@@jangounchained2942 You can get 10+ hours on the Oled Steam deck playing Stardew Valley, the battery in the OLED is better than the Switch, and the Steam deck doesn't have any forced updates the steam deck is a console that can play PC games it's not on all the time you can turn off the steam deck and come right back to your games and the battery will not have dropped you sound like a Nintendo shill right now
Owning a steam deck has completely changed travelling for me. I'm weirdly excited about long plane rides because it just means I get to play video games uninterrupted for a few hours. Didn't realize how badly I wanted this.
I own both. Both are great in their own ways. The ALLY is always my go to to grab and play while home and plugged in. But my steam deck comes with me when traveling. Both are amazing
Same here. I use the Deck for Steam and Emulation up to PS2-XBOX and the Ally for everything non-Steam and PS3-360 and heavy Switch emulation; also as a second PC.
Maaan, that's a great video, exactly what I needed! No info that has been said thousands times, only the main points...but even after the video I still haven't decided which one to buy
It's a really tough choice honestly. They're both really good at certain things. If we could just combine them and get the best of everything. A 1080p OLED with VRR, great performance and good battery life would be 👌
I understand... it's an easy choice. it took me 4 months to decide that I want to ally next. But a great tip is, look at what you like, and you will find the answer you are looking for :) And remember... things change all the time. you are either with it or after the ride and more.
Handheld is all about convenience, unfortunately running windows is not. I bought the ally and returned it 3 days later, took too much time to set it up and update all the misc drivers. Picked up a steam deck and little to no effort I can start a game and enjoy. if I want high quality gaming, I go back to my gaming PC at home. Handheld is all about portability and ease of use. The Steam OS does just that. Plus the community support is just amazing. You can also install windows to run on the deck for games like COD warzone or using other games launchers too.
Buying a steam Deck then installing a windows just to play your game? No way there is already a windows handheld never had a problem with windows on a handheld you guys make it like its a big deal even tho its not. Its a bit dumb to buy a deck just to install a windows.
lol installing a windows on steam deck will even crash your steam deck don’t try it bro😂. Will be selling my oled SD as it’s not playing triple A games. Will go for Rog now
@@nathanjuan6042 I did that lol it's not bad but yeah it doesn't take full advantage to the APU, and DPT. I agree that if they just want to play right away, that's the steamdeck steam os no doubt. I've been using windows for years so I know my way round it. for people coming from consoles... they are not gonna like it. I sticked with the steamdeck because of the trackpads and the gaming mode, but based on my needs I'm getting the Ally next, and staying.
5:01 it's sooo true! there's tons of videso saying *don't get the ally, get the steam deck/oled don't get the steam deck, get the rog ally z1 extreme/z1 don't get the ally, get the legion go and so on* some points I get it, but man! people really need to chill... if the guy it's already thinking on the ally or deck or hell anyneo, LET THEM TRY ! if I were a tech reviewer, I would never say don't get this and that period. I would say don't get it if you or if you, coz the reality is... there's different people, and things change. Thanks for pointing this out!
I've got both but don't really see the need to have both as they do 90% the same as each other - debating which one to get rid of but it's really hard to choose!
I have both and i say i pick ally more often. Display and performance is superior. Problem is battery life and gamepad sometimes not detected after power on. I pick steamdeck only if i go out.
I agree with all the points however I would like to add that picking Steam Deck over Rog Ally will not forbid you from using it as your desktop replacement. Just like how Rog Ally is a full fledged windows machine, Steam Deck is a full fledged Linux machine. You can't go wrong with either devices and as far as I can tell, if you know what you are doing and if you are okay with linux, SteamOS is arguably the best Linux operating system there is right now. I can't wait for it to be released for everyone's personal use. Both are fantastic handhelds, the future will only be brighter for handheld gaming, I am so excited.
I almost included that in the video. I had recorded it and cut it out. It can be used as a PC for some people, but I think it's just a small amount of people that would be okay with using Linux as their only machine. For those people though, the Steam Deck could work. The only other hindrance is the CPU performance is pretty low, so more demanding applications could struggle a bit.
Unfortunately no... not for normal users. Linux it's great on the steamdeck for gaming, but everything else... I've been in this hole it's a pain. I'm not a pro Linux user, and I don't wanna be, but I've learned a fair bit to make the programs I need to run on linux with wine or proton. It's not worth to hassle to me, and for most people it's not as well. I know you are gonna say I'm wrong, or defend Linux, but it's not ready to be a full fledge PC.
Both are cool. I wouldn’t be able to do handheld gaming without the trackpads though, once you set them up with steam input they are incredibly useful. My friend has an ally though, they’re cool as well!
Now that you can get the ROG Ally for around $510 open box and the Steam Deck Oled for $549 new it really makes it a hard choice. I want the power and resolution of the ally but I want the battery life, Steam OS, and Oled screen of the Deck. But I think you stated it best, if you have a laptop or pc already that can play demanding games then a steam deck would be great for on the go gameplay. If you don't have a pc or laptop for demanding games then the ROG ally would be great choice for that. Since I have a gaming laptop already I think I'm going to have to go with the steam deck. I just trust Value and the steam community to keep the handheld alive for many years to come.
I think you'll like the OLED :) If you were looking to replace your Laptop, the Ally can "almost" do that. But I think it's worth waiting for the next generation of handhelds as I'm assuming they'll have a bit more power ⚡️. And the OLED is a lot of fun to just pickup and play with older, and even some more demanding titles.
I have a rtx of the 4090 desktop and a powerful laptop and I use most the ally. Many of my fav games can not be played in the Steam deck and I found the battery the same in those devices...maybe if you play pokemon games and RTS games you should choose the steam deck. But SD is a 4 core cpu...in 2 years it will be meant for ps2 emulation only. The Ally is similar to an i9 11gen in terms of cpu performance. Why pay the same to get less?
