If a business says they're like family, chances are they mean they're like abusive parents. Still technically "family".

Yeah i got a grandmother who worked me to the bone like this and got dissapointed when i didnt want to work when it started raining outside while i was sweeping up her backyard. she would rattle on about being a poor old woman yet she'd be working around the house constantly and have more energy than a 5 year old going to a toy store.

I just went to an interview where they said that. Got very bad vibes from the people there, and had to sign NDA before doing the interview. Another thing one of the guys said “this whole thing is my baby”. Which I took as meaning super controlling asshole manager.

I got a job at a company which this was said in the interview. I ended up walking out after two weeks as they were expecting people to work 12 hour shifts with no break, go home and then return in five hours for the next 12 hour shift (the minimum legal requirement in my country is a 20 minute break if working a shift over four hours and 11 hours rest period between shifts). They also didn't provide the legally required training or safety standards.

I literally had an interview a couple of days ago to be a graphic designer. They emailed me to do an "interview" over discord which only consisted of the questions:
"You applied to this job, right?"
"Please state in two to three sentences why you are fit well for the position"
They never responded after that. Instead, their discord status said they were playing Apex Legends.

I get a bunch of scams for that, use google hangouts and they ask the same exact questions, just in a different order. You will suddenly be hired after the interview being paid 20-25 per hour. You are just talking to a bot the whole time and then they ask how do you want your money. Mail or direct deposit, once I said mail, they stopped sending messages.

An old manager once told me that he in his 30+ year experience of hiring and interviewing, he found that people who got visibly nervous in interviews generally ended up being better workers than those that were confident in the interview process.

    • @writershard5065
      @writershard5065 4 ปีที่แล้ว +35

Mostly because those people care about the interview most of the time. They want to work with you, which is why they're afraid of doing things wrong, and hence why they're nervous.

    • @XxLifeInFuneralXx

Based on a true story. In other words, some people generally are no good at interviews (nervousness, anxiety or whatever) but when their actually put in the work place situation, the performance is better.

    • @masterblaster2678

I mean I'm no interviewer, but if I had 2 interviewees and if one of them was nervous but still giving fair answers, and the other is a confident, careless know-it-all, I would definitely go for the former. If the careless guy doesn't care about the interview at all, why would he care about the job? Would probably take random leaves because he just couldn't wake up that day.

    1) Red flag #1. During interview, no mention of the actual tasks/work you'll be doing.
    2) Red flag #2. The interviewer more or less has to convince you to join the company because "they are a great company to work for".
    3) Red flag #3. When inquiring about pay, there is a slight pause, and then deflection that doesn't really specify how much you'll get paid, rather there is potential for "up to $$$ per hour".
    4) Red flag #4. A current employee rage quits during your interview.
    5) Red flag #5. You've overlooked all previous red flags, just to see what they'll do next, when they bring out the paperwork for you to sign, no need to read it before you sign, they say, as you'll be taking the job. *In case you don't already know,* never sign anything until you have read it, agree with it completely, and agree to comply with the terms in the contract or agreement. If it doesn't mention what you'll be paid, that's a sliding scale meaning they'll decide how much they think your work is worth to them once you've started working. If it doesn't mention the work you'll be doing, or "other activities/tasks" is listed, that means you'll be doing whatever they tell you to do if you want to get paid whatever they think your work is worth.
    6) Red flag #6. You've asked several questions regarding pay and tasks you'll be doing, but they all result in deflections and vague responses. The simple solution is to thank them for their time, and leave. If they can't say it to you, already that shows you they don't trust you to make a reasonable decision knowing all the facts, and are relying on you making an impulsive decision because "your basic instincts crave money".
    7) Red flag #7. There is a fee for starting kit, uniform, background check, or a clause to lease a machine for a monthly fee for at least one year. (this one cost me $5,000, and you get it for free. A BARGAIN!)
    8) Red flag #8. You do a lot of work by going places, putting in effort, but you are paid entirely by what you _do_ sell without any compensation for using your own vehicle to do so.
Like one of my favorite anime quotes goes, "if you can't say it to me, I can't sell it to you." -Lina Inverse - Slayers
"to the pure you show yourself pure, but to the devious you show yourself shrewd." - Psalm 18:26 - NIV Bible

