  • This Subaru Legacy Premium is loaded with impressive tech for under $27k but the driving experience is not something you'd become emotionally attached to. It will transport you from A to B safely with driving assistance like eye sight and "self driving" features (of course this is not autonomous driving, but it will hold your lane and maintain speed/distance behind traffic). The Lineartronic CVT is also unsavory as it seems to hold back what would otherwise be a fine, playful 2.5 liter boxer engine. My gripes with the car are nitpicky, I understand, but they add up to an overall experience that feels sedated.

      Anything all wheel drive really. I really like the look of the new Mazda 6, but unfortunately it is only available in front wheel drive. The Mazda 3 sedan is offered in all wheel drive, but I think it might be a little too small for me. I was going to suggest an Acura ILX, but that is only offered in front wheel drive as well. A new Subaru WRX (non Sti) goes for around 27 grand, but that might not be considered a "Normal" car. All things considered, this seems like the best option.

    One thing I like that Subaru does is mount the side view mirrors to the door and you have that little window behind the A pillar, unlike most auto makers they slap a piece of plastic there to hide where the mirror bolts up. I feel that little bit of extra visibility is nice since it eliminates one more blind spot. especially nice in crowded areas making turns

    Honestly what you said about this kind of car “neutering [one’s] need for speed” is pretty spot-on...
    Going from a V8 Mercedes to a Prius for my daily really helped slow me down after I got a $600 speeding ticket (don’t worry i still got the merc as my weekend car).
    absolutely zero attachment to the Prius, but it’s so easy on my wallet. fuel savings are even better with quarantine, i went from 45 miles per gallon to like 45 days per gallon 🤣

      I still don’t understand the hate people have for the Prius. They are pretty balanced, and will even kick the tail with some lift off mid corner haha. All this with 50+mpg and ton of storage space!

    I am a car enthusiast and I specifically looked for this car when I was looking for my next car. It’s so boring, comfortable, reliable that I basically never have to think about the vehicle I’m driving. I use it for long extended road trips because it will never get stuck in poor weather and it gets reasonable fuel economy. I use it to go to the ski resorts because of the awd. My performance and off road vehicles could never be this practical. If you are someone who needs a fast exciting car you should never be even looking at any car like this, it’s a boring mindless car and it’s the best attribute of it. That’s just my perspective but I feel a couple of people would at least agree with some on my points

    If I were to get an ordinary car under 30k (maybe even under 20k), I’d get a current generation Honda Civic Sport sedan with manual transmission. That transmission, paired with a reputable naturally aspirated engine, is the secret to longevity of ownership.

      How so? I compliment all of the features and abilities of a car at this price point. Honda manages to build cars that are fun to drive and have these features. I don't need it to be a Porsche. But it doesn’t need to be a sedative experience

    My wife has a 2016 Legacy, and your review is spot on. The drivetrain is an appliance, not a hint of sportiness, and the steering has no feedback on turn in, but it still feels very stable because of the low CG from the boxer engine. Otherwise, it has great visibility for a modern sedan, ride quality is fine and it's comfortable. It's still a great car because where else are you going to find an AWD sedan that can easily get over 30mpg, with a lot of standard equipment for well under 30k

      I got a new one. I enjoy driving and this isn't a great fast weekend car but for cruising in traffic with some tunes in, it's great. It just does what it is supposed to do and the deal I got was amazing.

    I have this car and love it. My project is a Saab 9-3 and this is my daily. It’s slow as balls but the paddle shifters make me forget it’s a cvt and it’s smooth. The Mrs loves it and the awd in the blistering NE Ohio winters saved me more than once. Next up project wise is a 08 TT. Let’s see if that makes me fall out of love with my Daily.

    Thoughts on the Impreza? Both being relatively low end Subarus I feel like they might be similar. I’ve been looking at a 5 speed Impreza of the same year and I’m worried that they might be similar in the driving department. Debating between the civic hatch of that year or the Impreza

      @@confidentlocal8600 Where did you get that info? The CVTs in Subarus is one of the most reliable CVTs on the market. There is CVTs by Subaru that are still on the roads with over 300k miles

    For under 30k, I probably will go with a Honda Accord without hesitation. Not sure if I could get the one with 10 speed and 2.0 turbo under 30k though

      Yeah you can don’t buy it new. You can get a Fully loaded 10 speed 2.0 Accord for under $30k CAD, that’s like $22k USD. Check Facebook marketplace waaay better deals then autotrader.

