@Garrett Yarbrough 95 f with 37% humidity right now here outside Dayton Oregon. Going to be a warm day. Clear skies for the most part with a few thin clouds once in a while.
Super confused Scotty. You’ve railed on Hyundai AND railed on EVs in countless videos. Now this. Yhis car is both. How many times have you said “Hyundais are TOTAL CRAP.” This car barely made it to your house due to the range issues with AC on. And 53k for all that trouble? And no Scotty rampage about it? You are confusing the crap out of your viewers. Still love the channel though.
I own a Hyundai ioniq hybrid and it is a FANTASTIC car. 55-60mpg at 70mph is what I get. I look forward to getting an All electric Hyundai when they get cheaper and with better range.
A lot of the things Scotty liked in the Hyundai like a screen in front of you along with buttons and dials are most likely a huge selling point for consumers who don't want a giant screen in the center like on a Tesla.
@@codezalo5773 I like the look of the I6 and it seems like they've made some advancements over the I5. I still prefer the crossover size. Miles per kilowatt hour vary a lot based on environment. Cold weather and EVs don't mix at all, but I'm down here in Texas. It only reaches the 30s and below for a few weeks out of the year tops. If I was back up in the mid-Atlantic where I'm from, I'd have some really rough mornings. However, there are more public fast chargers there than here. I have a 150 mile roundtrip drive to my office. Right now (May), if I charge to 100%, I get back home with about 42%. In the winter, I'd come back home in the teens.
@@greatstoneplanet sheesh ya that's some good insight, appreciate you, I live in CA actually. Ioniq seems to be the play for the range regardless of the 5 or 6. Thanks !
Personally, I like the retro 80s hatch look of this vs. the Kia EV6. That said Scotty best advice here is to wait for prices to come down. The point about commuting and charging is also important because if you can charge at home range and charging time only matters on road trips. Also, a point about price, I just saw a Jeep commercial, $60k+ for a Grand Cherokee and over $80k for a Wagoneer. Prices in general are insane, but people are still buying.
I bought this car in the top trim and road tripped it from Blaine WA to Key West FL and back. It was the best road trip ever. What a great car, I'm keeping it forever.
There s no problem with ev cars.its the 20 years behind on power grid and charging stations.Policy makers want everyone on road in 10 years .cart before the horse
moved to ioniq 5 after Mercedes 2 motor 5 seconds to 100 km. comfort E class Mercedes 21 years old. insanely happy. saving on an electric car is not important .. it's just nice to drive a square weighing 2300 kg. I recommend to everyone !!! tried a lot of trains. ioniq is the best.
I have a 2022 Elantra N, and the infotainment and digital cluster screen are incredibly sleek and responsive. Hyundai should just replicate that setup in all their vehicles. That company has come so far it's astounding.
For EVs, you need to put ceramic window tinting to help cut UV and IR rays into the car - this will help the AC from having to work so hard. This is especially true when the car has to sit outside not running for a while. The tinting does not have to be a dark tint, a 5% tint works as long as it is made to reduce UV and IR.
800v platform, best you can get with an EV. Tesla sucks even tho i like their ideas but their cars damn...... awful quality but thats with all brand new car manufactorers. Lucid Air? amazing car... crap quality.
I really love your approach to electric cars. It seems like people are so divided when in reality there are perfectly valid pros and cons and you are very fair in your judgment. Great to see :)
mine (awd) works like a dream, I can drift it, make 0 to 60 in 5 seconds, go every where for a penny, sleep in on road trip, supply almost anything in electricity. is smooth is fast, is awesome
Ioniq5 AWD Limited owner here. My first EV and best car I've ever had. This vehicle is built on Hyundai's new from the ground up EGMP platform. It's an 800 volt system which is quite rare and unheard of for this price range. This means it can be charged extremely quickly. Not to mention the performance of the platform is capable of approximately 600 HP. My particular car has 320HP and 446LBs of torque which is good enough for 0-60 in less than 5 seconds. Some have hit it in as little as 4.5 seconds. Soon Hyundai will reveal the N version of this vehicle which will hit 0-60 in less than 3.5 seconds.
