I was so excited to see this video pop in my sub feed! :) That was a very good way of explaining and making other experiencing tics for those who don't have them. You already know I have the tics - I find the less frequent ones easier to cope with, whereas the frequent ones I have more or less replaced with a competing response, but they still happen quite constantly, so in that regard I've been unsuccessful in reducing their frequency. For me it's more important for the tics to have the lowest impact possible on my self-perception (so I guess more CBT-like strategies - ie. being able to acknowledge and feel wholeheartedly that me having tics doesn't make me a lesser person or perform worse or any less good at doing something), and if I'm able to do that I notice them less - even if they still happen. So in that regards, they reduce their impact on me. :)
Thanks so much for your comment and feedback! I was anxiously waiting to hear what you'd have to say as your opinion on this means a lot to me! You make a great point about how self-perception impacts tics. The way you see yourself impacts the way you feel which impacts the frequency and intensity of tics. Sometimes that idea gets lost in discussions of behavior therapy.
I have ALOT of tics and have had them since I was little. I was never diagnosed with the disorder because I dont have vocal tics (I honestly dont think I should be diagnosed anyways) these tics have died down a little bit though.
My 11 year old has tics. He has been on numerous med and nothing truly helps long.. and he has began to be depressed..He doesn't seem to be coping with them. The tics change..they get worse or at times ease off.. its a roller coaster and he stays overwhelmed.. especially because he has a jaw popping tic that has caused his molars to cut him badly .. wish GA had Therapy for his tics..
I'm so tired of my tics. It's ruined friendships, relationships, jobs, and hobbies. Been stuttering since 4 years old with many other physical tics over the years. Breathing exercises, speech therapy, diet and healthy lifestyle choices... nothing has helped. I hope somebody who suffers from this can conquer it. It feel pretty hopeless at times but I'm doing my research and not giving up!
Honestly started to tear up watching this. I’ve always struggled with physical tics and it’s caused a lot of physical pain over the years. It felt really nice to be validated that my problems are real and that there are things I can do to help myself. Thank you for making this video