      Hell no. I will never support them going into the micro engine territory. I drove a 1.5l turbo and fucking sucks ass for two hours ride. When I got out of the car, I walked holding my ass and back for five minutes at a gas station. Horrible ride. Horrible seats. I would never sacrifice comfort for Honda name. Besides, Legacy probably has better resale and will last longer. I see bunch of the old ones still on road, and having owned them in the past, bar none the most comfortable Japanese sedan, on par with Mercedes. If I was in the market for a new car, I would buy a new Sienna. No sedans and no suvs for me. Vans are ugly, but when you drive one for 20 hours cross country and feel fresh, you will never even look at something stupid like Accord or Camry. Camry is even worse. I don't even understand the point of a sedan anymore. At least Subaru puts large seats in em, unlike Accord.

    Definitely agreeing with you on the emotional engagement thing. My daily driver is a CVT Civic and it is on paper the best car I've ever owned. It's got good power, sophisticated safety features, great MPG and so on but I am less attached to it than any other car I've had. It seems like each new layer of tech takes you farther away from the pure driving experience.

    Jumping from a modded-to-the-gills German car to a 2022 Outback in December. Eyesight, coming from just standard cruise control, feels like self-driving. Those micro adjustments on a long drive add up. And it's so comfortable. The suspension is unbelievably soft. With the new Subaru global platform, it's also whisper quiet in the cabin; over rough pavement, having driven them back to back, it's more quiet than the ES 300h. The best part: I got it for 31k, and because the hold their value so well, if I ever want anything else, I'm out only a couple of grand.

      Strongly considering trading my now 10 year old E350 4Matic (albeit with very low mileage, under 100K KM on the clock) in on a 2021 Legacy Touring. I'm someone who really does enjoy driving. But also at the same time, I'm annoyed at the prospect of yet more repairs, not to mention that for my day to day commute, I just want something comfortable and reliable, not to mention decent on gas. The Subaru seems to fit the bill. I was always opposed to financing, but I know with a Subaru, it'll last me longer than the financed term, and they're popular up here in the great white north for a reason.

    I never get the point of having a car that drives itself if you have to keep hands on the wheel, if my hands are on the wheel then how much harder is it to tilt it a little to each side? I think it would be more useful if there was a sensor to check if you were paying attention to the road instead of having to have hand on the wheel

    I decided to get the 2021 Subaru Legacy Premium and I’m coming from the following cars: 2004 Ford Explorer (Hand-me down -> totaled - brakes stopped working) and a 2007 Infiniti G35X (Hand-me-down -> broken down in highway). I’m an enthusiast, but I also wasn’t interested in getting a BMW or Mercedes. I contemplated on the new Honda Accord Sport, but living in NJ, snow is not a joke. Seeing many people in their RWD cars get stuck, or even FWD cars, it was crazy; Given that I also used to drive (for a short time - a Dodge Charger), I also got stuck in the snow. I’d then decided that I refuse to be in their position. Also, as someone, who drives their car about 15-20 miles both ways to work and school; I wanted something reliable and safe. I don’t regret getting this car one bit! Even if it’s not fast or sexy as other cars, I’m still happy with my choice. I only fill up about once a week; sometimes I even go as far as two weeks or more and still have about 1/4 tank left. It’s definitely a car I’d recommend to anyone and I love how smooth it is. Sometimes it feels like I’m gliding across the highway.

    I'm looking to buy a Subaru Legacy and am coming from a 2005 Ford Taurus. In terms of reliability which is better? The 4 or 6 cylinder? I know the 2019 model was the last MY with the 3.6R engine. I know I would take a hit with MPG with the larger engine, which I don't mind too much. And how much more powerful would the 6 cylinder engine be? Is it worth it compared to the 4 cylinder?

