You’re right about people getting weird when you have a fixed blade knife. I had a small skinner, my going out knife, on me at a new church that I was hoping to start attending. I bent over to let my son walk in the foyer of the church and next thing I know the security guard came up to me and said my knife was scaring people! That made me feel horrible. Especially since most of the men had their knives clearly showing to be seen. Mine was nice and neat under my shirt and I was the one called out for it. I never went back to that church.

Because of 9-11 & recent school shootings people in soft targets are on edge,so understand the fear, but disagree with that approach,if you're a law abbing citizen then no 1 should freak out,but be grateful for the added protection if needed 🙏🇺🇸

I have been edcing a fixed blade as my primary knife for over 10yrs now and everything you stated is spot on with my experience, but the biggest thing I feel with fixed blades is the value you get with them. Generally speaking a 125-170 dollar fixed blade will give you significantly more knife than a folder in the same range.

      @razgrizbird4562 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +10

Let's also not forget that, for true budget, $30 for a fixed blade gets a heck of a lot more than $30 in a folder. With possibly the exception of the Ontario RAT 2 D2.

You are spot on with the value. I have in my EDC rotation several fixed blades from Civivi and Sencut. All are sub $100 and have amazing quality. With prices today, you would be lucky to find anything usable in a similar price range.

    • @jerseyjoe1677
      @jerseyjoe1677 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

@@Pyro8285 I’ll do you one better up until two years ago. I carried Knives religiously and collected them. I have thousands of dollars invested in knives. I’m a union pipe fitter so I was sharpening my Kershaw leek. And then a guy showed me his five dollar folding utility knife from Home Depot and it just made so much sense. Hear me out what I mean is for every utility blade you use there’s two sides so you always have a sharp knife on you you never have to sharpen it and the blades or dirt dirt cheap and if you lose it, who cares if you’re opening boxes all day just use a simple box cutter. Yes Knives they look so cool. They’re cool to play with and everything but at the end of the day, I said you always have to sharpen them and they’re extremely expensive for opening a box . So now I carry a nice anodize folding utility knife and I always have a sharp blade, literally a razor sharp blade. now I get it you can’t baton with a utility knife. You can’t do a lot of things with a utility knife. But for general every day use but utility knife is the way to go, and this is coming from somebody that was obsessed literally obsessed with pocket knives and fix blade knives.

I went edc fixie back around 2007 after almost losing an inch of my index finger to a Cold Steel xl Vaquerro that accidently guillotined closed. Once you get used to fixies there's no going back. By far the most comfortable has been the Creely Mako, not just the handle but the sheath. Take a look at their deep carry leather sheath with the ulticlip, they've been using this design for years. It is so comfortable that you don't even know its there and it is so easy to draw and resheath. Didn't think I'd like it, had a kydex sheath made for the Mako but after trying the leather sheath I'm looking to have similar sheaths made for my other small fixies.

I've gone down this "EDC" rabbit hole lately. and holy cow I had no idea this was a topic of such long detailed discussion and complicated pros and cons, etc. It blows my mind how this "culture" exists with so many people and subscribers. Every video is basically an ad. blows my mind. I have some box cutters around the house I bought in like a 10 pack for $8. They all work excellently and I have them all over the house. I have an ancient pocket knife in my fishing box that works fine. I have kitchen knives if that counts. I never once said to myself, "Damn, If id only been carrying a fixed blade knife or any other complicated expensive knife."

I went from folders to fixed blades and now I'm back to OTF's and simple folders like my Sebenzas. The Sebenza really broke my knife obsession pretty well. I got to where I just carry a Sebenza and nothing else because it can do everything I used to feel like i needed more task specific knives. I do carry a Sebenza or Bugout and an OTF because I don't like cutting food with an OTF but otherwise, I don't carry a fixed blade regularly anymore, except in the woods.

Hey Taylor, really-really good comprehensive video done here. I've been a fan of your videos for years. Most folks who have been around me know that I've been carrying both fixed blades and folders for at least twenty years (and really much much longer than that if I'm being honest). You made many excellent points in your wonderful, well thought out video, young sir, and I absolutely agree with the many excellent points you've made in this video. Blades are really a very functional tool that can be used in seemingly endless ways to help in various tasks, and this is one reason that I have carried at least one Bark River knife for bushcrafting, and other types of blades for Kali and Silat work for many-many... many years now. I guess that at this point, I've pretty much got my little system dialed in right where I want it. Please keep up the wonderfully comprehensive work that you do in your videos, and may you and your family always be well young sir. 🫡

so I use my knife many times a day, back when I primarily carried a folder i would wear out the pivot or break the blade every 10 to 15 months, black Friday 2021, the Gerber tri tip and the utilclip were both on sale on amazon, and I'm still carrying that in my right front pocket. the paint has worn off the clip, and the knife handle has some dents from where I've used it as a hammer, but it still works fantastically.

