Matte paint is for folks who enjoy washing the car by hand, and/or can afford to pay someone else to wash it by hand on a regular basis. I'm the former, and I really like hand washing my cars, and they never see a car wash. Been that way for the better part of 30 years. I've owned two matte paint cars and actually found them easier to take care of (no polishing, no swirl marks, no waxing). But the killer for most people is, no automated car washes (not even the touchless ones).
BMW always advised never to use a microfiber on their matte “frozen paint”, but many did if it was a new dust free cloth. If there is any contamination on the cloth at all, you’ll be in trouble. In the end, the frozen paints are gorgeous, just not practical. I think an informal BMW poll showed the vast majority of owners would not buy a matte paint again.
The differences between the SEL and Limited are not significant imo. The main things the Limited has over the SEL is: - Heads up display - Sound system (from reviews I heard its not that great) - Ventilated Seats (the main one I care about) - Memory Seats (Driver is memory but passenger is manual in SEL) - Sunroof - Can move Center Console forward and back - Park Assist - 20 inch wheels The main one I would care about is ventilated seats and the rest of the extras are niche to me. If the rest of it is worth the extra $3k then go for it but I think I'm going to go with the SEL. Hope this helps!
I bought the SEL RWD as I’m in FL don’t need AWD rather get higher range. With that being said if you can do without ventilated seats a glass roof a moving console and 20” tires I personally wouldn’t go limited just wasn’t worth the extra $$ to me I got everything I need in SEL and honestly many ppl will get what they need in the SE model . Honestly if you go look at the cars see what’s important to YOU not a bunch of TH-camrs.. yes limited is nice but is it really worth the extra $$ and are your dealers going to mark the limited models up more than the SE or SEL hard to get at invoice at this time
I have the SEL in Shooting star matte. I didn't like losing 60 miles between charges for the awd limited. The vegan leatherette interior and on the SEL is beautiful!
At a crossroad between the same two color options you were and Im questioning the matte finish but also really it. Any chance for a long the update with the color? Great video BTW
I done 3x layers of high quality ceramic coating 10H on the white Matterhorn matte. Used dr Beasley final coat. Wow slick finish. Dropping just flicks off. Fall out particles you can pick off w your nails.
Welp, this talked me out of getting Shooting Star or Gravity Gold. So thank you. I live in a city where we get a lot of salt on our cars in the winter, so I definitely need weekly washes... so regular washing + undercarriage washing is a must.
Thanks for the video! Just picked up my shooting star this evening and found your videos. I must ask have you had many instances with bugs and their residue? How are they to remove when you’ve faced that cleanup? I’d assume power washing still could safely remove them but any confirmation or feedback would be appreciated! Thanks
Did you manage to find an easy way to tackle bugs? I'm considering getting a matte gold here in the UK. I always wash the car at home and enjoy the process :)
Just get a small electric pressure washer and foam cannon. It's the best way yet to gently and thoroughly wash your car. It's also the choice of detail shops everywhere.
Hey there, thanks for this. I have ordered my car but have to make a final decision on the colour and I love the Matte grey that you picked. Any thing to add since your video?
Take some brake parts cleaner or carb cleaner and take off those pink dots from your tires/rims. Just spray on a rag and wipe em off. They'll take forever to come off on their own.
Dave, How are things holding up with the paint and keeping the car clean? We have an EV6 Wind but my wife is having trouble backing it into spaces so we are looking to get into a matte grey GT Line. I take care of the washing and we live in Vermont. Do you think its easy to take care of in the long run?
Huge mistake. Your never wash a vehicle with full force power washer. It will grind the dirt into the paint. At least stand back a little. Especially the matte paint will show the damage. Also when your deal with that kind of paint use 2 buckets. A wash and rinse bucket. Lastly you don't drive the vehicle and let it air dry. You're asking for streaks in your paint.
I detailed cars for almost a decade when I was younger and I disagree with your statement. If a power washer won't scratch a gloss black paint job then it's perfectly fine for ALL other colors
I actually did the exact same thing (change my order from matte grey to digital teal) for the exact same reasons, plus some more, but at the other side of the world (Germany). Also my wife didn't like my color choice, she said that with the matte grey that car looks like a stealth bomber from America, haha.
It’s so easy I did it myself that dr Beasley is good the matte coat ceramic is the best easy way to do I use the bucket to wash by hand rinse with the power wash
Thanks so much for your vids on this. Really love the detail you're going into. I'm on the waiting list for one of these right now and it's giving me lots of pre-info...and I've switched my order to white from matte because this sounds like way too much work for me.
After seeing the 14-pages document on that paint maintenance, I knew I didn't want it. Hope you dont suffer too much in the long run. Congrats on getting the car. Still waiting for mine (black).
Love the look but I gotta be real, this kit is a deal breaker for me. I don't want to have to do this for the life of the car. I fell like it would get me hating the car. To those down for the effort, you will have an eye catching car!
