Great, honest review. I have been very happy with this line of paint. I have painted over 1000 homes in the past ten years, and I use the regal select very often - mostly on trim. It's nice and thick, spreads and covers well, has almost zero odor, and is very run resistant.

I absolutely love this paint. The first time I used the Regal select, I didn't even have to put a drop cloth and not one splatter on my floors. Of course, I had to be careful when rolling, but using this paint will not make me go back to cheap paints ever again. The coverage is excellent and I had zero drips and runs. The eggshell finish is beautiful!

I used regal select on three walls in a bedroom. Would definitely recommend it. Used Benjamin Moore aura on the fourth (accent) wall and thought it was bad. A few weeks later I went back and got a can of regal select to paint over aura even though aura is more expensive.

Hey Chris! I have watched your videos in the past to help me with various DIY painting projects. In this particular video you mentioned that you really liked this paint and it is comparable to two other interior paints that you will use. If you can disclose what are the other two interior paints that would recommend? Also, the project that I am getting ready to start is a nursery. The room already has trim, beadboard and chair rail that has is pine with clear coat on it. Do you recommend me removing all the clear coat to prime then 3 coats of finish paint or just lightly scuff the clear coat and then just do multiple top coats? We plan to paint both the trim work and the walls.

I’m a big fan of this paint in the matte finish. I think it looks great as a wall finish sheen. As far as paint and primer in one , I thought that is more of its ability to hide than as to sealing new work? I always prime new work or spot prime repair areas. I’m a certified professional homeowner with 30 years of experience and have enjoyed the channel for many years.

    • @NathanBeitler

Agreed. My favorite paint for use in my own home. Though I typically use the Ben Moore UltraSpec Low Sheen as by baseline paint for most projects, I use this upgraded paint in my own home. I use the BM Regal Select semigloss white as my baseline paint for trim and doors. Covers well, looks great, doesn't fade much over time, and applies really nicely with a brush with very little runs. I haven't found any trim paint that is more resistant to sagging than this. If I am going bright red or yellow, I go with the top-of-the-line Aura paint, but that is rarely needed. I've used the Aura Bath & Spa paint on many bathrooms - particularly those that have high-humidity issues.

I spoke to a Benjamin Moore Rep a few years ago and he explained, the claim of paint and primer in one, was due to the mil thickness of the product left over after the water evaporates once it dries. Due to the higher solid content there is a thicker mil layer left over from each coat, thus covers and seals the substrate better. Still an actual primer under certain circumstances, i.e. water stain, new drywall, smoke etc, should always be used. Great video as always! Thanks!

My dad had his own house painting business which he started in 1974 and he did a lot of high end jobs and the Regal line from BM is pretty much all he used and the results were always great. Flat on the ceiling, eggshell on the walls, and he used Satin Impervo (oil base) on the doors and trim. You pay a little more for their paint but it's worth every penny.
Question? Why would you use flat in a bathroom? For bathrooms my dad would use a Satin Impervo because it holds up well to the steam from a hot shower. BM also has a fairly new product called "Kitchen and Bath" which is a great product as well.

Ive used regal select for years. You can get more coverage than advertised with certain colors. Very good product.
I'm not much of a fan of the Regal Select Semi Gloss white though. Regal Classic semi gloss white was where it was at.
However, couple years ago Ben Moore changed something with the regal classic semi gloss white. The code at the base of a SG White regal classic can was N-7xx something. Now its C-333. The new cans were rolled out when I was half way through a new construction, so when my original stock of white was running out, I went and picked up enough to just finish the work. Subsequently I was unwittingly using the new C333 cans that no one said anything about when I already completed about half with the old stuff.
The trim that was painted with the new line was very obviously not covering well at all after the 2nd coat. There was a certain transparency to it like a very cheap semi gloss. The trim that was painted with the previous base code could almost pass off with a single coat.
Vendor was adamant that its the exact same product but anyone who wasn't even a painter at the site was easily picking out which rooms were painted with the new product (C-333) and which ones were with the old (N-7 something).
Just business as usual in the coatings industry.

Nice review, I would suggest trying the interior Ben product line. I often use Ben eggshell finish, if it drags I’ll add some extender, and it flows nicely. I would also suggest testing Benjamin Moore’s Sure Seal primer. I’ve never used an airless with either coating, strictly brush and roll application.

