  • The Steam Deck is super impressive being able to play modern PC games, retro games on emulators and more. But it's not perfect. At least not yet 😉

    Some viewers are upset that I want GOG games to run on Steam Deck. Trust me, that comes from a place of LOVE for their site & what they do. They sell DRM Free games so it would be awesome if they worked, right? Or is that asking too much?

      No not at all, cus why would asking for a version of your game you can play anyway shape or form you want too be too much to ask. You have a Big point you make and it makes sense you would want to play them on steam deck.

    • @DWOMT

      Not sure why people would be upset by that. I don't have GOG, but there's older PC games they offer that I would like to buy and run on my Steam Deck. If GOG officially supported the Steam Deck, I'd create an account and they'd get my money.

    • @Dracossaint

      I don't think that's asking too much, but if they did they'd be supporting their competitors product. While also getting some stuff working on linux/contributing to proton, which is kinda a steam product as well (not technically, but their a hugge contributing force)
      They have a bit of a fickle relationship with Linux to an extent people made things like heroic launcher and lutris. I think people get a little too overzealous and passionate sometimes and they're worried about something getting framed in a bad light that they love.

      The Steam controller was a bit of a flop though, good idea/intentions, badly executed. I mean I got mine for a couple £ because Valve were trying to get rid of their inventory(along with a Steam Link) One mistake they made was talking about how the touchpad would be better for fps games than a 2nd analog stick, and it just isn't, if you've ever played an fps on a laptop using the touchpad rather than an external mouse, you'll know what it's like. They should have spoken about how they gyro makes it easier to aim in fps games, but they either didn't realise or didn't care until it was too late, and the ABXY buttons were too low on the pad.(and too small, and to the left instead of the right of the secondary pad)

    What Valve are doing with Proton on Steam is nothing short of a miracle and it will take years/decades for their whole library to be tested and working under SteamOS as well as it does on Windows. The GOG store is just too big and even if their launcher gets ported to the device, just the thought that they can do the same about their game catalog is unimaginable. However as Linux goes, where there's Wine there's always a way.

    • @spicydeath82
      @spicydeath82 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      yes, to be deck verified it would take forever to go through gog's library. but since proton doesn't always need per game tweaks, there's a good chance most of the games will work but will need a keyboard and mouse plugged in to play, or special mappings set up in steam.

      Idk about your timescale. Like technically yeah, but basically every title people care about will be tested in months as it's community sourced. I'm sure some stragglers will go under tested or just not tested full stop, but valve aren't testing every single title in house

    • @pilcrow182
      @pilcrow182 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Ironically most of the games I’ve tried that were “unchecked” seem to already work on there. It’s mostly that the library has to be “verified” for working, so I see it taking a lot less time than people might think.

  • @SuhailRehman
    @SuhailRehman ปีที่แล้ว +42

    I think one of the amazing aspects of emulation on the Steam Deck is the fact that the controller lends itself very nicely to multiple console generations, and the strong community support for projects like EmuDeck make installation, configuration and playing emulated games on the deck much easier as time progresses.

  • @wickersticks
    @wickersticks ปีที่แล้ว +208

    Valve really knocked it out of the park. I'm a primarily PC gamer, who mostly uses steam, so this console feels like it was made for me. Most my library is there, and everything has worked flawlessly for me (except sonic mania, which was defaulting to a weird aspect ratio, but I fixed it in settings in 5 seconds sooo). I hope Valve continues support and reiterates on this idea, because I think it's one of the best things they've done in years

    • @PutthePCinmyHands
      @PutthePCinmyHands ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Yep a lot of the fixes are very easy but I think my problem is when people start doing comparisons to OneX and Aya devices whicb have WAY more issues running games that people hardly mention. On VSD sometimes all you need to do is change Proton.

    • @wickersticks
      @wickersticks ปีที่แล้ว +13

      @@PutthePCinmyHands I just don't think people understand how manufacturing works either. A company like Valve is making considerably more Steam Decks than a company like Aya of Ayn. Valve is producing around 20k a week vs other companies making around 1k production total. It's the same thing when people call the Steam Deck a Nintendo Switch killer. Nintendo production capabilities are considerably higher than Valves. It is physically impossible for Valve to outsell the switch and it is physically impossible for Chinese alternatives to outsell the steam deck.
      That isn't even getting into how important steamOS is for making the experience GOOD. Making a portable machine is half of the issue, the OS experience needs to match, and Valve is the only company providing both. Not to mention having such a high install base for the product means you are more likely to find online resources for your issue and how to solve it. Inevitably someone along the way encountered the same bug and shared the solution online

      TBH I never really thought about it but I guess it makes sense. Even though all of the DOSBox games in their library would be dead simple to make compatible with Linux (there's DOSBox for Linux), I guess their primary market by far is still Windows based, and as a business I guess it would be hard to say "only certain titles have Linux support". If they did it they'd probably have to go all out, and although DOSBox titles should be dead simple to do, the rest wouldn't be and would have a massive cost and support overhead.

