      I honestly have that kind of atmosphere in my department at work. (very small department, only about 10 employees) I gotta say, it is actually quite nice, but if you hear that in the interview from the manager or hiring person, it's deffo a red flag. That atmosphere is something that you have to work up to with coworkers whose company you enjoy. Plus it also helps if you all hate the company you work for lmao

    • @RudraNaik

      You should try it. This happened to me in one of my previous roles. I'd been working for 2 weeks straight, right through the weekends. After it was all over I started walking out at 4pm on a Tuesday. Someone at my manager's hierarchy tried telling me 'you should leave only when you feel like you've worked enough '. I was irritable & angry enough for having missed two weekends, and this one blew me right off. I retorted saying I should have left at 11 am then today! I'm late!
      That was the last time someone from that company tried lecturing me on leaving at my own time.

      @The aqua mage Yeah that's kind of the point though is that if you can get 40 hours worth of work done in under 40 hours you shouldn't be punished for that just because other people at your job are taking longer to do things in order to make sure that they're hitting a certain hour mark it should matter based on your productivity Also most places that are like this are not paid hourly they are paid salary so the amount of hours that they work really shouldn't matter anyways

    • @complainer406

      @The aqua mage Companies also abuse that "if you feel like you've done work for today" nonsense to get people to work more than what they are paid for, why would we be ok when companies abuse 'flexible hours' but not ok when people do? As a general principle, unless you're an owner or a major stockholder of a company, it's in your interest to side with people first, companies second.

      In my experience, the family phrase is a major red flag, because any manager who uses it feels entitled to your emotional investment into this job and will expect unpaid overwork. If you try to set boundaries they’ll emotionally manipulate to make you feel guilty for “acting like a stranger” and “not caring”. Not a healthy work environment by any means. I guess it's different in Japan then.
      I'm a foreigner and had interviewed at this small Japanese company which I really liked. When I asked what their company culture was like they said because they're small so they work well together like a family.
      Then they said that the office would be moving and so I mentioned that I would be moving as well. One of them had asked me about it a bit more just to make small talk I reckon and I'd said a bit too much (I was too comfortable at that point oops) and the main decision maker told me "Ah, you don't have to say that much. I had an interview for a graduate PR job last year where I was required to pitch an idea to the company. I thought this was pretty normal and honestly, it probably is just standard procedure. I was rejected afterwards though, as other candidates had more experience than me - which is completely fair enough. However, it wasn't until very recently when I saw that a certain popular music artist was on the cover of a certain popular music magazine that I noticed something a little dodgy. This cover story was my exact pitch. These were my exact ideas - the artist, the publication, the story, even the PHOTOGRAPHER. It could be a coincidence, sure. But it’s just very interesting that a few months after I pitched these things to the company, they're a reality. Let's just say I'll be a little more careful/hesitant doing free labour for just the initial interview in future!

      @discogoth 3 ปีที่แล้ว +27

      Yup. I always ask the interviewer (who’s usually in management or HR) what their employees like about their job and what suggestions or concerns their employees have. Usually you can tell, from body language and such, if they’re being truthful. I accepted my current job because the manager told me outright “our employees are a close knit group and spend a lot of time together, and we have a competitive benefits package (hands me handout on it) and you make a base wage plus a shift differential and tips. The flip side is it’s a fast paced, very social environment and if you’re introverted or a more methodical worker, it may not be comfortable for you”. Then he explained that their turnover rate is far lower than most food establishments but “it is still food service, and while we try to mediate the biggest challenges employees face, we can’t totally eliminate all of them”. Then he outlined what they’re doing to make food service bearable for the employees. I was offered and accepted the job on the spot and I’ve been there 2 years. I’ve also learned to ask about the turnover rate. Many blue collar and service sector jobs have an extremely high turnover rate, and if I see that average employment of 9-12 months, I’m walking away.

I was literally the VERY LAST division to get the old uniform and they took out hundreds of dollars of my first pay check to pay for the uniforms that would be useless in a couple months. Then I get to my training school and I have to buy a whole new set of uniforms and my clothing allowance was less than 100 dollars which was supposed to account for repairs, not an entire new set of uniforms, which outted me a few more hundred dollars. Then they cancelled my flight to my first command on accident and the center that deals with flights was closed so I was told to just buy a new plane ticket (for $400) with my own money and the first class would help me get it reimbursed once we were on island. Never got reimbursed.

