There are no real do's and don't as it does not work the same as a retinoid, it's essentially just an anti-oxidant so avoid using oxidants alongside it (like benzoyl peroxide, hypochlorous acid).

0:30: 🧪 Dr. ShireenIdris debunks common myths about retinols in skincare.
4:26: 🔑 Retinols and exfoliating acids are often confused, but they have different effects on the skin.
8:31: 💡 Combining vitamin C and retinol can be beneficial for the skin, but it's important to understand the ingredients and potential irritation.
12:23: 🔑 Using a lower concentration of retinol consistently over time is more beneficial for the skin than using a higher concentration infrequently.
16:22: 😊 When using tretinoin around the eyes, it is important to avoid applying it directly on the eyelids and instead apply it on the bony part of the lower eyelid, buffering it with Vaseline to reduce irritation.

Yes, please do a video on the percentages & types of retinoids, and how we can gradually increase the strength we are using. Is strength linear as you move across different types? (e.g. is the next step from retinyl ester a low retinol (0.25%) and the next step up from 1.0% retinol a retinaldehyde?) Also, I'm afraid to use products that don't state the concentration, as I have sensitive skin - is that a legitimate concern? How safe is it to assume that eye creams with retinol are a lower concentration? If my eye area gets irritated, that sets me back weeks or even months, but that area where eyelid meets cheek is THE place I need retinoids more than anywhere else.

    • @crimbleland
      @crimbleland ปีที่แล้ว +1

You don’t need to specify between an eye cream or moisturizer, so if you have a 1% retinol you like you can use it around the eyes SPARINGLY and only IF you tolerate it. Go low and slow like she says. I’ve gotten myself used to retinAL around my eyes but no more than 1-2x per week, and NEVER use my retinoid (tretinoin) there.

    • @crimbleland

I also want to encourage you especially if you have hooded eyes/natural bags around your eyes to start to love your natural eye shape. There are some “bags” that will never go away and cannot be helped with even the strongest retinoids. Changing my mindset/goals has really helped with my self esteem. Hope this helps!

@@crimbleland Yep I already use a 0.25% retinol for face under my eyes, but looking for guidance on how to know whether eye creams with unspecified concentrations are even a possibility to try (because some have additional ingredients I want to use under eyes only), or if the unknown % is too risky for sensitive skin folks.

    2- Doesn't exfoliate skin
3- can be used with exfoliating acids
4- can be used with vit c
5- low strength can also work, consistency over intensity, number related to type of retinoid is imp
6 - can be used around eyes

Every autumn/winter my skin around my eyes gets dried out, chapped, and really irritated… so I got ahead of it and had an appointment back in September. Instead of treating my dry, cracking skin, she sends me home with fluorouracil cream and tells me it’s because I have Solar damage. The first doctor I ever saw (per my parents) was a dermatologist because of dry skin. I was as not happy… and I’m currently irritated and burning and very pissed off at her right now (since my skin has gotten worse over the past 2 months). Next appointment is in February… but I do t think I can wait that long. My skin hurts 😝

    • @morgianasartre6709

That has been debunked on the basis of basic skin physiology. What he was reffering to is the Hayflick limit, a property of cells discovered by Leonard Hayflick in 1961. He found that there is a limit to the number of times a fully differentiated human cell divides. These cells can only divide about 50 times and then they die. This happens because when cells replicate they lose a little piece from the end of their DNA chain, which is called a telomere. Eventually the telomere becomes so short the cell can no longer reproduce. They key word being "differentiated cells", skin cells come from epidermal stem cells to which this does not apply. The deepest layer of the epidermis is called the stratum basale which consists of basal keratinocyte cells. These are epidermal stem cells. They divide to form two types of cells: keratinocytes (which are “regular” skin cells) or more stem cells. The keratinocytes die and are sloughed off and are replaced by new cells about every 35 days. If the Hayflick limit applied then ANYTHING that scrapes of skin would use up your cells (not just exfoliating): Taking a bath, shaving your face - or your legs - or whatever you shave. Skin scratches and cuts would stop healing at some point.
Criminals could just sand away their finger prints and they wouldn’t grow back. None of these things happen because the Hayflick limit doesn’t apply to epidermal stem cells.