@@MicaelAzevedo I think for me the biggest reason is Steam os. I like windows but I also know how finicky it can be. On the deck it's just boot it up and play. Granted that's only the games that are supported on steam os but that list keeps on growing. Another big reason is the community, I really like how the community keeps developing mods and such to make the deck that much better and customizable. I'm quite surprised to hear that you experienced the battery to be about the same for the deck and the ally. Do you perhaps have the LCD version of the deck? I believe the oled deck got a greatly improved battery which is another pro. And you said many of your fav games can't be played? Is that because of the power or because it's not on steam? If it is because the games aren't on steam and are on another store like epic games then I think there are ways to get around that right? The ally is really tempting because of it's power and the low price but, honestly I think from what I saw of the steam deck's performance it will be enough for the type of games I like to play (tf2, csgo2, overwatch, gta5, forza, cyberpunk, indies, and emulators).
The only thing holding stopping me from being completely sure for getting the Ally is its battery tbh. Have you ever had any instance where playing AAA games (like HD:FW, RE4 Remake, Elden ring) could last nearing the 1:45 hour mark without sacrificing too much fidelity, more specifically on Bazzite? With that, I guess I'd be satified getting the Ally + a powerbank, but so far havent really had any helpful insight. Because of the battery Steamdeck is really tempting + the better controls. OS doesn't concern me as I've mentioned that I'll be running bazzite on the Ally. Im really not sure which I prefer to sacrifice, the SD's amazing battery and controls or the Ally's superb performance. Could you tell me more about the battery experience of the Ally, and if even at 18w does it suck for portability? I'll be bringing a powerbank along most of the time I go out, but I'm not sure if I'd like to be tethered to it every hour or so. IF the Ally on AAA games 18w can last around 1:45 - 2:00 hours then I'd be more comfortable getting it.
The only reason why I went with the Deck OLED first was because of the battery life improvements and the OLED screen. Other than that, I would have chosen the Ally for it's smaller build, quieter fans, and windows operating system. Windows is just less of a pain, especially since I do not just play games from Steam. Too many people overexaggerate the issues windows has on handhelds and understate some issues SteamOS has
low battery life = not a handheld. I can find a lot better gaming laptops rather than ROG Ally on desktop. But I can't find anything can beat Steam Deck as a handheld.
If you want to play old school first person shooters avoid this the Rog Ally heck even avoid it if you wanted to play Counter-Strike modern there's a bug with it you can't map AWSD keys and use the left and right click button from a mouse at the same time with the built-in controls you have to move in position and not move to fire it's retarded and I wish Asus could fix but as it stands for my experience steam deck is Superior in the old games
@@Theman-b8nsteam deck oled is the best gaming handheld you get for price and performance its got optimization and the best battery in the game, on the go gaming relies on battery the most
If u want valorant ,blizzard ,epic games means go for ROG Ally 😇.. Or u play old games & steam games means go for steam deck but u will not get 50fps in steam deck bcoz its 15w and old apu … rog ally is 30w when u plug to power
I had the LCD and sold it for the ally and never looked back. I also bought the Legion Go, screen was nice, but it was too heavy and not ergonomic for me. As well as the OLED which im returning, because although battery is awesome and the OLED screen is nice. Performance is sub par on some games i play as well as after easily being able to install and play games from other launchers so easily, id forgotten all the acrobatics required to make a non-steam launcher working. The ally sucks at battery (literally) but its a beast and can comfortably run anything I tried on it.
Just got this thing yesterday and all I'm getting is trouble rog ally gamepad won't work in steam games can't get Xbox games to open keep crashing when I launch the game I'm going return this thing soon this is so frustrating
I have and love both! The deck oled is my new daily driver though. I get around game incompatibility with moonlight. Highly recommended. 9 hours on a OLED PC handheld is just *chefs kiss*
dislikes are battery life (better now that cpu boost toggle is there) , lack of trackpads, and the smaller display overall. I play mmos and its hard to see the text on the ally but on the deck OLED it feels spacious
Right off the bat, the first reason to get an Ally is that it's a PC? That you can hook it up to a monitor and use it as a PC. Why would you word it this way? Are you being intentionally misleading? The Steam Deck has a full Linux based desktop mode and can also hook up to a monitor and accessories. If you meant it's a full "WINDOWS" PC then say that. Otherwise you're just lying to people that are trying to make informed decisions.
Hey, this is more consumer friendly content. I do get people can (and do) use Linux as their primary OS. But for the vast majority of people, this isn't something they'd enjoy. The CPU performance alone on the SD would make it less than ideal as a PC replacement.
I don’t see how misleading people is “consumer friendly”. All you had to do was mention Windows and Linux. Instead you painted it as if the Deck simply lacked this ability at all.
@@Space_Monkey_Nation The purpose of referring to it as a full-blown PC is for individuals seeking a portable device they can use on the go and as their primary PC at home. It's also an option for those without a PC, especially those with budget constraints looking to invest in a single system. For most people the Steam Deck is not be the best choice for a main PC. While some may appreciate Linux, the majority of people wouldn't prefer using linux over windows. Mentioning that you can use the SD as a main PC would be very misleading to most people IMO and I'd feel terrible if someone bought it thinking that's all they needed. And by 'consumer,' I mean what 95% of people walking into an electronics store and stating, 'I need a new PC,' are looking for. With just a hub, the Ally becomes a desktop replacement. The 7840U pulls the same CPU score in Time Spy as my $1,700 G15 5980HX laptop.
@@filt3rless The Steam Deck is really underpowered when I hook up my 15 inch 144hz 1080p portable monitor. No way am I gonna play games in 720p on a 15 inch screen anyway. Valve never really sold it as a hybrid machine did they so you are correct not to state that it's good as a linux desktop gaming PC? Linux is not a great experience for me and it takes some getting used to. In the 15 months that I have owned my Steam Deck I just never really use desktop linux as I didn't like the experience at all. The ROG Ally is a different story as I can up the wattage and have a pretty good lower spec gaming laptop with that 15 inch 144hz monitor and my wireless Razer Blackwidow V3 Mini and Deathadder wireless. I use this combo when working away. Just wish that portable monitor was VRR because wow the ROG Ally is so much smoother in framerates. In the 3 month that I have had my Ally, I use it as a laptop as much as a handheld, it is a superb hybrid windows device.
