Hyundai Ioniq 5 P45. UK Review. Part 4. Gravity Gold Matte Paint. Protection Required!

  • The matte finish of the Gravity Gold paintwork on my P45 requires a lot more TLC than “normal” paint. I was unaware of this. There were not many paint colour options to choose from during the pre-ordering process in any case. Was not even sure what it would actually look like in real life, but the pictures made it look more like a silvery gold colour.
    So now I was going to have this matte paint protected. Which meant having the car “Detailed”. Never had a car detailed or had paint protection before. All new to me.
    Which may mean that I am now almost a full-on “TH-camr!”😂😂
    Was highly recommended a local detailer Richard. Based in Cardiff, South Wales.He very kindly agreed to allow me to film the whole paint protection process. Please check out his website,twitter & Facebook pages..

    The word “Meticulous” does not fully cover what he does..
    Over 6 and a half hours of work edited down to around 20 minutes!

    • @markymarkreviews
      @markymarkreviews  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes. It is a silvery gold but depends on the light. The colour was exactly what I was hoping it would be. Not too gold or silver. But something in between ! A ceramic coating was put on. Think of it like nail varnish. A hard protective layer. The car needs to be meticulously cleaned before it is applied otherwise any dirt or grit would get sealed in after the ceramic application. It does not stop the car getting dirty. But protects the Matt finish paint. But makes cleaning really easy as surface water and dirt does not cling as easily to the bodywork. MM

    The two bucket method, at least as I understand and do, is a bucket of shampoo with grit guard, and a second bucket of clean water. The idea you wash your 'lambs wool' wash mit in the clean water and then wipe it over the grit guard in the shampoo bucket, thus preventing any grit from the car being wiped from one panel over another to eliminate scratches.
    Never seen what your guy has done before or nor can I see the point of what he's doing as he's just wiping the wash mit from one panel to the next without cleaning it first. Additionally and whilst I may be wrong with a matte finish, but he has made no attempt at all to correct the paintwork of any existing swirls or surface scratches or prep the paint for best adhesion of the sealant.
    I'm sorry but from my experience of Detailers it should be a far more extensive job as otherwise you are just sealing in any paint imperfections. The normal price for this level of work should start at least at £500, I hope your guy didn't charge you anywhere near that.
    Finally, whilst just my opinion, the claims of these paint sealant products is vastly over estimated at years, and bird droppings need to be removed ASAP to avoid etching the lacquer regardless of a sealant. I use a Cannuba based wax 'Swissvax Best of Show' which may only last a few months, but then can be reapplied by me rather than having to pay for another sealant application.
    Sorry to be so critical, and of course it's your car and money and if you're happy then that is all that really matters!

      I feel I have to reply to this. This video was about the matte paint finish on my car. Matte paint detailing is very different from conventional metallic or pearlescent finishes. You even say in your response that you “may be wrong” concerning MATTE finishes! You are! You cannot machine buff a Matte finish. It damages it. No clay bars either. It is an abrasive and would permanently scratch and damage it. And WAX would give the matte finish a shiny look. And ruin it! I don’t mind you criticising me as I am new to this TH-cam process, and with constructive criticism I can hopefully improve and get better at it. I cannot accept your criticism of, or your view that the detailer did not seem to do a good job! He has probably forgotten more about detailing over the last, almost, 20 years than you probably already know! Remember, people give him boats and yachts to paint correct and detail (Hint: boats and yachts can be much more expensive than a typical car), let alone the usual Ferraris etc and vintage Jags. But then you compound your statement by saying that you hope I did not pay him that much for his work. I did not mention pricing in the video as this will vary across the country and in other countries abroad. But the price was incredibly reasonable. Matte cars are best detailed straight away before they get damaged during normal use. And I also mentioned in the description and narration that the video was heavily edited so you may not see all parts of the process and what he did. Although I am sure there would have people quite happy to sit through six and a half hours of video! Saying all of that I think we (you and me!) would both probably agree that we have no idea why matte finishes are offered on cars at all. They are too much of a hassle to keep looking good. Hence the reason for this video. And this paint protection process. PPF would have been even better but cost a few thousand pounds….No way! Not for me. This GTechnique C1 ceramic protection (recommended for matte paint finishes! ) comes with a 5 year guarantee and free annual inspections. Hope that helps!MM