Love the color - good review + details on care - looks great when new and kept up. However matte paint is high maintenance and cuts out any car washes (especially in the winters with snow). Repairing panels or chips is very difficult to match the others. Clear coat paints are so much easier and forgiving it you get scratches or swirls to buff out.. Perfect for the OCD detail DIY person - thats a couple hours cleaning. Most people with matte paint get the entire vehicle wrapped in a matte PPF. That way you can wash it like normal - so much easier. FYI - Some RainX on the exterior windows and glass roof will aid in keeping the windows clean and amazing when driven in the rain.
I have to say the look of this Ionic 5 is starting to grow on me. I always like Kia have owned 3 Kia vehicles (currently a Sorento PHEV and I'm loving it), so my mind used to be set for the EV6 if I am getting my second vehicle. However the special/unique look of this Ionic 5 with more spacious interior and more comfy driving dynamics may win me over if I am in the market for my first EV.
very cool looking car. Been watching your great videos about this car. Can you confirm if tow hitch can be installed? I will need to put my bike rack. :)
Really enjoyed this man. I’m right there with you with just how good that paint looks. I’ve got an SEL reserved in this color and I’ve been going back and forth just like you were…I think I’ve made the right choice and I’m going to stick with it. Thanks for this!
"Welcome to Out of Spec Car Washing." OK, so now that you've shown us this, how about "volunteering" your car to show what it looks like after six months of automatic brush car washes? Come on, somebody's got to do it.... 😄
I have a gravity gold on order and the dealer has recommended a 9H ceramic coating be done before I take delivery. He says if you repeat that every two years (costs about US$500) you can use an auto car wash and ignore all the gloom and doom predictions from doing so! If no-one else has done that happy to share my experience as we go forward.
Well I have now had my car for 18 months during which time it has been through a commercial rotating brush type car wash about 35 times. The finish has remained in showroom condition without a blemish so I recommend a diamond hard clear ceramic coating if you want to be able to take a matte finish vehicle through a commercial car wash.
Thanks for the video. Very informative and my take away from it is simple NEVER BUY A MATTE PAINTED CAR! When I was 22 I bought my first brand new car, a Mustang convertible, and I was very particular about hand washing my car... for the first year and a half. After that, I sent it through the machine like everyone else. This process looked like a lot more work than I put into my old mustang so I know for sure I will get tired of it after a short while.
Seems like more trouble than it’s worth, having to go through all those steps every time you wash the car. Any special requirements or cautions for washing Tesla Model 3’s? Can you take them through a drive through car washes?
Looks great - but how am I supposed to spray all the salt off the undercarriage without going through a car wash? I don’t have a heated shop with a floor drain…
I wash my car old Honda at a local place, $2 for 3 minutes. Wash, wax, then spot free rinse. I then hand dry. Washing this Ioniq looks to be a full time job.
Beautiful car, Dave. I would do what you just did if I were 20 years younger. I’d just use touchless car wash with this car. Now I know the red color piping in the interior only comes with the Matt gray. I agree that the Limited is the way to go with this car.
Beautiful car, and nice info to share. Thanks! The only thing to worry about having a gray or silver car is that they are harder for other drivers to see as they blend in with the street color. I owned a gray Honda wagon for a few years that must have been invisible as cars would turn right in front of it as if they hadn't seen it. 4D
Kyle's dad cleans car by the instructions. Good clean car. Me: dear God; please let it rain, thank you. It rained, me again: yes rain got the bird poop off, it's clean. Seagull at beach: bulls eye, I got the the same car that I pooped on before the last rain.
Omg probably the most uninformed owner .. has no clue what he is doing.. He didnt wash it properly or even rinse it.. shouldn’t do it in the cold… omg i cant count how many mistakes he just committed. Old people should stick to easier things and prepare before they take on this task.

Dave doesn't come as another TH-camr but a dad that likes to talk about cars. Keep it up Dave!
Next time you might want to apply more in sections. 12x12 then more drops. It’s similar to how you apply ceramic spray. Awesome video.

Thanks for the information! Trying to find a limited is difficult! Several SEL and SE available near me. Should I wait for limited or get lower trim?
Wait for the limited. You will regret getting the lower trim.
Wait for limited, the other trims are much worse, only choose if you absolutely need to save cash, do not rush.

lovely to see you caring for the car but there’s quite a lot of opportunity to improve the process and reduce the damage you were causing

Lots to do but worth it for the color!
I have the matte paint too. Have yet to wash it 😅 I did not get a kit with my purchase. In Canada
Thanks for the video
That was really satisfying watching all the dirt and filth getting washed away
Update, please! Do you still have it? Has it become a pain after awhile to have to spend so much time cleaning it?
Hi, do you have any updates to share on the maintenance of the shooting star grey?
Hi, can you pls tell where can I buy the phone holder? is it good for large phones?
Take some brake parts cleaner or carb cleaner and take off those pink dots from your tires/rims. Just spray on a rag and wipe em off. They'll take forever to come off on their own.
Will do! Thx
