Heart Palpitations ARE a Stomach Issue

  • If you have acid reflux or GERD and also suffer from heart palpitations, this data is for you.
Back in the early 1900s, Ludwig von Roemheld coined the Roemheld Syndrome where he described a cluster of cardiovascular symptoms (think heart palpitations, tachycardia, dizziness, vertigo and elevated blood pressure) that were stimulated by gastrointestinal (gut) changes. The gut symptoms included gas, bloating, constipation, hiatal hernia and more.
Roemheld explained how gut imbalance compresses the vagus nerve (your longest cranial nerve) slowing your heart. The slowed heart then stimulates the "fight or flight" part of your nervous system in order to prevent your heart rate from diminishing too much. The result is heart palpitations, sometimes elevated blood pressure and/or tachycardia.
The patient's heart is fine. You may have experienced this after an ER visit where you have worried you were having a heart attack. But the heart is not diseased.
It is worth noting that Roemheld lived in the early 1900s and today his Syndrome is considered obsolete, which is why your doctors give no credence to the association between gut imbalance and heart symptoms.
Even more annoying is the direction to doctors stating that once the heart tests normal, the next step for the patient is a psych evaluation. If you've ever been told it's "all in your head", you now know why.

Interesting. I have a heart condition with daily palps. I found that certain foods can trigger the palpitations, the hard to digest food, which I avoid and I don't over eat. The stomach is a large muscle which requires a lot of blood flow for digestion which takes blood flow from the heart = heart works harder. I don't believe palps are stomach related alone, as certain cardiac conditions such as HCM/HCOM can/will cause palpitations.

I went to a cardiologist fifteen years ago convinced I had a serious arrhythmia. After wearing a holter monitor for several days, the cardiologist determined that I had "frequent non complex pvcs and rare PACs" but that they did not,"except by random coincidence" align with the points where I indicated I was feeling palpitations by pressing the button on the Holter (this meant that a not insignificant portion of the 'heart flutters' and 'skipped beats' I was feeling were not even coming from my heart). He told me everyone had the ectopic beats and it was harmless, but he didn't offer a suggestion for why I was feeling this sensation that didn't line up with my PVCs and PACs.
I didn't believe him and spent fourteen more years miserable, stressed and anxious. Last year, I started getting heart burn daily that I could no longer ignore..I changed my diet completely to a very bland diet full of only foods that I know are well tolerated for me. My palpitations nearly completely disappeared after two decades with them (PMS week is still hit or miss). If I go off my eating plan for more than a day or two now, the palpitations come right back. This is why the Holter monitor results didn't make any sense to me, my symptoms were not necessarily cardiac in nature (or, more accurately, not of pathologic cardiac origin) even though I was really convinced they were.
I can't believe this is not more mainstream given how many people it affects.
Interestingly, I only just recently remembered that I first began experiencing this when I was 16. It'd send me into a panic attack, and my grandmother would always tell me to calm down because I "just needed to move my bowels." As a teenager, I always thought she was just being gross... It turns out that Her experience and wisdom was so much more valuable than I could've appreciated at the time. ❤
An OTC simethicone/Gas-X in situations where you want them to stop pretty quick while waiting to change your diet will do wonders as well.

Yes!! I've had hormonal PVCs for over 10 years. My hormones got so out of whack 6 months ago it sent me to the ER with A-Flutter and A-Fib. For 3 months I'd have the same symptoms at exactly the same time of the month. I told my doctors this and they looked at me like I was nuts. I had the menstrual cycle & HRV charts to prove it and they wouldn't even entertain the idea. Instead they prescribed meds, told me I'd have to have a loop recorder implant to monitor my heart long term, educated me on ablation and the Watchman device. Long story short, it's 6 months & several tests and procedures later and my heart is completely healthy. The cardiologist said I "fooled them". I was like, remember the conversation we had and I told you it was hormonal?? Thank God I knew my body well and educated myself, otherwise I may have been sent for unnecessary surgeries on a perfectly healthy heart. That's horrifying to think about.

Change your diet to low fat. Don't eat any late meals and most importantly don't OVER eat.
      Keep your meals small.
And exercise. Something low impact that won't aggravate your hiatal hernia.
This may sound counter intuitive to your problem but cayenne pepper is known to heal the soft tissue in the esophagus. Find a way to incorporate it into your meals.
      It will help.
It's over eating and late eating that causes this.