@@paulsegrue5133 Hey, great write up and I agree with your thoughts on it. The experience between the two is night and day. I recently just picked up an XG Mobile that has a single connection and turns the Ally into a beast of computer. The steam deck wasn't built or meant for it like you said. Glad you've been enjoying the Ally :)
My question with the Ally, what’s the longitivtiy on it. Knowing it’s a windows pc with updates and will eventually start slowing the console down . I’m worried about that
It's fairly new, but man I've had a windows laptop (razer blade 2017) that just died this year. After 7 years! and still played games like a beast. Got an Asus g15 2 years ago, still runs like hell. I would say the ally we last a lot giving you don't need a lot of power to run it. but my first handheld I bought was the steamdeck back in 2023. it is still holding up, so... I cannot give you a yes or no answer on handhelds. My bet, it will last.
You cant go wrong with any of the three devices (ally, lego, sdoled), the only matters to me is how cheap you can get and how easy to claim the warranty is, buy any of them and they will be enough for a couple or more years untill the next gen handheld arrive. For me personally i pick the asus because not only the cheapest among the 3 , i can claim the warranty super easily with asus. Happy gaming everyone!
@@c-tothefourth4879 it is for me, asus took 10 days to change my ally motherboard, do you know how long valve would took that ? Now Can you imagine doing rma from east borneo indonesia, to valve hq in america?
Yeah just get what it suits you. I'm finding the ally to be almost perfect. OLED would be nice but that vrr no hassle just play smoothly all the time trumps it. So sticking to ally for the foreseeable future.
If I could only choose one device it'd definitely be the Ally. Just because it'll play everything and do it well. I still love the battery on Steam OS though and the quick resume. If only we could get all of the best features combined (Battery, Display, Sound, Etc) 🤣
I'm still gonna get a steam deck, I was gonna get an ally instead but it can potentially brick SD cards so the Ally is a hard pass I'm sure it's a good handheld I just wouldn't put an SD card in it
Steam deck all the way for a console like experience. I tried the ally, performance is amazing. Windows on a tiny screen not so much. Not to mention battery life at 25w is real bad. Steam deck isn’t as fast but it runs silent, battery life is fantastic, and steam OS is better on handheld.
Buy in what system you prefer. Since I only have an old potato laptop for almost a decade, I bought the ROG Ally as my second PC in addition to play games in handheld.
I got the Steam Deck OLED since my main gaming device currently is my desktop PC, so I went for the better optimized SteamOS rather than Windows for my handheld. When I’m gaming on the go I’m not expecting to play the latest and most demanding AAA games anyway since as of today no handheld can truly run those games smoothly, I play those games on my full sized PC. On the go, I want long battery life, little to no fan noise, a device that keeps as cool as possible and an easy to use interface, so I guess the Deck is right for me.
I’m going to be honest if I played like you I’d never touch my ally I use mine as a couch play situation so I can still be in the family mix and not secluded on my desk lol so battery life isn’t important and honestly you could just get a external battery pack you should get one anyway your SD will last 15 hrs then maybe more lol
@@wtfman1217 I mean…not really. I get that you’re team Ally, but like I said, I play graphically intense games on the PC anyways, so I don’t need the most power when I‘m playing on an airplane for example since I prefer having good battery life when I’m out and about. The deck is great for those indie titles like Hades for example where the OLED screen really makes the colours pop and in a pinch, I still could play games that demand performance, but again, I most likely play those games on my PC which is _truly_ capable of handling the graphics, unlike basically _all_ the handhelds that are on the market right now. True intense handheld gaming still needs a few more years and until then, the Deck will do fine for most games I’m interested in playing in handheld mode. If you disagree and prefer the Ally, that’s fine with me.
Honestly if only the steamdeck came baked in with its own versions of other game launchers, id get that over the ally. I already have a mini itx machine with my own portable monitor …its hard to justify using the ally as desktop computer UNLESS you get the asus egpus.
I have a good desktop pc, and I’ve been using moonlight to stream to my Steam Deck Oled (25 mbps, 90fps, 720p). Its awesome. Very low latency, feels like I’m playing it natively on the Deck.
I am doing that, too. It’s amazing, even high demanding games that would usually bring my GPU to its limits at 1440p run perfectly when reduced to 720p and look absolutely amazing on the Deck
I was amazed by how good it works as well. I used to use Steam Link but it was terrible (maybe it's improved now). But moonlight is where I wouldn't even know it's not native like you said 👍
@@randerins the design itself is refined, but I mean windows 11 and the asus software is still nowhere near as handheld friendly as steamOS. It feels like a gaming PC crammed into a handheld rather than a handheld that can play PC games.
In the end it all depends on what games you play. If it's heavy AAA games and you can't tolerate 20-30 fps then go with ally. Otherwise Deck OLED is fine. However, another good point is wether or not you have a gaming PC. If you have it already then Deck OLED looks preferable. Better battery, control scheme, OLED and HDR will work well with streaming heavy games and normal play for anything else. As for Windows vs SteamOS its not an issue imo. You can install Win on Deck if you need it. Yes, you would need to spend some time configuring it, but there's enough comprehensive guides on the internet already, it's not a big deal.
I don't think people should buy a deck just to install windows if there is already Ally that is windows out in the box at the same time more powerful. OLED is not even a big deal if it only has 800p or rather 720p you can easily tell that 1080p is sharper than 720p OLED doesn't make a difference rather than more saturated colors.
My first choice was gonna be a steam deck and I wanted to get it for Christmas , but as soon as I saw sales going on for the ally I’m definitely getting it. 399.99 is a good price I can’t wait to get my hands on it too.