I’ve been trying trying for several years to find the perfect sized fix blade that works best for me and I have tried multiple different blades from carrying them on my waist to buying the kite sheets from the leather to you know just different things. The big idea, designs look out, has been the one that all accounts for me personally perfect I thought it first. It might be a little too small but the sheath drops in pocket well the pocket clip while very different does what it’s supposed to do and I’ve been a hard-core folder guy for quite some time now like I said I’ve been looking for a really long time for a good fix blade that I could you know drop in pocket and with the lookout. I think it’s pretty much perfect and that’s what I’m going with. I’m gonna try a couple more that I’ve seen but for the most part I’m definitely loving it, look out for me thanks appreciate all the info and all the different aspects of Knife and EDC that you bring to the table. I love the fact that you have so many different ideas of content that really takes you and your channel outside of the box versus other channels that I see I love that it’s still EDC and it’s still Knife related but you really do tap on a lot of different things and that is what for me makes you very different and always makes your content interesting for me. I never get bored with it and for that I’m truly grateful wishing you peace, positivity, prosperity, and progression.

It gets in the way when I sit down and can't carry it with shorts. But I carry a Lionsteel H1 or H2. The sheath is absolutely the best leather sheath for EDC carry. I have actually got a new to me Gerber Strongarm fixed blade knife. And whenever I’m out camping or in our woods, it comes with me for protection. Because here in East Tennessee we have coyotes, bobcats, and sometimes bears. Whenever I ever go anywhere in the woods, I always have my phone on me in case something happens so that way I can get ahold of someone and they can help. I also have a few folding knives, but I also have a fixed blade knife forged out of a railroad spike when I got my first class rank in Boy Scouts. The First class rank is halfway to Eagle Rank, and the First class rank symbolizes that you can handle a folding knife, axe, hand saw and a hatchet safely, and so my last scoutmaster had made me the fixed blade knife.

I’ll have watch many of your videos to agree with your claim of ease of deployment. All of my fixed blades are in Kydex sheaths and they are very difficult to remove from the sheath with one hand. Typically the sheath wants to come out with the knife. So I have to use a finger to hold down the sheath and it’s makes it easier to cut that finger on deployment.
Then the hole trying to put back in sheath without missing the sheath and damaging my pants or in worse case cutting my leg. I can pull a folder and deploy as it’s coming out of my pocket and ready to use. One handed operation is much easier and safer.
I can also get a lot more blade in the same or even smaller footprint in my pocket. I can’t wear a fixed blade on a knife as it would be a problem to be displaying a knife in the office and lab.
I basically have to dedicate a whole pocket to the fixed blade.

Well put argument. I like my Brisa Necker a lot, quite small but works excellent even for my 9-10 sized hands. The leather sheath sucks so prepare to wetform it yourself or get the Kydex. The Real Steel CVX80 is the only knife knife I actually own twice because I like it so much. And my Lionsteel M4 is not a small knife but finds its way into my pocket on a regular basis. PLEASE NOTE THAT IN CALIFORNIA IF YOU CARRY A FIXED BLADE KNIFE IT MUST BE OPENLY CARRIED IN A SHEATH THAT IS SUSPENDED FROM YOUR WAIST.
Putting it in your pocket like in the video or covering it with a shirt while on a belt would be considered concealed carry and is illegal.
Also it must be suspended from the waist so necklace knives are also illegal.

Found that funny, in Spain is the opposite. If you open carry a knife ( do not matter what type of knife or if you are in the fields, mountains ) that would cost you a ticket and your knife would be retired to police department but if you carry it in your pocket and the knife has not over 4´3 inches of blade, there is no problem.
So in Spain you always should concealed carry for "safety" or at least to carrying it legally.
      Have a good day

I have only one tiny edc fixed blade, the benchmade hidden canyon hunter s90v, I like it a lot, but I have to admit it takes a lot of space in the pocket and impair my mobility much more than a 4 inches folder, and weight more with the sheath. Plus, I like to fidget a lot with my knives. However, your video gave me the desire to try to edc it more. I have made some little fixed blades with 1075 but now I have to make sheaths so I can try to carry them outside of my shop lol.

The Gerber Basic Knife is a good size/weight to edc and the sheath has a pocket clip. I carry it handle down (pocket clip at tip of balde) I do that simply to make the entire knife concealed. Since its not my primary self defense the slightly slower deployment isn't an issue.

So @taylor I had a video idea and I’ve been watching for a while but I’m not sure you’ve done one of these yet. For urban/office EDCers there are a number of us who work jobs where knives are forbidden (court lawyers, Behavioral health/medical providers in hospitals, etc.) so what would be your favorite alternative tools (multi or other) for cutting and other relevant activities we would use a knife for when we’re not at work or visiting a public space with security check points?

