Thanks for this video. I’ve used many gallons of Emerald matte and I really like its hide properties, it’s like rolling on wallpaper. I still do two coats though. The matte also helps hide imperfections well.
You are most welcome good sir. Thanks for watching! I’ll be working with Emerald all week 🫡
Super vassar brothers great videos been watching for awhile now love your videos. Looking to start a painting business just looking on how to estimate for interior paint. I’m having trouble pricing interior jobs. Great job on the videos once again. 👍
Thanks for reaching out!
Estimating is a skill that you’ll get better with, the more you do it and then pay attention to how things went.
When you’re looking at an interior job take notes on what the client wants. Take pictures of the room with your phone. Measurements are also useful.
When you write up the estimate be specific as to what the job includes and does not include. Use the square footage and your experience to calculate your material cost. Then take an educated guess as to how long you think it’s going to take you to complete the work. Most people underestimate how long it will take. Multiply how many hours you think it’ll take by your hourly rate then add that to your material cost.
You’re going to want to add a certain % to that total number so that you’re actually making a profit. 40% is a good percentage to shoot for. Look at that final number then ask yourself “would I be willing to do this work for this amount of money?” If the answer is yes then send it, if it’s a no then adjust accordingly.
Another Great Video! I too have started recommending the Matte finish and use it a lot in the Duration, but have always use Satin in the Emerald. Now I can’t wait to try out the Emerald in Matte. Thanks for all
Your Great content Keep it coming!
BTW. The Ben Moore people have been trying to bring me over from S-W So I used in a Record Executives office And You are so right. It’s kinda like working with mayonnaise. It covers well, but I don’t think it’ll ever be my go to paint Although I do like Advance and STIX.
Benny Moore has some good stuff that I use, but their Regal line kinda sucks since the new formulation. Emerald matte for the win right now 🤙
I’m SOOO glad I watched your two video’s on paint. This one and Benjamin Moore. I was going to go with BM until I saw these. I now believe I will go with Sherwin Williams. Thank you for this information! It is very expensive to paint, and not a good experience if you choose hard to work with paint.
You are correct. It’s extra frustrating if you spend a lot of money and the product is still hard to work with. I’m glad you found the videos helpful!
Great content, again! Would really appreciate your review of Sherwin Williams Moisture Vapor Barrier Sealer Primer vs more standard PVA sealer primer.
It appears that that product was designed for use in manufactured homes. I don’t have any experience with it. Looks like a pretty standard primer based on the spec sheet.
I dont know if you remember but this is the paint you recommended to me to use on my granddaughters room that had black ,gold and red paint. She was going thru a harry potter stage. Lol! Anyways i took your recommendation and used emerald wall paint. The stuff is fantastic! It gave me exactly the fiinish i wanted. Ive discovered when using high quality paint i always hesitate to apply a second coat because the first coat looks really nice to me. However nomatter how nice i think one coat looks ,the second coat makes it even better. Not sure why this is but it just works. It may be physiological but the second coat is definitely worth it. The Emerald went on really smooth and honestly makes my mediocre paint skills look even better. Lol! Thanks for the advice. 😊
I’m glad it turned out well! We always do 2 coats on everything. There’s quite a few reasons 2 coats looks better. In general it contributes a lot to the surfaces having a uniform looking finish.
Thanks for watching and commenting!
Love your videos. I've loved using Emerald around my house. I had to use another brand for a color we had in our bathroom and the other brand was absolutely night and day worse off in coverage and application annoyances.
One thing I've found with Emerald is I am spending an eternity at the sink trying to get all the paint out of the brushes. The tradeoff is worth it though! It's my go-to, but I'm just an occasional interior painter for my own house.
Oh yeah, the matte and flat look the same to me when I compared the two in a light grey. I ended up going with matte all around and I have no regrets. Thanks again for all your advice on the channel!
Try dampening the brushes with water before you start painting, it helps make cleaning the brushes easier
hmmm, I haven't had that experience with washing out Emerald. I use Corona Cortez's. I'm glad it's working out for you in your house!
Thanks for the content. How about for plastered walls? Will this work out good?
Yup. It’ll still work well on plaster 🫡
Thank you! Do you have any durability testing videos of this Matte version? Thanks
I do not but I’ve used it quite a bit. It’s decently wipeable and touches up reasonably well. There’s a generally a tradeoff between the finish quality (how the paint looks) and durability.
When painting over 60s paneling would you recommend this paint? It’s in a kitchen and I’m planning on using white.
I’m guessing it’s wood paneling. You will probably want to prime the paneling first before using any finish paint. Fresh Start from Benjamin Moore is a great primer. If you’re getting a lot of bleed through (particularly if the paneling has a lot of wood knots in it) then you may need to spot prime with BIN shellac. Once it’s primed then you can use whatever finish paint you want. Emerald matte is a great option and my current favorite wall paint.
