until you dodge the most dangerous moves.
I noticed you had some partner badges equipped for the Second doopliss battle with only Mario and Vivian, fun fact, Partner badges just, don't work in that fight, I assume it's because the game checks if you have partners to apply badge effects to at the start of the battle, and since you don't have partners at the start of the battle, the check goes, "Oh no partners, no need to apply these badge effects"
Today I Learned: The Hand-It-Overs have more than one win condition. Unless I'm imagining things, I could've sworn I'd ALWAYS gotten the "don't get stolen from" condition. Also, I pretty much mained Koops (and Yoshi) until I got Bobbery, and I don't remember him flipping over and getting stuck like that. Am I just getting old and forgetful, or did I get super lucky or something? *_HOLY-!_* And I've literally NEVER seen that cannon move from Magnus 2 before! I've only had to deal with the rocket fists, and only saw the jump-drill on OTHER people's playthroughs!! I'm starting to wonder if my copy was scuffed. 😂
Since you're using texture mods, it would be cool if you changed Mario's textures in some way. You could make him monochrome, semi-transparent or even invisible.
They have actually figured out how to do ACE for this game, you mentioned TASMalleo in your more recent TTYD challenge so you might already be aware lol. So far I’ve only seen it be used to credits warp (it involves sitting in a shop for a long time) and I doubt anyone’s looked into removing Mario
What was the background music you used while fighting the Shadow Queen? Also, the Unova Elite 4 Battle Theme was an excellent OST choice for Chapter 7 (seriously, the fact that Mario was still alive after 5 USES OF THE AUDIENCE CANNON was impressive in its own right)! For some reason, I often imagine Mario charging up a Spring Jump at that one part just past the middle of the song that sounds similar to the BGM for the 2nd half of the Palace of Shadow! (watch?v=llnXhrCn9Yo, between the 0:53 & 0:58 marks)
Curious question but isn’t Fiery Jinx really good against Grodus and his X guys? (don’t know their name, sorry) I’ve only ever watched TTYD so I’m just proposing the idea more than anything.

Years ago, Emile, aka Chuggaaconroy, did a playthrough of this game and thanks to Luck Badges, he managed to do a no damage to Mario run with Grubba.
Nice challenge, makes this game shine even more.
'The AU where Doopliss keeps Marios Identity.'
“And then I had to use a second gulp to finish them off” 💀
I'm going to keep saying it. You're going to be a much bigger channel soon bro. Keep up the amazing work🎉🎉
So essentially in this universe Mario is just a scared of everything on the island and he only the things you know he will fight
Love the "never let up" from mario Luigi dream team bros at start
You know you can use Vivian’s ability to dodge the bombshell bill blasters instead of trying to jump over it
17:13 I didn’t even know he could charge
Nintendo Paper: The thousand partner door.
15:36 you could call him by his Japanese name of Hawk Hogan
PARTNERS ONLY PIT! yes!!!!! GG Bringle!
Bros building himself up to be the go to TTYD content creator
40:52 “I don’t think that it’s ever going to be possible to beat the whole game over world and all without him unless people find a way to execute arbitrary code by jizzing on the game disc or something”
Would've been a lot more interesting if the partners couldn't super guard. Kinda just turns strategy into just an execution check
*sees title of video* "i wonder how he'll do creepy steeple time"
Would have been funny to wear the L emblem here
I await the 2.5 hour compilation video of you redoing all these thousand year door challenges in the remake to compare what’s changed.
Love Bringle nights
I watched Chuggaaconroys Lp of TTYD a million times, and yesterday I successfully used my totally legit software to play the first chapter and a half

Flurrie can summon a hurricane for a fight
PIT OF 100 MUTIBONKS PLZZ!!
a funny way of doing this visually would be to make mario's sprite be a frail old goomba so that he's basically a leader but not actually capable.
Paper partner: The Thousand-Year Door
the canon Luigi route
Interesting challenge, but I think that another title that would fit it would be:
Paper Mario Thousand Years Door Pokemon Trainer.
But he's using a "totally legit original GC disc", didn't you know?
They have actually figured out how to do ACE for this game, you mentioned TASMalleo in your more recent TTYD challenge so you might already be aware lol. So far I’ve only seen it be used to credits warp (it involves sitting in a shop for a long time) and I doubt anyone’s looked into removing Mario
My favorite game! Paper….: The Thousand Year Door!
Alternate title: Can you beat Paper Mario: Thousand Year Door as Luigi?
Can't wait for the remake!
Curious question but isn’t Fiery Jinx really good against Grodus and his X guys? (don’t know their name, sorry) I’ve only ever watched TTYD so I’m just proposing the idea more than anything.
is there a video for your emulator settings? Your game seems so smooth