Im 14 and ive been experiencing this for about a 4 months and i have ADHD and even if i take adderall it doenst help thank god i found this video. And thank you for motivating me ❤
I've had them since I was 9 years old, I'm 43 now and I can tell you it gets so much better, not the tics because I still have them but life is great and you will become more confident and live your life more freely and slowly stop caring what people say and think, when I was 15 I thought my life was over school was BAD, but trust me it gets so much better
I've had tics since I was young. Never knew science has a name for it. It's embarrassing to have them and it sucks when others notice and mimics you. For those who do not have them, be thankful. I often wonder what the world will be like when you do not have tics, without the constant feeling of having an "itch you have to scratch" through some involuntary movement or another. This video helps a bit. Thanks, The Psych Show guys.
We all family got tested positive for covid ,during that self isolation period my son got tics, after we finish isolation period I made my son busy ,more active ,took him to the park after school everyday ,adapted pets birds for him and make him physically and mentally busy and happy ,it really helped ,tics are almost gone ,I am sharing my personal experience only to help others .
You get bullied at school currently? I’ve been there! I have bad case of motor tics. Since I was 4, I’m 34 now. They tried to bully, little bit tougher for them as I fight back. I was a part of wrestling team at school, I’ve been in Brazilian jiu jitsu for about ten years now. I always highly recommend this form of martial art to bully victims, they teach you how to be confident and assertive. Bullies will avoid people who are confident in their selves. Not only that, you will win the fight 9 out of 10 times, without even throwing one punch. It’s about co trolling your opponent. I suggest you find a bjj gym around and give it a try.
@@brandasar7913 I agree. I have had tics since I was 5 or 6 and now I’m 30. People tried to bully me but as soon as they tried, I always fought back. So it happened les and less. But I was always confident and studied not really bad so it helped to avoid bullying
I've been struggling with both motor and vocal tics for about 16 years now. It's been very tough to deal with it, but videos like these make me realize that tics are in fact a real issue and that it CAN be managed. Thank you!
I've been struggling with ticks for more than a decade. Well this video really helped me I didn't know anything about this tricks and tips. I hope I can liberate myself, I can't even think how life is like without ticks. Good luck to everyone and thank you.
I haven't been diagnosed because everyone around me thinks it's either "bad habit" or it's deliberate... but it runs in the family so I'm pretty sure that what I experience is tics no matter whatever it may origin from... thank you so much for the video ! Our guiding angel in an unaware neglecting world
I thank you very much. Since I am not only suffering from Tourette, but also from Autism and compulsive disorder, this is extremely helplful since it does actually also teach the emotions to change.
Never been diagnosed or anything, but i think i do have A LOT of tics. Sometimes its hard eye blinking, flexing arm and leg muscles, flexing neck, and some other ones that will occasionally pop up. I feel that i can suppress the urge when i focus all my attention on it and try to feel how the urge happens before i do it.
I have about 6 tics now. But some of them last for a few weeks, months or years and then disappear. Sometimes they come back, or new ones take their place. It's so weird and irritating and hard to control them when around people... -.-
Thanks for sharing your experience! This is very common with tics. Some come, some go, and some stick around. What I always talk to my patients about is focusing on one tic at a time, usually the one that's most getting in the way, and build up your ability to manage that tic first.
It's really cool to have both a Psychologist and a Neuroscientist giving input on the same stuff, to see how you approach the topic in slightly different ways
I've had tic since I was about 5. (I'm 26 now.) I always feel like a victim of the tics. They are so bizarre. Like lately I have been having two major ones, one is where I have to squeeze my left eyebrow muscle down and then follow it by a thumb twist where I have to see a shiny reflection on my thumbnail. If I don't see a light reflection on my thumb nail my brain goes crazy and wants to redo the whole thing. X( I will try the technique described in this video and pray that it helps. I've recently started taking depression meds (dopamine inhibitors) and I think it's making it even worse! I'll keep you updated
I have a vocal tic and while I was put on tons of medication as a child for it nothing really helped. I didn’t cope with it at all, I was badly bullied growing up and it just made me more aware of it. But since I’ve seen your videos and deep breathing helps as you say I’m going to give it a try. I’m almost 26 and I’ve been dealing with it since I was a child and I’m just done with it and I want it to stop.
I'm so sorry to hear you had such a difficult experience with a vocal tic and bullying. I hope this video and the resources in the description are helpful! Thank you for watching.
Tics don’t have a warning sign. Your body just has an irritability and that’s the reaction. And it’s not an urge that you’re thinking about. Unless you were already ticking and are annoyed by the ticking and trying to stop it. But as soon as your mind goes off of it, they come back. These exercises only help for a moment to relax. Tourette’s comes from anxiety. And calming them depends on the severity of the syndrome you have. Everyone is different. But yes, the basil ganglia is suspected to be the source of the condition. But I think if you “rewire” you tend to just develop different tics elsewhere.
I've had tics since I was maybe 7 or 8 and I know others who have them. There is absolutely an urge/feeling I get prior to performing the tic, otherwise I wouldn't tic!!! Anxiety absolutely exacerbates tic disorders, but it is absolutely not the cause. I tic even when I'm completely calm and comfortable
My tics problem started from when I was 13. And I'm practicing these processes since then. Now I'm 19 and the tics are really unnoticeable. These really helps.
My daughter has neck jerking tic whilst breathing in and it’s constant at the moment. She has moments where she loses her breath… does anyone have any techniques to help calm them down?
I've had a head-shaking tic for many years and it severely lowers my quality of life. I had tics bad as a child, they went away and in my late 20s they came back. I will try this method, thank you for posting. I have some questions for you, what kind of therapist can I seek for in-person treatment? Also, can head and neck tics cause brain damage?