    Half hour Unpaid lunches.
I used to prance around and do what I wanted when others worked. It was a huge political issue with everyone.
Soon after I was confronted and told to keep working during the half hour unpaid lunch.
I called the department of labor and reported it, which pushed a full labor law investigation.

I went to a hiring agency when I was unemployed a while back, since I had had good luck with the last one I worked with. The first thing I was asked to do was put in my bank information for an account that they would use to pay me, only accessible through a card they would provide, with a long list of fees that would apply on the account/transaction. Immediately walked out.

    • @1ntoTheAbyss
      @1ntoTheAbyss 4 ปีที่แล้ว +16

Easy work around. Had this too. The first withdrawal on every paycheck to the card is fee free. So take the card in to the bank and have a money transfer from to card to your checking or savings. There's three key things while doing this. 1. Know the full amount you receive on the card by checking it online for the balance to draw out all the exact monies and leave nothing on the card. 2. Keep activation sticker on the card to cover up the fact that it's a debit card. Which leads to number 3. Find a newer employee because the senior employees can be sticklers and put up a fuss when you try and do the transfer. Follow those three things and you won't have much of an issue.

If the mood of the employees is one of anger.
I walked into an interview for sorter in a mail room for an insurance company. I had to walk through the mail room to reach the manager's office. The anger and hostility wasn't directed at me, but I could literally feel it like a hot buzz of electricity on my skin. I got the job and started the next day. I had only been on the job 20 minutes when the manager told me I was too slow and it looked like she'd have to fire me. I was there about 4 months. During that time the manager would harass and insult the employees in front of each other, prevent you from getting work done by talking to you about her daughter and husband and then get mad that you had paid attention to her instead of ignoring her. Or she would get mad that you would tell her you were sorry but you had to work and didn't have time to chat. She would spread rumours and turn people against each other. She never apologised after reaming someone out for a supposed mistake only to find that no mistake was made. Her response? "Oh", and walking away. The employees would openly admit that they hated. I developed painful repetitive strain injury and had to go slower, and she wouldn't move me to a position that would be less demanding on my wrists. As a result, I was too slow and she fired me. I had to turn in my key card and badge to the security guard. As I walked toward him he noticed my relief. He said, "Oh, you were fired?" I asked how he knew. He said because I was smiling, and that I wouldn't believe how many people had walked out of there smiling because they'd gotten fired. I should've trusted my gut as soon as I walked in that place, and noped out of the interview.

They hired me right at the spot with (no work experience) so I came in the next day, and they wouldn’t let me do my online training, and they pushed me straight into the cash register. When i finished my shift i looked at my schedule. And they scheduled me everyday, over 40 hours a week. I talked to my manager about my schedule and the bastard said “oh thats just your training after that your schedule will be part time”. 2 weeks has passed, schedule was still the same.
Also it was fucking retail, and it was always busy in there. And that’s not the worst part, the staff are so unprofessional and greedy, they would never help me. Sorry, but if I saw a lawyer committing obvious malpractice in front of me, I would absolutely report it; it would be a moral travesty to do otherwise, but yet these national organizations are encouraging this sort of yes-man behavior and promoting unscrupulousness.