You just explained exactly what I was going through. I had neuropathy and also gastroparsis, basically damage nerves especially the Vagus nerves causing heart palpitations. Went to ER 3x and they told me nothing was wrong with me. What cured me of all of that and neuropathy was a ketogenic lifestyle, low carbs 30g or less daily 14oz of protein, zero sugars and zero chemicals and in 1 year I was completely healed.

In my case heart palpitation increase as I increase carbohydrate, when I eat my normal low carb diet with a Magnesium supplement the palpitations disappear.

Can I just say, I love you?
I discovered the stomach/vagus nerve connection in 2022. Starting that Jan, I had gained a lot of weight. And my back was already messed up due to breaking it in 2008 as well as my ribs.
Well that Jan I spent the day sitting up in my bed watching tv. A big no no for my back and sternum. But I was tired of laying all the time.
I am convinced, sitting so hunched back for so long… helped create the small slipping hernia that was later discovered.
But before it was discovered… later that same night.. after a shower.. I was so exhausted I could barely breathe. I laid down in attempt to calm down but all the sudden I was hit with the wildest heart beat you could ever imagine. I have always had a naturally high HR but this was so extreme I could not move. I went to bend my left arm to get my phone and I had electric shocks in my heart and arm. I could not move it! So I barley moved my right arm to call my mom.
A few mins later I turned my heart rate app on, where you hold your finger on the flash light and it counts your heart beat. I’ve tested it before while at the hospital, it’s accurate.
You won’t believe this but it was 280.
    My heart rate was280!!!
I discovered when I stood it calmed down some. But even that meant 150.
But when I laid down, it shot right back up.
So, off to the ER I went. Horrible experience. So bad I told myself, if this happens again I’ll just die in peace and my house. I’ll never bother with the stress of a trip and the terrible treatment again.
I told them I thought it was interesting/odd that I burped probably 200 x on the 1 hour drive to the hospital. (I live in the middle of no where.) they didn’t care to investigate or connect the dots of course.
So like everything, I had to do my own investigation. I noted that my heart struggled when I ate. So I would fast for 3 days and eat on the 4th.
I noticed when I iced my stomach I felt more calm.
I began to google the stomachs connection to the heart and found out about the vagus nerve. Then I began wondering about a hernia.
So I had to beg and plead for my doctor to send me for a test.
Finally I went for one and that doctor told me I had a small slipping hernia. And that it shouldn’t be powerful enough to do what it’s doing.
I thought to myself, “it “shouldn’t” but it is !!l lol.
I do have bad gut health especially due to negligence of my doctors throughout my 20s. I had a reoccurring ear infection and instead of helping me find the cause my doctor would just write me refills if amox and I stayed on them for years !! Literally from 23 to 29.
Ages 26-29 were for different reasons tho.
I got very sick during Nov 2019. I was 26. I suspect it was cov bc they tested me for everything and said you have to have a new bad flu going around bc I’ve never seen something like this .
I was in anti biotics from Nov-March . That’s how long it took me to get better. However I still struggled with dehydration after that. And I drink zero caffeine, I can’t handle it.
Well right when I think I’m free of medicine, I break my filling out of my tooth. And the stupid Cov rules for dentist was… they can’t drill fill or pull. So all they could do was write me more anti biotics. So ! i was on that until June!! And I finally just found someone to pull the tooth bc they still weren’t allowed to fill. And my stomach was done for !! As you can imagine!
Yet no one told me “you need pre biotics.. you need to do x,y,&z”
I learned that the hard way. I am not amoxicillin resistant. And it makes me tremor when I take it. Thanks big pharm. lol.
I also do not have a gallbladder.
So! That makes for an even bigger fun time lol.
I feel constantly in a state of panic and fear. I worry about the dumbest things. I don’t feel this is who I am on a soul level, it feels like a body thing that I can’t shake. I cannot lose weight bc of it. I couldn’t lose weight in 20 carbs a day. So I have been doing the carnivore diet. My heart struggled rly bad with red meat and all the fat they suggest. I did Introduce ox bile and it helped some but it got to the point to where I said, I’m going to gave to move to chicken and do that more frequently. Everyone does so great on the so called lion diet but for me, I had to switch to carnivore and include chicken . To give my heart a break.
I have a wheat allergy and cannot have so much as 1 gram of sugar bc of my ears. They will become infected immediately. Medical mystery .
I suspect yeast ?? but the doctor says the do not see any in my ear. I tell them it’s bc I keep them clean obsessively. They say yea yea .. you’re fine. Just stay away from sugar lol. Which is easy to say but you will find that even things labeled zero sugar, secretly include it. Which is another reason I went to buying raw meat only.
I have finally started to lose a little weight. Not as much as a normal person would’ve after two months of zero carbs lol. But I suspect I have Cushings or something causing me to be unable to loose weight bc I am always in a state of terror.
I hate to sound dramatic but the truth is the truth.
I am also extremely lonely. I have been alone since my back injury. I was 15 and now I just turned 31. I don’t have any friends and I’ve never been in a relationship. I think that plays a big part of my body’s stress bc I am a big hugger with no one to hug.
There is a type of loneliness that I read once in a book that described it perfectly… they referred to it as skin hungry. Which means your skin literally feels starved of any connection. I think this wears upon my heart as well.
But I don’t know how to let new people into my life bc they do not understand excuses as to why I can’t just jump up and do things they want to do randomly. It also embarrasses me… bc people tend to think you’re making things up for attn. which is a joke bc being sick or an inconvenience is the exact opposite way to get attn lol. In my experience, no one cares lol.
Sorry to over whelm you but I just wanted you to have my story too, as a reference and to thank you for helping people in the future. Who will be searching for an answer and will find it only bc of you. ❤❤❤❤

