    I'd like to think this is why stereotypical pirates wear eyepatches.

    • @Daelyah
      @Daelyah 5 ปีที่แล้ว +454

      ...the eyepatches were actually worn because many pirates from centuries ago believed you strengthened your eyes by letting one rest while focusing with the other. Actually kinda helps out a bit with eye strain issues.

      @@Daelyah pretty sure it was actually something to do with going between top deck and lower deck because it was super dark below deck so they would keep one eye in darkness so when they we below deck they didn't have to wait for the eyes to adjust they'd just adjust the patch so the eye was revealed and it would already be accustomed to the dark

    • @RoxetWajdi
      @RoxetWajdi 5 ปีที่แล้ว +148

      the eye patches were used by pirates to change brightness setting on their eyes. For what you asked? When theres a ship to be raid they'll go to the under deck and might need extra boost of brightness that's where the eye patch use comes in. Switch them and you suddenly have night vision.

      In my city we used to use canaries in the chalk mines. When the canary died it meant you had a couple minutes to get out before you died as it meant the mines were releasing sulfur dioxide. Hence "the canaries" nickname for our football club, the animal has kind of become a mascot for our city.

      @@aliasofanalias7448 That's kinda simplifying to absurdity. It be nice if nature was that simple. Cats can survive off of sea water, even tho it dehydrates humans. They're much smaller, yet have much better kidneys. Canaries breathing a million miles an hour and constantly saturating their blood with surrounding gases (including them not having the complex protection mechanisms like human lungs) makes them perfect for this. Also they're pocket size, which is very helpful for carrying purposes. Oh and also, a single full breath of pure CO2 can make a human start convulsing, so even with all our complexity we can still be extremely fragile.

      Was just about to leave this comment! Don't put rabbits upside down ever, they can break their backs if they panic! My rabbit of 12 years hates being held, but all rodents and rabbits LOVE to be pet on their nose bridge (very very lightly as it is a fragile bone) and up their head. If you listen realllly closely in a silent room and sometimes my rabbit will "sigh" very softly as she falls asleep.

      On top of the fact that Kangaroos are absolutely monstrously jacked, they have claws that are sharp enough to rip you to shreds. They're terrifying creatures honestly. The best thing to do if you're being approached by one is to do what that one poster said and back away slowly with your side facing them. It's also good to keep in mind that they can't walk backwards. Don't run either. Kangaroos are deceptively quick.

      I can confirm that it is indeed dangerous to "box" with a kangaroo.
      Their most common method of dealing with attackers (like dogs, for eg) is the grab them with their front paws in a hug, (pro tip: it's not really a hug) then reach up with their back foot (which is furnished with massive claws) and gut their victim like a fish. Doing this to humans isn't much of a stretch for them.
      Kangaroos are nasty, and will fuck you up fast. It's really best not to go near them at all.
      Don't get me started on koalas....

    There was one time I was at a house full of cats and had a seizure. Not the flop-on-the-ground-and-foamy-mouth types, but my brain basically shuts my thinking off and my will to do anything is sapped. (the wheel's turning but the hamster's asleep/the lights are on but nobody's home)
    I sat myself against the couch on the floor since my balance goes out the window and basically fell asleep while conscious. When I came out of it I was covered in cats.
    They were in my lap, on my legs, next to me, in the couch behind me, a small one was draped over my neck and shoulders, and one was resting its head on mine. Pretty sure a kitten was trying to climb into my hoodie pocket.
    I like cats and most of said felines were friendly to me, but I didn't expect to reboot in a cat sweater.

    The whole “alpha” dynamic in wolf packs is completely false. This is based on research from the findings of a single man decades ago, after observing several wolf packs, and much later in life, fairly recently, the same said man tried to reprove that theory. It turns out he found that that “alphas” were actually just parents usually. After discovering this, he tried to fix his mistake and even wrote a book on it, but the idea of wolf packs relying on dominance was so ingrained in the modern consciousness that his efforts were useless.
    On that note, _do not_ force a dog on their back. Not only does it often not work, but when it _does_ it’s not because of an instinct to obey the “alpha”. It’s learned helplessness, and it’s very psychologically damaging.