Seemed like they were trying to figure out if the rest of my life mattered to me. I took the job and left after the manager texted me while I was at the hospital for a minor surgery; telling me I needed to drop a package off at the post office TODAY, as it was unacceptable I didn’t do so before my procedure. I would have more sympathy if public school teachers agreed with school choice and tax credits going to wherever the students go. Most public school teachers are against that because the job security is pretty good when the money doesn't follow the child and the parent doesn't have a choice on where the child goes.

    • @cheshirenevande4701
      @cheshirenevande4701 3 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      @@jfast8256 Except for the fact that ones with money are the only ones whose children will be benefitting. The money already follows the child in the form of property taxes. It's why wealthy areas have great schools with all the resources and get more grants from the government for BEING great schools, yet poorer areas have worse schools with few to no resources-and fail to receive government grants as they can't produce the same results as wealthy schools. Also, not everyone has the time, money, or ability to drive their child to school, why do you think school buses exist? Continuing on that note, are you even aware that there used to be buses for each level of schooling instead of one bus for an elementary, middle, and high school route? Money was why that system went, and the money sure as hell did not go to the teachers, who really only make decent money in private schools or New York. Everywhere else, they can be looking at 26k a year, less in some states. That doesný included the fact that classroom supplies and decorations are usually not included in any schools budget, si teachers pay out of pocket for those, and yes, that includes all the pencils Billy and Mandy never return. Did you think those "classroom donations" lasted all year? That's usually 10 boxes of tissues for 25-32 kids when cold season and allergies hit. Yet tissues and pencils and paper still have to be supplied by someone.
      School choice is fine, but the current wording of every bill introduced so far undermines the already crumbling, stressed, pathetically underfunded to the point of laughter, over - (and at the same time) under-regulated school system. A system that stands out as guaranteeing each child an education until the age of eighteen or legal withdrawal, for FREE. This is important because the same people that can't afford to drive a child to their preferred school are the same ones who can't afford to pay tuition. And without an education where will those children be but trapped in a never-ending cycle that is ALREADY hard to break free from?
      Children need teachers to learn, but learning doesn't solely rely on teachers. Everything from exposure to appropriate stimuli at the right age, access to health care, quantity and quality of food, the feeling of being secure in their own homes affects children.
      Shools themselves are not isolated towers of knowledge. They take administrators, government oversight, nurses to make sure children with health issues get their meds on time, cafeteria workers, bus drivers, and janitors, mechanics for the buses, suppliers for the food and mountains of paper and office supplies and drivers to get them there, librarians so the children have free access to books and aid in learning research skills, and extracurricular activities that keep the child social, mental, and physical health in mind.
      tl;dr You sure seem to have all the answers on such a complex issue. Especially on the extravagant budget allocated to education in general and teacher's salaries.

      This has happened to me. One time I was hired as a barista at a beach side cafe, and they wouldn't even let me make coffee and sent me to do dishes. Then they hired a dishwasher. They wouldn't show me what a typical day looked like or any kind of routine and then they fired me because I wasn't helping enough. 0/10 worst job I ever had.
      Another job I had, I was helping open a restaurant again as a barista which was supposed to be a really cool experience with all my coworkers. Until I had to undergo emergency surgery and missed all of the training where we learned our routines and recipes. They never gave me the time or energy to make up for this and I was only out for 2 weeks. I left that job because I couldn't stand not knowing what I was doing and begging for help but getting none. I wasn't even on a busy shift, so there was no excuse. They were like "closers aren't preparing anything" um yeah dude 1. I'm a barista and 2. I don't know the recipes that you spent 2 weeks teaching everyone else. And nobody has taught me any of them period. What am I supposed to do then, huh? 1/10 if I didn't get sick it probably would've been okay.... @@xXHollysoxXx Disorganised training is the worst. My first graduate job where my buddy/mentor was supposed to train me and even had her productivity stats lowered for the first few months to accommodate this was never available to help, always brushed me off with the 'I'm busy' excuse and never took the time out of her day to explain to me where or how I went wrong when I made a mistake.
      She was just focused on keeping her high productivity stats so I was forced to ask others around me for help who had been taking on my buddy's workload to cover her training time with me, so most times they were a bit annoyed. My manager was fully aware of this and had received similar complaints about her in the past but still did nothing about it, so I was practically clueless during the majority of my probation period. This also happened to new some new staff that started after me and they didn't last long enough to pass probation so idk how I managed it. I was too naive at the time but I should have paid more attention to what people said about the person I replaced. Apparently she never got along with him despite her desk being right his and apparently he always had some dislike towards her. Now I know why.
      Turns out that place was very toxic and all they cared about were management, stats and money, which resulted in high employee turnover and even lower staff morale than when I started (which I didn't know was possible). So glad I'm no longer there but I am still struggling mentally from that whole "work experience". That place had an unspoken expectation that you worked overtime without pay and even sacrifice your weekends to get work done at home, again without pay. But no, the manager's favourites, like my buddy, obviously didn't have to because they allowed her to leave on time and have a life, even though she was not doing her actual job of supporting staff. She eventually became a manager somehow and I do feel very bad for people in her team because she is not supportive at all.

