    When Ryan Stevens was just 15, his life changed forever. He developed tics, began having seizures known as 'tic attacks' and at the age of 21, was diagnosed with Tourette’s Syndrome. Ryan is now considered to have one of the most severe cases in the UK. He joins Holly and Phillip, alongside occupational psychologist Nancy Doyle, to talk about how his condition affects his daily life.
    Apologies in advance if you find anything offensive during this clip, however, we think it is important to allow Ryan to speak freely.

      @@sparrowhawk5673some people's Tourette's make it very hard to get a sentence out. Every 2nd or 3rd word will be interrupted by a medley of random words, movements, swear words, and sounds. Also, there are people with Tourette's who will SCREAM racial slurs or things like "I've got a bomb" when they're at an airport.

      Yes, it's like a huge tension in your body that you need to relieve. I can't speak for everyone, but for me, I begin to feel pressure and tension in my arms and legs. The pressure continues to build until I release my Tourette's word/sound/movement. However, it's not always like this. Half of the time, the sound/word/movement happens before I even know it's going on-- it happens, and then I realize it happened. It's out of my control.

    Despite having both Physically and Psychological Disabilities the Australian Government gave Me a job in the ultra secretive Australian Department of Defence, during which tenure the Australian Army attempted to recruit Me as a Colonel in the Royal Australian Corps of Military Police.
    Regrettably one of My Psychological Disabilities prevented Me from accepting, something I have regretted ever since.
    That was in 1988.

    I think my 8 year old son has tourettes, waiting for an appointment with his doctor to get a diagnosis. I've been watching videos of people with Tourettes and it's making me even more sure thats what he has. He will sometimes blink and scrunch his face incessantly and will randomly shriek or blurt things out. I feel horrible because I've gotten mad at him in the past for his behavior (like when he is yelling or throwing things) and I know if it turns out that he has Tourettes he doesnt necessarily have control over some of his behavior. I feel so bad, he always had some behavior that seemed sort of like tics but they never lasted long and he would go months without anything. Ever since his dad left it has been more noticeable and a lot more often and from what I read stress and PTSD can make it worse. I feel like such a failure not looking into this sooner for my son 😔

      I have now found out that my son most likely just has childhood tics and should outgrow them within the next few years but to keep an eye on it. I guess it is quite normal for kids his age to have some physical tics which I didnt know about before. I so appreciate all the lovely comments from everyone, that really makes me happy. ✌💕🇨🇦

    thats ridiculous that not many jobs accept people with tourette’s in the uk. So many jobs here in the us accept people with tourretes or maybe its just the state of california because i haven’t been outside of cali before. But the coworkers I have are so used to and understanding of my tourretes and the regular customers as well. That theres no issue. I think they should make more people aware of tourretes in other countries it would make life easier. I have tourretes and i have 2 jobs and go to school. They shouldnt make it a huge deal we can still do normal stuff if people dont make fun of tourettes.

    2:27 I am an epileptic and I have two kinds of seizures. My seizures are focal temporal lobe epilepsy… I am curious if he is allowed to drive or is he able to keep his focus on the road… I can appreciate being brave enough to bring this on television. I think I might have a difficult time telling the whole world about my seizures. This is a fantastic video Ryan. Thank you for presenting your point of view and answering questions. I thought your description of holding back a sneeze is absolutely perfect.

      Im epileptic with one of mine being focal temporal lobe epilepsy also and this didn't occur to me so also curious, I'm only guessing as he's fully aware and conscious during his tics that it would probably be ok. My understanding is that I'm not allowed to drive as I also lose consciousness regularly. Curious if it is ok for him

      Do you have Tourette's, too? I have both Tourette's and severe RLS. I wonder if they are linked? When I need to release a tic, I get RLS symptoms that are only relieved by making my usual sound + movement.

    • @antiHUMANDesigns
      @antiHUMANDesigns 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@groovydeath No, I don't think I have tourettes. I get some twitches, sometimes, but they're not tourettes-like, and and they're very minimal.
      I do have very severe RLS, possibly with what they call PLMD, periodic limb movement disorder.
      I don't only need to move my legs around at night like I'm on a bicycle, but I also get violent shakes as if someone tickles me under the foot. Completely involuntary muscle contractions.
      I reduce the frequency of RLS by controlling th etempearture. Often, it helps to have cold legs. I'v enoticed that being a bit warm can set them off.