Spot on. SEL AWD owner here and it's a great car to drive. I was shocked at myself. 2 years ago, if you asked me if I'd pay nearly 60k for a hyundai, i would have laughed. Fastforward to 2022... it's probably the only EV worth the money at this time.
I bought one a month ago. I have have two porsches, and have owned a Mercedes’ s class, Audis, Chryslers, and everything else. But this is my favorite car ever. It handles well, is reasonably fast, super quiet, roomy and smooth riding.looks nice too. As to charging, it charges overnight at home for my relatively long drive to work. On very long drives these days, just a little planning is needed. It is a joy to pass the gas stations. FYI I paid sticker for an SE. just have to look.
I bought my 2017 Chevy Bolt 3 years ago for 22k. Best car I've ever owned. It's sitting on 60k miles with almost no battery degradation and I've NEVER had to take it in for maintenance. The only thing I've had to replace so far are the windshield wipers. Because of the regen the car has it doesn't use up the breaks like normal cars. It's also nice to charge in my apartment's garage for free and not spend a single dime to drive everyday.
Our 2021 Hyundai Kona EV Ultimate gets 300 mile range, even though it was advertised at 258. We charge it at home 99% of the time. Last year we paid $10k total for a 3year/36k mile lease, including taxes, registration etc., with no trade. If we buy it at lease end, it's $23k more. Ours has a rear wiper. They also provide 1k miles of free charging at Electrify America charging stations and a 10 year/100k mile warranty on the battery and motor. It's very quick.
I'm so happy that he made a review of the Ioniq 5 since i ordered one myself (and have yet to receive it). Plus, i like hearing Scotty's reviews/critics. So thank you very much for this video man.
@@HazardSports thanks, i'm a little worried since i just got the news my 2022 Ioniq 5 got changed for the 2023. There's a few changes like the increase in the battery perfomance. The rear Camera. But the side sensors were decreased from 2.0 to 1.5 due to pandemic issues and the changes are a little bothersome.
@@oreally8605 Why? I bought a Hyundai Elantra in 2009 and it surprised me how well built and reliable it is, not to mention how Hyundai seems to offer things that require a step-up in trim package at competitors. I even tow a fishing boat with that Elantra, and I've never had to fix or replace anything that wasn't a wear part. 166k miles! Anyway, it sold me on Hyundai, that and Hyundai's warranty. I bought an Ioniq 5 this year, keeping the Elantra for home projects and fishing, though.
Scotty, I was so happy to hear you gave a Hyundai, a good 👍. With all the years I have been in the automotive business, which is about 30 +, I think Al the Hyundai models should be rated higher than you do. I am not a salesman or anything to do with the car company. I have friends and neighbors that own them, and they are very satisfied, as we all aren’t full of money in our pockets. I have owned my 2014 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport 2.4 AWD Limited for 2 years and it has not given me a lick of trouble. I drive it normally and it gets from 19-28 mph depending on road conditions. I like this vehicle, and not sure if the engine was changed or rebuilt. It may never had anything
Me and my girlfriend drive Hyundai. She has 2013 Elantra and I have 2020 Ioniq. My 2017 Focus ST is my toy 😏No problems and hers still drives like new almost 10 years old and 70k miles. Hyundai haters annoy the hell outta me. I've owned many makes and models over the years and the worst was 1986 Celica. Swore I'd never get another Toyota. Thought about giving Toyota another chance until I discovered how great a Hyundai can be 🤷♂️
Best review for a car I have ever seen. I feel like I was sitting with my dad talking about cars- everyone needs this no nonsense common sense influence in their lives.
No joke I went to Texas Roadhouse on Saturday with my parents and shockingly enough I actually saw this exact vehicle sitting in the front parking lot area. It looks like an actual car in a way and it looks way better than those stupid futuristic Teslas.
I don't see what's so great about the Tesla's external design, it looks like "cute" car which has a generic car design, that blends in with equally generic car designs.
Out of your mind. I saw one driving down the street, they look like any other hatch back … FUGLY. The pictures make it look good online but that’s it. Tesla all the way.