@@mannydiaz215 my recommendation depends on how you're using it. If you're looking to actually use it like a handheld and leave the house with it, I recommend the 512gig steam deck OLED for $549 since it has a much much better battery life than the ally. If you're looking for an at home PC replacement and plan on going docked or plugged in most the time, you could get the ally z1e, but at that point I'd say just get a laptop. But yeah from what I'm hearing, the non extreme z1 version isn't much use
i own the ally and i love it. i didn't face any problems yet, my only complain was the internal storage and i upgraded to 2tb. the performance is very good and i can play even starfield easily + the emulation experience is great. overall the device is just what i needed as i wanted a portable PC and gaming device while living in japan :)
Bruh help I just got my Rog Ally yesterday and all I'm getting is trouble can't play any games when I try to play Xbox games it won't work when I launch it it just keeps crashing and then I can't get the controller to work in steam games I tried so many games this pissing me off
@@Mohamed-yv5wsNaw I had it set up and updated everything and wasn't working but I figured it out and got a help from this one TH-camr and I'm loving my Rog Ally now I'm new to PC I'm coming from Xbox
Can you please make a video or give me an honest opinion. Thanks. If you have the game owned in Epic/Gog and it is also available on Steam, Do you have a performance difference between the two? I heard there's a big performance difference and stutters as steam provides shaders on steam owned games...
I’m not sure, I haven’t seen them anywhere else. I’d imagine it’s more of a design thing as there just isn’t space on a lot of devices. The Deck’s unique layout allows for them. Would be nice to see them in other handhelds at some point. The Legion Go has a small trackpad but it doesn’t feel anything like the ones on the Deck.
I'm at a loss. Price is irrelevant. I like the OLED and better battery of the steam deck. I like the better performance, button/stick placement, and easy access to Gamepass on the Ally. Hard to choose! Feel like it might just be best to wait for an Ally update where it gets an oled and better battery.
It’s a really tough choice. I’ve mostly been playing the Steam Deck as I like Steam OS a lot and the battery life is amazing. I also really like 4 back buttons as I always remap x, b, y, a to them (or other shortcuts sometimes). Quick resume is also an epic feature and when paired with great battery life, it’s even better. I do like the Ally’s extra performance, but when pushing 25+ watts it’s around 1 hour of battery. So I’ve come to enjoy the slightly lower performance, but much improved battery life of the Steam Deck. I have another video I just uploaded recently that compares the OLED and Ally at 12W and 15W.
@filt3rless thanks! I'll check it out. 1 hour? Ouch! Think it would be an easy choice for me if steamdeck had asymmetrical sticks and ditched the track pads I'd assume most people by far don't use. I'll need to watch videos to see how viable gamepass is on steamdeck; that might help me decide, too. Thank you.
I decided on the ROG Ally Z1 Extreme, I need the raw power more. For the battery I can just upgrade them myself (there's a guide out there using a custom 3d printed case for the battery)
I have a 3090 desktop (use mainly for work) and 2070 Max P laptop (not using currently but it is the best 2070 laptop you can get, punches above its weight) too.
Hey, I'd recommend an actual computer at that price. If you're planning on sticking with Asus products then it could be worth the investment. But you can get a laptop that'd perform similar (or a desktop) for around the same price.
I think I’m just gonna go with the OLED steam deck because I have a PC if I do want to play hide and demanding games I just wanna play something other than what’s on the Steam library I just want the steam deck, so I can like chill in the living room or play stuff on the go casually
I think you'll like the OLED for that use case :). I've been surprised at how well some games run. I was just playing Insurgency Sandstorm at 800p, 45FPS cap and medium settings, and the experience was great. I was getting slightly over 4 hours of battery estimated remaining (which is unreal).
if you pause at 0:21 you can see the TH-cam shorts it's going crazy hahahahaha anyway jokes aside, The Rog Ally it's my pick. I respect the steamdeck a lot, and if you want to just game, by all means the steamdeck it's a great handheld experience!. For me tho... a portable windows handheld is what I need, that also can game.
I just bought a SD Oled, so there's your answer. 😂 Valve said an SD2 was a few years off when OLED launched, speculation says probably 2026 though there might be a refresh on the screen or battery before then.
@@mrl1004I'm still thinking if I should've picked up an Ally instead though, since I wouldn't use it far from an outlet, so battery isn't much of an issue 🤔.
You can't go wrong with the SD OLED. It's one of my favorite handheld devices. The Ally is more of a laptop with controls built in. The SD OLED feels like a proper handheld and is the one I'd take with me for traveling/flights/etc.
SD OLED is awesome, hope you're enjoying it! I have a 45FPS cap set on mine for almost all games so they're smooth, and the display still runs at 90Hz so there is no black flashing when switching games. Also the SD is really good with automatically lowering TDP based on an FPS cap, so I personally use and recommend an FPS cap over a TDP cap.
I have both to test and for me it comes down to battery and display. Colors and blacks are better on deck. Size of display and shine is amazing. But in some games aliasing is noticable, like Dragon Dogma, dark souls. In some oled looks better. Switch emulated games and colorful indies will look better on deck regardlerless of lower resolution on ally. I still cant decide. But all the talk about performance of ally, if you play native res on both machines you get the same fps. Slightly higher on deck
when comparising power, use same criterias for both machines, SD got only 15w, but you show Doom on ally with 25w, so its 2h gameplay maybe more on SD and one hour on ally....on 15w there is not difference, maybe little...