This is SO great to know❤️ I've been suppressing Tourette's tics my whole life and it's become overwhelmingly painful and exhausting recently. Suppressing does NO GOOD!!! I can't wait to try these tips!! THANK you!! God BLESS you!!
I have tics. I have one where I blink a lot though it is more like a hard blink/ grimace. Another one is a head nodding tic which is more like a twitch. This tic in particular stresses me out because I dont want people to notice and Im scared that they will ask me why I keep twitching when I cant control it. Thank you for the video.
I have a neck tic since middle school, I never knew what it actually was until Lewis news about his TS. But suprisingly, I unconsciously did the same as your recommendation to neck-down my neck everytime the urge of tic comes. Tic really can be triggered by seeing other's tic as mentioned, I really feel it. If we have the conscious against tic, we can reduce and prevent it to come. Thank you for sharing this vid
Focus on a physical activities or exercise. Do it daily so once it becomes a habit slowly you will notice you dont have tics anymore.Having a stressball can also help while going through the process.
I developed tics around 7 years ago now due to a highly stressful and sometimes dangerous job. I never had them before this. My tics involve clenching teeth, eye blinking, fist clenching which really causes my pains in my wrists, sometimes toe clentching, sometimes arm stretching and a lot in my stomach and face. Just reading these comments on here makes me realise there are more people out there dealing with tics than I realised. This is some what supportive. If only there was a support group or social online group for people with tics. My tics started easing around June last year on their own after 6 years of intense and embarrassing situations.. however I had I a house fire in November due to someone petrol bombing my neighbours home which the fire spread to ours whilst we were in bed. The house is a mess but we are alive. Then my cat died a few weeks later followed now by being in lockdown and this coronavirus all this has just built up the stress and anxiety again which feeds my tics so as I write this I have been suffering with my tics all day and they at a all time high. I am goinv to try your recommendation and also going to do my vest to reduce my stress and worry despite it being a dark time we are living in. I no I have to be strong but its not easy on your own especially when isolating. Its a testing time mentally for all of us. However I do find some comfort in reading other people comments here. Maybe we could all come together to produce an one support group or fb group/chat or something which may help. But I am definitely going to try this.
For my skin picking I hid all mirrors, twizors and safty pins I keep my nails short. I use stim toys to hold and mindfulness. My tics/stimming are not Tourette or Autism. I just do them if Im at home or find a safe place if Im out. My dx's are Sczoaffective dis, ADHD, GAD, CAPD, dyslexia.
Thanks for your feedback! It sounds like you are implementing a lot of what psychologists call "stimulus control" interventions, changing things in your environment that make it less likely for you to pick your skin. I wrote up a guide about how to apply behavioral treatments to hair-pulling here: alimattu.com/blog/2010/10/7/a-beginners-guide-to-treating-trichotillomania-separating-sc.html. The treatment is very similar for skin-picking. Hope to have a video about that in the near future. Thanks again for your comment and for watching!
Thank you. I always tried shifting my tick to less embarassing ones. But never figured to directly try something less noticable in opposite direction to competee with existing.
I started doing a vocal tic when I was in 4th grade, sorta like a throat clearing. My mom was convinced that medically something was wrong and took me to all these doctors and then decided I was stressed. Her solution- mock me. Told me I was grunting “like a pig” or would do the noise in return louder and repetitively. I was humiliated and ashamed. As a result I am now 33 and still do it, both when not anxious and worse when I am anxious or stressed, I do it so much that I don’t even realize I’ll it 90% of the time. This is the first time I have heard about this treatment and wish me luck because I would do anything to make it go away.
So sorry. What I find strange is that I can’t “make my tics” occur to show my doctor and how exhaustive and debilitating they are. I’m not certain, but my family has a tendency for nerve related diseases and pain from negative emotions- so I think my tics were at least triggered to start with trauma in my later life. At 50. I’m now 72.
I've done these coping techniques for a couple days and they already seen to be reliving. These tics are so aggressive though like they just keep coming back as soon as U get releif. I wouldn't wish these on anyone. My neurologist said I know they're annoying but nothing you can really do but go on meds so this video was awsome ti see
You two are excellent! Thank you for helping me begin to understand CBIT. Hopeful and searching for a specialist in CBIT/Tourette's for myself. As most know, Tourette's is not just a child/adolescent issue-it can def last into adulthood as it has for me. 😊 Thanks to you both!
Thanks for doing this video. I started aggressively eye twitching 2 months ago. This because I've been working on an active fire in Northern California. The smoke was thick and what remained was pure dust and ash. The blinking got worse evan after I changed locations. My tics usually aren't that bad but now I'm on the verge if getting fired because of them. I'll try this. I hope it works!
Since I’ve been told that I have generalized tics I began to keep observing my movements and actions and think if healthy people do that. So far I have calculated as much as 18. That’s crazy
I have a tick that is a weirs noise i make from my throat.. Kind of like a hicup mixed with a dog barking.. I hate it, its like having almost permanent hiccups that never go away.. Will be trying this.
@@lisac5999 did you ever find anything to make it go? I've had it for years and years and it's still here unfortunately :( I manage to disguise it in public a little but I wish u understood it
I have physical tics. My oldest son has physical tics, my daughter has tics and might be Tourette's, my youngest son has been diagnosed with Tourette's and has the worst tics out of the lot of us. We also have ADD/ADHD. I'm a single father, you can imagine that the house is a bit crazy!
My neck cracks and pops when I tic (in my neck for years) and it first started on a school bus being hyper and shaking my head as a kid purposely trying to get dizzy with a friend. From then on, I acquired tics in my neck.