We recently got the Ioniq 5 AWD, those come with a larger battery and a heat pump so range is actually better than the base RWD. And with 325HP (instant HP, no downshifting or torque converter slippage) now that will put your head back against the headrest. We had a PHEV before this but in the winter it ran the gas motor so much so the heater would work it's was just a hybrid and the EV mode wasn't really EV mode.
Great review! Here in Québec, we know them quite well, those EV's. Harsh climate year round from -30°C (-22°F) to 30°C (86°F) and very thrifty electrical green power. They are very popular, more so than in the rest of Canada and even California, if I may... You nailed it straight to the point!
I drive one daily. It is a dual motor 2024. During the summer I start the day with 330+ miles of range. Mine doesn’t have a rear wiper. It’s very quick and I really like it. It is a beautiful car.
Appreciate the video. It's nice to see an EV that is almost affordable. Looks good and like that it has all the electronics where you can see them. Must have been a great review and test drive for you. Cause you were pretty excited. 👍👍👍
Bought one in middle trim and liked it so much I upgraded to top trim a year later. It beats the Tesla in the most important areas... ride quality, quiet cabin, has real buttons, and actually gets the EPA range numbers (which is 304 mi by the way).. Scotty didn't do his homework before the video. A $300 home charger fills it in 6 hours overnight. Buy one a year old for $30K...fabulous car.
The public transit bus is the most efficient hybrid vehicle. Currently, it doesn’t cost a penny until mid 2023. They have the biggest windows & the most curious smells! LOL
@@slavsouth973 some stupid placed wiring, charging door problems and vibrations from tires 🙂 that's just a few. I can sent pics and more details private if you are serious about buying one 👍
@@JegHadderSarah Hva mente med vibrasjoner fra dekkene, Tobias? At det blir unøvendig mye vibrasjon/støy i førerhuset? Eller fører det til andre problemer?
Scott Ive been watching your vids since I got my first salvage car in 2016, you taught me a lot and I loved how honest you were. Now as Im older and am looking to buy my first brand new car, and this ev was on my radar. You opinion was the decisive factor, ty for your videos
World Car of the Year World EV of the Year World Car Design of the Year EV of the Year by Car and Driver That said, Mr. Kilmer is right. Wait til price drops.
Another pros having a more "normal" acceleration I think is that moving parts in the car's propulsion construction are more likely to last longer then on a "racing" car.
Hey there Scotty, my CH-R you reviewed is still going great! Other than a busted windshield and someone hitting it with a shopping cart 😑 Hope your doing good man!
Oh Scotty reviewed your CH-R, I have to watch that video. My friend just picked up a blue CH-R, I'm surprised that the CH-R is not an ev, being with the name is an abbrevation for Charge, plus it looks futuristic that the CH-R should be an ev vehicle. Sorry to hear you windshield got busted and got hit by a dreaded shopping cart.
Scotty I just got a 2022 Hyundai Elantra SEL. Love the car like driving a computer on wheels what sold me was the warranty it came with 100k/10 year power train, 60k/5 year everything else, 36k/3 year oil change and tire rotation, 7 year unlimited mile anti corrosion on body, 5 year blue link subscription which is absolutely awesome. I'm not crazy on running Quakerstate oil for next 3 year's, but my mpg I'm getting is 35city 45 hwy with A/C on as well living in the desert. I made a great buy for $28k. I got it fresh off the boat literally made in Mar. 17 2022 and bought it on Friday the 13th right off the truck no test drive w/14 miles on it, because they were selling them before they came in.
Scotty is changing his Korean tune, man I have a standard 5 speed 2000 Hyundai Accent with 126,000 miles its running like a champ no repairs, I think I may have got a good one made on Wednesday.................It still blows cold ac and never overheats in Dallas Texas! ,Its funny it just slows down under stress with the ac on high in Dallas but always gets me to the house! Its a dark blue go kart with cold ac and gets 40 miles a gallon, I wont ever sell it!
I had a Mach E on order and Ford jacked up the price by 2K. They refunded my money and I picked up an Ioniq 5. I charge at home on a 220 circuit. I do not have to change oil. I practically never go to a charging station but the 3 times I was at one I never spent more than 20 minutes. I will ever buy another gas car. I get 188 miles range at 80% in winter, 222 miles in summer.