Hey, this is true for an even comparison. But they're not even devices. The Ally has much better performance which is exactly why someone would want the Ally over the Steam Deck.
as a FPS gamer i totally regret getting the Steamdeck OLED, not able to play CS, COD, BF, Valorant, I should have research before buying it. I know theres alot of workaround, from what I see its a hit or miss and with a really low fps, I've heard some are getting banned because the anti-cheats detect steamdeck with some injector or modified files or something. the good side the battery, and lots of optimize games on steamOS but I should've have bought the ROG ally thou. my mistake.🙃
I think these handhelds are trying to be too much. Yeah, you get more power on the ally and can play games like call of duty(with lower settings) but you can only do that for 45 minutes before having to plug it into a wall. Why not just play call of duty on an Xbox, ps5, or pc? It would be basically the same thing since they’re both tethered to a wall. You’d get better performance out of a console or computer too. These handhelds should be focused on playing more games that are suitable for heldhelds and the hardware should reflect that. Then they should be optimized for streaming so you can play those aaa games on the handheld without relying on the hardware. That’s why I think the steam deck oled is way closer to what a handheld should be over the ally and the legion go. It comes down to battery life and actually using it as a handheld. If you don’t want a handheld, then just buy a gaming laptop with a 13 or 14 inch screen. It would be easy to upgrade it later on, it’ll have way better battery life, and will run aaa games better than all the handhelds.
I definitely think the OLED checks the handheld box really well. It's like a nintendo switch on steroids and let's you play most of your steam library. And being okay with 40-45FPS makes it so there is very little tweaking needed on the deck. Much more console like, like you said. I found setting a 45FPS cap and then "just playing" games has worked well. I find myself spending so much time tweaking settings on any windows device haha.
Love your vids man. ❤ I’m having a hard time choosing, I got the ally but I’ve been thinking to return it and get the SD OLED instead. I had the OG LCD before but sold it coz of the huge and chunky feel of it, I have pretty small hands. I love the ally’s weight much much better. But now that everyone’s saying the OLED got a bit lighter than the LCD, plus the longer battery, I kinda want to go back to Steam Deck again. I love the Rog Ally but the battery life is really a turn off(for me, I mostly have to play plugged in. I’m really tempted with that OLED screen 😍. Idk I’m torn. Is there anyone here who did the same? Sold/returned the ally and got the SD OLED? I wonder what is your experience with it guys. Thanks. ❤
Having weaker battery life has a solution which is powerbank but having a weaker processor is already fixed. Also Steam Deck is limited even in their steam store while Ally can play all steam games and outside steam so your just gonna downgrade instead of upgrading your device.
Why pay the same to get less performa ce and play fewer games? I can not eve emulate ps3 games decently in a SD.
I'd Get a Steam now and enjoy that whilst waiting for the inevitable 2024 update of the ROG Ally, with similar improvements Valve have just made to the Deck.
I'm at a dilemma rn. I have the Ally and Go. I'm not sure if I need another device but the SD OLED is very intriguing to me due to the console like experience. I think the main deciding factor that you need to ask yourself is if you're OK with buying your games mainly on Steam. If you already have a large library then it's easy to pick up the SD and just go. If you don't have a large library and play your games elsewhere or just new to PC gaming then the SD might be a hard sell. Another question is if you're a gamer that demand high specs or no. If you're ok with playing games at 30-60fps then the SD will work for you. If you only want to game in 120fps then the Ally or Go will be perfect. At this point I'm not sure if buying a device with a 2 year old processor in late 2023 is a great idea, OLED or not. I understand the SD is a great device but it's not meant for everyone as it's more restrictive overall. I don't have a problem paying $550 for the SD OLED model but is it worth it when the Ally is already awesome and the Go is great as well for what it does. I need to ask myself would I return my Go for a SD OLED kinda like what Filterless did. I'm not as sure if I would and I believe with him having the prior SD it was a no brainer to just up the SD OLED instead. I skipped out on the original SD on purpose cause I felt like for the money it wasn't powerful enough for me. I still believe he would've returned the Go no matter what tho. It's just not a finished product and I understand that but with something like this it takes time for it to be the best it could be. I might end up returning my Go as well and just wait for the next Ally which I wouldn't mind. The Go does bring something new to the table though but is it the right new things that matters over the Ally. Would I get rid of my Ally right now? No I wouldn't as I feel like it's the perfect portable machine for what it does. It's future proof as well with its XGM which I do have one. To me everyone says it's the SD that needs to be beat but I feel like the SD is in a different category vs the Ally. One is a PC that wants to be a console and the other is a full on PC. I understand the reason to have both and I wouldn't blame you if you did. To me it just comes down to those two questions I mentioned earlier. If I don't pick up the SD OLED within the next few months then I won't at all and will just wait for the next SD2 instead. I waited this long and so what's another 2 years. 😊 #GTA6
Great write up man. That's a pretty tough decision. I think it could be worth ordering the 512GB OLED to see what you think since it's easy to return to Valve. But it really depends on the use case. I definitely was returning the Go no matter what. I think I returned it before the OLED was announced. The Go had some things I did like, but the Joysticks, Sound and USB-C ports were too much as I love good sound and proper feeling controls. I know they'll update joysticks (they may have already), but I think the USB-C port issue a hardware issue as I found posts where the issue was present in some Lenovo laptops as well. The main draw for the OLED I'd say is the battery life. While it's not the best performance, it's still amazing when I load up something like Insurgency Sandstorm with a 45FPS cap and see 3-4 hours of battery left. Then jump on Skyrim and see over 5 hours, it's like "how?" 😊 If I could only choose one though, I'd stick with the Ally personally. Black Ops 3 not loading, weird TDP issues with Steam OS 3.5 and games not loading because of Steam OS limitations are the main reasons.
@@filt3rless thanks. That's the thing tho. Once you experience high refresh rate gaming is hard to go back. Eben at 60fps from 30fps is a big step up. Don't get me wrong I'm a older gamer I've lived with 30fps when growing up playing my NES. I'm just wondering why would I choose to play in 30fps when I don't have to. 😉 I'm sure 45fps is a lot better but 60fps is the real base point currently imo. The savor for me when it comes to the SD OLED is it's 90Hz screen. If it wasn't for that I wouldn't even be still considering it at all. I know this choice should be simply and not as complicated as gloss vs etched for the last 2 years. 😅 I'll make up my mind soon I guess. Thanks for all of your videos tho man as you're my go to when it comes to these portable devices.
