    Thin is better for this type of knife. This blade is specifically designed for skinning game.. a thinner knife means a sharper edge

    Old Timer USA knives were carbon steel. Later USA Old Timers were mostly stainless & have the "Schrade +" stamped on the tang. The China stuff is definitely stainless. The OT stands for Old Timer.

    My very 1st152 is early middle 70s - Black. It's been all over the planet. It's NEVER sparkled, it's NEVER shone.
    It's always been either rusty or Black! I don't remember exactly how much I paid for it, probably around $20 but I do remember I had to mow 5 lawns that Saturday to afford it! So I was likely 12 or 13 - and I DO recall that I had enough left over to go see that cute girl at the ice cream shop and spend the remainder on a $1.10 Ice cream Sunday! When she was simply NOT impressed with my new knife - For some reason, I instantly lost all interest in her and never went back!
    I Still have that ancient 152 in my Fixed Blades Duffle Bag. Yes, NOW, I have so many Fixed blades that I actually use a heavy Canvas Black Duffle sized "Range" Bag to store my "Collection"...
    I Just got a pair of the new Longer 152 OTL 8.6" ones - at last a Sharpfinger that fits my 6'2" Manpaws!

    Thanks again for sending me this video of yours man!! Goodness I wonder how many models there actually are. I notice some people saying the newer china made one says 440 steel, others say(and was the case with my buddy Ryans I shown) the 7cr17mov steel!! Then some come with a leather sheath and others nylon lol. I now noticed, thanks to another youtuber, that there is also different colored handle slab versions as well!! Enough to confuse me lol. I wouldnt mind getting the USA made one either in time. I'm really starting to like this brand now that I handled a few of my buddies. Just got done cleaning up my 152 that i got in 78' or 79' it was my first trapping knife. Its very used. Probably sat rusted for the last 20 years in its sheath in a box. The snap strap on the sheath was broke so i made a new strap with a leather shoe lace. Ive polished it up now and although pitted looks great. They high polish i did looks pretty neat with shiny pits lol. Had yo re-bevel it. Gave it a 17° edge on each side and raised a bur. Im going to skin my next few beavers with it just for nostalgias sake, and hey what good is a knife If you dont use it.

      @@drivesideways6550 Neither one, friend. It's the sheath that came with it and gravity holds the knife in place. The end of the handle and the top of the belt loop are equal with 1 3/4" of the handle exposed with the knife sheathed. A fine knife.

  • @knokname6466

    Bought mine in the mid-70s. It's in great shape, but does have rust in places due to being carried in the fishing pack. Biggest disappointment about it was the sheath-- didn't last long at all before the knife point wore through the bottom, the rivets popped loose and the retention strap-- which went over the blade heel rather than the handle-- never did hold the knife very securely. Kind of odd that, at the time, one of OTs sales lines was, "If you lose this knife, we'll replace it free". Dang, I couldn't lose that knife and even get a free sheath, and never have felt the need to order a new one. Now it'd be made in China so there's even less sentiment to get one now.

    I just purchased one on etsy and looked at the stamp marks. One side says SCHRADE in a straight line and the other says 152OT but no "China". Is there any way to tell how old the knife is?

      Thank for watching! Without seeing the knife it's hard to make an educated guess. I have noticed some of the newer knives that I know are made in China, that do not have "China" stamped on and don't have "made in the USA" stamped on either. Unless it says made in the USA, I would probably guess that it is made in China. The newer ones use some type of stainless steel like 440, whereas the older ones have thicker steel, and use carbon steel. You may have a knife that was made in the 90's. • @KnifeDetector
      @KnifeDetector  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I’m if it doesn’t have any rust or carbon build up, Flitz would work fine. If it has some major carbon build up, I would do some polishing with some 2000 grit sand paper, then wipe it down, then Flitz. I usually start off with soap and water, then some WD40 to get any light rust off, before I do any of that though.

    I have a couple of Sharpfingers with the USA tang stamp that I ran out and bought when I heard that Schrade (the New York based 'real' Schrade) had gone out of business in the early 1990s. I also have one or two of the Taylor Brands version. I have not purchased any since the group that is part of/owns or whatever Smith and Wesson bought out Taylor Brands. I can say that the leather sheath(s) for the Taylor Brands versions look just about like the ones that came with the 'real' Schrades - meaning that they are pretty good quality and fairly thick for the price. The factory leather sheath you show in this video definitely looks flimsy and cheap in comparison. I guess BTI tools is cutting corners all over the place. It is a shame that Taylor Brands sold out because when they first started selling their versions of Schrade branded knives they were pretty much junk but for a few years before they sold out they had begun (re)building a pretty solid reputation for Schrade. From what I have heard, however, the BTI versions have backslid on much of that progress and the knives are mostly junk, again - even the ones that Taylor Brands was already having made in China. Maybe in ten years or so they will become decent quality knives again.