I had neck cracking ticks too, it was very exhausting and sometimes it feels like the brain hurts when i cant tick properly. I started focussing my tics on something less exhausting, i normally do them on purpose thus shifting my focus on tickin something else rather than the neck tics, now i dont have my neck ticks not completely but like 2wice every month which is like a super achievement. Good luck!!
I've just seen this now, and it was kinda helpful for me. I have tics and it makes me breathe less than usual and it's really irritating and really hard to deal with. It happens to me almost everytime, everyday. My girlfriend is helping in a way she don't know, when I'm with people that's I'm not that comfortable with, my tics doesn't occur that much or sometimes I don't really have the urge to do it. And deep breathing helped too, I wish I had the resources to consult to a specialist for my tics. I did went to a psych but it didn't help that much, the medications she gave me, which are antipsychotics just made me really sleepy and made my whole body become numb. It started from mannerisms when I was still in grade school and now it's getting worse. And one of the thoughts that came to me is that my gaming addiction caused me this. Just wanted to share my story and hoping that someone could help me. I live in the Philippines.
Thank you so much for sharing your story! I know how hard it can be to work with someone who has expertise with tics. That's why I made this video. If you're struggling with a breathing related tic, deep breathing is likely the best competing response exercise. You'll want to "reverse" the tic. In other words, if your tic is about breathing in from the mouth, you'll want to breath in through your nose and then out through your mouth. If it's about breathing in through your nose, you'll want to breath in through your mouth and then out your nose. Best of luck!
this information is very enlightening, and not at all the overview that everyone gives. thank you for being thorough and giving other sources of info !
I've had tourette syndrome since I was about 1 year old. I have motor and vocal tics and along with that, I have ADHD. It's a complete struggle and it's sometimes painful.
superb and highly enjoyable. My tic only developed in my 50's, especially the last year, my 52nd, and is one of constant clearing of throat/chest. No matter how relaxed I am (eg after a mindfulness body scan), I have that frog in my throat, and when I walk and talk, its constant throat clearing. Not fun.
I’m 72 and my tics (nose sniffing, throat sounds and upper body shrugging) began after a mental breakdown at 50. I am getting worse and it’s terribly exhausting and embarrassing in public. I have Kaiser and live in Northern California. I was completely dismissed when I tried to talk to my doctor about it. I don’t know what to do. Thanks for your video.
Thank you so much for this video, i really needed this. My tics come a few times a year since I was a kid (now 21). In the last few years they became way stronger. Especially last year I experienced that they come on concerts, (I think because of the extreme sensations e.g. flashing lights, very loud music, everyone around me sshouting , singing and dancing) I couldnt speak a single word for hours because of blinking and nose wrinkling tics. I want to deeply thank you for this instructions. I feel so releaved and as I read all the comments here, the others are, too. You did a great video there!!
Been 6 years since I started ticking. Was 26 when they began, started when I was in a toxic job and under stress. I’m scared to go the doctor as in the UK they can take your driving licence away.
Hey Dr. I have OCD and believe touretic OCD. When I was a kid I had suddenly thought, "what is the weirdest thing I can do to freak someone out when looking at them". My brain thought, "open your eyes wide." And over 30 years later, I still do it. It happens more often when interacting with strangers because I am fighting the urge to do it because I know it is confusing to people. And it happens when I am more anxious, and I get anxious more than most I believe, so it is quite often. For example, walking by coworkers I have not talked to in a few days as the comfortability of previous conversation has warn off. I will even take different routes when moving around work to avoid people because I feel uncomforable around groups of people, even coworkers I know well. So, when anxious or uncomfortable, every time I make eye contact with people, my eyes quickly open wide and go back to normal, and this happens repeatedly throughout the conversation. I assume people must think I am either flirting or trying to inimidate. I know I had ticks prior, such as spreading fingers as far apart as they would go, raising my ears without touching them, opening my mouth as wide as it would go, scratching my teeth even though it was the opposite of what I wanted to do because it gave me chills like scratching a chalkboard, and repeating these things mulitple times in a row many times daily. I would appreciate any advice on how to combat this. I continue to struggle with severe OCD after mulitple therapists, and countless hours of research and ERP/CBT. I fully understand what I have, and while I can sometimes overcome the obsessions and ticks, they persist and are both severe when I am anxious or stressed.
the best way i found was if you are treated like everyone else and not someone else. I dont do it whenever i m with friends but do them when i meet new people
grimacing tics for me.. like the sun is always in my eyes. i try to relax my face. being a runner we were always trying to keep our faces relaxed and the key was to relax the eyebrows.
Tics started when I was about 13 or 14. I'm 37 now. Up until a year ago, I only had two motor tics that were pretty minor. I now have about 30 different tics and full blown Tourette's with tics nearly non-stop. It is exhausting and frustrating. Medication has had little effect. The problem I'm having is finding a provider for intervention therapy (small city with no one that deals with Tourette's)
@@armandodelagarza8038 Virginia. As an update since my comment was from over a year ago, my neurologist found a pretty good combination of medications that have it pretty well under control. I have been having tics for almost 20 years now, started in primary school, never went away. They keep aggravating year after year and getting in the way of a lot of things I do. First it was just a hand or the blinking of an eye, now it's like vocal tics, hands, arms, head, face, all of them combining in different orders. It's so consuming sometimes. Still they happen when I'm alone, in public I can manage them almost completely. But I'd like to know why, it's not Tourette and I know it has a lot to do with stress and anxiety, but even when I'm relaxed I have them, maybe less, but they're there :/