It literally took my "World Class" doctors 50 years to figure out that I had Celiacs after they discovered my spleen was 'missing'. Everything you said from the anxiety to heart palpitations ....everything.... is so true. About a month ago I was exposed to gluten and for the first time since having the celiacs under control with diet the heart palpitations returned. Also, my Graves disease which was under control started up as well. Is that a coincidence or is there a link between the gut and overactive thyroid?

Thank you for taking the time to write about this, I have had 3 episodes of Tachycardia which started in 2014, the first one came out of nowhere, I was giving myself a pedicure and my heart started racing, I ended up in the ER, where they had to put the paddles on to get my heart back in rythm, which, thankfully it did.
The next major episode was in 2021, where again they put on the paddles, yet they didn't have to shock my heart as when they put me under my heart went back into rythm on it's own.
Last year I had heart burn for months, I used holistic remedies to alleviate the heartburn which helped, but did not take it away completely, I slept sitting up which definitely helped, there came a point where I just got fed up with dealing with it, so I started praying, I do not remember how long that I prayed, I am healed by Jesus stripes, but I said this prayer over and over every day, I'm going to guess, that it was approximately a month, I got up one morning and I knew that something had changed in my body, then I realized, the heartburn was gone and thankfully to God it has not returned.
A few months later Dec 29 of last year, I left a friends as I had to go and deal with a difficult situation, when I arrived at the person's shop I didn't feel anxious or stressed, yet, as I was sitting there my heart started to race, it was 12:30 in the afternoon, after my discussion with the gentleman, I left, hoping that if I walked it would stop, I tried all the tricks that I had learned, yet nothing was changing, I called a friend and she drove me to the hospital and after waiting for hours while being monitored they decided to shock my heart. Unfortunately, I haven't felt right since. I have experienced almost all of the symptoms that have been mentioned in this video, the other thing that came to my attention, is that on occasion when I eat, the food gets caught in my esophagus, therefore I can't help but wonder if this could possibly tie into this being a part of the problem.
I also had a feeling last year before this last attack that something wasn't right with my vegas nerve. This video has confirmed so much for me, I can't thank you enough for posting it, now to get the Dr's on board, I may have to pray for another miracle.
Blessings to you Dr and all those that are on this journey, I pray that we will all find the answers and the Dr's that will listen to us and assist us, to become the best that we can be❤