Great product for amateur painters. We flip houses, so I'm not a painting contractor. I probably have painted 20 houses over the last 4 years. I tried every line Lowes sells, which is essentially a bunch of SW rebranded. I also tried several SW lines as well. SW Cashmere is probably the closest competitor to Regal Select but I still think it's inferior. This product's finish is incredible and may be expensive, but so is three coats of bargain paint. Not to mention the time it saves me.

Hey Chris, thanks for all your awesome videos. I really appreciate what you're doing and the manner in which you're doing it. I'm with you about paint & primers - the primer should match the substrate and the conditions. My Australian painters believe anything Dulux AU says and think that their Weathershield (an amazing product, mind you) will bond to anything because it says so on the packaging - yeah, these are professionals!!! There's not one universal primer for a reason and therefore a paint/primer combo just can't work for everything. Now, to clarify, I'm sure Weathershield's primer works in certain cases, like painting already prepped surfaces or surfaces with paint on them - the primer will help it bind - but taking that paint and baking it in the constant Israeli sun, it just can't bind to the wood and the wood therefore fails after only a few years with a gorgeous ribbon of paint on top of it. If you can guess, I'm big into doing it the right way the first time - shortcuts aren't shortcuts, they will always cost you in the end (more time, more work, repeat business, fixing your mistakes.)

I used this paint before and liked it a lot. My only issue with it was that, like all flat paints, you can't touch it or it leaves a shiny spot on it. Washing/cleaning is not really good with it being flat, it just leaves a shiny spot. Flat is easy to touch up and I did that for a while but eventually even fresh paint that was leftover in the can was a little shiny and looked different than the rest of the wall. I eventually got tired of this and painted again, same color, with a finish that wasn't flat. Flat has best looks for sure but only works if you're in a house w/o kids touching the wall all the time. On my second paint job I used Aura and that is more washable than Regal Select.

Benjamin Moore Paint is really good. We as well here in Central California only have a few locations that carry the paint. Those aren't exactly the friend list of places, and I have been going there for years. I only use Ben when the customer requests it or the previous materials were Ben. Ive recently noticed they have the regal and advance I believe at Ace. I love my Ace but I have a hard enough time at my actual paint stores so that isn't ideal.
One Material I would say to try out as far as materials is PPG they're one of the oldest paint companies from my knowledge. They are somewhat undercover meaning they made paint for companies. High-ish end paint and they have a variation of it at Home Depot for a few years now (IN my area). Its a cheap and great alternative for DIY I believe. I don't mind Home Depot as a professional but like Ace it isn't Ideal. As far as the PPG goes the quality is great for the price.

Benjamin Moore is the best paint period. It makes a novice (me) look like an experienced painter. The best tip is that their mis-tints go for $9 a gallon and $2 a small can. There is no better deal in the paint universe- They typically go for $70 a gallon, so stop being so picky and choose the $9 gallon...you can find a selection of mis-tints in every store that sells Benjamin Moore, so if you do not see them in the back corner, simply ask the guy behind the counter.

I'm curious if your BM recommended this. K547 is really meant for ceiling / low traffic areas. If I were spec'ing Regal as the product line I might at minimum go with K552, the Ulti-Matte. But if Im being honest I would be going with K532 Aura Bath and Spa. Really I'm surprised you were able to find K547. Most retailers find this a redundant product as every line of benjamin moore has a flat at lower price points. Anyways, interesting choices no doubt. I've been selling Benjamin Moore for over 10 years. No associate I know would let that leave the store without expressing concern for the intended use. Take care.

Hey Chris! I probably used every brand of paint in the past 35 years! Premium paint depends on properties. Better quality Acrylic, titanium, solids, binders, resins, pigment etc. If your paying top dollars for any top brand paint it should cover in one coat if you are going to a similar colour. Rule of thumb 2 coats is mostly required for coverage durability and washability. Cheers! The gooseneck guy!

@@Avital4414 I wouldn't even know where to start. The only place you'll get drips would be either from cutting in with a ton of paint on your brush, brushing or spraying semigloss for trim work, or spraying walls. So, I back roll my cuts with a 3inch roller. I spray my trim with a mist coat then a finish coat. And I back roll when I spray walls. It's a matter of the approach. With back rolling, the only risk for drips is in spraying the trim. But I've been doing that for so long, I haven't had a drip in 20 years. That's about all I could say.

The flat paint performs way worse then super paint. It's really weird going on but doesn't splatter much. It burnished easy same as super paint. But I only got about 200-250 sqft per gal and costed me more then super paint so I'll never use the flat again. I since switched to aura matte and it's worth the $62