    I've owned a 2015 since 2015 and put over 100k on it. You're not wrong lol. That being said, I absolutely love it. Living in an area where snow can happen 6 months of the year and wanting/needing a sedan that has a solid AWD system, the options are pretty limited. When considering reliability on top of that the options are even fewer. All things considered, it basically comes down to an A6 or this. (GS350 or Q50S maybe but their AWD systems aren't as robust). An A6 with an APR tune would be WAY MORE FUN, BUT, I've never once worried about my windows not opening or getting getting stuck open cause the motor failed, or a leaky moon roof, or the engine mounts failing, or ironically oil or coolant leaks, or anything else. It's been a basic maintenance AWD car that won't quit. Is it inspiring, absolutely fu***** not lolol, no power below 4k rpm and basically none above it either. However, I've comfortably driven through more than a foot of snow with confidence and even helped get Jeeps unstuck. It's a jack of all trades, master of none.

    Honestly. It's a low key sleeper with a really laboring CVT. I don't feel fast behind the wheel of my '20 Legacy Sport, but I feel confident in heavy rainy conditions, long distances, higher speeds. The AWD, the entertainment system and safety/Eyesight features make it a money saver and a loaded option. You just won't be racing anybody off the line. Lol

    I own the top trim of the 2020 Legacy with the 2.4 turbo 260 HP/278 lb-ft. I think you'd find it a lot more enjoyable to drive. It matches the CVT better and 0-60 is 6.2 sec not 8.4. It is still a very soft and smooth ride, but I like that feel.

    They are selling their vehicles on safety, but they drop in a big glary touchscreen? I don't know if it's just the camera, but I can't see anything on there, except for that annoying glare. At least that will keep you from falling asleep at the wheel.

    Actually, I am a grandma, but, I have a 50 mile commute, and I bought this car because of its technology and mileage. Grandma got too many speeding tickets in her manual 5 speed Corolla which was a demon when you hit the gas .😂😂🤣🤣

    Just one note on the Eyesight big cancel button thing. It's fine dude. The button is top right right under your thumb if you need to cancel it. I use Eyesight every opportunity I can and it's a great system. You do need to finesse it a little (it likes to "remain stuck to the car" in front for a little too long even if they are moving into another lane or off ramp) but that comes with experience.

      I much prefer the three-dial systems where I can activate the windshield defroster by turning all three knobs full clockwise. I won't buy a vehicle where I have to take my eyes or attention off the road to adjust the HVAC. This is another example where cost cutting and "gee whiz" tech take precedence over ergonomics and human factors.

      I have hope for the cross trek. It’s definitely a car that targets “adventurous” people so it has to have some life. The legacy seems to have become the grandma car, which is weird because it used to be awesome. Remember the spec B? Those were a blast

    I drive a lot of these cars for work and I own a 2018. This new generation of Legacy has once again gotten more boring and soft. It is also more refined. Subaru has been chasing the mainstream market for years in order to drive up sales and it has worked. The days of a quirky, fun, AWD car you can slide around are gone and have been since 2009. I was excited about the new generation (2020) but I was disappointed with it. The steering has less feel and is lighter than my 18. Every year Subaru's CVT tuning seems to make the cars feel slower and there is no power. The new touchscreen is horrible, slow, and unresponsive. That being said the turbo model is fun (especially in the snow). My 18 is no sports car, it drives like a Camry, but throw a rear swaybar in it and chuck it down a backroad or dirt road and you can have some fun. The technology in these cars is unbeatable for the price point and as a relaxing AWD daily, they work well.

      Totally agree. I don't even need this to slide around...or even be FUN. I just feel like I've taken a heavy sedative when I drive it. It's mind numbing in a way that I have not experienced in a car for a very very long time.

    idk if its just me,but the CVT acceleration in my 2017 heavely depends on my foot pressure,if i give it a pump,almost like changing gears by foot feeling,i get faster take off and way less rubberband feeling that ppl complain about,like he said,all the ppl talking hoda accords and more power are the 1s tht tend to drive like maniacs in the city,its not realistic to want 400hp in ny city limits

      Your right. This cvt is very sensitive to how much and how quick you get on the throttle. It’s very hard to get it consistent. When you get it right the car accelerates very nice and smooth and the fake shifts feel ok. However too much throttle and the engine just revs and doesn’t accelerate properly. You have to be a Ninja to get it right every time. I have to conclude that Subaru’s transmission is just trash, it shouldn’t need to be this hard. This hasn’t been fixed yet so probably never will.