Yeah, oil change is like what 40$? Yes, buy 53k $ electric to avoid oil changes, makes sense. Plus wait till they jack up electricity price, you gonna go back to V8 in no time.
I love me Kona EV as well. never go back to gas and the myriad of problems associated with them. Scotty makes his living dealing with all the problems people present to him regarding gas and diesel cars. And who wants to lose his car for the day for an oil change or drive to this special place called a gas station and stand there in the cold?
What you really get from an EV depends heavily on conditions and driving style. Rated distance is only of interest for comparisons. That said, Hyundai (and Kia) aren't over optimistic like many others.
I just bought a 2023 Ioniq 5 SEL AWD and I absolutely love it! This is my first EV and this is also the first time I see this video that Scotty did a year ago and what he predicted came true! Hyundai gave me around $7000 in discounts and rebates off the MSRP. The dealer had around 8 of these on the lot not including the new Ioniq 6s. The 6 is more like a sedan and my 5 is more like an SUV. Very comfortable and easy to get in and out of. The 6 is much lower to the ground. Thanks Scotty for a great video!!
I've seen one of thoes on my way to work in Houston. The design is eye catching. I had to speed up to see what the hell was it. Its really cool looking
Yes, these cars are very hard to find, unavailable at most dealers........ or very long wait lists. However, you don't necessarily have to overpay. Not all dealers are adding an upcharge. It took a ton of research, phoning, emailing, and follow up, but I just rec'd my Limited AWD and I paid sticker price for it.
Yes! This is the video I was waiting for. Great work Scotty, you did your homework on this car, we need more positive videos for getting away from gasoline powered transportation.
Because we’re melting the world silly billy. Now, please, don’t take my word for it, lol, just go to your favorite search engine and look for something like “What do the majority of scientists have to say about climate change?” Then sit back and learn for a while, silly goose.
scotty is spot on they kept the simple stuff simple and thats what i dispise about teslas. Teslas have the worst light, ac, and wiper control. absolutely hate it.
A big plus is the V2L system which allows you to draw current from the battery to any AC 230V you may have around, up to 3.6 kW, but that's enough to power all the electronics you might need at the same time: washing machine + fridge + microwave + pc and a few lightbulbs.
Get a wallbox at home (3,7 - 11 kw depending on your fusebox) and you can charge the car over night. No need for charging stations, unless you are on a trip far away from home.
I have owned an EV for about 18 months now. No gas stations, rarely a public charger because I charge at home overnight. I can control the charging preferences from my phone. I have not spent a DIME on maintenance aside from a cabin air filter. Front brakes have 90% life left, rears 100% due to regen braking. A smaller sized, not too heavy city/suburb used EV is the way of the future. Deal with it.
$50k + for a small Hyundai? No thank you. I live in the Deep South so AC will suck all the range out of it 😀 Here we need AC 8-9 months out of the year. My Honda Civic costs half that for the EX trim level and 42 mpg on the highway with no range anxiety unless I’m too stupid to gas it up 😂😂😂
Keep in mind that this has a Heat Pump, which is the same technology in Mini-Split A/C systems-they're super efficient. You can run the AC on max in an Ioniq 5 and it'll only use maybe 5% of the battery on a full trip.
@@JustinShidell So I guess you missed the part where he mentioned the guy used the AC on they way over and almost didn't make it to a charger because of diminished range. That is with the computer planning your route for you and supposedly taking such things into account.
Had a Hyundai Kona Uber ride pick me up in Boston. Cool looking vehicle. Driver/owner stated he looses 1/3 of the range in the winter running the heat. Keep the vids coming Scotty! Always look forward to your opinions.
Lots of great in formation. I really hope they can advance EV tech much more in the next few years and hope the price comes down on them. But until then I'll keep waiting.
I almost bought one of these but bought a 2022 Santa Fe SEL with a naturally aspirated 2.5l with an 8sp auto instead; quite the contrast to the 2021 AMG C43 coupé I owned for a while. For 32k that I paid, its a better financial decision over an electric car. But this electric car is amazing; better than stupid Teslas.