How long is the efficacy of Tretinoin? In other words, when I apply it, how long does it take to "absorb" and start "working" and how long will the effects last? If I apply it tonight, will it still be "working" in the morning? Do the effects of one application last 4 hours or 24 hours, a few days etc?

I started on a 0.025% and only used it once a week for a few weeks then started increasing it to two times a week and so on until I knew my skin was ready to move up to 0.5%. At times I stopped it altogether if I noticed irritation then started slow again and changed how I applied it according to the seasons i.e. retinol sandwich. It's worth perservering

I have started the retinoid journey with retinol and planning on retinal then possibly Tretinoin. I also am planning on using red light therapy panels in my endeavor to age well. I have been doing research on these. I read tonight to “avoid red light therapy if using Retin-A.”I know that is the same as Tretinoin. My questions for you is 1) Is it true that I need to choose between red light therapy and Tretinoin? 2) Does this only apply to Tretinoin or also to lower-strength retinoids? 3) Could I use a red light therapy mask instead of a stronger panel and still use retinoid products?

I especially love that you are not 'pushing' particular products because you receive some sort of financial endorsement unlike other derms on here. I am in Australia and over here it is not recommended, however I have noticed that the peak medical body doesn't exactly rule out using retinoids whilst breastfeeding, more as a caution. Is there any conclusive studies to show that retinoids can be used whilst breastfeeding? Thank you so much

You are completely correct about decreasing the % on RX Tretinoin. I worked with my Dermo and am now using .025% 3x a week. When on a higher % my face looked apple red and actually hurt. :) Sunscreen is a must no matter what!
BTW your Pillowtalk Depuffer is awesome - I bought it for puffy eyes due to to allergies, but as it feels so great will also use it in winter as part of my normal routine. BRAVA! 😉

    Hey,
I have severe to moderate acne and I have been using tret for 2 weeks now along with topical clyndamicin in morning, i have oiliest of the oily skin, however my derm suggested me to not use a moizturiser , i was previously on 2.5 perc Benzoyl peroxide because my acne was very inflaimed. It seems to be a bit calm now , Now i have several side effects of both tret and clyndamicin my skin is itchy, some peeling under the lips, feels burning when water touches but these irritations seem to be managable , Still have acne but i think its under control , i have no sugar or oily junk foods in my diet , i workout every day in morning so need to use cleanser 3 times daily , what else should i do to deal with my acne , i know everything takes time but i have a serious doubt about the moizturiser should i hear my derm or the internet.?
    pls help!!

Hi Dr. Idriss!! Thank you for making us educated. I'm a fellow doctor and your videos honestly are my go to for any skin questions. I always saw myself as one with sensitive skin. Now my questions is: if my skin tolerates it, is "more is more" when it comes to retinols? Like I apply it to my neck, perioral, and periorbital areas with no issues, should I still only use a pea sized amount or using more will have unwanted effects? Thanks 😘

I had used an under eye retinol cream (olay 24 night under eye retinol) and had a mild allergic reaction, stopped after the first use ofcourse. I am absolutely fine with their retinol face cream and have never had any adverse reactions. Since having that one allergic reaction about a week ago, I have terrible fine lines/wrinkles under my eyes now. Anything you can suggest to get these to go away/to heal and IF they will dissappear as they really never were there before but now when i smile i look like i've aged 500 years overnight.

I am currently in esthetics school and I have been off my retinoids for the past 7 months because of it. I plan to get back on once I graduate next month, but in the process of learning I have been really enjoying using my 30% acid blend/light chemical peel product (mandelic acid 10%, salicylic acid 10%, lactic acid 10%). Would you recommend a way to use both if my current Retinoid prescription is only 0.05%? I would obviously have to build up to regular acids with use of a Retinoid first but I just wasn’t sure if that was a possibility at all for the near future. Thank you so much for this informative video!