      @@markymarkreviews in view of your response, I feel it would be worthwhile leaving some comments.
      1. You speak about what your friend the Detailer has forgotten in twenty years. If you Google ‘two bucket wash method’ you will see as I described, the purpose is to clean the ‘Mit’ between applications to the vehicle in order to prevent grit etc from one cleaned panel being wipe over the next, thereby preventing scratches etc to the surface. Maybe pass that information on to your guy in case he’s ‘FORGOTTEN’. It really doesn’t matter whether he details yachts boats cars or even Jumbo jets the facts remain!
      2. You presume to make assumptions as to my knowledge base without knowing anything about my not twenty years experience, but some THIRTY years! Whilst I accept it’s not relevant, I can send you via an appropriate medium photos of my own car- a Maserati, in order for you to examine my level of ‘work’ in terms of car maintenance.
      3. You explain you are new to running a TH-cam channel, again only my opinion, but being hostile to those that watch your channel, and I have watched your other videos on your new Hyundai which I found pretty informative, is not going to endear you to your audience.
      4. Finally, I wouldn’t rely on the assurances of a ceramic coating provider, if you find bird droppings, and don’t clean them off, I think you will be disappointed if you think they will rectify the resulting damage to the paintwork.

      @@neilm84b97 Hyundai have not specified anything special, but like normal solar panels they are designed to be pretty weather proof and to be brush cleaned etc. But with this car I think I would only use soft cloths etc to rub bird mess off etc. and normal shampoos etc. if needed.

    For me this video is unwatchable. The contrast is very high. This is the only video I had a problem with. Maybe you can upload another version of it? Otherwise good work. I like how you present this car.

    They pigeons will eventually nest under the panels.

    • @markymarkreviews
      @markymarkreviews  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Think they have already! Just hope they don’t start picking apart the wiring! My panels have SolarEdge optimisers on them so I can keep a check on the individual panel outputs and how they are functioning via the SE app. If they do start to play up will have to put mesh around them. I find it amazing that mesh etc is not a standard fitment during solar installs, to prevent eventual nesting issues.

    Exposure on this video, way too bright for me. Could not see the words you added on the screen due to over exposure, otherwise great content

    • @markymarkreviews
      @markymarkreviews  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Rhys, The over exposure issue seems to be a TH-cam glitch affecting some users. I have not seen how it looks myself as looks normal to me, but one or two viewers have said the same but plenty more who say it looks normal! You may have to try searching for the video via the YT search bar and see if it plays normally going that route. Thanks for the feedback.MM

      If there have been any issues with watching an upload, it has always been due to the users individual software (possibly an update is due etc) or phone/tablet or PC issues, or such like. Try on another device? It has had a few thousand views so far. Hope that helps. MM

      This seems to be a YT glitch affecting some people. I guess it is massively overexposed? It filmed normally and appears normal as has been watched by many others without issue. Try entering the video title in to the YT search box and it may play normally via that route. I hope so. MM

    Wow... Sorry, but I had to turn the video off as it is SO overexposed. Couldn't see anything, however the preview thumbnail on the progress bar looked better. Very weird.

      @markymarkreviews  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That’s a bit worrying as just had somebody else comment on that as well. It has been up for 4 days now and no previous comments like that after 5000 or so views so I wonder if it’s a YT glitch as has looked perfectly normal over the previous few days. MM

      @@markymarkreviews I thought I would point it out for you. I have the Kia EV6 GT-Line S on order at the moment, and I was so tempted to go with the matte silver colour as it looks amazing, but I was worried about the upkeep and also the resellability, so ended up going with Batman Black... HA HA!!. Congrats on your awesome new car though, the I5 is absolutely amazing!

      @@NickPowellPhotography EV6 looks really nice. Hyundai/Kia really sticking it to the established players. And the EV6 has the bigger battery and slightly more realistic real world range. Another great addition to the EV market place. Matte paint seems to be more hassle than it’s worth. Don’t know how much of it is urban myth ( to keep it looking good). I am sure the EV6 looks great in any colour. 👍 MM

      @@markymarkreviews I think the main thing to do is make sure that you are using specific products for matte paintwork. Chemical Guys do a really good matte paint cleaning range, so might be worth a look. Also, keep a packet of water wipes for babies in the car, to use to spot clean any bird poo or bugs off. :)