    I'd be interested in a second generation device but for now I think the small startups out of China are a bit ahead of this. I've opted for the Ayn Loki after having my fill of the GPD Win when my last device didn't work out (been a loyal GPD customer for their previous Win devices but they haven't stepped up their game as the landscape began to grow around them).
    I actually like these as UMPCs moreso than as strictly gaming devices. Usually when I take one with me I also have a keyboard and a mouse to use with it on a stand as a regular PC.

    • @FireMrshlBill
      @FireMrshlBill ปีที่แล้ว

      Ya, the Loki and the Loki Max (? whatever the 6800u version is called) look good. I am supposed to get my Deck in by end of Q2 (so hopefully in the next 3-4 weeks), however, if its a bit too big for my liking (already had a friend sell theirs because of that), I may put in a pre-order for the Loki Max or Aya Neo 2 with the 6800u and sell the Deck when I get the new one.
      Also interested in future generations with more support for eGPU so I can cut out the PC's on my TV's and just stick to a main PC and a handheld. I know the Intel based GPD handhelds will dock with a eGPU, but not as impressed with the Intel iGPU they have in handheld mode, but I do like their sliding screen to reveal keyboard design. Hopefully this isn't just a one and done by Valve to push their OS.

    Personally, I think judging the steam deck for its ability to run Gog, Windows, or emulation games is a bit unfair. Steam is being very consumer friendly to allow competitors to run on their device. Yo have to jail break other devices to do the things it lets you do freely. i think the steam deck should be judged for how well they are getting their steam library to operate, and everything else is icing on the cake. There is plenty on steam to keep you occupied.

      The fact is the games run fine, it's just that GoG is not supporting Linux so Galaxy can't be installed in any capacity.
      It's just a reminder that GoG is a business and not your friend, fact is their website only pushes the "DRM Free" aspect because it's good for marketing, thus the reason that these days it doesn't really push that hard on it because the sentiment is that "lightweight" DRM is fine. (Fact is GoG has DRM too and that's kinda my point, requiring you to login to prove you purchased software in order to download it is DRM, HumbleBundle is more DRM free on the titles that have DRM free available).
      The fact that this company that is all about shedding the shackles of DRM doesn't have a linux client is pretty telling that it's all business decisions. Developing for Linux isn't "profitable" for them, so they're not going to bother. Supporting steam deck will only end up helping them in the long game, but in the short term it will be a cost to benefit customers that have already bought games, and they sure as hell don't care about them.
      The fact that once I got steam deck set up I was able to hit the power button to switch it to "desktop" mode was amazing, I wish the desktop mode was better built for being a mobile platform but hey it was there and doesn't take too much effort to piece together and get emudeck running, hell I can even download all the illegal roms I want directly to it, no jailbreaking or routing necessary. Steam made something special here, and the only reason gog says they won't support it... is because Steam is their competitor, what they want people to do is not buy the steam deck, and by the time they realize they would profit off of supporting the steam deck, it will be too late for them as a company. Dealing with steam.dll DRM has and always will be fundamentally more worth it than dealing with buying games on GoG.

Honestly, it'd be useful if heroic launcher just used their own native dosbox for DOS games, at least as a workaround option. Obviously Wine shouldn't be having whatever issue it's having with the bundled dosbox but there's generally benefits to using a non-crusty old dosbox version anyway. A game which maybe previously had performance issues could potentially run better or with lighter resource needs (better battery life) under a newer dosbox.