Good review. The typical car dashboard is a big plus. I still would never buy it as it's very expensive. Most residential electrical is 15 amp circuits. Businesses typically have 20 amp circuits. Today in Texas, I've received four text and emails to conserve electricity and not use large appliances. Guess what? Charging an electric car is a large appliance.
Actually it seems more practical than most of the ones that have been out but once again first couple years of anything and the other things that you mentioned you would definitely wait unless you got money to throw away but so far this seems to be the more practical electric vehicle I have seen and other than that would be the hybrid Toyota Prius which they're all over the places something they're doing is right
Kia Soul EV Battery Degradation Test After 60k Miles According to Bjørn Nyland, it means that the car has available about 17 kWh, which is roughly 65% of the initial net battery capacity. 🤔
I have the Ioniq 5 SE AWD and routinely get around 300 miles in town...very easy to get 4 miles/Kilowatt. Has a 77.4 KW hour battery. Insanely fast, smooth, and quiet. Hard to go back to gas once you've experienced an EV!
2:41 No, the door sheet metal crease line has nothing to do with aerodynamics and range. It's a radical design style Hyundai has used on the doors of the Elantra and Tuscon.
We’re talking about $67k Canadian, outrageous! I live in a rural region where temps range from -40C to +40C (-40F to +104F), so I’m sure range will continuously be an issue. EV’s are a rarity around these parts where pickups rule.
I just drove cross country Canada (9890 Km) in an EV and I had NO problem with range anxiety whatsoever. I guess If you need a pickup then drive it but I have a Dodge Ram and a Hyundai Kona EV and guess what I drive 99% of the time. Screw the damn Ram. Every time I fill up it is close to $200. Btw soon there will be 1000Km range batteries that charge in 10 minutes. You pickup will be a relic of the past.
I can fill up a gas tank much faster than 18 minutes. I can also have gas freely available with me wherever I go and in case of emergencies, unlike an area to charge my car.
I doubt that’s going to be the norm. One thing is for sure as more people buy this white elephant gasoline stations will have to Jack up the cost of everything.
@L. G. Gas prices are only an issue because "the powers that be" are making it an issue. And most of the people out there who are having trouble with current gas prices I doubt can afford to drop thousands of dollars on a new, POS electric car.
I'm not opposed to electric cars I just wish we would have let them integrate into society more gradually. Someone really needs to come out with a way to convert all these combustion engine cars into electric cars as well. I'm not big on global warming like those idiots bleeding our country are. But being responsible with our resources is practical and good. I would think that eventually we will get to the point where we are swapping out battery packs out of cars and pickups. What most people don't realize is once electric cars become mainstream. We're going to be taxed into Oblivion. Not only will there be a tax on electricity but you will be having to pay tax on every mile you drive. That Legislation has already been approved to some degree
Scotty, I know you've been down on electric and hybrid cars, and with good reason. It is good to see that they are improving. I expect them to keep improving. Remember the 1972 Mustang with a 351 (5.8 liter) 2-barrel that got 164 horsepower? My Honda Fit has 135 horsepower! We all thought that pollution control would kill high performance. Now the lowly 1.5 liter/ 90 cubic inch Honda Fit get 1.5 horsepower per cubic inch! The Ford 289 ci. Hi-Po 289 with its solid lifter cam, 4-barrel carb, and dual exhausts could only manage 271 horsepower. Quite an improvement IMO!
Yikes, they took this guy to the cleaners! A co-worked of mine just bought one of these for MSRP, but they had to drive all the way from Austin, to Katy Texas, because the Hyundai dealership here tried to screw him over on marking the car up to $50k.
Took a taxi in Korea a couple months ago using this type of car. After getting out, I told my wife that it was an EV and she was shocked because it was so unlike most EVs we had been in (Tesla, Chevy Volts, and Nissan LEAF mostly). Still don't trust them, but at least I feel that automakers are starting to head in the right direction with EV car design. Maybe in 2 decades when they figure out how to economically and environmentally build, repair, and recycle the batteries the charging infrastructure will be done as well.
s korea taxi drivers do over 150mi per year. hyundai earned their trust with niro and the truth is out. they make reliable eco cars and more drivers are choosing electric cars.