      It depends on the situation and the dog,
      If the dog is going berserk but still petable by you, just calm it down with calm body language and a calm voice, but if the dog is straight up attacking people or other dogs, yeah grab the dude and push him to the floor until he calms down, it helps also if afterwards you give a lot of attention to the thing it was attacking afterwards, it further reinforces that they (the dog) were wrong. You only do the grab and push to the floor if the dog is in the middle of fighting something, not just if it’s barking and being territorial.

    I love playing with stray dogs, here are some points I have:
    - when approaching a dog, let them sniff back of your hand and never show front. Let them come;
    - a barking dog can be befriended easily, a growling one cannot, stay away from growling dog;
    - never go for puppies first, their mother are far more protective and can attack;
    - if dogs are barking at you on street, cross the street, they will calm mostly;
    - respect hierarchy of their pack;
    - every dog has different points they love rubbing, pay attention and they will love you like none other.
    PS: Parrots love drama, I can confirm.

    As a big cat person, I can help with communicating. Make eye contact with your cat and slowly blink your eyes a few time and or slowly squint them. You might get a response. If you get a blink/wink/or squint from your furball, that is a sign of trust.
    In a nutshell, cats don't have normal eye lids and no need to blink because they have something called "haws" it's a vertical "eyelid" that serves the purpose of an eyelid without the cat needing to actually close their eyes. If you can get your cat to blink at you with their eyelids, it means they trust you. Cats are predatory animals and are always on alert. If you can get your cat to blink at you, they are closing their eyes, which means they are making themselves vulnerable to their environment by not using their "haws" but with their eyelids that obstruct their vision.
    Also boop that nose!
    Update: Also if your cats tail looks like a question mark. "?" they are in a good mood. Tail straight, but relaxed with a cute little curl at the end. I say a question mark because their tail is the question part and their anus would be the dot. Now you can't unsee it..... Sorry. 😂 😂
    Also, when whiskers are relaxed and pushed forward with a curl outward (away from the face) you haz a happy kitty 😺 if you have whiskers straight along the face, you haz mean kitty. 🙁

      Actually, if you move your hands from petting a spot they're fine with over to their stomach, they'll be fine with you rubbing their stomach. They might curl up a bit in an agressive way, but it's just instinct. They won't try to attack you so long as you don't make the move quick and suddenly. Cats like to have their stomachs rubbed gently, but they also like to play violently. If the cat claws at your hand a bit, they're just playing. If the cat claws at your arm/face and hisses, they're angry.

    Lvl2, friends: If they let you in to scratch them, make sure you give a good scratch under the chin and down the front side of the neck. That's how I was told that cattle makes friends with eatch other. They also love a good scratch on the forehead.

    If a parrot is bowing its head and acting like it wants you to scratch its head be wary, if they've got an eye on you they will whip up and bite you if you get close enough. My African Grey does this to everyone who isn't me because he likes when they freak out and yet people still don't believe me when I tell them he doesn't actually want to be pet. They're too smart for their own good and will use peoples lack of understanding their body language to their advantage. Just never try to touch a parrot in general, touching them anywhere but the head is extremely sexual to the bird and never try to touch their head unless you are familiar with that particular bird. I say this as someone who works with a lot of parrots, body language queues are so subtle so a bird owners okay will not guarantee you won't get bit. Also cockatoos are notorious for dive bombing even when they seem chill. Just avoid parrots honestly 😅

    The best way to get them friendly is to feed them, more specifically, sit down with food and let them come over and eat it from your hands. Teach them that a specific noise means food is here.
    Beware, very friendly chickens will follow you around, so you must be extra careful where you place your feet.

They’re very curious creatures and will investigate everything you do if they trust you. I also have a very clear favorite as she’s the chicken I feed by hand and pick up every time I go out. She gets so jealous if I hold any other chicken that she tries to attack them when they’re placed back on the ground and then she will sit near me when the offender is gone. 10/10 love having chickens, quality entertainment for the backyard.