      I got side eyed for actually finishing on time every day.
      Unless they pay me I'm not staying.
      I've seen people break from this kind of stress and I won't repeat their mistakes.

    Its always so disappointing when you apply to a job and they dont respond. They dont even reject you they just stop responding. I applied for a job and they were all excited and sent me the paperwork and I filed it out and was like ok now what and they never responded again!

    I got an interview at a bargain shop that hadn't opened yet and the email just said "Come down around 12" - I got there early, knocked on the door a few minutes before 12 (they didn't give me any instructions so I just had to stand in the street looking dodgy) and someone came out and said the manager would be two minutes. I waited, then someone else came out and also said the manager would be two minutes, by the time he came down it had been twenty minutes and he was escorting a group of people out (they'd been in there at least 40 minutes) and his excuse was "we were chatting". We went upstairs into the 'office' where he said "sorry, we don't have any chairs, we'll just stand" and then said he's not even the manager, it's his first day too and that this was actually more of an informal chat than an interview (also encouraged me to remove my mask which was....... yikes) he asked me NOTHING relating to the job, just asked about my degree (which is in film, not at all relevant) and because I was applying for it as a second job, he was incredibly interested in my other job (it's only a few hours on a weekend) then the actual manager came in, the brought just one chair in and made me sit so it was like being looked down on by a school teacher, she also was HIGHLY interested in my job and said I would have to sign confidentiality contracts so I don't go telling their secrets (they've been a company for like 3 months idk who they think they are) and was asking how my other job felt about me getting a 2nd one and I was just like......... they're happy for me?? and then she handed me some forms to fill out at home and said she would be in contact either later that afternoon or the next day. I was in there less than 10 minutes, I'd waited outside longer than I'd been in there. I never filled out the forms, and I never heard from her again.

    I applied for a job last week. Last week and this week I am working most days doing 12hr shifts. I cant attend the date they have the video interview. So I emailed them the dates on that same week that I can do. So they call me and leave me a voicemail saying 'what days can you do?'. When I got home at 9pm I emailed them the days again and explained Im working a lot this week so I wont be able to call them. So they called me again the next day. Dont think I can work for a company that cant read or email

    My biggest one has been interviewers saying something along the lines of "We're looking for someone who's passionate about and dedicated to the position." and when I reply something like "This is a data entry position..." they get very upset or defensive. Another (not)favourite is when they ask what prompted me to apply for the position and get disapproving or dismissive when I say "Because I'm unemployed/hate my current job, and meet the stated qualifications and skills for this position."

      Being motivated for a job is kinda a security thing for the company, so they know you wont leave the job after like a year. Thats why they would rather have someone who likes the work and likes the company, than someone who does it just for the money or because they need too. I mean if you said you only applied for the job because you are unemployed, then you seem really unengaged, compared to someone who might love the thing they do and the company and the things that it does. I would also chose the person who loves the job and not the person who only applies because she has too.

      @@TKDDLJ09 fair, but in my personal experience, people know that and want to seem like they really like and want the job just to get it then end up leaving as soon as the can anyway. The jobs I've enjoyed the most are ones that I'm honest in the interview and the interviewer appreciates the honesty. I don't dislike my mostly data entry job, but I was honest when they asked why I wanted it and they said "Fair enough. You're qualified, and I prefer someone who has the skills and is honest to someone who would walk in here and lie to get it."

    They won’t tell you where the job is. I know that’s not ‘subtle’, but I’ve had interviews where I applied for a job advertised in one place, and when I ask they say ‘oh we have locations all over looking to fill positions.’… yes, but where will the job I’m applying for be located?

    One red flag I had but didn't notice was, during the "orientation" we had an hour to get through everything because of covid. The company I work for has a sexual harassment policy handbook. Instead of going through this very important handbook, the hr representative said she "trusted we would read it at home and that we had to end because we could only be in there for an hour". Quite shady in my eyes.