Just bought a new construction home last Spring. The builders painted the walls with SuperPaint in Flat, and trim with Solo in Semi-Gloss.
Its a tract home so as you would expect the drywall mudding and baseboard/casing finishing is a rush job at best.
I've been going room by room, fixing the drywall issues and repainting the trim with Emerald. Since I am brushing it on its not as "nice" as the builders spray job but man... Emerald is soooo much nicer. Its like going from a basic white to like a white pearl or something. Since its urethane it has a glow to it.
Were going to paint all the walls in Emerald as well next year. I can't wait
Emerald Urethane is excellent for trim. That’s our current go-to trim paint. Solid choice good sir. Good luck with the rest of it!
@@SuperVassarBrothers Uh-mazing
I’m having the interior of my house repainted. Going from a dark gray color to an off white (SW 7568 Neutral Ground), would two coats of Emerald cover the dark gray or should a primer be used first? If so, what primer would you recommend?
You should be good with 2 coats of emerald. It handles color shifts really well. That’s my assessment without seeing how dark of a gray that you’re trying to cover. If two coats doesn’t work in an area then I’d go with fresh start primer from Benjamin Moore. That’s a great product for big color shifts.
If you were going to paint a bathroom where steamy showers are taken would you use emerald satin or duration satin?
We use emerald matte in the majority of the bathrooms that we do. If it’s now we’ll ventilated and you’re really concerned about the moisture then you may want to bump up to satin
Would you recommend emerald flat over matte for a media room that will be painted in Caviar black? I’m not a professional, and we have a heavy knockdown texture on walls and ceiling
Yeah, I’d go with flat. I think that’ll work out well for you. Good luck with your project!
@@SuperVassarBrothersthanks super helpful! Going with flat in the media and matte for an accent wall at the entryway.
@@SuperVassarBrotherswent with flat and indeed it came out very well. It looks sickkkkkk
I know garage walls have more touch ups. Etc. You reccomend matte or flat for garage walls. In the emerald line
I used matte in my garage and in the majority of my clients’ garages. Flat is fine for the ceilings but I prefer matte on the walls even in garages.
My other walls have slight stipple but Emerald goes on extremely flat, just can't get any texture out of this. Probably not good for flat walls if you don't want your walls to be completely flat.
I'm not sure I understand your comment. The stipple pattern is determined by what roller cover you use. Our preference is a 1/2 inch or 3/8 inch Pro Doo-Z FTP from Wooster.
Could you tell me the name of the color you painted the room at around 3:54. That looks like the color I’m looking for but can’t seem to find. I sure would appreciate it!!! Thank you so much!!!
That’s Sherwin Williams Lagoon SW 6480 in Emerald matte. I’ve got that in a few rooms in my house and it’s a great color.
@@SuperVassarBrothers Oh boy! Thank you so much for getting back with me so fast!!! You don’t know how much I appreciate it!!!
I painted my basement using the Super Paint by SW. I thought it was good but I’m new to painting so I don’t really have a comparison. What’re your thoughts on the super vs emerald?
Super paint is decent. Emerald is a few tiers above it in Sherwin Williams product line. Emerald is quite bit better than super paint but it’s also more expensive. Here’s my breakdown of Sherwin Williams product line if you’re interested: Don't Make This Terrible Mistake: Sherwin Williams Interior Paints Unveiled

Watched it! Thank you.
I was leaning toward aura before this video. I figured aura was 60 per gallon ? I was planning on 1 coat buying 5 gallon bucket and pain ceiling and wall white with a dark trim opinion? Emerald is better? Thanks
I am not a fan of Aura for a variety of reasons. Emerald matte is my go-to wall paint currently. You’re welcome to do what you want, but we almost always do two coats regardless of the product we are using. That gets us the best results and a uniform finish.
@SuperVassarBrothers
Thank you for answering my question and for the advice. I will use emerald now .
Is the designer series. In eggshell as good ?
I’ve only used it once and I used the flat version. It was decent to work with.
Just finished a room with flat emerald in a medium dark purplish gray (the wife’s office 🙄) looks amazing! I’m a fan of flat paint (I think behr’s eggshell of 22 years ago ruined me🤮) and this stuff goes on smooth as can be and looks like velvet when it’s done. Im just a diy er but it’s great stuff IMO, love it.