Well, I’m definitely on the fence about which one of these approaches I want to take. I’ve been carrying a foldable utility knife (for lack of a better description) for a while and was looking to get into the actual knife with a blade on it but now I’m not sure if I want a folder or a fixed blade…😂 and I’m in North Carolina🤔

my edc is a small 3 blade pen knife and a surge Leatherman. Never needed to baton anything in the city. Pen knives are great for cleaning your fingernails and small tasks like removing small screws, removing slivers, and stickers off of fruit without people freaking out. Most think I'm using my fingernails to do the task. When in the woods I have fix bladed knives and a pen knife.

I'm not intending to argue. The ease for the majority of people is still going to be a folder. People, for some reason, are more comfortable with concealed carry regardless of what tool/weapon it is. What I particularly do is when in uniform, I carry a minimal folder because govt building limit my options, and a full sided knife otherwise, winter is when I carry a fixed blade for the utility while traveling in general.

Pairing a medium fixed blade for “real” work with a light duty folder works well for me. For most edc tasks my SAK tinker or Benchmade proper is more than enough and they don’t make “non-knife” ppl uncomfortable, I wouldn’t trust either of them for hard use though. I prefer not having an exposed pocket clip also because I’ve gotten the “look” for that too, what I edc is nobody’s business but mine(especially if your a gear snob/junkie lol, some days between a watch, 2 knives, flashlight, and a prybar I’d have around $1k worth of gear on me…not advertising your valuables to strangers seems like a good practice even though show and tell is fun lol).

I carry a fixed blade "the Boker Nesmi Pro" daily for work, for the same reasons you mentioned about cleaning and nothing getting in the pivot because there isn't one. I used to carry a folder but I had to clean it every week, sometimes daily. That's why a fixee blade makes sense, but for EDC outside of work I carry a folder usually unless I want a fixed blade and I'm wearing pants and not shorts.

Hey Taylor! Im in Central NC. Would love to meet you in person one day. Just as a heads up brother, in NC it is 100% illegal to conceal carry a fixed blade period. That includes pocket carrying. Folding knives can be concealed carried but must be less than 4.5 inches when closed. S. 14-269
NC defines concealed carrying as any weapon that is covered or hidden by or within clothing. Good luck to you out there.

Concealed is defined by intent. Do you intend to conceal? A pocket clip and the knife sticking out of a pocket is not concealed. If it’s covered by your shirt, it definitely is. But there is precedence that notes pocket clips do not show intent to conceal. My fixed blades always stick out of my pocket and aren’t covered by my shirt.

It is understandable the advantages offered by a fixed blade knife vs any folder but when a folder is called for places in which concealment is called without sacrificing blade length I rely on my cold steel spartan (for places in which a less than five inches of blade are allowed) and my cold steel ti lite XL for places that permit more blade length 😎🤙

But when I need a good sharp edge once a month maybe I sure am prepared 😂! Oh and I drive a semi all over the USA so it’s a secondary tool to help keep my heart beating if needed that’s always there. Carrying a fixie 24/7 means you don’t really have to consciously think about reaching for it. Muscle memory takes over.

Just to push back a little against the assertion that folders can only be carried in pockets. I've been a belt-carry person for many years, and currently have a Jack Wolf Laid-Back Jack in the extra slot of the Leatherman Arc's belt case, along with a Case Seahorse whittler (I carve a lot of wood; it's a great knife if you sharpen away Case's factory edge) in a belt case I got on Etsy. Generally, variations of the original Leatherman belt case are great for traditional slipjoints. I've EDCed fixed blades off and on over years, and I do so a lot less now because I the public reactions you address-and I'm also in North Carolina.

Like with shooting, what works the best for the person is the one to use. I have both and it depends on what I'm doing, will dictate what knife I carry. Not everyone wears tactical pants, I wear Wranglers that are 5 pockets, so a good folder works better for me, everyone is different.
I do appreciate the video and ideas of different fixed blades. For me, a folder is much easier, faster to deploy and retract and put away. Again, to each their own.

In the late '90s I EDC'd a dive knife strapped to my leg until I got the The Ontario Mark III Navy Blade for scout carry (with a modification I made to the original shealth that would allow me to do so) and at least two boxcutters (preferably the ones with break off blades).
Switched to a Folding Utility knife for EDC in 2000 until I got my Beretta 101B knife.
It has been all I daily carried until I recently got the SpyderCo Shaman as a spare folder and the CountyComm R4A Fixed Blade for more robust use (if neeeded).
Fixed blades are tied for folders for me when I get the Beckwith Covert knife I'm switching back to a fixed blade for my daily carry.

Fixed has its advantages on hygiene and sharpening. You can clean and dry it entirely and quickly. You can sharpen the blade entirely.
Folder has its advantage on size. You can carry it easily within a pocket.
I don't think the stability of structure is an issue for a folding knife, or it could be an insult to some brands.
For EDC knives, the edge retention is far more critical than toughness. M390, S35VN, Elmax, CruWear, MagnaCut, CPM154, 3V, N690, VG10, D2 could be taken into consideration as knife steels, depending on your budget.