    • @hircine9919
      @hircine9919 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The nose is more sensitive due to it containing nerves to detect vibration in the water to locate potential prey, also the eyes have eyelids which will cover the eyes from damage, the gills are big and likely not a good idea to stick your hand in it in the first place. Also your chance of getting attacked by a shark barely exists so don't even worry.

      As somebody who interacts with sharks on a regular basis, do NOT do this. I am a shark diver, and let me tell you. Sharks (especially tiger sharks), will not give you an opportunity to do that. If a shark is aggressive and is charging at you, you should watch their eyes. They have eyelids that close when they open their mouths. Normally they try to attack from under you (if you're scuba diving, you have to stay at their level or below them). Once they open their mouth, grab or kick their nose and push them DOWN. They cannot move backward, so pushing them down will just make them go under/around you.

    More chicken tips.
    1. Never run after them unless you know you can catch them (which is hard). Sudden motion spooks them. Approach calmly, preferably from the side, even when you're reaching down to grab them.
    2. When you grab a chicken, do so from the side or behind with a hand on either side. Press down firmly on the wings and keep them on the ground for a few seconds. This stops them from struggling after picking them up.
    3. In my experience once you've picked it up once like I recommended in 1 and 2, if you put it back down, it's easier to pick it up again. This is because to the chicken, nothing bad happened after you picked it up so it's safe.
    4. If you meet a free range or wild chicken and it puffs up its feathers, it's trying to intimidate you (they do this to each other too). Hens do that to guard chicks or nests. Cockrels/Roosters do that when there is a hen in oestrus nearby although they'll typically ignore you been while puffed up. Always remain upright when dealing with an angry chicken. NEVER bend or squat or kneel. They'll try to peck your eyes out. Standing makes it harder for them to fly to your face and therefore easier to knock them out of the air.
    5. Water is your best friend. Chickens are not like ducks and do not have waterproof feathers. Drench aggressive chickens in water and they'll typically leave you alone. If they are still mad then all then can do is run and not try to fly up to your face because their wings are soaked and useless.
    Turkey tips
    1. if a turkey charges you, don't run. Stand your ground or charge back. It will chase you otherwise. (May not work with wild turkeys)
    2. Wild turkeys have claws on their back foot that are long and sharp as hell. Do not tussle with them. They will make you bleed or kill you if they manage to hit your jugular. You don't want to be the person who got killed by a fucking turkey.

      I don't have the slightest idea how to narrow it down, so just take this general advice:
      If you're not in a dangerous situation, try to be as passive as possible. Don't press a dog to the ground, don't put a rabbit on its back. Test different places to scratch if the animal likes you and find out what it likes the most. Only pet animals that come to you, they probably won't bite you. And you should probably also do that slowly.
      If you're in a dangerous situation like a stray dog attacking you, also try to be passive. Just go away. But if that's not an option, I've heard that screaming at them and being loud is a good idea. You don't have to be actually stronger than the animal to win the standoff, you just have to *seem* stronger. I heard it even works on bears and elephants. But I guess it's a last resort, only use it when an attack is inevitable, you don't want to fight a dog.
      Also, I'm not an expert, just the average knowledge I got from my parents and a little TV aswell as having animals myself.

