  • This video covers a bit of the flying fun during the June 11, 2023 Spring Fling free flight model airplane contest held by the Glastonbury Modelers/Pinkham Field Irregulars Flying Aces club at the Durham Fairgrounds, Durham, CT. It was a great day for free flight with the winds starting out light, but eventually hitting double digits by the afternoon. A bit of humidity in the air. Several models were lost, and a couple retrieved. Lots of great flying with some significantly long flights. A fun day.

    I was amazed to0 see how well the low wing BeeGee(first model) was flying to the right with what appeared to be low dihedral. this was followed by a few other low wing models flying to the right as well. Some very well trimmed models in that group. Thanks for the interesting video John.

    Looks like a LOT of fun! GREAT airplanes! QED Racer and Gee Bee D are two of my favorites! The Brown and others were VERY nice too! Hope Vance got his plane fixed up after tangling with that tree!

      Thanks Lindsay. It was a fun day! The yellow model is the Dare Piper Clipper by Bill Schmidt. It's a great flyer. mine is a few grams heavier than some as I applied a coat of floral paint. Still, a consistent flyer.

      Thank you. The field is actually a bird sanctuary. That 's why the meadow is kept with long grass. Several interesting varieties of birds.

    I guess the Italian float plane with no ailerons was probably fitted with wing warping, many aircraft were during the early days of flying.

      Yes, pretty sure that's the case with that aircraft. Thanks for watching!

    Hi, John! Did your friend say Brown P-1 for his airplane? Where did he get the plans? That was an interesting gathering of flight! Any flight over 25 seconds is a good flight in my book.

    Just found this site and really good to see rubber powered flight. Does anyone use balsa props today. Back in the day my dad could carve a beautiful prop for his as that was all that was available. Very very light weight and flew a long time and if they caught a wind or thermal, they didn't want to come down.

      Hi Lee. Thanks for watching. Yes, many still carve their own balsa props. Certainly, an artform in the hobby so your dad must have been a talented modeler. Several of my project videos use a balsa prop.

      He also said they would lube the rubbers with castor oil. I that still around?

    • @Watchingthevideos99
      @Watchingthevideos99  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Lee, the common lube for rubber motors now is silicone grease. Very slippery and it doesn't splatter like other lubricants.

    the plane controls itself ? you set the flaps ?

      Bill yes, free flight models. Rubber powered built to fly on their own. The purest form of model aviation.