    I wish my experience with the deck was as smooth, it's been more of a nightmare. I've been sent three Decks, forth on the way, and they've all been bad. I was apart of the Q2 Crew and got mine about two months ago. That one would boot loop on the initial update until finally the internal storage just stopped working. Got an RMA, sent that back, got a new one. This Deck got through the update alright, but it would randomly say the battery was depleted and shut down. This was fresh off the charger and at 100%. If I kept the charger plugged in, it would stay on and I'd watch the battery go from 100% to 0% to 60%, all over the place in a span of minutes. Got another RMA, sent it back, got a new one, same exact problem. Now I've sent this one back and I'm waiting on my fourth.
    And I know your first instinct is think I must doing something wrong. 1) Other people have reported having the same problems I've had and 2) I'm only taking the thing out of the box and plugging it in.
    I dunno, man. It works if I leave it plugged in, and I do love it. But the defeats the point of it being portable. I could return it, but I've already sunk so much time, energy,and money into this thing. And before anyone says it: If you're Deck is working perfectly, awesome. I hope you're enjoying it. Still waiting to be able to order mine... I thought I got my reservation in pretty early, but I guess not as early as I thought. The expected availability was listed as "Q2 (April-June) 2022". Well, it's now almost halfway into June and not a peep. I'm thinking the Steam Deck 2 will be taking reservations and I'll still be waiting on my Steam Deck 1... Also, your video reminded me that I need to get a large memory chip for storage, so appreciate that!

    Someone may have already posted something similar, but there is a GOG community discussion forum page called "Linux, DOSBox & GOG DOS Games" where users have posted a fix for getting older GOG games running on Linux. The discussion is a bit older, but it might help you get things running on the Deck.

      Looks like Heroic is going to add more support for the DOSBOX stuff, which is great. 👍

    Thanks for testing older games with this. Most reviews seem to only really cover modern stuff, but I always thought devices like this would shine the most with emulation and 90s-2010s PC games. (the trackpads would be amazing for stuff like Jagged Alliance 2, and other tactical isometric games).
    I hope they eventually release a smaller version. I like the idea of this device, but it's way too big to take with me in my pocket. Something Vita size would be great!

    HI! Great Video! I noticed that my emulator run slow whenever i have 30 fps turned on. Try to run those games a 60 fps and see if they work (if you haven't done it already)! Keep up the great work

    Mine is finally on the way and should be here Monday! I'm going to go on the fringe and install windows immediately. I know many will frown at this but I want to use my portable LCD and keyboard w/ it in desktop mode when I travel to get the most bang out of my buck. Hoping we get dual boot soon. Great review! New subscriber!

    I'm playing all the wing commanders on GOG now and using a gamepad with mapped controls. It's soo good but occasionally you need to mess around when the joystick buttons conflict with how you want to use them. Example, i want to roll right with right bumper but it's premapped to joystick button 2 in Dosworld so it simply will not work without changing joystick to keyboard then mapping that way.

    One thing you could try for some of the DOS based GOG games is running them from another computer on hand and installing Moonlight.
    I aim to try and use Moonlight very extensively when I get mine (including through Wireguard for remote play) so we'll see how things hold up, but it might be something to try since supporting them natively is a mixed bag it seems.

    Love this hands-on review on this fantastic machine. You go beyond the surface on this, and it opens up some pretty cool things to do with the Steam Deck. As if it wasn't already cool enough as it is!
    One comment, and I know I am nitpicking here. 13:35, Proton isn't an emulator. It is a reverse-engineered Windows runtime environment that runs the games natively by translating system calls into Linux-compatible equivalents. Translating calls is a lot faster and more efficient than emulating said calls. Emulation is mostly used when trying to run code compiled for one architecture on a different architecture.
    Specifically Wine (or Proton, which is Wine with a big beautiful cherry on the top), can't run ARM software since it simply translates Windows calls into Posix calls. But they are still x86 calls. Same goes for DX -> Vulkan. It's the same hardware running beneath it all. It's only the layout, so to speak, of the API that differs. So as long as that can be translated, it works pretty much natively. Which is also why so many games run really well with Proton. They absolutely wouldn't with an emulator.
    HOWEVER! In the case of GOG games, it sometimes actually IS emulation, since GOG games often use DosBox, which uses an entirely different architecture for many things. And therefore emulation is required. So it would seem it actually runs those games using Wine, which run the Windows version of the DosBox emulator. Kind of funny when you think about it, since DosBox has native Linux support... :D

    I will definitely try it when my Steam Deck comes back from repair - but on Manjaro Linux, I have Terminal Velocity (a DOSBox game) running via Lutris. Worth trying that instead of Heroic. Also, looking at your pinned comment: GOG is great, I would love to see official support for the Steam Deck.

    Your review is extremely promising. If it already is impressive that is a really good sign. It is still so early in the consoles lifespan that I just know there are going to be many updates and eventually it will run damn near anything. I definitely want one now. 👍👍👍