    Birds and Bugs tips:
    If you want wild birds to trust you more stay still, move very slowly and don't make loud noises. If they see you in the same spot a lot they'll get used to you and will approach you with more confidence. I used to sit in trees all day with birds feeding on the flowers while sitting on the branch next to me.
    With birds like fantails, that are flying behind you as you walk, take more frequent steps, as this kicks up more of the bugs that they are eating, and they'll keep flying behind you. Careful not to kick or stand on them though.
    If you want to hold a bug for a long time, when you grab it use both your hands and cut off all light getting to it, but do not squash it. Hold it in the dark until it stops moving, then you can take away one hand and it will stay in the other. Idk why this calms them down but it does, and if you do it right they can stay there for over an hour. My friends and I used to use this trick to put crickets and cicadas in classrooms of teachers we didn't like, and watch them get driven crazy by the noise the bug would make when released.
    Do not approach geese, but let them approach you. If you want to get away from them, do it slowly, never ever try to run. If you don't seem annoying or like a threat geese can actually be quite friendly, and you can hand feed them.
    Most spiders won't bite you unless they're scared. If you see one on you, do not run and scream, stay still and calm. Then use your fingers to flick it off of you (flicking is usually too quick for the spider to react to) if you don't feel comfortable enough to pick it up and carry it somewhere else.
    If you're having a stare down with a large dragonfly it probably just sees it's reflection in your glasses. The amount of times this has happened to people I know is just ridiculous. Take off your glasses and it will leave.
    Bees are very nice and usually don't try sting you at all. If it lands on you just gently shoo it away. If it's just sitting there and not really doing anything you can high five it as it will raise it's leg in defence and it makes for the perfect tiny high five. Don't do this too much though, because you will annoy it and it might sting you.
    Cockroaches don't really do much and you can just pick them up and feed them to chickens, or throw them outside. There is no reason to be scared.
    Bugs tend to climb up, so if you're moving one somewhere else, hold your hand up and it should stay put. If not it's just being an asshole.
    If you fill your pants with ants it's actually less noticeable than people think. So long as they aren't aggressive ants, nothing much other than a little tickling will happen. Don't ask me how I know this.

It can sometimes take twenty seconds for it to bow back. If it does, approach cautiously and you can pat it on the head. Try not to blink too much, they don't trust easily and find blinking something worthy of mistrust.

    I kept waiting to hear certain things but I never did... so here goes! Would you like to make cats love you??? Well then here's a tip or two I've figured out after having and loving cats for my whole life :)
    I could go on for hours about cats and all the cool things that they do, but for brevitys sake I'll pare it down to just the things that directly help you establish relationships with cats. It's becoming a little more well known what cats body language is, but if you haven't seen a video or something on that yet, we'll recap some of the basics. If you already kinda know this stuff then skip it I guess.
    Tail : Straight up - friendly, interested. Downwards and waving - annoyed or scared, do not touch them.
    Purring : Either happy and relaxed, or stressed and trying to comfort itself.
    Winks and long slow blinks : I love you or I trust you!
    Flops on back exposing belly : In most cases DO NOT touch the belly! They are not like dogs, they usually are not asking you to pet it. They are showing you their most vulnerable parts as a sign of deep trust. Immediately touching it will annoy most cats and possibly cause them to reconsider trusting you. (The odd cat will very much enjoy belly rubs but only try this if you have known the cat for some time.)
    Arched back : Do I need to say this one?? They're angry or threatened
    Rubbing against you : They are claiming you as their own. You are a part of their pack now :)
    I might add more of those of I think of more but moving on... Something about cats that trips a lot of people up is that you cannot treat them like dogs and expect them to like it, in most cases. If you only have experience with dogs, throw it all out and start all over.
    And now what I consider the most important thing to know about cats... They demand respect. Many people view cats as very arrogant creatures, and perhaps there is a little truth to that, but in all reality, most people wouldn't put up with the kind of treatment that pets do, and cats are one of those animals that don't have time for your shit. I respect that about cats and honestly I relate to them quite a lot on this next point.
    DO NOT hold them if they don't want you to. They will hate you. If you want a cat to learn to love you and trust you, always put them down or let them leave the second they want to. Start slow, once you're friendly with them, pick them up for a second and pet them, but they will most likely immediately want to leave. Pet them for a second or so and put them down gently. Continue doing this regularly until they start to stay longer and longer. Eventually they will love to be around you and be held by you, because they feel safe and because they know they can leave at any time they please. It makes sense to me, people are the same. Doesn't everyone avoid the person at work that just won't shut up and it's a struggle to get away from them if you so much as say hello?? Yeah. Cats just want you to respect their free agency.
    TL;DR ^^^ Just read the last paragraph, it's the most important :)

      the arched back , let me add to it : angry, threatened or "to threaten", cause it gives them "height" they will often do this to seem bigger to the threat and thus threaten it back
      my cat and i also use this to play. i guess. he archs, i arch , he runs, i run, we both hide and wait, repeat until tired