There have been 2 instances where i have had serious red flag popping up.
First one was when job interview turned out to be attempt to recruit me into pyramid scheme.. everything beforehand pretty much suggested regular job interview.
It was job offer from facebook group (which is pretty common where i live and is 99 percent trustworthy here). So i go to interview and they talk about company. No red flags at initial introduction. And then "yeah, we have like x levels of membership, basically you get discounts each level and from level 2 up, you get x ammount of money for that membership. of course at entry level you have to pay, but if you are already level 2 after referring 3 friends, we pay you!"
it continued on to be crystal example of pyramid scheme bs. To "interviewers" credit, he did hide it well, but it was still so obvious, especially since he tried to make me get that membership. Only reason i didnt give that person in to police was because i lost all contact info by the time i got home (he did give me business card, but i lost it before making it home).
Second one was before my current job. It was for IT job. Basically interview location was the problem this time. I mean sorry, you can be as potentially great company with brightest of futures, but honestly, if your interview spot of choice is small room with a large file cabinet, 2 old desks, both supporting personal laptops and 3 old chairs, with nothing else in the room, with room itself having uncovered concrete floor and paint chipping from walls... Im sorry, but thats as big a red flag as it can be. Oh and it happened to be the office, as other employee was doing work right next to us.
Now, im not very demanding when it comes to work space and with all honesty, i mightve even worked there, had the interview been done anywhere else. Employers- if you do an interview and your office is below par (even if for just a moment), please, do it in a cafe or even a park..

This is to explain the "paying money to begin".
I worked as a stagehand for several years. When I started there was a "$100 application fee" just to apply for the job. Basically, it's so they don't waste their time interviewing deadbeats, druggies, drunks, kids that just want to get backstage at concerts, etc. If they hire you, they give you a $100 tax free bonus on your first paycheck. If they don't, they tear up the check in the office while you're still there.
In my city (Pittsburgh) there is actually a lot of turn over. People are constantly getting gigs as roadies, or they're hired on to Playhouses as technical directors. With our close proximity to NYC (relative), we receive a lot of orders for set pieces from Broadway (I worked on some scenery for the first run of The Lion King). Our shop also repairs set pieces for touring shows (anything from Blue's Clues On Ice to Miss Saigon). Fun job most of the time, but it will burn you out quick (I had several 26+ hour days loading in and out the second stage at Ozzfest, then jumping over to the main stage to send Ozzy's set off to their next date).

If you don't want a receptionist I respect that, but the bait and switch routine to see if people were go for a sales spot because they're already there....no. Doesn't sound like an honest company if you have to start out with lying already.

The only time where one needs to buy stuff for work that’s is okay in my book is something like shoes, pants, or your own tool set to do the work. When I mean tool set I mean something along the lines that you got a job as a cook and you need to get your own stuff. In some/many cases, they’ll allow some grace time for it if you need buy them after you get paid a bit for whatever reason

Put in for a job at Home Depot last year. Initial interview I had was fine, but when the lady found out I wanted full time she had me come back to interview a second time with the manager for stocking, so we could discuss a full time position. Come back two days later. Sit down, and lady says she just wants to make it quick. Start talking about how I'd like a position, preferably full time doing stock. "Well we may only have part time, but if we get full we can bump you up". Sounds fine to me. I bring up their policy on overtime. "We'll never have you doing overtime, we haven't even got a full time position right now". She gets really defensive about overtime and says that if something comes open she'll call me. Never get called back.

Had a job interview at a cafe for a kitchen assistant.
They booked the time without contacting me to make sure I was available at that time (I had course and was luckily able to make it - just). Applications was sent via Facebook and received the job interview time via Facebook messenger.
During the interview I told them the times I was available. They said that would work, but the job ad information and what the actual work would be were two different things. Ad said that you’d work with someone, during the interview they road I’d be in the kitchen by myself. (As a newbie with very little previous work experience)
Then three weeks after the interview they contacted me through Facebook messenger with the information for a job trial. I’d previously given them dates and times that I would be available after course and when my course finished up for the year. They set the trial period for during my course hours - when I would be in class and unable to attend. I saw the interviewer write down the information about times/dates. They had my cv and could call/text/email me. They chose not to.
I knew pretty well straight away that I wasn’t going to work there.
I had applied for another job at the same time and am currently working there now. My manager had clear communication from day one - still communicates clearly. I was in class when I got the call about the interview timesWe sorted out an interview time together (texted as I couldn’t reach them via calling)
Was offered a job about 2 hours after the interview - referees were contacted after interview too.