I prayed for nearly 20 years after countless visits to the ER for racing heart rate, skipped beats, anxiety, you name it. Because of my own problems and the docs not finding anything wrong, I started studying medicine and after 10 years of training I found out that it was vagus nerve and gut related. Why? Turns out I had H Pylori and a severe case of candida, a fungal infection. I started on natural remedies and have helped countless people over the years. You would be shocked as to how many people I come across like yourself and even me that have prayed for years with no answer, OR when we believe that God has answered our prayers like in your case, we end up facing the same thing again a short time later. So, not sure exactly how God fits into all this by Jesus' stripes we are healed, etc., but I do know that 100% of the people I have consulted with over the years feel abandoned by God. Actually, that is NOT the case. We come to earth to learn and we have free will to make choices in life. God can send His angels to protect us in case we are faced with death IF it's not our time to go. However, for the most part, it is up to us to figure this thing out that we call life. Now my motto is this. Praying is fine, BUT I tell people to start doing things to be their own health advocate. Learn your own body and do what works for you. Call on God if it makes you feel better, but just know - the BALL is in YOUR court! God gave us all the power of free will and in that we have the power to choose. If God does something for us, then He goes against His own law of free will BY interfering with our own power to choose. That is why you can talk to 99.9% of Christians and 99.9% of them are suffering from illnesses, poverty, and the list goes on and on. It's not that God doesn't care about us, it's that HE WANTS US to basically figure it out by the free will that He gave us all. Remember, if He interferes with our own free will, it goes against His own laws. Sure, does God heal? Well, if it's NOT your time to go and you are faced with a death sentence by your doctor, then yes, God will make sure you are healed. Other than that, for most daily activities, work, medical issues, and just life in general, God will NOT interfere with our own free will. YOU have power and once you realize that YOU have the same power that Jesus has, then you can move mountains! Jesus himself said this, not me! Blessings!

Today, they say that MVP heart diagnosis was overdiagnosed in the 80s and I should get all those same cardiac tests now to determine I do not have MVP. The thing is those tests are very expensive and my OBGYN doctor said it was all in my head, so it fits what you're saying the next step is to send me to a psychiatrist. Because I've had IBS during the health crisis and corrected the problem on my own the symptoms you talked about in the beginning have gone away. So it is related to the gut biome, and no, it was not in my head.

My cardio said my heart is normal, we did ECG and 2D echo to be sure. She even tested my Thyroid, Cholesterol, Sugar, basically everything, but it’s all normal. She mentioned to me once, “I’m still curious what is happening to you, maybe it’s GERD” until I seek my gastro’s help, he told me to change my diet and gave me PPI. I asked him if my panic attacks and heart palpitations are connected to my gut situation, he did not straight up told me it is, he just mentioned that when I’m anxious, it triggers the GERD symptoms more. Hence, the shortness of breath, palpitations. I think doctors now really need to be open and know how gut affects your whole body. It wouldn’t be called the second brain if not for anything

Sometimes it's good to get the heart checked even though there are no symptoms. As for me, i went to my cardiologist complaining that I have chest pains from time to time. I also have a hiatal hernia. Nothing that measured big on the pain scale but I knew there was something there. I was sent for a CT scan, which was accompanied by the FFR. It was found out that I have partial blockage to the LAD (Widow maker artery) and I got a stent fitted there. However, in a follow up visit to my cardiologist, I said I am still experiencing pain there from time to time. He assured me the pains I was getting had nothing to do with the heart! So what I am pointing out here is that I had actually no symptoms for my heart itself, but if I didn't complain about the chest pains the partial blockage to the LAD would have never been identified and I might have very well suffered a heart attack.

Yes! Finally, an answer! I started having issues with my heart rate suddenly shooting up and then palpitations when I was eating or right afterwards. I had afib one time and that sent me to the ER. They did a an echocardiogram and then a stress test where they thought I had possibly had a prior MI. Then I had an angiogram - no evidence of heart attack. Wore a heart monitor for 2 weeks and EP said I had tachycardia and PVCs, but they were benign. Didn’t have a reason as to why they were happening. I was out on three different drugs (beta blocker, blood thinner, and cholesterol med). My cholesterol wasn’t high so I quit that. The EO said I could switch to baby aspirin, but I am still in beta blocker to control my heart rhythm. I have no had afib since (I am pretty sure I was dehydrated) and still have palpitations when I eat or if I get indigestion. Help! How do I fix this?

Agree with everything you explain (so well) here. The heart is an incredibly complex thing in itself of course. Many older people (often not diagnosed with actual heart disease) have an “issue” with the heart’s independent “nervous system”. It’s called Bundle Branch Block (BBB). Left BBB is regarded as a more serious indicator of underlying disease. Right BBB less so…and is a more common ECG / EKG finding. I mention it because I’m sure that having this electrical pathway disturbance probably makes the heart more susceptible to other “external but connected” stimuli, such as the vagaries (!) of the Vagus nerve / stomach bloating etc.