Personally if I were in your position, I would save my money and wait to see what's right around the corner. There will be more handhelds next year. And then you'll be looking at your pile and wondering the same thing. If nothing else, give yourself a period of time to think about it.
@@B_Machine yeah I have enough patience to wait. I don't mind having two devices or so cause I have someone that I could pass it on to. ☺️ The Ally will be my daughter soon and I could live with the Go and/or SD OLED. As for other devices I don't really trust the purchase experience when it comes to all those other overseas options as much as they look awesome. I'd rather just wait for the bigger companies to make something and buy it directly from them or at the store. If I do return my Go I would just use my gaming labtop if I want a bigger screen experience I could always hook up my Ally to one of my portable gaming monitors as well. I just wish I knew either now that ASUS was going to make a bigger Ally next year cause I would instantly return my Go 😄 I could always sell my old devices as well if I don't have a need for it.
Upgrade your Ally add some ssd and chill the SD isn’t worth it if you already have two if anything I’d trade the Go and then get a used SD with the money if you really just don’t want to miss out bug the Ally is really the best and because of the hardware it should last at least 10 years
Hot take If you have "that" steaming gamer desktop, get the Asus Ally. If you're like me and just have a gaming laptop, get a Steamdeck. I say this because a laptop already has the gaming portability that Ally provides. It even took me a minute for me to buy into the Steamdeck hype until I had take a trip to Hawaii, then I bit the bullet. The battery lasted like 90% of the 6+hr flight (OG w/extermal battery). I only say this because the transition from a gaming desktop to a portable powerhouse would be less jarring with an Ally, than a SteamDeck, with the processing/resolution advantage. It's like having an Xbox and a PC, there's a lot of overlap in the "entertainment" Venn diagram when you can get a PS and XB or PC and get the best of both worlds. Ofc everyone has a different situational circumstance or priority. I'm not telling anyone how to spend their money, just my opinion. You can buy whatever you want. Or buy everything like that one filipino gamer dude lmao.
Really do love my Ally ngl really wanted to get a steam deck months ago but after so many reviews and using the Ally when it first came out only to return it on the last day for the return policy I missed it lol plus I ended up selling my Ps5 and wanted something that I can play AAA games such as BO3 Zombies so yeah Ally was the one for me ….co worker has the steam deck and she loves it for her Indy titles already said she wasn’t going to upgrade to Oled …yet
Exactly and everybody that bought it are new to the asus brand. They flexing the power but not realizing asus products are known for breaking and asus dont help them with it. I broke my steam deck modifying it and valve sent me a new one. That alone goes to show who i need to side with. And they sent me a new steam deck so fast it was insane
Yes, but it is the original dead space game from 2008. It's not the new one that just came out (the new one would eat more battery). Still it's super impressive in a lot of older titles.
God dammit I literally watched all these videos on TH-cam but I still can't decide. I mean 1080p with the Z1 X is good but Steam integration and that OLED. Still can't decide.
I was originally going to put "Impossible Choice" in the thumbnail as it's really hard to decide between them 🤣. I just want the battery life, simplicity and OLED from the Steam Deck. Then the performance, sound, VRR and 1080p resolution from the Ally.
The 10% additional pixels makes a slight difference. But the Ally has 110% more performance. The point of the comparison is to show just how much more power the Ally has. This is important to people. Doing 1080p on the Ally and 800p on the SD to compare raw performance wouldn't make any sense as it wouldn't show anything. Just like if I decided to benchmark one at 4k and the other at 1080p. 800p vs 720p is close enough when in the context of the video. You'll run 16:9 on the Ally and 16:10 on the SD so the comparison is fair.
@@celestial_froggy Because you can't run 1280x720 on the Steam Deck in Doom without using an external monitor. Here is 30+ minutes of benchmarks with the Ally at 720p, feel free to match the settings I show at the beginning of each and test it out with the Deck at 720p as well: th-cam.com/video/K3KysGxAthA/w-d-xo.html
@@filt3rless you literally can. At the very least you can set the resolution in game properties, under General. If that's too hard, you can literally set in-game aspect ratio to 16:9 and set the resolution according to that aspect ratio.
Hey, if you're looking for a more "pick up and play" experience and have a lot of games on Steam, the Steam Deck is probably the way to go. The Ally is a lot more powerful though, and you can play anything or use it as a full blown PC. It really depends on what you're looking for.
I've been using moonlight a lot lately and it works extremely well. Even on the OLED Steam Deck I'm seeing around 9 hours of battery while playing through moonlight, which is crazy!
I got the steam deck. So far 189 games in my library for steam and they all work. Even arma 3 koth works great. If you have a steam deck and don't really need much for your daily gaming stick with it. It will say unsupported on the game but it will still play and it plays well.
1:14 People need to understand each system is optimized for different levels of power draw. At 10 watts Steamdeck is still far and away the most powerful mobile PC ever built, Valve worked a miracle with their system level power optimization, oppositely at 20 watts the Z1E/7840u chipset will spank the pants off the Steamdeck running its hardest. In the end each system will work best with very different games and very different playstyles. Steamdeck OLED tuned for minimum power draw can play 2D games for over 10 hours, more than 3X longer than the ROG Ally: th-cam.com/video/GQkpJ1qPUVA/w-d-xo.html But then if you want to play modern games at high resolution Steamdeck just won't cut it, the ROG ALLy or Legion Go will run 2x-4x more resolution than Steamdeck, but you'll probably get half the battery life.
Valve worked magic with it for sure. I have a huge benchmark I just ran with 20 games at 12w, 15w and then 30w on the Ally. The numbers the SD pulls at 12w is impressive. It’s be great to have a chip that can handle lower watts like the Steam Deck while still giving us the option to push the watts higher for more performance. I’m sure we’ll see some awesome improvements with handhelds in the future :)
@@filt3rless Looking back over the video with battery drain tests, it looks like half the magic of Steamdeck actually has nothing to do with the processor and is just the total hardware optimization. On the 2D game test setting TDP to 4 watts it runs for over 10 hours, which means the screen, memory, motherboard, fan, all run on less than 1 watt? Unless the TDP is lying but there's so little wiggle room there. Meanwhile in that same test with the Legion Go, same battery size, TDP set only 1 watt higher at 5 watts, gets nearly 1/3 the battery life. Whoever the hardware guru is over at Valve that guy is a god tier magician.