Do you experience tics and how do you cope with them?
I was so excited to see this video pop in my sub feed! :)
That was a very good way of explaining and making other experiencing tics for those who don't have them.

Thanks, The Psych Show guys.
worst is when you're not sure if someone mimics and makes fun of you or not.
I feel you bro, let's just keep fighting. What I do Is I always find ways to make myself calm.
My son is the same. Same time period. Head shaking almost constantly. It went away when we took him on holiday but 15 months later it's back
I get bullied at school for having tics, this was helpful. Thank you 🙏🏻
You get bullied at school currently?
I got sent to the PRINCIPAL OFFICE
hey I'm sorry for hearing that, you don't deserve that!
@@brandasar7913 I agree. I have had tics since I was 5 or 6 and now I’m 30. People tried to bully me but as soon as they tried, I always fought back. So it happened les and less. But I was always confident and studied not really bad so it helped to avoid bullying
@@brandasar7913bro, have you found the way how to get rid of tics or at least control it?

Glad to hear it! Thanks for watching!
I also have autism plus tourettes

What I always talk to my patients about is focusing on one tic at a time, usually the one that's most getting in the way, and build up your ability to manage that tic first.
same when I was 3 years old it started it also goes in waves one periode of the year I have more tics then other periodes

It's really cool to have both a Psychologist and a Neuroscientist giving input on the same stuff, to see how you approach the topic in slightly different ways

Yes Ahmed.
Hi!! This sounds like an OCD tic, you may want to seek help for OCD before trying to treat the tics themselves. Best of luck :))
I can relate to that. After almost 20 years of having tics I totally feel as a victim in that battle
These really helps.
hello how is it going now?

I've tics since I am 8 yrs old, and it's the worst thing ever. Side effects, headaches because eyes rolling, I will try these exercises. thanks
Have you tried massage therapy or meditation? Sounds like stress is a big trigger so maybe eliminating that stress will help you a lot?
Thank you for sharing and may the Higher Power continue to help you. 🙏 for me please my tics are bad right now.

Thank you so much! I have slight tics appearing sometimes, and this helped me control/stop my tics from coming. Deserved sub right there
The fact that you referenced the battle of Helms Deep to explain the approach makes you deserve a medal ❤
At 50. I’m now 72.
I have the exact same thing
I’ve been dealing with this kinda thing since my parents divorced. This was very good, and I liked the LOTR analogy!

Good luck!!
Awesome. I will never blink again for the rest of my life
I've just seen this now, and it was kinda helpful for me.
Best of luck!
this information is very enlightening, and not at all the overview that everyone gives. thank you for being thorough and giving other sources of info !

superb and highly enjoyable. My tic only developed in my 50's, especially the last year, my 52nd, and is one of constant clearing of throat/chest. No matter how relaxed I am (eg after a mindfulness body scan), I have that frog in my throat, and when I walk and talk, its constant throat clearing. Not fun.

THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS VIDEO.
i will try deep breathing to treat my vocal tics.

Sometimes talking about tics or seeing/hearing other people's tics can trigger your own tics.
Look into CBD oil
What state do you live in?

Are this practices effective if you have tics without any premonitions?
Well this was great and very informative thank you for sharing. She is so right there is a burning sensation when you try to keep your eyes open and those exercise really helped I'm going to try it for a week and I'll come back and share to see if it made a change
Hey darling! How’s your journey?
How about rolling eyes tics? My son had it.. what treatment he should do?
I've suffered tips for 70 years. Like blinking and breathing, you more often are not aware of it. All of this is easy for those that don't suffer tics.