Yes! This totally happened to me! I was diagnosed with IBS, suddenly I was having middle- of- the- night episodes that awakened me, as my heart was just beating out of my chest! I went to a cardiologist and they suggested doing some kind of surgical thing to my heart if it persisted!
But I had a feeling it was due to my persistent tummy troubles. I started taking a powerful probiotic, and digestive enzymes. Over a few months, all the symptoms ended, even my IBS got so much better.
I no longer had the constipation/diarrhea bouts, I felt like a brand new woman!

Doubtful. Just another influencer coming up with scare tactics to garner attention and cash. Certainly some people can be sensitive to about anything, and if you are, avoid it, but making sweeping generalizations about a single cause is just ridiculous. Gundry is another charlatan desperate to make his biased and unfounded opinion into cash, I just finished watching an excellent expose by a very reliable nutritionist. (th-cam.com/video/2LMNM88AJDM/w-d-xo.html) After being hoodwinked myself for too many years, I decided to go whole food plant based 12 years ago for several chronic health issues. I eat more oxalates than ever and if anything have far less palpitations and no more kidney stones.

THANK YOU!!!! I have been experiencing this for years, with no validation from my physicians. In fact, my Cardiologist's solution is to do a Stress Test every other year. SMH. I had a complete GI work up this year, and my only findings were a small hiatel hernia and slight gastritis. My symptoms continue, EXACTLY as you describe them. I am so thankful to you for validating my thoughts!

I get this every once in a while. I have a small hiatal hernia. I get what feels like is trapped gas and it causes my heart to beat a lot faster and irregularly, usually at night and it takes an hour or two to settle down after I take gas-x and chew Gaviscon. I can’t lay down until it passes. It’s very stressful!

Oh WOW! This randomly came up on my suggested videos. And it mentions something i'd noticed but wasnt sure if i was imagining. Now i know i wasn't.
Every now and then i wake in the night, take a sip of water and then, after lying back down my heart seems to slow right down but then suddenly speeds up to the point where it's pounding at 125bpm and im feeling sheer terror (now im used to it, i just lie there, breathe slowly and after a few minutes I'm fine). But i had wondered whether the speeding of the heart was in response to a slowing down. It's pretty great to hear that's a thing! My lowest av heart rate every night is 45 to 49bpm so it's quite slow. Has been for years.

This is 100% me. I got heart palpitations, pain in ny chest and pain in my arm going up my neck, exactly like a heart attack. I just instinctively knew it was not a heart attack. My doctor sent me for an angiogram and it was totally clear as per the cardiologist. I have had stomach problems and reflux for about 30 years now. I ordered a prebiotic prodict with 20 billion organisms. After taking it for about 2 months, I felt so much better. No more palpitations, my eczema cleared up, my memory improved and I just generally felt much better.

I am pulling my hair listening to this video. I have been dealing with this for THREE YEARS!! Heart palpitations that take my breath away, I have told multiple doctors about this! That the horrible palpitations are shortly followed by stomach bubbling, gas, intestinal twitching. Yes I have anxiety but this was a circular issue. I have had multiple EKG and echocardiogram by the age of 31! They all say I’m fine! Okay but why do I feel like I’m going to faint?! I’m so grateful for this video! Thank you!!

I came across this by chance. I couldn't help myself shouting "I told them so".
I ve had Afib for 28 years. It used to be triggeted by "wrong foods", wrong sleep-side (left); hot and humid weather.
Wrong foods include tomato and capsicum peels, legumes, and lactose. It was also triggered by excessive stress.
None of the cardiologists I saw acknowledged any of these triggers. Their reaction when I mentioned it was usually that of moquery.
After 28 years, I'm still on beta blockers and blood thinners and have given up on any hope of a cure.

You should get a blood panel done for all the vitamins and see if you have a deficiency first. Then do an elimination diet. Every time I’ve had a colonoscopy I feel great after since I’ve emptied my entire colon, but then over time I get sick from adding something that my body doesn’t agree with or 2 foods that don’t agree with each other…still working on that

My son is a gastroenterologist endoscopist (lives in Australia).
I've mentioned this to him. He's not in favour of colon cleansing (in my case) as it may result in complicated electrolyte imbalances after the cleansing, which is not good (in my case).
      Is this what you're experiencing?

@@MAGH1O1 She didn't mention "colon cleansing." She got a colonoscopy. The colon has to be cleansed prior to getting one, but a "colon cleanse" is a totally different procedure from a colonoscopy. You could get an electrolyte imbalance from either one, but the colon cleanse is an unnecessary procedure. If you're already on a healthy diet, electrolyte deficiency shouldn't be a problem.