      This is good, most people don't think cats are smart enough to understand respect, but yeah - as long as you don't try to make a cat do anything it doesn't want to do, it will love you.
      But the video suggested cats don't like eye contact; in my experience, cats are opposite from dogs on that and love eye contact in any form. This is evidenced by their 'winks and slow blinks' - long, maintained eye contact. And from what I've read, the long slow blinks/winks are basically the cat's way of displaying trust, because it's willing to close its eyes around you (not normal for hunter animals like that)
      Anyway, a couple of other fun tricks to get a cat to like you -
      -Do those long slow blinks at it. They do seem to notice
      -If you really *have* to make the cat do something it doesn't want to do, like going in/out and you're in a hurry, if possible, gently push it with a foot instead of picking it up. Cats can become afraid of hands if you're not careful, but a cat that's afraid of feet is ... well, convenient, tbh. And as long as you're gentle about it, they won't be afraid, but will promptly move where you want them to when you start involving your feet. I feel like they kind of eventually recognize that if you're using your feet, they really should listen or you're just going to pick them up anyway
      -Cat Glands. You know how a cat rubs its face on things that it likes? That's because there are scent glands just above their eyebrows, toward their ears (there is usually a small patch of thin fur here to mark the spot). When a cat's in a good mood, it likes to rub these all over everything - but not necessarily because they know they're spreading their scent, it seems like they just enjoy it. Which is what I'm getting at - rub a cat on these glands, right around their temples. This is why cats seem to like having their faces pet, because you brush these glands, but if you just rub them straight up, they usually love it. Obviously, the cat needs to trust you enough to even let you pet its face first, though, and some cats can get a little weirded out the first few times
      -Just above the tail. This works on both cats and dogs, but mostly just females, and... well, it's a little disturbing. On their lower back, just above the tail, dogs and cats are both very sensitive and really love being pet there. This is mostly on females, so ... if you think about it, and imagine your animals humping, you'll understand why they like this.

    I agree with the “don’t mess with birds” one. I go to a bird store every Saturday and help the woman who owns it. She has been around birds for 70 years since she was 5 years old and had a chicken. Macaws, cockatoos, ringnecks, conures, cockatiels, lovebirds, parrotlets, budgies, and finches. The worst bite she says she’s ever gotten was from a canary.

    This guy is just spewing out random things he saw on the Dog Whisperer. Most of this is based in truth and then just warped with weird myths.
    You shouldn't have to WWE-style pin a dog down to make it obey you, if you have to do that you've done a very bad job of raising your dog in the first place.
    Dogs 100% understand what a swat on the nose means. To say they don't is nonsense, a smack is not abuse.
    This dude can't even train his ankle-biters not to be aggressive towards guests.
    If you ever find yourself flipping a Chihuahua over and showing teeth, you don't know what you're doing...I'm sorry for you to have to find out like this.
    Also, "Alpha" and "Pack mentality" really only gets you so far with domesticated dogs; a dog doesn't suddenly think it runs the house if it gets food before you sit down to eat.
    I hate when I see false information like this because it makes people think there are quick tricks to understanding all dogs.
    Here is an *ACTUAL* tip that applies to all animals:
    Treat animals how they deserve to be treated; don't do things to them that they don't like just because you like doing them; ie. lifting a cat that doesn't enjoy being held.
    Just watch an animal that you'd like to befriend for a little while and you'll see what they'd typically like to see in a human friend.
    Animals EXUDE personality, y'all just can't vibe.
    "Don't mess with birds." I know this is intended probably a bit more jokingly, but this honestly the level of incompetence I'm getting off this guy.

      Yup that dog thing is really stupid. But i kind of have to force my dog to sit if he starts barking at guests or strangers. If he pulls a lot then i make him sit in the same spot for few minutes until he is calm. Also we always give food to our dog first and then eat our lunch/dinner just so he doesn't come begging for food making a sad puppy eyes.

    • @fifthmystery

      Dogs also understand tone etc
      So if you are angry and shouting at them they know what they did and act guilty.
      Downside if this is you can literally curse out your dog in the sweetest tone and they'll think your praising them.