I think a more accurate representation would be that it does thin the stratum corneum (the dead skin layer), but also thickens the dermis. That dead skin layer is protective though, so I personally feel we shouldn’t be overdoing it (hence why our skin feels so sensitive and sun burn prone using retinol or exfoliants).

Started in July 23 and only had a sensitive spot on my neck. Using 0.05. Thought the tube was defective, but I checked with the manufacturer. No recalls. Plus, I never peeled, flaked or purged except for a small spot on my cheek. Feel lucky or something I'd off. IDK
As far as someone asking if trentinoin can cause cancer, isn't it caused by ingesting Vitamin A in the beta-carotene form? So, not sure if Trent is made out of beta-carotene or regular vitamin A. That might make the difference?

First as all - thank you for that video! It really is such an important topic and finally a lot of these stupid myths are once and for all debunked!
I do have a question and would love to hear your expert opinion. I do use (since about half a year) 5 times a week the Paula 1% retinol without any problems actually. The other 2 days AHa/BHA.
Since about 2 months my skin is literally going very crazy - I get like big fat pimples who do hurt a lot and if one goes away another is coming :-( I do have like 6-7 bumps in the regular (basically just in my beard area - short beard and I tried growing it out as well as shaving and nothing literally nothing works!) so I decided to get on Isotretinoin for a few weeks/months to make my face aka my capital look and feel beautiful again - I got my description from my doctor but idk he is not the best I feel.
Sooo long term short - would you approve that? Or am I crazy and killing my face?
    Merci pour tout!
    Love from Austria!

Dr Idris, I’m 45, African American with freckles. Didn’t start wearing sunscreen until I was 30. Now I’m OCD with wearing daily and reapplying every 2 hours. I’ve been on 0.025 percent retinoid for 3 months. No irritation at all. I apply it with moisturizer and Azaleic acid. Should I increase to a stronger strength or stay on .025 percent for a year and then go up? Or do I need to ever go up? No acne issues. Just using as a wrinkle preventative and to combat sun damage

I used roc under eye retinol in my early 20,s I’m now 42 and I think that’s why I don’t have any under eye wrinkles. I personally didn’t think it would do anything and anytime I had excess mascara that wouldn’t come off with my cleanser I’d just apply more of the roc under eye because I liked it’s consistency. I know it’s not used for that but I actually think using it every night truly helped. I also don’t suffer from dry eyes.

I'm 32 year old, my skin is naturally very resistant, no wrinkles or lines yet. I started to use tretinon 0,5 consistently about a month ago ( I used it inconsistently several times over the years). I can tolerate tretinoin even on my eyelids, but im afraid to damage them, so I dont apply often. I can't tolerate strong retinol or tretinoin on my neck... I use a retinol serum instead. To manage tretinoin dryness, i listen to my skin, and I use natural oils, niacinamide serum, korean creams and mineral sunscreen, during the day, according to the need. If my skin gets flakey, I skip the retinoic one of two nights, or apply sandwiching with moisturizer. My skin is glowing.

Will Prescription .025% Tretinoin work with the Ascorbyl-Tetraisopalmitate 1.0 that I am currently using? My Dermatologist is allowing me to try this strength to help with texture, wrinkles...other issues. Not Acne. I have never had acne...luckily. Just an occasional pimple throughout my 62 yr old life. 1. Can you get tretinoin (retinol) in your hair? ..I get nervous putting it along my hair line
    2. Whennn are they guna come out with a whole body retinoid? Worth it?
Lol I also have dry eyes (contact wearer since a child..I have the worst vision). I get droopy eyes and I have been told to use allergy meds (I do nasonex) & pataday eye drops to help with the swelling. This is making the dry eyes worse 😂it would. I want to get surgery but my eyes… don’t agree.