    Just bought one, i was super excited. My first Subaru until i found this. LMOA. I speed in this car, no problem. Lol. Well i can't be to down because ur being honest and truthful about everything ur experience and is correct on what u say about the car. I still love it, im not a grandma. Lol.     The only thing that bothers me about these self-driving features and safety suites is that they may end up encouraging complacency. Distracted driving is never safe and yet these features might make people think it’s okay to hit the gram when they’re behind the wheel. Until the insurance policy is billed to the car and not the driver, people need to be taking ownership of what their car does

      My biggest issue with adaptive cruise is that I find myself letting it slow me down when I approach slower traffic rather than moving left and passing. Painful.

    I started feeling sick just watching this. The car future for someone like me is going to be terrible, I struggle to drive a 2010's car with an automatic. I have to have a 90s car with a manual to feel goo when driving a car or else its just sick constantly.

    I did all of my driving lessons in a 7yo or so Camry, and I severely disliked that car. Everything felt so squishy and soft, it rolled like hell in the corners, and every time I needed to accelerate, the engine had war flashbacks.
    I can’t hate on them too much though. Are they reliable? Yes. Are they good for commuting? Yes. Would I buy a car like it? Probably not.

    On one hand...
    I would rather drop that money on a 6-speed manual Toyota Corolla from 1998 or so, and get everything fixed all the way, and maybe even get it re-painted as maroon or navy blue with a hydrophobic coating, and totally be able to get it fixed for cheap. Recently I drove a 6-speed automatic Corolla '98, and it had an incredible transmission. It up-shifts within 1,5 seconds or so, and the 1,6 liter engine was unbelievable in terms of power.
    On the other hand...
    Forget it, I will not ever own a fresh new car. I don't mind fancy stuff, but there's probably only one place to get it fixed and maintained, and I don't like the stories I've heard about CVTs. If I wanted an automatic, I'd get a traditional one.

    I drive a 2018 cruze, the cvt is teeeeerible. I hate it. I had a 2015 with a 6spd manual and I loved it, I could shift faster in that then my new cvt does.

      The cruze doesn't have a cvt. It has either a 6/9 speed auto, or a 6 speed manual.

    Nice video! I would get an Accord with the 1.5t with a manual. It won’t exist for much longer, unfortunately. The Accord drives so well. I was stunned when I got to drive one. There is some rev-hang but I can’t even list all of the things I love about it. Driving position is super nice and low, super comfortable, super sharp handling for what it is, great visibility, great steering, and a cavernous interior. The 1.5t is a great engine. One of the few turbo engines in its class that likes to rev. Keeps pulling past 5k. It was the biggest surprise for me last year.
    Edit: Honda managed to integrate self driving tech into the manual Accord. It's stunning how much thought went into the current gen Accord.

    I prefer Honda Sensing. I have it on a Honda Jazz and a Honda StepWagon. Try a 8 hour road trip. It eliminates driver fatigue.

    My theory is that these types of cars are not manufactured for individuals - these are for a specific economic role, namely Uber drivers. I call them 'Ubermobiles' as a generic term for any run of the mill sedan these days that puts a smooth ride, comfy back seat, and almost unnoticeable transmission/engine engagement as the ultimate priority. Not to mention styling so bland that the only way you can identify the car is by exterior color or license tag.

Great content man I personally don't mind this car it is reliable and you are right it will get you to where you need to go that is somewhat the point of cars lol. I love cars and driving but when it comes to safety and what's going to keep me on the road Subaru hands down will keep us safe. Keep up the great work!

      No no no no, the onramp is constructed specifically for acceleration. You merge at the speed of traffic on the highway or you stay of the highway!