Is matte vs flat more of a preference thing or is matte more durable? I just love how soft this paint looks in flat, I have 0 idea what matte looks like, more like eggshell? 🤷🏻♂️
So the Emerald Matte looks like a true matte finish. It's got more sheen to it that the flat (obviously), but it still has a soft looking finish. It's what we use for the majority of the interior painting that we do. It is more durable than the flat, so it holds up a bit better to being scuffed, wiped, etc... That being said, I am also a big fan of the Emerald Flat. We use that in certain areas. It also looks awesome with darker colors.
@@SuperVassarBrothers Awesome, thanks for replying! I was at my SW store today and got their sheen pamphlet, it does still have that soft look to it. Some paints look plastic like with a little more sheen and I can’t stand it. I think I’ll finish my bedrooms in flat but definitely go with matte in my kitchen, living room, hallway, and bathrooms. Thanks again!
Quick stupid question! Since I started my own small painting business, what do you actually do with left over paint? I guess you just left it at the house logically right?!
Awesome video and definitely great paint by the way…
If the paint has been tinted then we leave the partials at the clients house in case they want to touch up stuff later. The untinted ceiling and trim paint we keep with us. We’ll leave them a small amount of those if they want it for touchups.
Switch your rollers to the purdy ultra finish 3/8 on the walls. Best rollers I’ve ever used
We used Purdy’s for a long time including the ultra finish. Then we had a bad run with them. The were shedding a ton or falling apart. Then we tried the Pro-doo-Zs and haven’t had a reason to switch back.
Nice video 👍 I recently painted a few rooms for a client using the Benjamin Moore Regal Select Crisp Linen color going over a medium green. I struggled to get it to cover well, ended up having to do 3 coats which still had slight bleed through especially on the cut in areas. Do you think the Emerald would be a better choice? I might give it a try on my next client next week.
Regal Select is my all time fave paint, never had a problem. Of course whites are always tricky and without a proper primer even the best paint might need more than two coats going over certain colors.
I think you’d probably have a better experience. The most recent formulation of Regal Select has been having issues in the field. I’ll be doing a video on it shortly.
If you have a big color shift then you may want to prime first. I’ve had to do three coats of emerald to get a uniform finish with some colors but it’s unusual.
I use to really like regal select until they changed the formulation recently. There’s been quite a few issues with it especially the eggshell finish. Hopefully they’ll adjust it in the near future.
YOU should have used a primer first since you were going lighter over a much darker wall. Then you would only need 2 coats of the BM Crisp Linen afterwards.
Way back I used Sapolin and Dutch Boy. Con Lux for big jobs. Then switched to Benjamin Moore, never liked Sherwin Williams. Now finally Behr makes good paints.
Things go back and forth with formulations changing constantly. Most paint manufacturers make some good paints and not so good paints these days.
Good advice to wait for sales. $55 a gallon at 40% off and these sales happen often.
That’s the move!
Sherwin Williams not liking free marketing... That's not like them at all. It's not like they have former employees that started their own paint company out of spite because of such a thing.
🤫
Have you used behr dynasty ? It’s actually really amazing imo
I have heard that it’s decent but I haven’t used it yet. It comes in around the same price point as Emerald for most folks.
@@SuperVassarBrothers id love to see your review of it, I was completely shocked at how good it was
Why do paint companies release new products under the same name as other lines they have. We love using Emerald for exterior trim. But why name interior wall paint emerald? They did it with Duration also and when it happened it confused us.. i remember a guy we work with coming back to the outside job with a can of interior duration! The paints have nothing to do with each other.
Very true. Good thing they’re very clear about all the different sheens…🤦♂️
"Not Sponsered" however he does buy it for half the walk in price. Which is typical of any review you see from a contractor using Sherwin-Williams. Take their recommendations with a grain of salt, would they use it if they had to pay what normal people pay?
Hmmm, I pay the price that I pay because I’ve purchased hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of product from them over the last 20 years of owning and operating a painting company. Contractor pricing from companies like Sherwin Williams is based on how much product you go through. That’s also why I recommend getting the products I recommend when they’re one sale.
I like the old formula
What did you like better about the old formula?
@@SuperVassarBrothers coverage and durability.. finishing like wall paper
Would like to give it a try, but ANY paint over $50/gal is a rip off.
There’s quite a few products that are over $50 a gallon nowadays. You can get emerald for right around $50 a gallon if you get it on sale. It all depends on what your project is and what level of finish quality you’re wanting. Some top tier paints are worth the money and some aren’t. Emerald is excellent, but if it’s not in your price range then no worries. Try something else.
This is the worst paint I ever used. Does not cover well; requires primer + 2 coats. What a waste of time. Used matte finish.
I’m sorry it was an unpleasant experience for you. I can’t really comment without knowing the details of the color shift. We always plan for two coats.
I applied mine the same way you did and it turned out great and touches up well....I used Satin