Hyundai's are good cars and the quality is good. Honda and Toyota should be worried. Our 12 Sonata and 17 Tucson Limited have had zero problems or any issues .. both now over 100,000 miles on each of them .. I maintain them with regular oil changes. I took the chance a bought them on style and their 100,000 mile warranty which I never had to use. These cars run and run and run .
The Hyundai Ioniq 5 is a great car. If you want a EV it's a must test drive. It has good interior room. The rear seats can be adjusted forward to increase the trunk or folded 1/3 - 2/3. It has good all around visibility, you are fine with only the rear camera. You really don't need the highest spec version. The base version has everything you really need. The AWD is very quick. But... All handle no better than a Minivan.
the hood almost looks like the Kia K5 some cars looking at diffrent brands now adays some designs are a little similar because of safety areodynamic requirements I would guess. I've got to say your detailed reviews are the best I know of, idk of another channel whos as professional as you
Few years back, I was driving my mom's 2013 Hyundai Sonata in the freeway when the engine suddenly died on me. Thankfully I was on the right lane so I was able to park on the outer edge but man... if I was driving in the left or middle lane, I could've been in a huge accident... My mom's 2013 Sonata has been having a lot of problems. Everything is cracking and breaking. Never going to buy Hyundai or Kia again.
Don't buy most other cars, including premium cars like benz, bmw, jaguar, land rover, bentley... and so on. Because there's at least 1 car among the bunch that does the same thing. Which leaves you with the choice of.. a horse, or a donkey. But those can suddenly die on you too. There's always the bicycle.
Great review, Scotty! I am in the market for this car and if you approve it, I'll buy it. There isn't any person on the internet that I trust more than you!
Love it that Australia uses 240V outlets so home charging isn't as bad. Now we just need to be able to get the dame cars at somewhat of an affordable price.

As an Ioniq 5 owner, and I love my car, I'm shocked to hear the positivity from Scotty. Finding them at MSRP is possible, but it's tough.
What do you think of the ioniq 6, I like the look of the Kia ev6 but 200 miles on a charge iunno

Good tip!

Why are you in a hurry?
Spot on. SEL AWD owner here and it's a great car to drive. I was shocked at myself. 2 years ago, if you asked me if I'd pay nearly 60k for a hyundai, i would have laughed. Fastforward to 2022... it's probably the only EV worth the money at this time.

I just got one yesterday the 2023 htrac limited awd paid less than sticker cuz of new rebates 🙌
And it is a joy drive long distance without planning, pumping gas in 3 minutes and skipping the long lanes charging stations 😂😂😂😂
I was just saying I have owned 3 Hyundai vehicles and they always give you more bang. The fact that it's equipped to charge with any type is excellent

No joke I went to Texas Roadhouse on Saturday with my parents and shockingly enough I actually saw this exact vehicle sitting in the front parking lot area. It looks like an actual car in a way and it looks way better than those stupid futuristic Teslas.
The instrument panel is way better to see as well!
What about a tesla that looks futuristic?
Tesla's look like egg plants laying on their side

Ioniq 5 AWD Range is rated at around 256 Miles. RWD is rated at about 303, with nominal conditions.
What you really get from an EV depends heavily on conditions and driving style. Rated distance is only of interest for comparisons. That said, Hyundai (and Kia) aren't over optimistic like many others.
“Nominal” meaning driving with no ac on and minimal electricity usage. Good luck getting that.

I watched a video this morning he charged his iOniq 5 from 10-80% in 18.5 minutes. Super fast, not bad really.

This is phenomenal EV in Indonesia. Good job for Hyundai.
Tens of millions of charging stations aren’t going to just “pop up,” and there’s still the tiny fact that cars take hours to recharge.
s korea taxi drivers do over 150mi per year. hyundai earned their trust with niro and the truth is out. they make reliable eco cars and more drivers are choosing electric cars.
Hyundai is killing it these days
Love it that Australia uses 240V outlets so home charging isn't as bad. Now we just need to be able to get the dame cars at somewhat of an affordable price.