Hey, it's currently not working. From looking online it's been this way for a month or more. This is the unfortunate thing with Steam OS as right now there is no simple work around.
You can't go wrong with either device. I love them both :)
I own both.
If it runs well on the deck ill play it there.
Better controls, better screen, better battery
If it doesnt. Ill use the Ally.
I agree 100%. Both are amazing but I still prefer the deck. Loving the OLED personally.

Owning a steam deck has completely changed travelling for me. I'm weirdly excited about long plane rides because it just means I get to play video games uninterrupted for a few hours. Didn't realize how badly I wanted this.
Same, I have a 2 hour train journey into the office and I need to go in 3 days a week. OLED steam deck has made this so much better

It's a really tough choice honestly. They're both really good at certain things. If we could just combine them and get the best of everything. A 1080p OLED with VRR, great performance and good battery life would be 👌

you are soooo luck you can just go to a store and buy it... here in brazil it's online only :( at least in my city

I've got both but don't really see the need to have both as they do 90% the same as each other - debating which one to get rid of but it's really hard to choose!
Which one did u get rid of in the end? And why?
I have both and i say i pick ally more often. Display and performance is superior. Problem is battery life and gamepad sometimes not detected after power on. I pick steamdeck only if i go out.
Great video as usual. Informative and objective. I look forward to each new video on your channel.
Great video clear and concise! I have a Steam Deck and I absolutely love it!
Both are cool. I wouldn’t be able to do handheld gaming without the trackpads though, once you set them up with steam input they are incredibly useful. My friend has an ally though, they’re cool as well!
trackpads are definitely a useful feature i hope the ally 2 has them as its the #1 complaint i had with mine
@pkilljoy5797 only reason I haven't bought a ally. The trackpad works wonders for me with shooters and all
Track pads are overrated.

It’s 399.99 on Best Buy right now ! Z1 extreme is about 599.99.
@@Kue27completely agree. Windows is miles away for handheld. Sleep and wake up, nah
Too many people overexaggerate the issues windows has on handhelds and understate some issues SteamOS has
Thank you I just said this like it’s a pain in the ass to get games to work on the deck that aren’t steam games

The deck oled is my new daily driver though. I get around game incompatibility with moonlight. Highly recommended. 9 hours on a OLED PC handheld is just *chefs kiss*
What do u dislike about the Ally then? The ally has the better/sharper screen as seen here
dislikes are battery life (better now that cpu boost toggle is there) , lack of trackpads, and the smaller display overall. I play mmos and its hard to see the text on the ally but on the deck OLED it feels spacious
Wish you still had the Legion Go. Would be even more killer content
I own both so I'm completely covered, I play both of them equally.
If you could only have one for home use, as your main gaming device. Which would you choose?
I'm still gonna get a steam deck, I was gonna get an ally instead but it can potentially brick SD cards so the Ally is a hard pass I'm sure it's a good handheld I just wouldn't put an SD card in it
the latest versions of rog ally have already fixed the card problem
That’s a shame
SD cards are for cameras not PCs anyway, you should be using an SSD not an SD card :D
The Steam deck battery sucks man.. I have one def get a separate battery
Can’t I download windows on steam then run black ops?
Great video. Not long and to the point
That’s a shame
They get HDR working on moonlight for the Deck yet? I love my ally but that oled is the biggest reason to upgrade.
But moonlight is where I wouldn't even know it's not native like you said 👍
Gamepass and game compatibility pushed me towards the ally, despite being overall a significantly less refined machine.
Idk man it's pretty refined for being a windows machine. RoGs software is surprisingly intuitive
I think even its design looks very refined and futuristic
@@randerins the design itself is refined, but I mean windows 11 and the asus software is still nowhere near as handheld friendly as steamOS. It feels like a gaming PC crammed into a handheld rather than a handheld that can play PC games.
Thank you brother great video 👍🏽
My only question is… Would I be able to stream from it ?
Were you running DOOM 2016 on OpenGL or Vulkan? Vulkan will allow you lock it down at 90 fps on Ultra at 800p on the OLED
What about battery life and low wattage performance?
Which Ally is this? the Z1 or the Z1 Extreme? The Z1 non-extremem is slower than the Deck.
Hey it’s the Z1 Extreme.
I don't think it's wrong to say the Steam Deck focus on a console feeling and the other handheld feels like Windows but handheld
My first choice was gonna be a steam deck and I wanted to get it for Christmas , but as soon as I saw sales going on for the ally I’m definitely getting it. 399.99 is a good price I can’t wait to get my hands on it too.
399? If that's for the Z1 ally (not z1 extreme) don't do it. It's actually not even more powerful than the steam deck
@@derekfurst6233 thanks for the heads up bro ! I’ll do the 599.99 then for the z1 extreme
Great review. I’ll stick to my OLED. Great points made.
Can you please make a video or give me an honest opinion. Thanks. If you have the game owned in Epic/Gog and it is also available on Steam, Do you have a performance difference between the two? I heard there's a big performance difference and stutters as steam provides shaders on steam owned games...
It's the part where you meet Minsc and Boo!
i think bothg are amazing in their own unique way.
ty for your honesty
I love those haptic trackpads on the deck, are they patented? No other device has them
I’m not sure, I haven’t seen them anywhere else.
Do you recommend XG Mobile 4090 if I’m getting for $3050 AUD if I own the Ally? (Retail price is $4010)
I have a 3090 desktop (use mainly for work) and 2070 Max P laptop (not using currently but it is the best 2070 laptop you can get, punches above its weight) too.
I mostly play games at 30w plugged in while laying in bed either before going to sleep or if I wake up too early.