I flyed across the country. Around 3 hours on a plane (Norway). It was the people I was interwied for that booked the plane, and paid for every expence I made on the way (food, drink, transportation to and from the airport). And they forgot me on the airport... (they said that they would get me) and noone picked up the phone when I tried calling them.

You can be damn sure that last one is Disney. I've heard similar stories including Swoozie's (he's got a whole saga related to this) about how Disney handles employees, including work behind the scenes. And yes, Disney offers this to new hires who are getting fresh out of high school. Disney as a company has been on one hell of a slippery slope for a while and you can count on the fact if they are **that** horrible to sue a family in mourning because a family put Spiderman on their child's headstone, then I'm positive that they would do something like trapping their future employees into a binding contract that basically makes them their financial bitch for life. Fuck Disney. You would think such a place that owns "the happiest place on earth" would at least match that projection, but to no surprise its the exact opposite. Seedy tunnels under their parks, legal teams crusading against the families that simply want to promote the happiness they present us, regurgitated titles of once beloved classics now tarnished with such inclusive/woke political crap which is not just biased but straight-up evil. Along with dipping their hands into such a legacy as Stan Lee's and claiming it all for themselves.... but what about Stan's family? No such right to inheritance? But Nazi-ass Disney can just buy the thing like an old sweater from a fucking yard sale..... Disney mocks our way of happiness and our way of family togetherness and they expect us to conform to their projected ways of life through their new developed titles, while also taking in the brainwash of their over-polished rides and theme parks. Its the circle to their own source of capitalism and we just let them have it because they weren't so bad before. but now, Blackrock owns it(worth ~$43tril) and here they are, burning it all down..... as big of a company Disney is(and as cool as you may think they are) its time to grow up, make your own happiness, and to help purge this money giant to death. Only then will we ever get a chance to see great people do awesome things again like we dream about "in the old days"

If you ask them about the company's emphasis on work-life balance and flexibility, and they respond "well you can work from home", just leave.
That happened in my job interview for my first professional job earlier this year. I left after 2 months because of how unbearably abusive it was to the point that I literally developed PTSD and needed to get professional help. Please save yourselves.

Did 84 hours a week of work, (7 days a week, for a 21 day shift out of province mostly, sometimes longer, back in the day 2012-14 6-7 weeks at a time without knowing when you were going home)
Some people take work for granted, the job was heavy construction, very physically demanding and sometimes dangerous, some people take work for granted and I'm just glad I dont do those hard hours (been at it since I was 17) now its slowed down a bit which is nice, get to spend time with my newly family and things havent been better :) and the Pay is real good btw 👍

Had an interview for this Doggy Daycare/Boarding place near an airport, it went really well & thought the manager liked me. I call on Monday to find out that the manager had left and the new manager wasn't gonna hire anyone in the first place.

I interviewed at a place where the CEO told me "we are not a 9 to 5 company". I was interviewing for a part time hourly position so I didn't care. My job was great but the salaried full-timers really worked their asses off at that place. Their salaries sounded high but I actually made much more per hour.

Had to search for this video (and others like it) to drop this gem. Currently looking for other jobs. Came across one that preaches about their culture BEFORE even describing the position. As in multiple lines about it. They also posted that the company offers unrivaled flexibility, and goes on to say that it’s not about the hours you work, its about results. As if this is a bonus for working for them: working more for the same amount of money. Yeah, no. I love going above and beyond but not unrivaled flexibility. I value my work/home life and won't give that up for company culture.

Recruiting agency was dodgy where the client took control of the interview process and they didn’t know when the interview was happening, then finally had the second interview and client did not show up. They wanted to reschedule very last minute such as on the day. I said I was no longer interested