Laptop based GPU...powerful yes but you are paying more than a desktop for less performance
Hey, I'd recommend an actual computer at that price. If you're planning on sticking with Asus products then it could be worth the investment. But you can get a laptop that'd perform similar (or a desktop) for around the same price.
Get them both!
Hi guys im thinking of getting a steam deck oled - is it worth getting it now or waiting for sd2? xD
I just bought a SD Oled, so there's your answer. 😂 Valve said an SD2 was a few years off when OLED launched, speculation says probably 2026 though there might be a refresh on the screen or battery before then.
@@Mister_Kevin placed an order a few days ago, should be coming tomorrow! Excited is an understatement 😂
Wouldn't low fps be worse on oled vs lcd due to more stutter due to fast pixel response?
Lol wtf no
ally z1 extrem right?
Yes 👍
Great video!
I dont know why but I went to check the Ally and to me it looked ugly and the Lcd screen took me out of buying it.
Once again another great video! Thanks Filterless!
Still can't choose, i play mostly online games, so i don't know which one to choose.
For mostly multiplayer I’d say the Ally because you know the game will work. The Steam deck with Anti-Cheat issues can be a real pain.
@@filt3rless Oohh thanks, I didn't know that so the ally it is.
when comparising power, use same criterias for both machines, SD got only 15w, but you show Doom on ally with 25w, so its 2h gameplay maybe more on SD and one hour on ally....on 15w there is not difference, maybe little...
I know theres alot of workaround, from what I see its a hit or miss and with a really low fps, I've heard some are getting banned because the anti-cheats detect steamdeck with some injector or modified files or something. the good side the battery, and lots of optimize games on steamOS
but I should've have bought the ROG ally thou. my mistake.🙃
What kind of pc you got?
Also Steam Deck is limited even in their steam store while Ally can play all steam games and outside steam so your just gonna downgrade instead of upgrading your device.
i owned a switch oled with diablo 2-3, best buy ever, big batterie, looks super , and sice is best
is depend you most playing for, if you play like fifa or fc24, xbox game, you must pick ally instead of sd. not recomended installing windows in sd
Why pay the same to get less performa ce and play fewer games? I can not eve emulate ps3 games decently in a SD.
Rog ally is a way better system. The battery life is what really hurts it, though. Add insult to Injury the sd card slot can get burned out
I'd Get a Steam now and enjoy that whilst waiting for the inevitable 2024 update of the ROG Ally, with similar improvements Valve have just made to the Deck.
If Asus gives us a slightly bigger screen that's OLED and has VRR. And has better battery life/performance, it's going to be 👌
@@filt3rlessand a repositioned SD card slot, if for no other reason than putting that potential issue to bed once and for all.
Then jump on Skyrim and see over 5 hours, it's like "how?" 😊
If I could only choose one though, I'd stick with the Ally personally.
Upgrade your Ally add some ssd and chill the SD isn’t worth it if you already have two if anything I’d trade the Go and then get a used SD with the money if you really just don’t want to miss out bug the Ally is really the best and because of the hardware it should last at least 10 years
Whats that laptop it looks like my g15 advantage
Hey, that's exactly what it is 👍. I love it, the 6800M is pretty beefy still :)
Hot take
If you have "that" steaming gamer desktop, get the Asus Ally.
I bought two steam decks from Valve.

2:34 6 hours in dead space? that’s crazy 😳
Idk how anyone could go for the deck when much more powerful options are available
Because the choice goes beyond power...
idk why anyone could go for the ally when much powerful gaming laptops are available hek
1:13 800p is about 10% more pixel count than 720p and Ally's display resolution is actually 1080p. What even is this comparison?
The 10% additional pixels makes a slight difference. But the Ally has 110% more performance. The point of the comparison is to show just how much more power the Ally has. This is important to people. Doing 1080p on the Ally and 800p on the SD to compare raw performance wouldn't make any sense as it wouldn't show anything. Just like if I decided to benchmark one at 4k and the other at 1080p. 800p vs 720p is close enough when in the context of the video. You'll run 16:9 on the Ally and 16:10 on the SD so the comparison is fair.
@@filt3rless I'm not convinced. 10% is a big enough difference to render this comparison irrelevant. Why not test Deck at 720p as well then?
@@celestial_froggy Because you can't run 1280x720 on the Steam Deck in Doom without using an external monitor. @@filt3rless you literally can. At the very least you can set the resolution in game properties, under General. If that's too hard, you can literally set in-game aspect ratio to 16:9 and set the resolution according to that aspect ratio.
@@celestial_froggyI stand corrected. In the same spot it goes from 64-65FPS at 800p to 69-70FPS at 720p. So a decent increase.
So in other words... Keep it safe and buy the Steam Deck OLED?
Hey, if you're looking for a more "pick up and play" experience and have a lot of games on Steam, the Steam Deck is probably the way to go. The Ally is a lot more powerful though, and you can play anything or use it as a full blown PC. It really depends on what you're looking for.
Moonlight now allows 120 fps which if you have a good pc you can play cyberpunk like a king with the rog ally XD just saying
I've been using moonlight a lot lately and it works extremely well. Even on the OLED Steam Deck I'm seeing around 9 hours of battery while playing through moonlight, which is crazy!
I have a legion go and it’s basically the shits. Ended up just getting the oled deck.
Steamdeck OLED tuned for minimum power draw can play 2D games for over 10 hours, more than 3X longer than the ROG Ally: th-cam.com/video/GQkpJ1qPUVA/w-d-xo.html
But then if you want to play modern games at high resolution Steamdeck just won't cut it, the ROG ALLy or Legion Go will run 2x-4x more resolution than Steamdeck, but you'll probably get half the battery life.
BO3 DOESNT WORK on steam deck ??
Hey, it's currently not working. From looking online it's been this way for a month or more. This is the unfortunate thing with Steam OS as right now there is no simple work around.
get the ally If you have gamepass, as simple as that
